Right Christmas spirit BETTER watch out - and not just because Santa Claus is coming to town. The Guardia Civil traffic police from the General Traffic Directorate (DGT) will be out in force, too. Nor will the DGT’s surveillance of the Christmas spirit be restricted to main roads, as the traffic police will also be

concentrating on secondary roads with radar traps and breath-tests. These are the roads where 80 per cent of mortal accidents occur, the DGT pointed out. They are cracking down on the region’s roads as Christmas generally brings an increase in drink driving and drug taking. The DGT expects the usual increase in the number of drivers

on the roads during the next few weeks and this, coupled with many old cars on the roads and the possibility of bad weather, could send accident rates soaring. Smartphone apps like Twitter Radares Valencia which inform drivers where they are likely to find speed traps each day will not be giving prior warning of breathtest controls.

Torrevieja 12th carols in the square concert HUNDREDS of foreign residents and visitors gathered together in the Plaza de la Constitucion in Torrevieja for the 12th annual Carols in the Square carol concert in English. Launched in 2002 by the city’s Department of Immigration, the event attracts particularly British and Scandinavian residents, who gather in front of the main door of the church to get in the festive spirit. The Phoenix Band, directed by Julie Schofield, headed the singing with the choir composed of more than 100 choristers from different nationalities. This year, the Torrevieja Municipal School Choir, under the direction of Selena Cansino, also took part. The mayor and councillors were also in attendance. Following the carols, an international mass was held in the Inmaculada Church, dedicated to the foreign residents of Torrevieja of whatever

nationality. Once again, there was the offering of nonperishable foodstuffs to be distributed to the needy of the town.
