Motril mourns Queen Fabiola MOTRIL is mourning the death of Belgium’s former Queen Fabiola, who died at the age of 86. A day of official mourning was held over the weekend to honour the Spanish-born monarch who had close ties with the town. Fabiola and her husband King Baudouin were regular visitors to Motril and were often seen around the town, buying groceries at the local market or attending mass. The Villa Astrida at Playa Granada was their summer residence. The love affair between the Belgian royals and the town in Granada began when the king was flying over Granada’s coast and caught a glimpse of Motril from the air. He insisted on visiting the

town and was instantly taken with its charms. King Baudouin died of a heart attack in his beloved Spanish town in 1993.
After his death, Fabiola continued to visit the town until her retirement from public life in 2013.
According to the mayor, Luisa Garcia Chamorro, the queen was a very popular person among the residents of Motril, who will miss her greatly. Fabiola, a former hospital nurse, married King Baudouin in 1960, but she was no stranger to royalty; her parents were of Spanish royal lineage and her godmother was Queen Victoria Eugenia of Spain. In honour of her marriage to the Belgian king, Spanish bakers created a special type of bread - ‘la fabiola’ - which is still popular in Spain to this day. Fabiola had been in poor health since 2009 and died at Stuyvenberg Palace Castle in Brussels, Belgium.
