Expat is awarded the British Empire Medal BRITISH by birth, Spanish at heart, Pamela Dawson Tasker has received the British Empire Medal (BEM) for her charitable work and assistance to the expatriate community. Receiving the medal from the Ambassador’s Residence in Madrid, Pamela told Euro Weekly News that she had been ‘stunned’ to receive the call from the ambassador to say she had been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. “I couldn’t believe it and had to keep it quiet until it was officially announced,” said Pamela. As she accepted the medal, Pamela, who has lived on the Costa Blanca for more than 30 years, said it was not just for her, but in recognition of all the volunteers. She added: “There are hundreds of thousands of

volunteers doing their bit and none of this existed 30 years ago. I couldn’t do what I do without the volunteers who help, and I look on this as a recognition of the work done by all these people.” Pamela started her work in 1982 distributing poppy boxes for the Royal British Legion (RBL).

She went on to found the RBL Benidorm District Branch and remains its secretary as well as being President of the local branch of cancer charity AECC in Alfaz del Pi.
