Javea restores hope for Nairobi school

JAVEA’S community has raised thousands to support a small school in Nairobi, offering a lifeline to children in one of the poorest areas of Kenya.

Students at the Xabia International College (XIC) have been raising funds for the Hope Restoration Centre (HRC) for several years since music teacher Abi Fletcher became involved in the project, and a recent non-uniform day and cake sale saw a further €338 raised.

HRC is a small school located in Kibera, Nairobi, one of the largest slums in the world. It is run by Pastor Laighdon Agega, and in 2009, Abi Fletcher heard about the school after her friend Helen became involved and took

over the fundraising.

Between them, with Helen in the UK and Abi on the Costa Blanca, they work to continue the operations in Nairobi.

Abi said the support by XIC and the community has really made a difference to the lives of the children at HRC. “The school is really involved and the children have taken it in and always want photos. They give me toys to take over

and then want to see photos of them with their new owners at Hope and it is really lovely,” Abi explained.

Abi has been to Nairobi four times and tries to get over every year to monitor progress at the school and see how the pupils are developing.

She said: “Helen and I are regular visitors to HRC and literally take the money over with us along with donations of clothes,

toys and the children’s favourite: lollipops! Any extra money is always spent with us present so that we can see what it is being spent on. It is so nice to see them and see the difference we are making. It is very satisfying but it can be highly emotional. This year’s trip in April felt very positive; they had taken on all the tips we gave them and it really felt like a school.”

CAMPELLO: Forty five markers for 45 gender violence victims.

Hope to replace pain of violence ALL over the Costa Blanca women - and men - staged peaceful protests against gender violence.

They were observing International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25, remembering the 44 women and one child who died in Spain through

domestic violence this year.

Members of the Association of Campello Women (AMUDECA) wanted to replace pain with a message of hope and more than 100 people marched in silence from the town hall to the Casa de Cultura where 45 markers bearing the victims’ names were planted.

An AMUDECA member sang Pasion Vega’s ‘Maria se bebe las calles,’ written for victims of gender killings and two anti-violence manifestos were also read.

A five-minutes’ silence was then held in front of the town hall in honour of the 45 victims and in rejection of murder in all its forms.

Big wage cut for Sax mayor THE mayor of Sax, Vicente Gil, can look forward to a pay-packet containing the princely sum of €1.

They received respective pre-tax monthly salaries of €2,750 and €2,500 until four councillors from their own party backed the reduction proposed by their PSOE and IU counterparts.

According to IU spokesman Antonion Rico, a Sax resident was allegedly asked for €3,000 in cash up front, without IVA added-value tax, for road repairs in a rural area.

The wage cut responded to the need for ‘extreme measures’ to safeguard residents’ interests, Rico claimed.

There are no legal obstacles to slashing salaries this way, the town

clerk and the audit department confirmed.

Neither the mayor nor the councillor has yet revealed whether they intend to fight the decision.

“We have certainly not committed any crime.

“We might have made a simple administrative error, owing to the haste in getting the road repaired,” Gil said.

Pejac, who blends visual metaphors with just a hint of irony, has been gathering much attention thanks to his incredible drawings that are Banksylike in style, yet retain their own identity.

The Santander-born street artist uses abandoned buildings, footpaths and building facades to highlight his view of the world. While British street artist Banksy became famous for his graffiti that often borders on the political, Pejac’s streetscapes have

Denia crosses its fingers to be a creative city DENIA is waiting with bated breath to learn if Unesco will name it a Creative City of Gastronomy.

The announcement is due this Sunday (November 30) and Cristina Selles, president of the Marina Alta Hoteliers’ and Tourism Association (Aehtma)

Javea girl still missing KHRYSTYNA SAVENCHUK: Missing since May 20.

PUPILS at her Javea school have vowed to continue searching for Khrystyna Savenchuk.

The Ukrainian, 15, who had lived in the town since 2011 has not been seen since the morning of May 20 when she set out for the town’s Instituto Numero 1.

Six months after Khrystyna’s disappearance her school friends have inundated internet social networking sites with a new poster and photograph, appealing in German, English, Spanish

and Valenciano for information.

Investigators found that Khrystyna was in constant contact with a very controlling Russian boyfriend who lives in Germany. Police discovered that the last nine days of her computer history were wiped clean and have asked for cooperation from Skype and her Russian internet providers.

Countdown to the season begins T

HIS weekend will see the majority of towns and cities across Spain adopt a more festive look with the annual switch-on of the Christmas lights for the build-up to the holidays.

It’s hard to believe that Christmas is only four short weeks away as once again it seems to be sneaking up on us out of nowhere.

It only seems like yesterday when we were all still enjoying the sunshine and beaches, and now we can look forward to Christmas fairs, office Christmas parties and braving the shopping crowds in the search for gifts - not to mention the mulled wine, turkey and minced pies.

Many expats head home to their own countries for the Christmas season, but there is still a huge amount of us who stay here and enjoy all that Spain has to offer for

the holidays. It might not be as cold and it might be a bit strange to see bars and restaurants open on Christmas Day, but the season here in Spain is every bit as enjoyable as it is back home.

We’re getting into the Christmas spirit here at EWN, and are looking forward to the build-up to our favourite time of year.

Health fears over local crematorium HEALTH professionals expressed doubts about the environmental impact of the San Juan crematorium, located near the hospital and medical school.

The regional government backtracked not long ago on a decision to halt its activities as a precautionary measure, after the crematorium’s owners produced new statistics that appeared to put it in the clear.

Meanwhile the Guardia Civil’s environment protection unit Seprona is

continuing to investigate after San Juan residents lodged an official complaint.

The hospital’s staff committee called for a halt to the crematorium’s activities and claimed that it should be relocated to a site away from built-up areas where its emissions would not pose health risks.

The situation was “confusing,” maintained the committee, which brushed aside the owners’ reasoning that the town centre was 500 metres away. “They did not mention the nearby medical school, the hospital, the health centre or the Lo Romero school and the shopping centre,” the committee pointed out.

Keeping an eye on the urbanisations

ALFAZ DEL PI’S urbanisations recently received their periodic municipal check-up.

A significant number of Alfaz residents live on urbanisations, some of them near the town centre and others that are more distant.

Homeowners were encouraged to take an active interest in maintenance and Plan de Limpieza, the town hall’s ongoing cleaning project, explained Alfaz’s Maintenance councillor Juan Carlos Casiano.

“They pass on their needs directly to us and in some cases their complaints as well,” he said.

November visitor numbers increase SPANISH visitors outnumbered foreign tourists during the first two weeks of November.

According to hoteliers’ association Hosbec, 54 per cent of Costa Blanca

visitors during the first half of the month were Spanish tourists. The remaining 46 per cent were foreign.

Overall, average Costa Blanca occupancy during the first half of November reached 49.8 per cent, three percentage points more than last year and 18 percentage points more than in 2012. It was the Costa Blanca’s best result for this period since 2008, said a satisfied Hosbec.

Learn to cope with red tape ALTEA LA VIEJA is organising Spanish lessons for foreign residents.

The course will enable them to learn enough Spanish to complete paperwork and deal with administrative matters, explained Altea councillor Marga Riera The classes include practice as well as theory, as the students will visit the town hall, SUMA and banks once a month, she added.

Groups will not be large and the teacher speaks both English and German, facilitating communication and interaction, Riera pointed out.

The course, which costs €20, is being held at Altea la Vieja’s Centro Cultural from 10am to 1pm each Thursday and it is still possible to enrol at the Foreign Residents’ Office.

Tapas and more at Javea’s fish market JAVEA restaurateurs are once again displaying their expertise at the Lonja, the port’s fish market.

This coming Saturday (November 29) they will be taking part in the third edition of Xabia al Plat Mariner, using local fish, shellfish and cured fish to produce tapas, paellas and other dishes.

3 trawlermen are rescued from sea THREE Villajoyosa fishermen were picked up off Campello after their trawler

sank. The crew of three, returning to port after a day’s fishing, radioed to

advise that the ‘El delfin de Andalucia’ had sprung a leak.

There was a strong north-east wind blowing and they were in a zone where the water was seven metres deep, they said.

The Salvamento Maritimo sea rescue service and Emergency Information and Coordination Centre (CICU) immediately mobilised the rapid response rescue craft, Salvamar Polaris.

Communications were lost when the trawler, built in 1926, sank 400 metres from Campello shore but the three men were soon located and picked up.

Although they were in the water for only 15 minutes, they were already showing signs of hypothermia and once ashore were taken to San Juan hospital.

Emaus is in grave financial situation ALTEA-BASED charity Emaus’s survival is at stake.

For the last 35 years the association has assisted young people with social problems, the elderly, the disabled and women who suffer abuse.

Over the last three years, however, its financial problems have increased and the British, Norwegian and Dutch foreign

communities amongst others regularly donate food and money for Emaus centres in Altea, Benissa, Vergel, Alfaz, Calpe and Polop.

The regional government has not paid the association’s monthly grant since May and workers have not been paid for five months.

Land grab tussle SAN JUAN Council was accused of fencing off private property to extend the local sports ground.

Accusations of string-pulling THE owners of a Benidorm pub believe that personal interests lie behind their fines for excessive noise.

Relatives of Asuncion Quinza, a principal in the autonomous region’s Interior department, are

amongst those who want the popular seafront Tiki Beach pub closed down according to the owners.

They have now filed a complaint against the two police officers who fined Tiki Beach last summer. As

Toy town looking for happy ending FAMOSA manufactured toys for decades in Onil but could soon leave its last centre in the area.

The Famosa factories in Onil and neighbouring Tibi produced Spain’s bestloved dolls and other toys but relocated to Alicante City in 2012. The move was prompted by differences with the owner of the industrial sites housing the production lines and the

impossibility of finding alternative premises in the area. Now the company’s logistics centre could transfer to Valencia for the same reason, announced Famosa, which has offered to transfer staff to either city.

Onil’s mayor Jose Ramon Frances has offered to mediate between Famosa and the landlord Manuel Rodriguez, the former

owner of another toy firm, Feber.

The situation is complicated by confrontation between both parties and the number of official complaints and countercomplaints between both parties, Frances admitted.

Rodriguez has meanwhile informed the mayor that he is willing to give way “on some points” and negotiate.

All is going swimmingly well THE 2014-2015 season has begun at Benitachell’s municipal swimming school.

Twenty-six swimmers aged between eight and 16 make up the team that will represent Benitachell in the Marina Altea sports

Teams from Calpe, Benissa, Denia, Pego, Ondara and Vergel as well as Benitachell will swim in the league competitions which started in Ondara.

Alicante schools get top marks TEN schools in Alicante Province have been highlighted as amongst the best in the Valencia Region.

The schools, a mixture of public and private centres, have been recognised based on the results of the latest examinations carried out by all students in the fourth year of primary school education.

Custody ruling causes outrage

A JUDGE in Alcoy has awarded custody of two girls to their father even though their mother had filed a complaint that he abused her.

The prosecution was calling for five years in prison for the man but the case has not been concluded on the alleged abuse, so the judge classed it as “circumstantial evidence that could not be an

element in parental custody” and as a result decided it was “better” that the girls stayed with their father as the mother intended to move from the family home in Muro to go to Castellon.

The woman filed for divorce in September 2013, and shortly afterwards alleged that her partner and a friend went to the house, outside of the agreed

visiting hours for the children, which resulted in an assault.

The ruling provoked outrage within the ACOVIFA Association, which campaigns for battered women in the l'Alcoia-Comtat area.

In addition, the mother claimed the views of her eldest daughter, aged nine, had not been taken into account as she wanted to stay with her.

La Nucia children’s day MORE than 4,000 people participated in the seventh International Children’s Day in La Nucia.

Children of all areas flocked to the Ciutat Esportiva Camilo Cano, where over 30 free activities were arranged for youngsters to enjoy, including 20 craft workshops, bouncy castles, playgrounds and a BMX and trial bike exhibition.

The events marked the International Children’s Day, a global event, celebrated every November.

Calls double to UK benefit fraud hotline CALLS to the benefit fraud hotline from Spain have doubled since the British Government launched a major advertising campaign during the last week of October.

The initiative urges the public to call the hotline if they suspect benefit fraud, and to encourage claimants to report changes in their circumstances. The Department for Work and Pensions’ (DWP) benefit fraud hotline in Spain - 900 55 44 40 - has seen a surge in tip-offs which fraud investigators are now pursuing to verify if people are claiming benefits illegally.

Awareness of the campaign and associated media coverage among expatriates in Spain, and their willingness to call the hotline, is helping investigators to reduce the waste of honest taxpayers’ money on fraudsters.

Work and Pensions Minister Mark Harper said: “Hard-working taxpayers have had enough of fraudsters taking money which is meant for genuine claimants, which is

why we’re seeing so many people taking action by calling the hotline. We know it’s a small minority who commit benefit fraud, but I would urge anyone who has suspicions to call the free and confidential number or report them anonymously online.”

Worldwide, someone is reported to benefit fraud hotlines every minute of every working day on average, and in the last year alone nearly 60,000 fraud investigations have been launched.

The UK Government has recovered nearly £1 billion (€1.26 billion) of wrongly paid benefits in the last year, and has introduced a raft of measures to crack down on people who cheat the system, both abroad and in the UK. No Hiding Place As 50 Countries Sign Deal To Share Your Information Automatic exchange of information on a global scale will become a reality in 2017, as 51 countries signed an agreement to share financial information. Another 35 jurisdictions will join the following year.

All Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and G20 countries, as well as most major international financial centres, have signed a “multilateral competent authority agreement” that will activate the automatic sharing of financial data for tax purposes.

It shows the determination from governments across the globe to prevent tax evasion and capture lost tax revenue.

Tax authorities of participating countries will be able to gather much more information on the assets their taxpayers hold abroad.

The OECD explains that automatic exchange of information “can provide timely information on non-compliance where tax has been evaded either on an investment return or the underlying capital sum, even where the tax administrations have had no previous indications of non-

Fifty-eight jurisdictions, known as the “early adopters”, have pledged to make the first exchange in 2017.

This includes Spain, the UK, most EU countries, Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey, and Gibraltar.

A further 35 jurisdictions have said they will start in 2018, including Switzerland, Singapore, Monaco and Hong Kong.

Only a few years ago, in 2008, the then Swiss finance minister Hans Rudolf Merz vowed that banking

secrecy would prevail, saying that its foreign opponents would have to “bite the bullet” and accept it.

The US does not appear on any of the lists, since under its own Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) it will start automatically exchanging information with countries around the world from 2015.

After the signing ceremony, OECD Secretary-General, Angel Gurria, commented: “We are making concrete progress towards the G20 objective of winning the fight against tax evasion… The world is quickly becoming a smaller place for tax cheats.”

The global “Standard for Automatic Exchange of Financial Account Information in Tax Matters” is different from most current bilateral agreements, where authorities have to make formal requests for information. Now they will automatically receive information on all their taxpayers

who hold assets in the participating territories.

The standard sets out the financial account information to be exchanged, including balances, interest, dividends and sales proceeds from financial assets. It covers accounts held by individuals and entities, including trusts and foundations.

The OECD will establish a peer review process to ensure that the automatic exchange of data is effectively implemented. It is encouraging developing countries to join the movement.

The move towards the end of financial privacy has already had a significant impact on state coffers, as more and more people realise there is nowhere left to hide. According to the OECD, 20 countries have raised $47 billion (€37bn) through voluntary disclosure schemes since 2009.

Cross border tax planning has completely changed over the last 15

years; particularly since the move towards global tax transparency escalated in the wake of the financial crisis.

Where once we used to take financial privacy for granted, we now have to accept that it is history. Tax authorities will have information on our income and assets, wherever we hold them.

One thing has not changed however, which is that every individual has the right to structure their assets in a tax efficient manner.

You need to establish how you can use approved tax advantageous structures here in Spain to reduce your tax liabilities. It is important to be compliant with local tax law, but it is also important to protect your wealth from taxation wherever possible. You can do both if you take specialist advice.

A farewell to Cayetana CORDON PRESS.

W

ITH the death of the Duchess of Alba, Spain has lost one of its most recognisable figures.

To many who only knew her in her later years she was a figure of fun, mainly because of her looks - hippyish frizzy hair, sometimes dyed red, a pasty white complexion and her forthright public pronouncements.

But they forget the great influence she had in her younger years as the most titled, and one of the wealthiest, people in Spain.

“She dressed like Grace Kelly in those days,” said Sheelagh Tennent, a Scots Irish expat who has lived in Spain for most of her life. “I met her in Granada in 1960 at a Red Cross function. She was very graceful. She was not as beautiful as Grace Kelly, but that was her look and style. And she certainly was good looking in her own right.

She was very chic, but then she went rather hippy.

“She was a very nice woman, very natural and spoke beautiful English. She loved bull fighting, Flamenco and Sevilla.”

The Duchess, who died aged 88 last week after a bout of pneumonia, was never out of the society pages of magazines. She was the darling of the gossip columns, ‘celebrity’ TV shows and newspapers right up to the end of her eventful life.

Known as Cayetana de Alba, she was hugely rich, as well as being Spain’s biggest private landowner. The millions she earned

from EU farming subsidies were one criticism detractors had of her. In Andalucia particularly, she was targeted by left wingers for having vast acreages of rural land left uncultivated, while farm workers were left landless.

She had palaces throughout the country, including the Palacio de las Dueñas in Sevilla, her main residence, as well as the

the Palacio de Liria in Madrid where she was born.

Summers were spent at her house in Marbella or another in Ibiza, and she was well known in local society hotspots like the Marbella Club. There too she was known for her grace and charm. “She had time for everyone and was very gracious, she treated everyone with respect, no matter who they were,” said one Marbella society source.

The Duchess was married three times.

Firstly in 1947, to Luis Martínez de Irujo in what the French newspaper Libération called “the most expensive wedding in the world,” with whom she had six children.

He died in 1972 and in 1978 she married former priest Jesus Aguirre who died in 2001. Her relationship with Alfonso Diez, a civil servant 24 years her junior sparked a long running public argument with three of her children. “They don’t want me to marry but they change partners more often than I do,” she said. She married Diez, who survives her as do all her children, in 2011.

Pledge from Campofrio after fire disaster CAMPOFRIO pledged to rebuild its Burgos plant, recently destroyed by fire.

Owned by Mexican Sigma and the Chinese company WH, Campofrio is Europe’s largest meatprocessing company.

Between factory employees and indirect jobs the Burgos fire will affect approximately 2,000 families, but no Campofrio work contracts will be rescinded, the company said.

The processing plant whose 890 employees produced an annual 60,000 tons of products has been totally destroyed, together with

an adjoining ham-curing facility which employs 50 workers.

A third factory is untouched, but 70 per cent of the 5,000 pigs slaughtered there each day were destined for the ruined module.

Campofrio is committed to resuming production in Burgos, company sources emphasised, but they conceded that it was early to guarantee “100 per cent of the present jobs.”

At the same time, processing 60,000 tons of products cannot be done with “just a couple of people,” the company added.

Xenophobia undermines unity A RISING tide of xenophobia is undermining Western European unity.

Austerity, the threat of a return to recession, service cutbacks, unemployment and inflation combine to fuel a virulent nationalism tearing at the fabric of society. The first manifestations of disquiet are anti-austerity protests sweeping EU capitals and major cities.

I said it first: This week international policymakers debated if the US dollar and Euro can compete with rival economies.

The effect is aggravated by former trading partners like Russia opting for alternatives and self-sufficiency.

facing up to the possibility of such a challenge.

Europeans should never be economic migrants. However, as the Euro-zone slips back into recession young people face a bleak future. The young ponder greener grass opportunities in faraway countries.

Typically, Estonia has lost 20 per cent of its population. Not all will stay in Europe.

In doing so newcomers face growing hostility as they enter job markets that can no longer offer employment to their own nationals. This is where the blue touch paper of xenophobic up-the-drawbridge sentiment creeps in. Growing resentment against immigration in Britain and Germany is well recognised.

Fuelled by NATO’s anti-Russian rhetoric there is simmering, anti-Russian sentiment in the Baltic States. These three nations host large Russian ethnic communities as England hosts many of Irish background. Desperate to separate the EU from Russia in order that it becomes more reliant on American trade,

the US provokes anti-Russian feeling.

EU anti-Russian sanctions are causing a backlash in Germany, Poland, Spain and France. The French economy, already slipping into recession, will face a bill of nearly €3 billion and the loss of thousands of shipbuilding jobs if, caving in to American pressure, France fails to honour its shipbuilding obligations to Russia.

In what is now Ukraine, the birthland of Russia, the Russian language is the most used. As I write, frontier posts and barbed wire walls are being erected. Imagine that happening on Northern Ireland or Scottish borders.

If xenophobia rears its ugly head, all Europeans will suffer. Those who live in greenhouses shouldn’t throw stones.

AS if crying babies, noisy student neighbours or an uncomfortable mattress weren’t enough to keep us up at night, a new study has revealed that women suffer terribly from sleepless nights, because of money worries too.

Women are apparently much more bothered about cash flow than men are, and thinking about such financial problems, causes them to toss and turn all night.

Fretting about how to pay household bills and how to begin some proper saving

On top of these, women were particularly worried about paying for the future and repaying back debt.

All this worry is not doing women any favours either.

The sleepless nights impact on their ability to concentrate, get work done and it negatively affects their relationships.

So why are women more stressed about money than men?

Some might say that women are exposed to more stressful situations than men, as they

not only have their own working lives, but also tend to take on more responsibilities in the home.

Also it’s true that women in general earn less than men, so if they’re employed part-

time for example, they’re less likely to have health benefits and financial resources.

Another theory is that women are more comfortable with reporting higher levels of stress.

If you notice that you might be one of these women lacking sleep and stressing over money it’s time to take some action.

Remember it’s not selfish to look after yourself, it’s normal; it’s healthy.

And it will make you more effective at dealing with responsibilities at work and home.

Go for a walk. Stop and sit in the sun for a while. Take a relaxing bath.

Force yourself to take care of yourself.

Also don’t sweep financial concerns under the carpet to be dealt with in the future.

Maybe you feel bad or embarrassed about your debt, and that can lead to inaction.

But it’s essential to face and deal with the situation head on.

If it’s too hard to do this alone, reach out for help.

Still going strong EVERY morning I go to the gym to work out and have my radio with me.

One station plays oldies 24 hours a day, year-round, with no commercials and I happened to hear Leapy Lee’s tune this morning, the Little Arrows tune!

Now I know a bit about 50’s and 60’s rock, but had never heard the tune before and in fact I had to look at the display to see who was doing that particular song. I wrote down the name and then checked on the internet and it was Leapy Lee. I don’t remember hearing it before but that happens sometimes with obscure one-hit wonders!

It’s kind of neat that he did this tune nearly 50 years ago and it still gets air time, so I just wanted him to know it’s still being played somewhere on the planet at some time during the day.

Thanks for a good tune, Leapy, and good health in the future!

Upbeat outlook I RETIRED to Spain from Scotland approximately two years ago and am now 67 years of age.

Shortly after I arrived in Spain I was diagnosed as having prostate cancer. As you can imagine I was devastated, but after radiotherapy treatment at Hospital Clinico, Malaga I have the all-clear and it feels great.

Therefore Leapy Lee should not feel down as he will probably be OK, but if the news is bad, remember it can be treated successfully.

Our UK government’s policy towards the EU is being led, not by a real assessment of the pros and cons, but by their terror of losing seats to UKIP. And of course it follows that we should tell our UK contacts not to vote for UKIP, a party with no policies except to get out of the EU. They try to make us believe that would solve our problems, while it would solve none.

Although the main parties seem paralysed with fear of UKIP, they could get their credibility back if they would only come out and fight Farage instead of appeasing him.

Vanishing act I WOULD like to know if anyone has had the same experience that I had.

On November 12 at a supermarket in La Cañada a 35cm x 35cm calendar went on the conveyer belt and through the till. It appeared on my bill but never came out at my end.

I went straight to my car and seeing it wasn’t there returned to the store within 10 minutes to report its absence. It was too

large to slip out of my trolley and too large and colourful to be left on the conveyer belt.

Any ideas, anyone?

Changing times I’VE been in Spain for the last 15 years on and off and have seen many changes and not for the better!

1. There is a high speed train track to nowhere with millions of euros wasted, plus a bronze statue of King Felipe and the queen outside the town hall in Fuengirola which is now a hotel.

2. People are living with their retired mum and dad with six or eight people in a twobedroom flat without employment or money, living on dad’s pension. That’s wrong!

3. There are people living in doorways like the woman at the BBVA bank in Los Boliches who has been there for two years.

She goes to Santa Fe hostel when she gets a few euros and is always clean and sleeps sitting upright on a suitcase. I told Age Concern but nothing

happened.

4. They are driving retired expats back to the UK with stupid tax laws and will miss all the UK pensions we spend here when we’ve gone.

5. There are too many beggars, genuine or not, and no wonder all of Europe go to the UK for benefits. Some things in the rest of Europe are good as you can’t get benefits until you pay in for two years.

That would stop them all going to the UK and taking my family’s money!

6. People come on holiday for sun, sand, food and entertainment, starting at 9pm and stopping at 12 midnight.

Madrid people buy cheap apartments over existing bars then get them closed down for noise! They should not be able to do this and they should only complain if a bar opens up after buying a flat.

7. The town hall wants to sit in ivory towers and look down at locals fishing for sardines and riding donkeys. That is Spain’s two tier system: the ‘haves’ and ‘have nots.’

It’s too early I AM old enough to remember the old ‘Post early for Christmas’ slogan, although I believe the good old GPO (remember the GPO?) was thinking of a just a week or so ahead of the big day, not months.

I very much doubt that they imagined people would one day be buying Christmas cards and presents the moment Halloween was over. Much of it is the fault of shops and chain stores where they put up their decorations and sometimes their prices in mid-November.

They then brainwash and strong-arm the public into believing it is their duty as consumers to respond.

Spain used to be different in this respect, staving off the trappings and feeding frenzy until well into December but no, even that’s been taken away from us now.

I enjoy Christmas as much as the next person but please, please, please: not in November.

Finally arrived back home LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT

HAT was most definitely the trip that was. Everything that could go wrong - did.

Right up to missing my final connecting flight from Barcelona to Mallorca. Not my fault. With an already tight schedule, my flight from Denmark was delayed for 40 minutes, this led to the ol’ boy panting and dripping between terminals one and two at Barcelona, where I finally arrived at the gate at exactly take-off time. There’s nothing more frustrating than standing at the gate watching the doors close to the plane you should be on. Anyway I did manage to catch one an hour later (at an extra charge of €120, I may

add). Frankly I can never fathom the often unbelievable variance in airline prices.

Sometimes you can travel great distances for €30-odd and at other times it can cost a fortune for a 45-minute hop.

Ah well, what do us minions know?

On the brighter side I’ve managed to pick up a number of UK bookings for next year.

One of the reasons is that most of the 60s’ lot are actually dead! Never thought I could be a commercial draw simply for being alive - funny ol’ life, innit?

Denmark I found a little depressing, what with the cold and most of the populace shrouded in black winter attire.

The people are most friendly, however, and I’d like to thank them for making the ol’ boy feel thoroughly welcome and comfortable. By the way, all you Denmarkians, that orange thing which appeared briefly in

One of the most interesting occurrences for me happened on the very doorstep where I was staying. My girlfriend had told me that her upstairs neighbours were Muslims and I

had glimpsed a couple of shrouded-up ladies passing by the kitchen window. Lo and behold the day before I left there was a knock at the door.

It turned out to be the same two ladies standing on the doorstep holding a... poinsettia.

Why take a hopeless finesse?

North’s 2♥ cue bid shows a sound raise to at least 2♠. As South holds a very good hand for his 1♠ overcall, he bids 4♠ on the next round. How do you play the hand when West leads 3♥?

Which card would you play from dummy? Can the K♥ possibly win? There are two excellent reasons why you should play low. Firstly, the bidding, East opened, and there are only 13 points missing, so he must hold the A♥. Secondly, West led the 3♥. No sensible player, in this situation, would under lead an Ace in a suit contract; therefore the Ace must lie with East.

You should play low from dummy; East will win with J♥ and cash A♥. You will now win the J♦ return and clear trumps in three rounds. You cash two more diamonds,

To my astonishment, and pleasure, I may add, they then welcomed me to Denmark and, handing me the plant, wished me a happy Christmas!

My lady friend told me that both the mother and father were employed and their two daughters attended the local school. Now that’s what I call integration. Contrary to what a number of people think, I am not a racist and if all immigrants acted and integrated in the same way as this lovely family, I would have no problems at all.

Unfortunately, as most of us know, this family is the exception rather than the rule.

Why should you choose this line of play? Again the clue is in the bidding; it is almost certain that West holds K♣ in order to open.

What could have gone wrong if you had played the K♥ at trick one?

An astute West, on seeing the lead of 3♥, would realise that a low heart meant that East held a heart honour.

West could therefore return a low heart to his partner’s 10♥, and a club return by East would set up a subsequent club trick for the opposition to take the contract one down.

I made a mental note to myself to be one of the cheerful people Erica Russell Watson: My journey – and I’m driving

27th October BACK at home after my mastectomy and I was feeling surprisingly well. I think that my overall physical and mental state had a lot to do with being organised and well prepared for the hospital visit.

You need to free your mind of all worries if possible and allow yourself to relax and you will find you go through surgery and recover very well. Just knowing that my dear friend Emma was at home looking after my children was a huge comfort to me. She had flown over from England and cooked and cleaned and nurtured!

She came to visit me every day in the hospital and even tried to rescue a stray puppy outside the hospital one day!

Special thanks to her for all her love and the great chemo cookery book! It was time to get serious on the food front and start cooking meals to

boost my immune system in preparation for chemotherapy.

The next few weeks were spent pottering about looking after myself and my stitches.

People were most impressed by my mastectomy bra and ‘chicken fillet.’ “You look normal Erica.” Normal is exactly how I felt! In reality I wasn’t upset about losing my breast and at times entirely forget that I only had one!

It’s amazing how quickly you adapt to changes.

Reconstruction would be a thing for the future, I had to get better first and then I could think about bikinis!

The district nurse visited me at my home to check how my stitches were doing and was pleased. It was nice of him to come to my house as I still couldn’t drive and this way I avoided the germs of the doctor’s waiting room!

They looked dry and the wound had closed very well so he removed the stitches.

Each little procedure that liberates your body from the vestiges of an operation feels like a mini triumph.

Life ticked on as normal despite still not being able to drive. I would soon be behind the wheel again though. You need to give yourself 15-20 days after

Just before I could get back behind the wheel Marta, yes yet another friend from England, arrived. It was great to see her and catch up and we did the shopping and various tasks that are more difficult single-handed.

She had gone to a lot of effort to think of the things that would help me. For example, probiotics to boost my immune system and naturally an enormous amount of chocolate!

The phone rang and my appointment with the oncologist was confirmed first with the radiologist on November 13 and then the oncologist for November 19 in Malaga.

I went to the Carlos Haya Hospital to talk to the radiologist and they explained that I would be receiving chemo first, with the idea of eradicating any traces of cancer in my system and then radiotherapy a month after the end of the chemo.

The radiotherapy is concentrated in the area you have had your tumours removed from to try to ensure they don’t regrow. I was informed radiotherapy would not hurt but my skin would be very sensitive and that I would have to use special creams.

The sessions would be intensive and daily and could be up to 20 sessions with weekends off for a rest.

This would be confirmed later down the line after a full body x-ray and to see what shape I was in after the chemo in terms of weight loss and the like.

Now just to wait for my appointment with the oncologist to find out how many sessions of chemo I would have and to ask about all the side effects and to cover any doubts I had.

I was very keen to get started. Roll on November 19 was all I could think.

November 19 and I went to the ‘Materno’ Hospital in

Malaga for my appointment with the oncologist. It was a long wait. As I looked around the waiting room it started to hit home what the side effects of chemo would be. Apart from the obvious signs like hair loss, I caught snippets of conversations about many other side effects such as nausea.

Some people seemed cheerful and others were very low indeed. Mental note to self; try and be one of the cheerful people Erica!

Then finally I was called in.

The oncologist went over my operation results, examined me and asked me how I felt. To be honest I felt fine apart from having headaches. He decided to send me for scans for my head, torso and bones as a precautionary measure.

This was a positive move because if the cancer had spread to another part of my body I would rather know about it!

My chemotherapy would start very soon and I was told to come back to the hospital on November 26 for blood tests and depending on the results I would then be given a start date for treatment.

Not long to go now. The sooner I started, the sooner I would finish.

“One day during his working life, his steadiness suddenly deserted him and he acted out of character, startling and perplexing both himself and his colleagues.

“He felt his colleagues were being over-zealous in restraining an individual who had been behaving unacceptably.

“When Andy intervened to normalise the situation, the individual didn’t recognise that Andy was trying to help him, and instead spat in his face.

“Andy lost it and had to be restrained himself, to protect

This puzzled him for many years, until in (post-retirement) therapy he recovered a childhood memory which suddenly and amazingly made sense of things.

“More than 30 years before the incident, on his way home from school, he had been attacked and overpowered by a bully who knelt over him and dribbled saliva into his mouth.

“In that childhood situation he was powerless. As a grown man he was suddenly able to express the rage the child could not, the triggers being the unfairness he perceived in both situations, and of course the indignity of the saliva.

“Andy was startled and pleased by making this connection in therapy.

“Realising behaviour now can have links back to childhood, can help ease tensions and help you realise your full potential. If there are things happening in your life that you cannot explain or control, maybe psychotherapy can help.”

Brazil nuts can help boost female fertility rates WOMEN who want to boost their fertility and chances of conceiving should eat more nuts, red meat and seafood.

Scientists found that selenium, a natural antioxidant which is found in nuts, red meat and seafood, but is particularly high in Brazil nuts, plays a crucial role in the early stages of conception as it helps the development of healthy ovarian follicles, which are responsible for the production of eggs in women.

Researchers at the University of Adelaide in Australia said they have known for some time that selenium is important to men’s fertility, but no one had researched its role within healthy reproduction in women.

Alcoholics don’t seek treatment IN Spain it is estimated that between 200,000300,000 people could have problems with alcohol.

However, only eight to 10 per cent seek treatment from health professionals.

Dr Gabriel Rubio, from the Hospital Doce de Octubre in Madrid, said that young Spaniards started drinking at younger ages.

He said that those who continued with high consumption, which could lead to addiction in later years, did not tend to recognise the problem.

He said: “Around 90 per cent of alcoholics do not get the ‘right’ treatment to overcome their addiction.”

GOUT is surrounded by myths and confusion.

Here, Fernando Perez Ruiz, vice-president of the Spanish Society of Rheumatology, explains the disease...

Gout occurs when there are deposits of sodium urate crystals in the joints: “If our defence system cannot control the urate crystals, the chronic inflammation, often in the big toe, causes pain and can lead to serious injuries, in some cases unrecoverable if it isn’t treated.”

Dr Perez Ruiz said there are many risk factors such as medication, the natural degeneration of the kidney or a “disordered” life: “It is more common in northern European countries and the USA and it seems that the Mediterranean diet protects southern Europeans a little more.”

Those who follow a

diet high in meat, are overweight, or have a high daily consumption of alcohol also increase the risk, but these are not the sole causes of the disease.

Gout is more common in men - there are four men to every one woman who has the disease - as female hormone oestrogen appears to exert a protective effect. After menopause this gender gap decreases to reach a two to one ratio between men and women.

Dr Perez Ruiz says it is best to seek medical advice as soon as any symptoms occur, and a rheumatologist will carry out blood tests to determine the level of sodium urate.

Changing diet, and in extreme cases medication, can control the sodium urate levels and reduce the chances of the painful crystals forming.

RUNNING, whilst previously linked to causing problems in the knees and joints, such as osteoarthritis, could actually help prevent the disease occurring.

Scientists say a new study has led them to conclude that regular running could be good for your knees and does not increase your risk of developing osteoarthritis.

Knee x-rays were assessed for symptoms of the disease and for those who said they had run at some time in their lives, 22.8 per cent had symptoms of osteoarthritis, compared to 29.8 per cent of nonrunners.

PET owners are being warned to watch their animal’s diet over the Christmas season.

Treating your dog like one of the family and indulging it with the rich food from Christmas dinner can lead to serious health problems and land the animal at the vets.

Research shows that 56 per cent of owners will feed their dog potentially harmful foods, and 15 per cent of pet owners have taken their dog to the vet over Christmas as it has become ill because of the ‘treats’ it has been fed.

These include stuffing, raisins, chocolate, turkey and gravy, all of which can lead to intestinal problems, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Raisins and sultanas found in mince pies can result in kidney failure in their dogs.

Owners wanting to indulge their dogs should buy treats specially formulated for their animals.

NEW pet passports will soon be required for animals travelling abroad, but what does this mean for your dog, cat or ferret?

If your pet was given a passport before December 29, 2014, you do not need to get a new one. Your old one is valid. If your pet is given a pet passport after December 29, 2014, it will receive a new pet passport free of charge.

Which animals need a pet passport?

The new EU-system is for cats, dogs and ferrets.

Keeping your garden fertilized

SOME 30 years ago expatriates investing in a villa or old agricultural property in Spain often found they inherited fertile soil well fertilized naturally, perhaps over centuries, by mules, donkeys, horses, goats, sheep and free range poultry.

However, this type of land was soon sold up and by the boom of the 1980’s to 2000’s many villas and rows of townhouses were being built on overworked, impoverished land which would make it difficult to develop a garden without improving the soil before planting anything.

So what can be done?

First let me share some of the things we did.

By Spain’s best known expatriate gardening author living in Spain for 25 years.

1. One of the men who built the walls around our plot was a part time shepherd with a hundred sheep and goats. We asked if we could have a few sacks of well-rotted manure. Amazingly he had a heap which he wanted clearing. When we dug the first space full it had obviously been there for a good number of years and was nice and crumbly with no smell. Over a few days we moved six boot loads in

sacks and it was worked into our first shrub beds.

2. When we started our vegetable plot we discovered another heap which another shepherd was about to sell to a major vegetable grower. We asked if we could have a few sacks first. He said yes and said he would charge the equivalent of a euro a sack. We immediately shook hands on that and were even more pleased when we discovered it was full of thousands of fat red worms.

3. Within 10 years just half a flock of the original 11 in our valley had disappeared and it was not possible to obtain any manure. However we

found that a local agricultural cooperative sold inexpensive sacks of dried goat and sheep manure. Originally this was three euros a sack, 10 years later the price is five euros a sack and still good value.

4. Now we have a regular supply of rabbit manure from our rabbits grown for cooking ecological paellas plus manure from chickens grown for the same purpose.

The chicken droppings are added to the compost heap or composted in a separate pile for a year as they are too strong to use without first composting.

5. We have also experimented with growing green manures and working these into the soil as well as using spent mushroom composts.

Rents drop but yields rise

MARBELLA: Andalucian towns are leading the way.

Home sales are on the up as prices stabilise THERE were 79,561 homes sales in the third quarter of the year, up 1.4 per cent on the

previous three months.

It was also the second best figure in the last six quarters, with only the January to March total of 83,022 being better in that period.

The statistics from the Spanish Property Registrars show that the upward trend was due to resales which totalled 52,127, up 8.93 per cent from the previous quarter. By contrast sales of new homes fell 10.37 per cent in the same period to 27,434.

Leading the way was Andalucia, with a total of 16,006 transactions, with Valencia (12,189) next on the list, then Catalonia (11,975) and Madrid (10,883).

Increased sales have been reflected in a stabilisation of prices with just a 0.08 per cent

fall on the previous quarter, while year-onyear the prices rose 1.15 per cent.

The registrars gave the credit for recent good figures to price reductions averaging more than 32 per cent since the 2007 peak attracting foreign buyers.

Of homes sales, 13.1 per cent were to foreigners in the third quarter, a new record for Spain.

Britons accounted for 18 per cent of homes bought by foreign buyers, with the French accounting for 10.4 per cent, Russians 7.5 per cent, Germans 6.4 per cent, Belgians 6.1 per cent, Swedes 6 per cent and Italians 4.1 per cent.

In other figures just released by the National Institute of Statistics it would appear that the

quarterly rise was driven

by September’s figures.

Sales went up 13 per cent in that month and, excluding social housing, there were 24,096 sales registered, the highest level in four years and 14 per cent up on a monthly basis.

In the 12 months to the end of September there were 216,682 sales, almost identical to the same period last year.

On that basis it looks like the Spanish housing market is no longer shrinking, according to Mark Stucklin of Spanish Property Insight.

He pointed out that, looking at the annualised change in sales each month, this year clearly improved on last year, excluding the first two months of the year when

figures were artificially distorted by tax changes.

The data also shows that the difference between resales and newly built properties continues to widen, though sales of both types increased in September, with resales up 17 per cent and new builds up 10.5 per cent.

A breakdown of the figures on a regional basis show that the province of Malaga along with the Balearic Islands have seen sales rise close to 15 per cent this year.

The Canaries and Alicante have also been showing strong gains.

Coastal provinces where foreigners tend to buy are doing much better than provinces in the interior, which rely more on local demand.

THE Spanish Consumer Price Index (CPI) shows that the average price for long term rentals in Spain fell by 0.7 per cent in October compared to the same month in 2013.

Rental prices have been falling for 19 months in a row and the drop is sharper than the general CPI which is down 0.1 per cent.

Overall rental prices went down by 0.1 per cent on a monthly basis, with the monthly rate for long term rentals falling in 15 autonomous regions.

Asturias was the only region where it rose, up 0.1 per cent, and prices remained static in Catalonia.

The biggest price drops were in Navarra, down 2.3 per cent, Murcia down 2.1 per cent, La Rioja down 1.7 per cent, Madrid down 1.4 per cent, the Valencian Community down 1.2 per cent and Castilla La Mancha down 0.9 per cent.

Andalucia and Extremadura both saw a 0.8 per cent fall and prices dropped by 0.7 per cent in the Canaries, 0.6 per cent in Aragon, Cantabria, and Castilla y Leon, 0.4 per cent in the Basque Country and 0.2 per cent in the Balearics and Galicia.

Despite that, gross rental yields are on an upward trend. Rents may have been falling, but property prices up until last year fell faster.

BBC move on up the table

THE Javea Winter League team travelled to Quesada with one objective, to gain a win over nearest rivals Quesada, always a difficult team to beat but especially on their home ground.

All five rinks started well and four managed to keep up the momentum, Sheri Fletcher’s team kept it tight throughout but dropped a couple of big scores towards the end of the match to finish 13-28 down. Of the other four rinks the top overall score went to Alan Phillip’s team with an extraordinary shot difference of plus 18.

The berleen team lost 10-26 against Quesada’s top of the table team.

This latest win sees Javea now only four points adrift from Quesada.

Javea Onyx completed the winning week with a 91 win against FG Swifts.

THERE were eight more points for Benitachell BC’s Winter League team away to La Siesta. That took them into fourth place in the league, six points behind the leaders with two games in hand.

The Berleen Team also took the honours with three wins from four matches.

In the Northern League Jaguars were at home to Javea Green Quartz on a bright but blustery day.

Quartz, who were just one point above Jaguars in the table having played one more game, were keen to keep that lead. After some hard fought games Jaguars lost by 11 shots giving a points result 2-8 to Quartz.

The Challengers were on form and remain undefeated having won 18-15.

THE Coach Inn returned to the Woodbridge Oval for the season closing weekend and struggled with the unexpected sunlight and late nights that our area is renowned for.

Winning the toss and asking Sporting Alfas CC to set a score was possibly the biggest shock of the day as SACC amassed 275 runs from the 30 overs for the loss of no wickets and five batsmen retiring on 50+.

After tea things went further downhill for the visitors as Antonio Brown took three for 12 from his six overs, new to cricket Dell returned one for 19 from his six, another newby Locke held his nerve with a selection of quality spin and long hops to return figures of one for 28 from six. The club has started a new promotion for tag rugby for under- 12s and under-10s, to be held on Saturday mornings from 11am to 12.30pm, the first event was a success with 50 boys and girls joining in.
