A decade of caring for La Siesta’s elderly THE Age Concern Centre in La Siesta has been helping the local elderly community for a decade. To mark the 10th anniversary of the centre’s opening, the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, paid a special visit to the centre which was ceded to the charity by the town hall in 2004. Mayor Dolon was accompanied by Councillor for Foreigners, Rosario Martinez Chazarra, and Councillor for Social Welfare, Thomas Ballester, who are pictured with Age Concern volunteers. The delegates were shown
around by Age Concern President Maureen Payne who highlighted the work done by the 150-strong
team of volunteers. The centre welcomes 75 regular visitors, with 25 British residents currently
Technology addiction on the rise EIGHT per cent of Spanish children and adolescents suffer from a serious addiction to new technologies. Elche expert Rosa Diaz, who was speaking at the Fourth National Symposium of Clinical Psychology and Health of Children and Adolescents, said the problem was growing at such a rate that further research into psychological treatment was needed. Experts warn that such serious
addictions, related to the use of phones and video games, are usually associated with previous problems. Diaz remarked: “Adolescents, when they present a serious disorder, often suffer another underlying problem such as attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity, autism or developmental problems. However, there are activities which gratify them so much that they end up having addictive components.”

Age Concern’s origins are linked to the upheaval of the Second World War, which made life more difficult for older people. In 1998, it was established in Torrevieja in Los Balcones before moving to La Torreta III and establishing the centre in La Siesta 10 years ago.
