Help needed to chase a bike-racing dream
By Dilip Kuner A YOUNG Anglo-Spanish motorbike racer faces a financial mountain if he is to climb into the big time. Javi Orellana Malloy, 17, is one of the most promising young riders in Europe, and has come off the back of a successful 2014 season in the European Junior Cup where he finished second in the championship – the entry level for World Superbikes. His talent has not gone unnoticed with several offers on the table to move up to the Superstock 600 series for 15 to 22 year olds. But in order to do that he has to ‘buy’ his place, and with
the cheapest deal on the table costing €40,000, he may have to say goodbye to his dreams of competing in the World Superbike championships within a few years. That €40,000 is an entry level fee, a ride in a competitive team can cost up to €120,000 for one season. For the last three years he has raced in the European Junior Cup, finishing third in his first year, seventh in his second and an agonising second in the third. Agonising because he went into the final race at Magny-Cours with a chance of winning the title. Turn to Page 19
