Tram makes a surprise return trip from Sydney

THE controversial Velez-Malaga tram could be reopened by 2015 after the first of three cars rented out to the Australian city of Sydney made a surprise return to the town. Mayor of Velez Malaga, Francisco

Delgado Bonilla, emphasised the willingness of the council to resume the service despite the high cost, as long as the Junta de Andalucia regional government helped to pay the bills.

But that could be a large tab to pick up, with Mayor Bonilla saying the Junta should pay 75 per cent of the €3 million annual deficit the service ran up. The Junta had committed to help

Retro fever in La Herradura RETRO car enthusiasts had a chance to revive the good old days last weekend in La Herradura. Called VII Classic Volkswagen Meet-up, the event gathered 38 Volkswagen cars and vans from every corner of Andalucia as well as Murcia, Alicante, Melilla and even the UK. The vehicles were manufactured between 1958 and 2000 and were paraded around the town from Peña Parda to the Marina del Este harbour, escorted by Local Police. The event was staged by Club VW Granada of La Herradura. Head of the association, Francisco Escoriza, thanked the council for the interest it had shown in the event and the services it had provided to help ensure the safety of everyone involved.

pay the deficit during a visit of former president Manuel Chaves in 2009, according to Bonilla. When the trams were shipped to Australia in July 2013, the council announced that they were to stay there for two years, but the first has made an early return with speculation mounting that the service could resume by the beginning of next year. Even though bus services are used by only 8.1 per cent of the Velez-Malaga population, there has been an increase of more than 15,000 users between January and August, compared with the same period last year, a trend which explains the desire of the council to reopen the tram service. The tram, which cost €40 million, became operational in 2006, but was closed in 2012 due to its high annual running costs. It connected the centre of Velez-Malaga with the coast of Torre del Mar.
