Almeria Airport schedules winter season destinations ALMERIA Airport is providing 18 destinations during the 2014/2015 winter season, including seven international connections.

In total, airlines have scheduled more than 110,300 seats on 1,100 flights until March 28, 2015. Regular flights to London and Brussels will be maintained as well as domestic routes like Barcelona, Madrid, Sevilla, Palma de Mallorca and Melilla. Some international destinations will run for several weeks but not the entire season; for example, Birmingham, Dublin, Manchester and Nottingham. Three new domestic routes begin for the winter: Bilbao, Santander and Zaragoza.

The Tabernas Desert is enjoying a revival in the movies currently, with film epics including Exodus and Clavius being shot there, and Arnold Schwarzenegger looking to reprise his former role as Conan the Barbarian.

From 1950 to 1970, it was the setting for many Westerns.

With more than 11,600 acres, the desert was declared a nature reserve in 1989.

Police reel in tuna poacher OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil’s environmental arm, Seprona, surprised a fisherman after he had caught a bluefin tuna during the closed season.

Seprona enforce rules that govern the conservation of nature and the environment, as well as hunting, fishing and forestry.

During their standard duties, Seprona received a report from the Maritime Service alerting them to the presence of several boats about four kilometres off the coast of Cabo de Gata.

It was suggested that the boats may have been fishing for bluefin tuna.

The Seprona officers proceeded to a high point in the town, so they could get a better view of the

NDALUCIA’S famous Cueva del Gato could soon be open to the public - or at least part of it could be. More than 15kilometres in length, the cave complex has long been the exclusive domain of potholers and cave explorers; daredevils who have witnessed the splendorous beauty of a spectacular underground world.

Plans are afoot to open the first 400 metres of the cave to the public in an effort to promote tourism to the region of Ronda and Benaojan, home of Cueva del Gato, one of two entrances to the cave.

However, experts are now assessing the possibility of opening up a section of Cueva del Gato to visitors with safety measures being put in place.

T’S November already and in just a few short weeks our thoughts will begin turning to the Christmas season; a season that seems to enjoy a longer build-up as each year goes by.

But before we start humming Christmas tunes and getting the decorations down from the attic, we have November to contend with, a time when the days and nights get that little bit colder, darkness descends that bit earlier, and facial hair on the upper lips of men seems to sprout from nowhere.

So why the proliferation of moustaches of all shapes and sizes on men that otherwise spend the rest of the year clean-shaven? Why it’s ‘Movember’ of course. Growing in popularity each year, Movember is the month when men of all ages and from different walks of life

grow a moustache in order to raise money and awareness for men’s health, in particular prostate and testicular cancer.

From humble beginnings back in 2004 when a group of 30 friends in Australia decided to grow moustaches during November, the Movember Foundation now boasts around four million ‘mo bros’ worldwide and has raised hundreds of millions of dollars for men’s health.

The trend has caught on in Spain, with the country being one of 21 countries across the world that participates in Movember.

So don’t be too surprised if you notice a lot of dodgy-looking moustaches doing the rounds during Movember.

Phone theft was fabricated AN investigation began after a man, JFC, claimed his mobile phone had been snatched in Garrucha.

The alleged victim claimed that he was walking along the promenade in Garrucha, chatting to his wife on his mobile phone, when a person pretending to be a jogger snatched the phone from his hand.

Initial inquiries revealed no witnesses to the event or anything similar.

Officers interviewed the alleged victim and also requested the telephone number of his wife, to confirm that he had been speaking to her at the time he claimed. It emerged that the incident was fabricated and the man had made up the

events in order to claim a new mobile from the phone company. JFC was arrested and has been charged with falsifying a crime report, and with

fraud as the phone company had given him a replacement model. The man and the full details of the case have been presented to the court.

Robbery claim leads to arrest DURING October, officers from the Guardia Civil responded to a report of an armed robbery in Vera.

In a report to the Guardia Civil, the alleged victim, PMDD, claimed that his local had been held up at gunpoint by two youths brandishing a handgun. He said they had escaped with €4,400. However, during the investigation, officers suspected all was not as it seemed and began a second line of inquiry.

It then emerged that PMDD had also improperly gained various amounts of money from customers on the premises. After collating all the information, the officers arrested PMDD on suspicion of falsifying a crime.

The accused and the full details of the case have been presented to the court.

Money laundering charges dropped ALMERIA Provincial Court has acquitted a man on trial for money laundering.

The man was facing more than three years in prison on charges of laundering more than €100,000 through a

catering company of which he was the sole director.

MMRO, convicted in 2009 for drug trafficking, was accused of filtering money gained from drug trafficking through his business.

On the trail of the best tapas in Huercal Overa HUERCAL OVERA is hosting its fourth edition of the Ruta de Tapas (Tapas Trail) until November 16.

The court concluded that with regard to the revenue under investigation, specifically two large deposits, it could not be proven to have been deposited under the circumstances the prosecution claimed. The man declared that one deposit of €27,695 was for a catering contract awarded at the time. In addition, the company expanded during the time period under investigation with company shares worth €95,000 being sold to a third party.

The court described this as information that significantly altered the accounting analysis and led to a blurring of the suspicion of criminal origins of funds.

The court pointed out that the man had not provided correct accounts for the commercial register, which breached the essential duty of every business owner. However, this indicated his managerial ineptitude and was too grey an area to attribute to the crime of money laundering.

Fair does the business LAST week, Euro Weekly News (EWN) reported on the recent La Alfoquia Community fair and how well received it had been in the area with locals and visitors clamouring to get involved, raising €838.95 for local causes.

The event was well attended, with people keen to enter the competitions or the dog shows, or simply enjoy some live music or do a little shopping for handmade goods. The atmosphere was buzzing with a mix of British, Irish and Spanish residents and visitors mingling together to enjoy a great day for local causes.

Macael day care centre New jobs for MACAEL Town Council is opening a new day care centre aimed at children aged from three to 11.

Councillor for Social Welfare, Ana Casquet, reported: “It is a very interesting project aimed at creating

employment for our young people.

Three technicians and four monitors will be hired and it will support families.”

The centre will be based at the town hall and runs from early

November to the end of April 2015, from 3pm until 8pm. Families will pay just €5 per month per child to cover material costs. Activities will include craft workshops, gymkhanas, singing and dancing workshops and games.

SIXTEEN young residents of Olula del Rio now have work through the Emple@Joven programme from the Junta.

Mayor of Olula del Rio, Antonio Martinez Pascual, welcomed the youngsters to their new roles which last for two months. Roles include construction labouring, gardening,

administrative assistance, sports instruction and day care. The Junta is bearing the cost which totals €139,670.

For youngsters to qualify for the roles, they needed to be enrolled into the youth employment programme in March 2014 and be aged between 18 and 29.

You’ve caught me LOCAL POLICE in El Ejido got a little more than they bargained for during a routine vehicle inspection.

Officers were carrying out spot checks for documentation, weapons and illegal substances when they pulled over a 32-year-old resident of a town near Barcelona, in his Citroen C4. Officers asked him for his documentation but the man exited the vehicle, placed his hands on his head and said: “You’ve caught me.”

An inspection of the vehicle revealed that the man was transporting 62.7 kilograms of hashish in the boot.

The drugs have an estimated value of more than €120,000.

The women have been learning key skills in selfdefence at the Women’s Centre in Huercal Overa through the province’s Department of Welfare, Social Equality and Family.

The aim of the initiative is to provide women with theoretical tools to enable them to identify situations of gender violence and deal with them appropriately in addition to learning key defence skills in an attack situation.

Police in fire rescue drama WHEN fire broke out at a house in Cantoria, police had to come to the rescue of a mother and daughter trapped on a balcony.

Officers received a report of a fire in the town, and raced to the scene while also alerting the fire service.

The blaze had spread throughout the lower part of the house, but thick smoke

had permeated the entire building, leaving a mother and daughter trapped.

The mother, aged 45, and daughter, 16, were stuck out on a balcony.

Albox Fair ALBOX Town has been ablaze with colour, music and laughter during its recent annual fair.

During the day, there was entertainment of all types to keep families happy. Children’s games and concerts, classic cars, a bird show, a cattle fair and market stalls, as well as the launch of a new book detailing the history of Albox.

Among the fair’s most anticipated events were concerts

by Soul Smash, the Dry Mouths and La Skala Richter and the popular Andalucian rock band Medina Azahara, who entertained the crowds with a free concert until late into the night.

Of course, no Spanish fair would be complete without traditional music and this was supplied by groups including Sevillan dance troupe Nuestra Señora del Saliente and the town’s Cerricos. Orchestras entertained crowds every night at the municipal hall. Food stalls overflowing with local gastronomy and treats were on every corner to sustain the crowds as they enjoyed what the fair had to offer.

Prostitution racket broken in Almeria NATIONAL POLICE officers have broken up an organisation allegedly engaged in the smuggling of Russian women into Almeria for prostitution.

During the operation, 19 people were arrested and 16 were charged.

The girls came from various locations in Russia answering job advertisements.

The agency was responsible for

organising visas and work permits using false documents.

From 2005 to 2012, ongoing investigations all but eradicated organisations of this type. The networks were sexually exploiting women and controlling more than 20 strip clubs.

Cardboard collection service aims to tidy up retail areas HUERCAL OVERA Council is starting a free cardboard collection service in commercial areas of the town to help combat mess and cluttered streets.

The initiative began after complaints that cardboard and paper were being deposited alongside specified containers without being folded or crushed, thereby being spread around the streets by the slightest gust of

wind. The brand new service is free and begins with immediate effect.

From November to January, cardboard will be collected on Tuesdays and Thursdays. From February to November the collection will be on Tuesdays.

Almanzora is normally a tranquil place on a Sunday morning.

However, when the IndaloH3 hashers arrived, that all changed. One of the hashing group members was celebrating his 150th hash, unaware of the surprise that lay in store.

After a coffee and catch-up the hashers formed their circle and the hares explained the routes and marks. Then the celebratory member was called up and provided with a big balloon to carry. The runners had to wait for five minutes as they were following a live hare, so the walkers

BERJA School of Music is starting a campaign in December to collect food for those in need.

The initiative culminates with a concert on December 27, organised by the Virgitana Musical Society. Sixty students from the music school will be performing, when

admission will be free, as a final push to hit the target.

The group’s aim is to collect 1,000 kilograms of nonperishable food for Berja’s Caritas group.

Although the concert is not until December 27, people can donate food throughout the month.

also plans another charity concert with 50 musicians at Easter next year.

Proceeds from that concert, for which admission will not exceed €2, will go to the Cancer Association of Berja. “We just want to help as much as we can,” said Manuel Ayala, director of the musical society.

Star attraction at the fair CUEVAS DEL ALMANZORA’S fair begins on November 12 and runs until November 16.

This year the fair will feature the winner of La Voz 2013, David Barrul, who is already generating excitement amongst fans ready to travel to hear their idol sing. Other attractions include the homecoming queen, a giant tortilla and children’s shows as well as horse riding displays and more.

Mayor Mariela Poveda said: “We hope to be a success and would like to invite everyone from the region to come and enjoy the shows.”

This year, plans to feed more than 700 elderly residents of Cuevas have already begun in earnest. Regarding the food, Poveda said: “This act of coexistence with our elders is one of the most moving events that we celebrate each year.”

Suits for newborns designed in Valencia A NEW project has created a bodysuit for babies which will automatically detect problems in newborns including sepsis and heart problems.

The new suit – made of hypoallergenic cotton with minute, almost transparent, sensors incorporated – has been designed by Peditec, a new paediatric technology investigation team with members from Valencia General Hospital and Polytechnic University (UPV) and trials have been carried out on 100 volunteer babies between one day and two weeks old.

UPV Electronics professor Javier Saiz explained that the wireless sensors send data to computer software which analyses algorithms to detect heartbeat variations and signs of sepsis.

The decision to film parts of Season Five of the hugely popular HBO fantasy series in Sevilla and in the town of Osuna has already had a direct impact on the area.

US Ambassador to Spain, James Costos, himself a former HBO executive, said initial figures show that tourism to the area has gone up by around 15 per cent since filming began two weeks ago.

By Dilip Kuner THE mother of cerebral palsy sufferer Keira Alvarez Turner is doing a sponsored head shave to raise funds for desperately-needed specialist treatment for her daughter.

Keira, who is six-and-a-half years old, needs €15,000 to travel to the US for the specialist care which makes a huge difference to the quality of her life.

Last year, Euro Weekly News (EWN) reported on her need for funds, and generous readers along with the Moraira Charity Shop, Original Charity Shop Javea, Eurochange and Liars Bar rallied round to raise the thousands of euros needed for treatment within just a few days. That money was spent on treatments in Spain in 2013.

Now she has booked a third trip to Orlando for August 2, 2015, and is launching her fundraising effort with a sponsored head shave at Benidorm’s Levis Showboat bar on Wednesday, November 12, at around midnight.

Debbie explained she has had to put off fundraising for Keira this year as she needed to devote time to her son, Rylee, four, who has autism. “Fundraising takes up so much time, and I just had to give between 4pm and 9pm and Saturdays from 9am to 2pm.

Try to work on accurately calculating projected income and balancing outgoings with income. A community far beyond your business doors will be harmed if you get it wrong.

Businesses also get into financial difficulties when expectations of income are exaggerated and outgoings airily dismissed. I recall an employee who thought all was well because the till was stuffed with banknotes. What he should have been looking at were

the cheque book stubs.

There is a saying in business: “Turnover is vanity, profit is sanity, but cash is king.”

Getting it right is a fine balancing act. Constantly monitor expenditure. If you can get by without it then ditch it.

If you sensibly predict income, realistically assess outgoings, learn the dark arts of minimising outgoings whilst maximising income, whilst keeping customers happy, your business will prosper.

A crumb of comfort for those facing difficulties. It has been calculated that self-made millionaires on average suffered seven bankruptcies before they hit success.

Markets refocus on economic data

TERLING / Euro movements were heavily affected by the run up and then the aftermath of the Scottish referendum vote.

As we approached polling day the pound tumbled sharply as polls identified that the outcome was neck and neck. The unprecedented uncertainty that a Yes vote would have delivered sent shock waves through the financial markets and the pound suffered heavy losses as the possibility of a Yes vote became very real. On the day of the vote itself the markets were more confident of a No vote and this led to a recovery in the pound.

On official confirmation of the No vote the pound rallied further still hitting a two year high against the euro.

Attention is now shifting back towards economic data from both the UK and the Eurozone which will determine the future

positive and hence why the pound is hitting two year highs against the euro.

The euro is under pressure across the currency markets and in particular against the USD. The European Central Bank have cut their main interest rate to 0.05 per cent and cut the deposit rate into negative territory. However there is concern that current measures may not be enough as data continues to disappoint and inflation is still softening. The next step for the ECB would be full blown quantitative easing, which is weighing on the euro overall and if announced could see further weakness for the single currency with GBP/EUR pushing towards 1.35.

However, it is probably unlikely that we will see QE this year and it will probably come, if at all, after December’s release of the second tranche of the TLTRO programme uptake.

The approach by firms would be subject to a “number of conditions,” Salamander said.

Check it out WE have just returned from the worst holiday ever, so a word of warning on booking a holiday.

If the advert says “We pick you up from your house,” ask for the route. We were collected at 5.45am and after running around on a coach for three and a quarter hours were only 30 minutes from home!

Also ask what type of transport they use: we were on a small runaround for 12 hours. It was like sitting on a spin-dryer for the whole journey.

Do your homework on the location and accommodation. We booked a cruise and required an outside cabin for fresh air and a quiet time. We were not told that the only outside cabins were directly below the activities deck!

We were lucky: some people had cabins directly below the disco.

So the moral of our story is check, check and then check again.

Dressing up POOR Mike Walsh!

Having become a solid member of the style police he is missing a few very important points about dress and performance.

He is clearly unaware that Mr Steve Jobs built the Apple computer empire by allowing his employees to dress in whatever mode made them feel good: look at the result.

The hoary old uniform and suit argument just doesn’t gel with the facts. As a retired business advisor I have continued researching the psychological impact of Mr Walsh’s attitude versus Steve Jobs’.

Sorry Mr. Walsh, but for business performance the facts are against you. Howard Hughes, a billionaire, dressed like a poor man for a great many years before his demise. Many great artists and entrepreneurs of all types have shared that mode of dress by desire or circumstances.

To judge a person by their clothes is about as narrowminded as it is possible to get.

I listen to a variety of local English-speaking radio stations and it has now become the norm for radio presenters to chatter on about everything other than the artist singing.

During a long drive that lasted over two hours only one artist’s name was given! What is wrong with presenters? Surely the role of DJs is to actually present music? That means informing the listening public of the title of the song and the artist.

Can we have less of the inane chatter and incessant promotions of everything other than the music played?

Come on local radio DJs, start behaving like professional radio presenters.

Long way I HAVE just read a Euro Weekly News article about the increased number of people using Alicante airport.

A lot of this is due to the fact Jet2 are not using Murcia airport during the winter months, to the inconvenience of thousands of people living in the area.

Sadly my husband died a few years ago, but I still spend the winter months in La Manga. A few months ago when trying to book my flights for this winter I found none landed at Murcia and I was left with the only option of Alicante airport.

There are no Jet2 flights to Murcia until the end of March next year and none of the other airlines offer flights. Alicante is a good airport but there is no public transport down to La Manga and a taxi costs €120, so we are left

with no choice but to hire a car which does not come cheap.

I hope you can print this letter as the loss of these flights affects a lot of people.

Christmas cheer ONCE again San Miguel de Salinas Social Services are asking for help with their Christmas campaign for the less fortunate of our local community.

There are over 70 families, all with at least three children up to the age of 17, registered with Social Services in the village.

They are asking for nonperishable foods along with some festive fare and toys so they can make up food parcels and gifts for Christmas and the Three Kings.

The main collection point is in the old town hall in San Miguel, but a number of local restaurants, bars and businesses have kindly agreed to be collection points.

These are Dolphin Properties, Captain Morgan’s Bar, Mirador Restaurant and The Nook. Social Services are asking for all items to be in to them by December 5 so they can be individually wrapped for each family and child.

With your kind help and donations we can make this appeal as successful as last year’s.

UST had to happen, didn’t it? It was as predictable as the flowers in May or the X Factor judges using the word ‘amazing’ about a million times a show.

We are now being asked to feel sorry for some of these young toerags who left UK shores to side with the odious ISIS. “It’s not their fault,” cry the ‘uman rights brigade.

It’s the media allowing the evil radicalizers to publicise their views that should be taking the blame for their terrorist temptations. What a load of pure unadulterated claptrap! I don’t care how ‘fresh faced,’ ‘well liked’ and ‘innocent’ these young men and women were.

They are evil psychopaths who have committed treason against the country that

nurtured them and partaken in unforgivable acts of satanic terrorism. If they return to British shores, all of them must be locked away for life. “Oh, but some of them are too frightened to come back,” wail the parents, who should, to my mind, be locked up as well.

The poor diddums have become fed up with sawing off people’s heads and shooting unarmed victims in the back.

“We wanna come home now, Mum.” Get back to how it all was before we decided to run off and kill people.

Well I’ve got news for them.

They have all forfeited their right to ever live among decent human beings again. They are the scum of the earth and so is anyone who supports them including the lawyers who are no doubt gathering like the vultures they are to once more bleed the British taxpayer out of millions, fighting cases that will no doubt drag on for years. If I had my way I’d lock them up as well. To me they are not much better

than the non-human rubbish they will be earning millions to defend.

Shouldn’t really be angry this week. Things are actually quite good. For the next two weeks I am appearing back in the old Motherland with shows as far apart as Norfolk and Blackpool.

Channel 5’s OAPs Behaving Badly is coming over to film my Flying Curry Circus Christmas party on December 13. Venue to be announced. Plug plug! (Yes, I am doing it again, despite the fact that I’m still trying to live down the first one!) My double pneumonia is finally over and hopefully I don’t have prostate cancer. The Fall series 2 air date revealed: BBC Two drama back November 13 Richard Shanley

he Fall is coming back to the BBC next month, it has been confirmed.

Gillian Anderson and Jamie Dornan’s drama will return to BBC Two for its second series on Thursday, November 13.

Hannibal star Anderson plays DSI Stella Gibson opposite Dornan (Fifty Shades of Grey) as serial killer Paul Spector. Series two will focus on the continuing game of cat and mouse between the pair.

The cast and crew of The Fall recently confirmed that it was always the intention to bring back the BBC original drama for a second run, after the first series was left on a

cliffhanger. Creator Allan Cubitt said: “These [sorts of] cases are complex and take an enormous amount of time to solve, so I always thought it would be well-served by running on.”

NSURPRISINGLY, a huge leap in UKIP support was reported following the £1.7 billion EU surcharge imposed on the UK to reflect the ‘black economy’ of illegal drugs, prostitution and tobaccosmuggling within its GDP. Now, this isn’t a molehill, it’s a mountain! The EU’s penalising the UK for having the most successful economy in the EU, whilst rewarding countries like France for being economic basket cases!

And as for the EU’s attempts to dismiss the problem by claiming these are the rules, no way! The

EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT: The EU needs deep reform. real issue is: how have the rules been interpreted and applied? It seems blindingly obvious different countries have different ways of operating. And that the UK has taken a more meticulous

approach to reporting income from such intangible sources as drugs, prostitution and tobaccosmuggling than Germany, France or Austria - all lined up for rebates. Or maybe failed to smell

a rat where others, more savvy, did?

Unfortunately, Britain is a land of rule-makers and administrators. Show it a rule, and it’ll be applied unquestioningly. Other countries decide on different criteria.

The real tragedy of the EU is that the shedloads of tax-payers’ money which have been and are still being wasted - on moving between Strasbourg and Brussels, bloated bureaucracy, pay and allowances, and duplicated diplomatic representation - would, spent sensibly under individual nations’ control, have resulted in greater prosperity and better defence against terrorists.

The EU is like a rudderless ship driven by ideology and holed below the waterline. Rather than make crucial structural repairs, it settles for quick-fixes and takes on more payload (regulation,

centralisation and bureaucracy) so guaranteeing it slinks further behind and deeper in the water.

And unless it endorses immediate reform - including reduction of bureaucracy and regulation, liberalisation of labour markets, overhaul of immigration controls - the UK runs the risk of going down with it.

Finally, let’s return to that £1.7 billion surcharge that, we’re told, now takes account of drugs, prostitution and tobaccosmuggling. Doesn’t this number somehow indicate the UK spends more on those items than basic foodstuffs? Given my own food bill, it seems some of my fellow citizens are having a lot more fun than me! AM of the generation that looks back with fond memories at the simplicity of life in the 1950s and 60s. If you received a bill, you wrote out a cheque, shoved it in the reply paid envelope and popped it in the letterbox. What has happened since?

I will tell you: they said computers would make our lives easier. We receive a €20 subscription renewal payable online.

Logging on, the complexity of navigation makes progress virtually impossible. We finally reach ‘pay’ but our troubles are only just beginning.

Our bank, in its lack of wisdom, now requires online payments to be authorised by using codes printed on the back of a plastic card: fail. Although assured our cards were kosher we now find ours had been wrongly registered. Before a replacement card solution is arrived at, a series of computer hurdles that would try the patience of a NASA scientist must be gone through.

Our internet service provider messes up

its accounts. As a consequence an incorrect payment anomaly shows up. No, they don’t sort out their problem. They need bank approved proof of our payments to satisfy them that we have indeed paid. This necessitates several time-consuming trips between the bank and the service supplier’s offices.

Henry Ford was wasting his time when he said: “If it aint broke don’t fix it.” A basic can-opener was in the kitchen drawer in my young life. Accused with an associate of stashing an illegal €5.8 million in Switzerland, he is an exsenator and was second in charge after Esperanza Aguirre when she was Regional President of the Madrid Community.

Aguirre, who is now Secretary General of the regional PP, insisted that she didn’t have “the slightest idea” of what Granados was up to.

In the same breath she called for the courts to speed up the ongoing Gurtel case - another pun,

this time on the surname of its principal player Francisco Correa, incidentally.

After six years it still hasn’t come to court, Aguirre complained.

Not that she was trying to deflect attention away from Granados, of course.

Mysterious trip cover-ups and reason behind them

Ric Polansky Ric Polansky moved to Mojacar in 1969 as a pioneer developer. He reads extensively and has travelled in South America panning gold and looking for El Dorado.

“ENRIQUE,” she whispered to me. Hell! I jumped right out of my skin. I hadn’t seen her come in or how she got right to the foot of my desk without me noticing.

“I need a favour.” She spoke softly.

“Today my husband will ask you to take us on a trip to Huercal Overa on Friday.

Please say no. Say you have something else scheduled.”

That was unusual. Antonia, wife of my brother’s gardener, had just spoken to me. It was the first time that I could recall - ever. I gave her my best perplexed look and tilted my head down to stare at my desk. When I lifted my eyes to make further enquiries, she was gone.

Now, what that was all about troubled me. But, daily events came at me from all angles while learning to live in my newlyadopted kingdom of Spain. And, yup, Luis did ask me if I could drive him to Huercal Overa for a few hours on Friday.

The next Monday, Antonia was back in my office, dressed in the same black frock she always wore and extremely nervous.

She wanted to know if she could invite me and the family for paella on Sunday. “Ya, I guess that’s alright,” I muttered. And: “Oh, if Luis asks you to take him to

Her words were precise, exacting, and pleading.

While my mind became a fog again, wondering what this ‘driving affair’ was all about, Antonia vanished again. Well, we

had eaten paella every Sunday for the last three months at Luis’s restaurant and we paid this time just like all the others. No special deal. Hmmm, something’s up. A mystery, unheard of between grass-root friends. Life was an open book living in Mojacar. Everyone knew the comings, goings, and bowel movements of

everyone else. Life was lived in a goldfish bowl and shared openly - like it or not.

But, the perplexity of the mystery confounded me so very much it got the wheels of my head spinning day and night. However, thinking about it enough brought a mini-solution. I would ‘reverse order the puzzle’ and make the information flow my way. I sought out Luis and apologised that I hadn’t been able to aid his journeys because of car problems. Would this Wednesday or Thursday be OK? “Oh, that’s wonderful,” he replied as if a weight had been lifted from him. “It’s not for me,” he announced. “It’s to take Antonia to the dentist. She moans and groans all night about her toothache; none of us can sleep.”

The dentist adventure was a four-hour ordeal and I didn’t blame her for not wanting to go. I wish I hadn’t. It was a medieval experience that I can only tell when plied with much drink, and even then, most reluctantly.

SEPTEMBER: Back at home a bit bruised and sore, but happy to be in familiar surroundings. The next few days would be all about rest, getting my drain taken out when the levels had dropped sufficiently and above all taking things easy with my right arm.

I was under strict instructions not to lift anything or to exert myself in any way. I had been unaware initially what the long term implications of having all my lymph nodes removed would be.

As I no longer had a lymphatic drainage system I could be left with a serious side effect called Lymphedema.

Lymphedema is a condition of localised fluid retention and tissue swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system which returns liquid to the thoracic duct and then the bloodstream.

So tissues with lymphedema are at risk of infection and swelling.

There are exercises and physiotherapy you can do to

Prevention is better than cure! Hence no lifting, no lying on the affected side, no tight clothing and, in the longer term, avoidance of rigorous sports and when doing any sport I would have to wear an arm support for compression purposes.

For me this was going to be the most challenging aspect!

The cancer and operations I could deal with, but the prospect of possibly not being

able to play racket sports for the long term or even indefinitely was going to be tough to take.

You just have to find alternatives or learn to play left handed!

Also the realisation that the simplest tasks, in the short term, would be impossible hit home - no chopping food, washing up, changing the beds, opening things, lifting and definitely no driving for a few weeks.

So what do you do? Adapt.

Necessity is the mother of all

invention. I started to use my left arm for most tasks.

The sight of me sitting on my kitchen work surface on top of a grater and using my left hand to muster a sprinkling of lemon zest must have been something else!

Incidentally, freeze lemons and grate the rinds into your food, not only does it intensify the flavour but it is supposed to be an enemy to cancer so a friend to us!

Don’t get too down over these smaller issues and find another way of doing things.

We are all stronger than we imagine it’s just that we don’t realise it until we are tested.

Draw on your inner strength and you will be amazed how you overcome every obstacle put in your way. For me every day got better, I ate well thanks to the army of Spanish neighbours and friends bringing food to my door like ants!

My son became my nurse and changed my bandages, much to his credit, as many adults would have balked at the sight of my scars.

For those of you who have cancer and have children, my tip is to be as honest as possible but carry on as normal.

Every cloud has a silver lining and my illness has given us all an opportunity to recalibrate. It was time the children took on more responsibility domestically

and they have stepped up to the challenge.

Aside from cooking, cleaning, washing and general household chores, it has become a time for them to show greater maturity and autonomy.

It has been tough for them but pulling together helps me along the road to recovery so I applaud their efforts and their spirit despite some grumbles at first!

My hope is that living through this experience will make them more resilient and better able to cope with the challenges that life will inevitably throw at them over the coming years.

Lead by example. If you are a bag of nerves just imagine how your children and people around you will feel!

No shame in having a good cry, I hold my hand up!

It is a good release but get over it and dust yourself off and get off the canvas.

A little dramatic? Not really you are in a battle for your life.

You have to go the full 10 rounds so come out your corner fighting with your gloves up.

You will beat cancer with a positive attitude. Your illness is a journey and one that will deal you curve balls.

My curve ball was just about to be launched… the phone call I had been waiting for with my operation results came. The news was not good.

Scientists at a dental college and hospital in India have tested a chocice containing a friendly bacteria, which is normally found in the human intestines, to see if it had any effect on streptococcus, the strain of bacteria that commonly causes sore throats.

Thirty volunteers were asked to eat a choc-ice every day for 18 days.

Bar Restaurante Laguna TWENTY-SIX-YEARS ago two brothers came to visit their parents and fell in love with the area so they stayed, built and opened the Millionaire Bar, then a year later Nigel and Stuart moved to the Restaurant Bar Laguna where they have been for the last 25 years.

THERE are few properties that would not be enhanced by one or two window boxes placed on a window sill, edge of a balcony, or the wall of an apartment terrace.

Window boxes planted with traditional geraniums, or a wide range of other suitable plants, are an easy way to brighten up the facades of some otherwise drab houses and apartment blocks throughout the year.

Why window boxes?

1. To brighten up the outlook from windows and doors onto balconies and terraces.

2. To provide a screen from prying eyes.

3. To brighten up the appearance of the house from outside.

4.

To give the appearance the house or apartment is lived in.

5. To brighten up dull courtyards.

6. To brighten up the semi shade under large trees by hanging window boxes directly from boughs or on hanging shelves.

Overcoming problem of plastic coated aluminium windows Most houses have convenient wide window sills that provide space for window boxes between the window frames and wrought iron security grills.

Some also have small balconies with metal railings. However most modern plastic/aluminium windows with integral double glazing and security blinds result in very narrow

or even no sills. Fortunately many garden centres now stock window boxes with metal supports that can be hung below the window sill.

Similar supports can be attached to the railings of an apartment terrace.

What to plant?

All year round: Zonal and trailing geraniums/pelargoniums - except in heavy frost/snow when they need to be put in a cold frame or greenhouse for the winter.

Spring, summer and autumn: Trailing petunias, portulacas, zonal and trailing geraniums/pelargoniums, carnations, felicia /agathaea, succulents and in the shade fuchsias and busy lizzies.

Spring: Trailing sweet peas, verbena and freesias.

Autumn and winter: Heathers and pansies.

Winter: Cyclamens, poinsettias, pansies, stocks and bulbs.

Cats that are aggressive to humans

IF a previously friendly cat starts biting or scratching you, it is essential you take it to the vet. A cat in pain from dental disease, cystitis, arthritis or injury may bite when handled.

It may bite if it is seriously ill or if it has a brain tumour. Pregnant cats or cats with litters are aggressive in defence of their litters. When the kittens have grown up, the mother’s behaviour usually alters.

NEVER punish or chase. This will intensify aggression. Ignore bad behaviour by walking away, keeping silent (no screams), withdrawing eye contact, no confrontations. Reward calm behaviour with cat treats.

Avoid situations which will result in cat aggression. The difficulty for owners is working out what kind of aggression they are dealing with. This is where help from a cat behaviour counsellor can be essential to help reduce and manage the aggression.

Aggression to humans often results from fear. The problem may arise from a dysfunctional kittenhood. The kitten is brought up without enough contact with humans, and therefore will never become domesticated. To be truly domesticated, kittens need to be handled before the age of eight weeks. Relatively socialised cats may still bond, but probably only to close family. It will be best to give this kind of cat plenty of space and independence. Allow the cat to initiate contact with you, as this freedom to choose will result in more, rather than less, affection.

Cats under stress may also become aggressive to owners. In general try to reduce the stress in this cat’s life, so it becomes less anxious. More next week.

Ruling raises question: to sell or not to sell?

HOME sellers in Spain can take advantage of a new tax measure.

The central government has introduced a new tax reform act for 2015 that will mean a significant tax reduction for many citizens.

Owners who are in the process of selling their homes will be affected by the new measure, since the capital gain will in future be calculated without the correction coefficients that allowed compensation for inflation and the reduction of increased value.

That means that someone who bought a

house in 2004 at €150,000 and sold it now for €200,000, would pay €10,880 in IRPF tax under current legislation. But if they held on until January 1, the amount would be reduced to €7,207.

But for those who bought their houses more than 20 years ago it may be advisable to accelerate the selling process.

A house bought in 1976 at two million pesetas (€12,020), sold now at €222,000 would pay €10,869 tax (IRPF) under the current legislation.

The modification of the act would see a dramatic increase in the

tax paid, to €43,995 after January 1.

For this reason, it may be advisable for those owners who have owned their homes for a long time to speed up the selling process before January 1, to avoid the tax increase.

On the whole, the modification is good news for owners who bought their homes after 1994, who will enjoy a tax reduction and it may well be worth waiting until the New Year before selling up.

People should seek professional advice on these points for the full ramifications of the changes.

Mortgage cash is starting to flow

THERE were a total of 15,040 new mortgages granted on homes in August at an average value of €102,430.

That was an increase of 5.3 per cent in the value of mortgages given on August 2013, and there was a 31 per cent rise in the total capital loaned year on year to €1.54 billion. Both figures are good news from the property market as they show liquidity is starting to flow from banks once more.

In the depths of the banking crisis many prospective home owners found it extremely difficult to finance the purchase of a property as the banks, many bailed out by Spanish and European tax payers, refused to pass on the billions of euros received to consumers. Nervous of being more exposed to bad debts after the property bubble burst, they held on to the

bailout payments instead to fill black holes in their balance sheets.

That meant a second hit to the property market after the crash as even those in steady jobs wanting to buy a house couldn’t raise the money to complete.

According to the National Institute of Statistics, the number of mortgages granted rose 23.8 per cent in August compared to the same month in 2013, making it the third consecutive quarter of double digit rises.

Only two regions saw fewer home mortgages in August than in the same month of 2013 – La Rioja (down 40.9 per cent) and the Canary Islands (down 15.5 per cent).

Everywhere else in the country saw postitve annual rates, led by the Balearics with a massive 83.4 per cent rise.

Caterham F1 driver takes pole for PH Mallorca at first Palma Port Kart Cup A STREET circuit karting race conceived in Monaco had its debut in Spain recently.

Moll Vell marina in Mallorca was transformed into an 880-metre street circuit for the inaugural Palma Port Kart Cup. Team PH Mallorca, with two karts entered,

including one piloted by future F1 star Roberto Merhi, took pole position and a third-place finish in the three-hour endurance race as well as an impressive first place in the one-hour feature race.

Alec Dudfield from property developers, PH Mallorca, said: “Sponsored

by Red Bull and conceived in Monaco, this foundational Palma Port Kart Cup had all the ingredients for success, so we pulled out the stops to field two great teams. In Kart 17 we had 23-year-old Roberto Merhi, an upcoming F1 star from Castellon who raced in FP1 for Caterham at Monza, Suzuki and Sochi this season, alongside Riccardo

Golfers struggle in sun VILLARICOS Golf Society played a singles stableford competition at their home course of Aguilon.

The weather was just perfect for golf and the condition of the course was excellent as always.

However, members struggled to get the points.

In division one the top three players all tied on 31 points, so it went to count back.

The winner was Mike Oulton, in second place was John Winestanley and third was Mick Gardner.

Division two was won

by David Ward with 33 points (he is now promoted to division one), in second with 28 points was Gordon Hayes and in third was Tony Barker with 24 points.

THE Turre Mixed Rinks Open was held at Cabrera Lawn Bowling Club on Sunday November 2.

All the bowling clubs in the area entered teams and the competition was played on a round robin basis in two groups.

Each round was seven ends and had to be played in one hour.

There was some lovely

bowling and the top of each group changed constantly after each round.

After the final round it was only shot difference that separated the winners of each group.

Almeria Bowling Club took the plaudits by winning both groups and contested the final, in which a team of Colin Wright, John Fitzgerald, Chris Ewer and Christine Fitzpatrick, played Sheila Allen, Sylvia Pritchard, Tom Mullen and Reg Birmingham.

Reg’s team started the better winning the first two ends but Colin’s team fought back well to win the final 10 - 3.

Grand golf at Cortijo THERE was another good turnout for Cortijo Grande’s Sunday stableford.
