Bring back the postie DEMONSTRATIONS have been held following the withdrawal of home postal deliveries in five Orihuela Costa urbanisations. Councillor for the Coast Martina Scheurer was joined by acting Mayor of Orihuela Antonio Zapata at the protest in front of the Playa Flamenca Post Office.

Thousands of homes are now cut off from home deliveries with owners having to make the trip to the post office in Playa Flamenca to collect mail before it is returned to the central sorting office. Bob Houliston from CLARO said it was a difficult and intolerable

situation for many, adding: “For those who are not mobile it is a serious problem. For those who are frequently away from their homes, the situation is extremely worrying since the fate of their mail will be totally unknown. “We all rely on the post to receive personal mail, bank statements and bills

as well as official communications from the Spanish authorities. The job of the post office is to ensure the delivery of such mail.” The decision to stop home deliveries was made in Madrid, based on the grounds that there was a population density of less than 25 inhabitants per hectare, as the area is divided into smaller urbanisations. An appeal against the decision has been lodged on the grounds that Orihuela Costa as a whole has 35,000 registered residents.

More cash for beaches pledge THE Government is committed to the beaches of the Valencia Region. That’s the message from Serafin Castilian, who announced further investments are planned. Through the Department of Sustainability, almost €950,000 is being earmarked this year for the conservation and maintenance of the Alicante coastline. Castilian said the investments reflected “The government’s commitment to the environmental quality of the beaches of Valencia,” adding that besides improving the coastline all these initiatives “have an impact on tourism and therefore on the economy of Valencia.” Money is to be spent on dune restoration at the beaches of Carabassi and Arenales del Sol in the municipality of Elche and El Moncayo in Guardamar as well as the recovery of archaeological structures from the Roman period along the beach of Albufereta, Alicante. The news comes a week after our front page story highlighted how investment in the province’s beaches had dropped from €20.8 million in 2007 to the €355,000 spent this year; a decline of over 90 per cent in seven years.

Camposol clean up after heavy rain storm THE clean up is under way in Camposol, Mazarron, after heavy rain hit the urbanisation. Sector D was the worst hit in an area that runs across the main

stream at the foot of inclining terrain. It has previously been reported and alleged that the properties were illegal and the builders should not have filled in

the natural stream as they are natural channels that allow surplus water to flow away. As the stream burst its banks the mass flow of water took out

power, walls, street signs, cars and demolished gardens. The town hall worked through the night helping the clean up operation.

Emergency action at airport EMERGENCY protocols were activated at Alicante-Elche airport. Several fire engines and six ambulances waited on the tarmac after the pilot of an Aer Lingus Airbus 320 from Dublin warned the control tower that smoke had been detected inside the cabin. Hospitals in the area were also warned to prepare for

the possible arrival of passengers needing emergency treatment. However, the plane was able to land safely and on time with passengers able to leave the aircraft in the normal way as the emergency services began to withdraw from the scene. Three women later recounted that after the lights suddenly

went out half-an-hour before landing, flashing ‘exit’ signs came on. Some passengers reported smelling smoke while others insisted they saw smoke in the roof of the plane. “It was terrifying because noone told us anything,” said one passenger. Flowers for the lady HUNDREDS of thousands of people will be descending on the city of Zaragoza for the Our Lady of the Pillar (Nuestra Señora del Pilar) festival offering of flowers. Many will be dressed in the traditional costume of Aragon and will bring flowers to the Virgin statue in a relatively modern ‘tradition’ which has become one of the biggest religious gatherings in Spain. The record number of people to turn up for the event, where the flowers are piled up into a pyramid structure to form a flower mantle around the Virgin statue, is 450,000. The right thing to do is fight IS

HE UK Parliament has done the right thing in the fight against IS Islamic fighters. Sending in the RAF to help in the fight against extremism is the least the government can do. The IS, in both Syria and Iraq, has shown itself to be utterly ruthless with a total disregard for the lives of people who get in their way. And we need to be clear about this, it is not just people of other religions they are killing and driving from their homes, it is fellow Muslims too. Their religious war is not about spreading the word of Islam, as they may want to make some people think, it is about enforcing their own particularly bloodthirsty interpretation. Not for them persuasion; they take the route of oppression. It speaks volumes that Iran, not noted for its tolerance, is one of the

main opponents of IS in the region. Iran has supplied guns and ammunition to forces opposed to IS, and also sent in rocket launchers. So an unofficial and unlikely alliance is now forming against the IS threat. A NATO-based coalition in the air, and Iran on the ground. Unfortunately, there seem to be too many disaffected youth radicalised in Western countries, from Spain to France and the UK, willing to join in the bloodshed, the most infamous of whom is Jihadi John, who has so cruelly beheaded three hostages on video. So yes, send in the air force, but also think about those who have joined in the fight for IS. It should be made absolutely clear there is no room back home, whether in the UK, Spain or any other country, for anyone who has joined the organisation.

Military in mock flood rescue op MORE than 300 people participated in a display coordinated by the Emergency Military Unit to learn how to deal with rescuing people trapped by floods. Just days after rains hit the area, the level two emergency protocol took place between Rojales and Guardamar. The mock rescue had a synopsis not dissimilar to an action movie; the river Segura had flooded and overflowed, drawing pedestrians and vehicles in to the path of the water. It was a race against time to rescue

CABO ROIG: Water pipe replacement continues.

Water works in Cabo Roig WORK has resumed on improving and renovating the sewage system in Cabo Roig. With an investment of â&#x201A;Ź344,000, the work was first started by water company Hidraqua in June, but was halted during the summer months to avoid disruption to tourists. Old pipes, made of concrete and some of which are 40 years old, are being replaced along with old sewer connections, many of which were put in place before the construction of private homes. Many of the old pipes run across private land under homes which makes it difficult to repair breakages.

2nd Ebola death THE second Spanish priest to contract the Ebola virus has died in a Madrid hospital, according to Spanish news agency Efe. The 69-year-old medically-trained priest Manuel Garcia Viejo, was admitted to Madrid’s Carlos III hospital on Monday September 22, where he underwent treatment for the disease which he contracted whilst working in the Hospital Order of San Juan de Dios in western Sierra Leone. In August, Miguel Pajares also succumbed to the illness which has ravaged West Africa.

Graffiti contest is a big draw

HUERCAL OVERA gathered a dozen graffiti artists in the town square for a competition. The artists travelled from all over Spain for the event, hosted by the town hall. The art was completed under the watchful eyes of the town’s residents and visitors, hundreds of which came to see the works coming to life. Mayor of Huercal Overa, Domingo Fernandez, emphasised the high quality of the painting and spoke of the “great atmosphere that we have had all day.” He went on to thank the attendees for their participation. Two police officers injured in hand grenade explosion TWO National Police bomb squad officers sustained serious injuries to their hands in an explosion. The policemen were hurt whilst dealing with a hand grenade that had been confiscated at a street market in Sevilla, said a police spokesman. The explosion occurred at the headquarters of the bomb squad of the National Police (Tedax) in Cortijo Del Cuarto outside Sevilla, while the officers were handling a Spanish Civil War grenade found at a street market on Calle Feria. They were rushed to the Hospital Virgen del Rocio and it appears one of

them will have to have his hand amputated. The extent of the injuries suffered by the other officer remains to be determined. This is not the first time law enforcement officials have found explosive devices from the Civil War. Back in July, the Guardia Civil in Aragon defused a mortar grenade that had been stuck in a pine tree for 70 years. Its deadly load was still intact. According to police sources, the grenade was high up in the tree and had gone unnoticed for the last seven decades. It is assumed that the grenade missed its target

and became stuck in the tree. Tedax has so far defused 111 explosive devices in Aragon. Most of them were artillery shells weighing between four and 45 kilograms. However, they have also disarmed hand grenades and four aerial bombs, with the last one being found in June 2013 in a pond in Teruel. It weighed 50 kilograms and had to be removed with the help of expert divers. Old explosive devices are extremely unpredictable because they have been out in the open for so long, said Tedax experts.

THE No Means No campaign launched by the Euro Weekly News (EWN) has been given the thumbs-up by singer Mica Paris. As a crusader herself who does huge amounts of work for charity, she happily agreed to support the EWN campaign ‘No Means No,’ a movement against the abuse of women and the promotion of equality for women in a message that means: ‘When I say no, it really means no.’ She took the time to speak to EWN’s Anna Tildesley about her life and work…

IVACIOUS, bubbly and caring were the three words which immediately came to mind, when interviewing Mica Paris last night before her appearance at Old Joys Pub in Puerto Banus. Regardless of the sweltering heat and usual pre-show chaos, when there was a chance to sit with her for 10 minutes, it was like we were in a room on our own having a girlie chat. A legend in her own right,

“I really think women need all the help and encouragement they can get. We are under attack.” Mica Paris is not ‘just a singer’ as she puts it; in fact, she said: “If I was just a singer, it would drive me mad.” She is also a presenter, roving reporter and a regular fill-in host on ITV’s This Morning. And if that wasn’t enough to be getting on with, her spare time is dedicated to two charities. The legendary soul singer is the ambassador for the Amy Winehouse Trust, and the patron of the charity KIN (Kibera in Need). Mica travels to Kenya once a year to support the families in the Kibera slum and by the look on her face as she describes walking through the poverty-stricken area, it’s a very challenging and heartwrenching experience. “You gag as you walk through. I was ill for four days the last time I came back, but we have to help them,” she explained, adding: “I’m lucky, and I want people to realise

how spoilt we all are, it’s a reality check on life. “We worry about what our hair looks like or what necklace to wear, but when you go to these places, you realise that our worries are nothing compared to what these children live with.” Mica’s children also help out with the charity work and although it is too dangerous for them to go to the Kibera slums, she tells me that they do a lot of charity work around her home town of London. Fascinated by how this beautiful, 5ft 11” tall woman can look so amazing at 45 and knowing articles written about her yo-yo dieting and helterskelter weight fluctuations, when I asked her to divulge her secret of a balanced healthy lifestyle, surprisingly she didn’t talk about personal trainers, chia seeds or yoga classes. Instead she said: “It’s simple: one litre of water a day, vegetables, protein and a gym session three times a week,” and by the look on her face, when Alex looked over, a gorgeous boyfriend seems to help! Mica is embarking on two new albums to be released later this year. She is collaborating on the new Freemasons album and working with Rod Temperton, the songwriter famous for writing the historic No 1 hit for Michael Jackson, ‘Thriller.’

Bollywood in Alicante BOLLYWOOD arrived in Alicante as the city was the location for filming scenes for a new movie. The first scenes were shot outside the city’s Principal Theatre where the production team and actors aroused curiosity of passers-by in the area. Catalan banks ready to move CATALONIA’S two biggest banks would, if necessary, move their head offices from the region. The intentions of CaixaBank and Banco Sabadell in the event of regional independence from Spain were revealed in a report by the Swiss investment Bank, UBS. It corroborated sources close to both banks which also claimed that they have already informed international investors of their intentions. Secession seems ‘a distant prospect’ for Catalonia, wrote UBS’s chief strategist Justin Knight in the run-up to Scotland’s independence referendum on September 18. HE main downside risk for Sterling recently was the uncertainty of the Scottish referendum. The ‘No vote’ on September 18 removed the huge political and economic uncertainty of the 307-year-old union. The news was greeted with euphoria by the markets as the pound rallied in the aftermath. Investors are now weighing the long term ramifications of the event. Although the Kingdom has remained united, some investors fear that the fissures opened up by the Scottish referendum may take a long time to heal, and the debate over devolution within the UK is now an open question. In the meantime, growth in the UK has slowed from its peak in the first half of 2014 and the Bank of England might not be too keen to raise interest rates as early as the market wants. The famous promise in the summer of 2012 by European Central Bank President Mario Draghi to do “whatever it

wrong as prices continue falling month after month. It’s now clear that the easing of market panic after Draghi’s 2012 promise induced too much complacency. The risks are now so serious the ECB has no other choice than to act on interest rates as they preannounced at September’s meeting. By cutting interest and announcing ABS purchases, the central bank sent a very strong message to the market. Interest rates were cut to fresh record lows, and Draghi’s Central European Bank will also try to boost credit conditions further by purchasing asset-backed securities and covered bonds. Over the next three years the market will be flooded with around €500 billion. This wall of money heading towards the financial market caught investors by surprise. And while some detractors say it’s too late, this amount of stimulus from the European Central Bank will certainly be welcome.

A bulky savings account can get a person out of all sorts of financial problems; because no matter how hard we try to budget and stick to that budget, unforeseen costs always pop up. The car breaks down, an uninsured mobile phone is stolen, a fine arrives at the doorstep from traffic control or suddenly the bathroom toilet decides to go on the

A simple piggy bank may not look like much on the kitchen counter top, but by adding your loose change every day - you’ll be surprised how it adds up. If a gourmet palate is leaving you strapped for cash each month then I’m afraid it’s time to downgrade to a cheaper supermarket. And while on the subject of food, never go shopping on an empty stomach. It’s hazardous for your wallet. Finally, leave the car at home and walk or use public transport. And cut up those credit cards. If you don’t have the money in cash, then you can’t buy it! Simple.

Tunnel vision of doctors can hurt the ill I DO not know all the facts but I think that Frank McDonnell MD (whatever that stands for) is jumping to conclusions when he assumes that Ashya King’s parents probably removed him from hospital to avoid blood transfusions and opted for “alternative” (his quotation marks, not mine) treatment. Firstly, although I did read just once that Mr and Mrs King were Jehovah’s Witnesses, nowhere was it ever suggested that they used their religious beliefs to deny their son treatment. In fact even the hospital made it clear that there had been no objection to treatment on these grounds. Secondly, proton beam treatment is not ‘alternative’ but another form of cancer therapy not available on the NHS or in the UK. It is more likely the doctor in question was convinced of the accuracy of his own diagnosis and worried that another hospital might prove him wrong. Many years ago my then 13year-old son was very ill in Northwick Park Hospital in London. The paediatric gastroenterologist there was so convinced my son was coeliac that he performed an endoscopy without any sedative - three times, because he couldn’t get the test results he expected. When we wrapped our frail son in a blanket and took him out of that hospital we were told not to bring him back and all his medical notes were ‘lost.’ At St Bartholomew’s Hospital he was correctly diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease and was soon into remission. why did they have to come to Spain? They have family here so why did they not ask them to sell the house? I understand they allegedly told a reporter they wanted to obtain as much publicity as they could get? Is that protecting a very sick boy? Or did they see pound signs when the news broke? I can tell you right now that I hope the boy survives and my heart goes out to him. I do know what it is like to move heaven and earth for a terminally-ill child. My sister had a beautiful little girl who went to America with the help of the NHS for treatment. However, the treatment did not work and seven months and two weeks before her 10th birthday she gave up the fight, so I do know how it feels to have a very sick child. Firstly there is no such thing as a ‘strict JW’ as all Jehovah’s Witnesses are united in their rejection of blood transfusions. Secondly blood transfusions were never an issue as regards the treatment! Ashya was under hospital treatment but he was not removed to avoid blood transfusion but to obtain alternative treatment, one denied by the UK. Thirdly being made a ward of court is a rare event in the UK in these circumstances. Legislation continues to be interpreted in different ways so there needs to be a consideration of many factors for a more holistic approach.

Fourthly, to state that treatment in the UK is the only hope for the child is completely ridiculous and assumes there is no other sophisticated treatment available that respects the wishes of the parents. Why Frank McDonnell thinks that the wishes of the state should over-ride the wishes of the parent in any event is not stated. Subsequent developments have shown that in fact the U.K authorities were heavy-handed and it is simply not correct to imply the parents were in any way negligent. G C Hall (by email)

I WOULD love to know why over the last two months, the benchmark cost of oil has fallen from approximately $110 to $96 - a drop of around 12 per cent, whereas the euro has weakened from about $1.38 to roughly $1.30, a drop of 6 per cent. Pump prices in Spain should have dropped by 5 per cent at least but they haven’t changed at all. I have always found Spanish pump prices to change quickly. Are we again being ripped off, either by government or petrol companies, or is there a sensible answer? I can’t be the only one to ask since the discrepancy should be obvious to anyone. Uncaring doctor is a disgrace

OTHERS THINK IT

HY is it that almost every time there is a scandal concerning UK doctors, the offending practitioner has an almost unpronounceable name? This latest incident where a local GP refused to treat an elderly lady who fell down just outside his practice is no exception. Christopher Uwagboe failed to attend to the poor 88-yearold woman because - wait for it - he was ‘not first aid trained’. Did you ever hear such pure unadulterated poppycock in your whole life? How can a doctor, who presumably goes through years of medical education, not be familiar with a procedure practised by the Boy Scouts? Did he somehow do a Miliband and miss a bit? Well, whatever the reason, his decision to remain ensconced in his surgery,

hiding behind what also appeared to be an extremely rude and equally uncaring receptionist, is a disgrace. Let us just hope that his patients are so disgusted they give his surgery a wide berth in the future and hit this incompetent right where it hurts, in his no doubt, well stuffed pockets. Did anyone stay awake all the way through Ed Miliband’s diatribe at the Labour Party Conference? What an intelligence-insulting load of bull. How anyone in their right mind could want to elect the likes of him and Balls is quite beyond me. These people are the same individuals who left the country bankrupt. One even left a note for his successor informing him that there was no money left to work with! One thing that did strike me during his ill-fated oration was the amount of times he used the word ‘friends’. Substitute

Get ready for the Costa’s cook off COOKING it up in time for the Homes, Gardens and Lifestyle Show are three local celebrity chefs who are taking part in The Costa’s Cook Off event taking place at this year’s exhibition on October 15-16. Liberty Seguros and RACE new road safety campaign for pensioners

MANY accidents occur on urban roads, and in many cases, pedestrians are the victims. According to the DGT, 33 per cent of pedestrians killed on urban roads were over the age of 65. For this reason, Liberty Seguros, together with RACE (Royal Automobile Club of Spain) are conducting an awareness campaign in Spain, under the name of ‘Senior Mobility, the way forward’ aimed at older people in order to reduce the number of these accidents. This is to raise awareness for the over 65-year-old population for safer mobility with useful tips and recommendations. The project will cover the Spanish geography and actions will be developed in the cities of Granada, Alicante, Salamanca and Santiago de Compostela, amongst others. The awareness campaign will be based primarily on a ‘road show’ that will feature a mobile information room and training on road safety, especially for those over 65, as well as on other aspects that can affect ones safety, like the importance of healthy

TOP 10 WEIRDEST UFO SIGHTINGS Are we alone in the universe? Is Earth the only life-sustaining planet in the universe? Have we been visited by creatures from other planets? Maybe, maybe not. Either way, thinking about it is just mindboggling. Here is a list of some of the world’s weirdest UFO sightings. 1. Battle of Los Angeles - 1942 Back in February 1942, America was slowly recovering from the surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour which had occurred in December 1941. Many feared the Japanese would attack the Continental United States so when an unidentified flying object was seen hovering over Los Angeles by hundreds of people there was widespread panic. The army got involved and planes were deployed to shoot at the UFO. 2. Kecksburg, Pennsylvania - 1965 A fiery ball was seen shooting across the sky in Kecksburg, Pennsylvania in December 1965, shortly before it crashed into the woods. The military and the police roped off the area to keep curious onlookers at bay, but that did not prevent them from seeing a large object being taken away on a flatbed truck. 3. Colares - 1977 Several UFOs were spotted over the Brazilian island of Colares in 1977. There were 400 witnesses, some of whom claimed to have been attacked by light beams which left burns on their bodies. A witness said the beams were about seven or eight centimetres in diameter and white in colour and that they felt almost as hot as a cigarette burn. 4. Japan Air - 1986 Japan Airlines Flight 1628 was carrying a large shipment of wine between Paris and Tokyo in November of 1986. When it was over Alaska, the crew and some of the passengers saw a bright flying

1. Resist doing the major annual garden cut back in the autumn. The cut back is best done during the months of January and February. 2. Throughout the autumn aim to prolong the flowering of perennials and shrubs by continuously deadheading as soon as flowers die and the cutting back of unsightly branches to stimulate new shoots. 3. Stimulate the early flowering of shrubs and trees that often do not flower until early to mid January. 4. If your garden is not already fully planted plant up some of the shrubs and trees we list below during October and November.

5. Purchase a selection of plants in flower just before Christmas. Some plants that can be in flower at Christmas: The strawberry tree (arbutus unedo) which also has bright red fruits to brighten a corner of the garden. The galan de noche that might be persuaded to pump out its heavy perfume on Christmas Eve. Of the early flowering trees the delebeta and bon accuel varieties of mimosa are spectacular. Shrubs Lantanas are reliable in most gardens and also hibiscus in warmer spots. Likewise roses if they have been deadheaded, watered and fed during the autumn. Poinsettias can replace a garden Christmas tree. Climbing shrubs. Bougainvilleas, bignonias, solanums and perfumed jasmines for spectacular displays. Perennials The frutescens and coronarium chrysanthemums and euryops daisy give reliable colour in many gardens. A few margeritas may still be in flower. Succulents Several succulents can come into flower around Christmas and various varieties of Christmas cacti. Winter annuals The most reliable for colourful displays are the seasonal pansies, busy lizzies, stocks, wallflowers and also petunias which are now available almost all the year round. PROPERTY sales in Spain increased by 12.1 per cent in the second quarter of the year. According to the Ministry of Development, sales went up 12.1 per cent compared to the same term in 2010 and sales amounted to 91,338 transactions. Second-hand property purchases and sales held an 84.3 per cent of the market between April and June whereas new houses held only a 15.7 per cent of the market (14,296). The majority of the transactions were registered in Madrid with 6,705 transactions, followed by Barcelona (3,395), Valencia (1,633), Sevilla (1,293), Zaragoza

Alicante has taken a lead position with 3,993 houses sold to foreigners between April and June, followed by Malaga (2,222) and Barcelona (1,317). In addition, foreigners who do not live in Spain bought 1,202 houses which represent an increase of 13.7 per cent compared to the previous year. However, when it comes to considering the market as a whole, the downward trend is still clear. Between July 2013 and June 2014 the number of transactions amounted to 37,115 houses, 2.6 per cent less than the previous period.

The day started off with a rain storm apparently circling around but just when the players thought they had got away with it, the heavens opened. However it didn’t last long and the sun came back out and all was well. In the gold Category winner was B Mcshane (35 points) on countback from G Benson. Best front nine was scored by A Rich (19) and best back nine score was by S Hamilton. In the Silver Category H Hunter (34) was first with D Bishop (33) second. Best front nine was scored by B Wright (16) and best back nine was shot by G Butterworth (18).

MotoDes champs

TEAM CRT Racing’s David Slader has been crowned a champion after their latest race despite a bad dose of the flu. There was a good turnout at the Copa de España de Velocidad motorcycle race in Valencia. Team CRT Racing turned up with their main rider David Slader on top of the MotoDes championship needing just a top 10 finish to win the championship. The weather did not help as all weekend there were on and off showers which made for a lot of work for the team in changing the set-up of their bike from rain to dry.

On Sunday morning, David came down with the flu and the team decided not to go out for the warm-up. That meant David, who was attended to by doctors on the race track to stop his vomiting, was able to rest until the start. The race turned out to be hard for the team rider but he managed to hold on and take a well-deserved second place, the other rider of the team Ruben Ros came third in both the race and the MotoDes championship. Hard fought win for Monte MONTESINOS opening home game of the season saw a hard fought win which should have been a comprehensive victory had they taken their chances. The early stages of the match saw both sides playing good passing football and the crowd of 277 were encouraged by Montes’ Carlos who was giving the Murada defence headaches with his pace. Monte were determined to put the Murada hoodoo behind them and Rubio had a golden opportunity to score but the keeper made a great stop. With the home side rampant there were chances for Carlos, Omar and M&A and a 35 yard blaster from Marcos which struck the bar. A change at half time saw Edu on for Omar, but Murada started the second period brighter. Winning swimmers THREE of Club Natacion Torrevieja’s swimmers got the season off to a blast. After training hard in the sea all summer rewards were forthcoming in the First Traversia a Nado Marina d’Or, organised by Olympic swimmer Kiko Hervas. On Saturday September 27 swimmers

from across Spain came together to compete in two races, the 9.5km swim and the 4km swim. Vicki Connolly and daughter Zoe Connolly raced alongside companion Beth Alterbas in the 4km swim to celebrate Beth’s 70th birthday. All three Torrevieja swimmers battled on in the hardest swim they had ever encountered. Zoe, aged 13, excelled herself as the youngest swimmer in the competition winning 25th place overall and 10th in the under 25 years.
