Festival helps the hungry THE second Festival Caliope was held in Parque de los Pueblos de America in Motril last weekend. Entrance was free but visitors were asked to bring food which was donated to the Jesus Abandonado soup kitchen.
Art exhibition CENTRO CIVICO in La Herradura is hosting a painting exhibition by Pepa Cortes and Jordi Poquet until Tuesday next week. It features 50 oil paintings depicting Andalucian landscapes. It is open every day from 5pm until 10pm.

Save local beaches call TORROX Council has called for a comprehensive plan to stabilise beaches that are constantly affected by storms. The council is to ask the General Coasts Department of Spain’s Central Government to formulate and execute a plan to protect and improve the beaches that are the lifeblood of the tourism industry. Playa El Peñoncillo and El Morche were greatly damaged before and during the summer. This drew complaints from beachgoers, but the
council decided to wait until after the height of the summer before taking
action so as not to damage the image of the municipality as a tourist
Costa’s best summer ever HOTELS along the Costa del Sol have had the best summer since tourism records began, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE). During the months of July and August, 4.9 million overnight stays were recorded in the hotels along the Costa, up 2.2 per cent. Whilst prices remain more or less at the level they were in 2008, utility bills have shot up. A typical hotel will have
seen a 70 per cent increase in its energy bills in the last four years. All too often hotels lose money during the winter months and spend the summer desperately trying to make a profit. Many in the sector will be hoping to prolong the season as much as possible in order to maximise profits. September bookings have been positive and hoteliers have high hopes for October, too.
