Bring back lifeguards A POLITICAL storm has blown up after lifeguards were reportedly withdrawn from the beaches at the end of August. PSOE Councillor Censi Ruiz criticised the fact that Civil Protection lifeguards had disappeared from Almuñecar and La Herradura beaches on September 1 and that the warning flags had been removed. Ruiz said the situation was not normal and was dangerous, adding that summer in the two seaside towns did not end on September 1. She said: “We do not know why, but, overnight, the local government has left the beaches without security. This is a clear example of recklessness and implies a lack of foresight detrimental to tourism in Almuñecar and

Ruiz also asked why there were no rubbishcollection boats along the coast to clear it of jellyfish and surface scum. “I cannot believe Almuñecar and La Herradura do not have at least two skiffs clearing the area of jellyfish and scum during the summer. This is extremely detrimental to the reputation of the town as a tourist area,” she complained. According to her, a large number of beachgoers and local residents have complained about the presence of surface scum, especially in La Herradura and San Cristobal. “The local PP government does not have a strategic plan to manage Almuñecar and La Herradura beaches,” she claimed.
