Power of the people leads to Ashya reunion PEOPLE power has led to cancer-stricken Ashya King, aged five, being reunited with his parents. English prosecutors decided to drop the case against Brett and Naghemeh King after more than 160,000 people signed an online petition demanding the release of the couple, who were being held for an extradition hearing. Prosecutors were left scrambling to get in touch with the Spanish authorities to secure the couple’s release after the public outcry. On Tuesday evening, the couple were finally released and travelled to Malaga for a reunion with Ashya yesterday (Wednesday). In their first press meeting after they were released from prison on the orders of a judge in Madrid, the Kings spoke about their ordeal. Brett said he would happily spend years in

jail to stop the NHS treating his son, because in his words, ‘its doctors are going to kill him or turn him into a vegetable’. Brett said he and his wife Naghemeh were being hunted across Europe by police as if they were terrorists, and that staff at the Southampton hospital knew he would take his son abroad. Almost breaking down

in tears, he told the press that they were desperate to see Ashya because ‘he hasn’t got too many months to live’. He added: “When we were in prison there wasn’t a minute that went by without our hearts hurting to see Ashya. My wife spent most of the time crying in the cell. “I was going to ask to move cells because I

was worried and I couldn’t listen to my wife crying. When you are locked up you can’t do anything.” An international hunt

was launched when the boy, who suffers from a brain tumour, was taken from a UK hospital. This thrust the Axarquia into the world’s spotlight after Ashya’s parents were arrested at a Benjarafe hostel on Saturday. They were separated from Ashya, who was taken to hospital. His parents had posted a YouTube video asking for the hunt to be called off and explaining their actions. In it, Brett said that they were not withdrawing treatment from their son, but rather wanted to seek an alternative therapy not available in the UK.
