Feria fun continues until Saturday night

HALFWAY through the feria in Almeria City and already it has proved extremely popular with residents and visitors.

This year sees a double celebration for Almeria, not only for the feria in honour of the patron saint of the city, Virgen del Mar, but also as the city celebrates its 1,000th birthday.

The fair, the largest of its kind in the province and with a budget of €700,000, was officially opened at Puerta Purchena on Saturday by Francisco Rodriguez Vilchez, Head Coach from UD Almeria football team.

Francisco grew up in the Zapillo neighbourhood, so the area is very close to his heart.

At 10pm, the lights adorning the main gate of the fairground were switched on, signalling the official beginning of the proceedings and welcoming the crowds to an event eagerly awaited for months.

There was also the fourth annual edition of the Paseos de Caballos, when more than 100 horses carried their riders in traditional dress throughout the streets of the capital.

Another famous face appeared in Almeria on Monday as Manuel Sanchez, the winner of Spain’s Masterchef 2013, hosted a gastronomy competition. Manuel, a

resident of Albox, is a real favourite with the crowds since he took first place in the popular TV show.

In the evening feet were stamping in time with the Flamenco festival, this year in honour of the great Paco de Lucia.

Bullfights began on yesterday (Wednesday), continuing until Friday, with bullfighters including Juan del Alamo, and El Juli appearing at the bullring.

At night, though, the city really came into its own. There was live music with performances every

night, everything from Rock to Flamenco.

There is still time to visit the feria. Something is happening from early until late, and a huge fireworks’ display on Saturday night will mark the end of the festivities for another year.

ABANDONED: Immigrants fled after landing.

30 immigrants land and escape

AT least 30 immigrants landed on Balerma beach in the town of El Ejido this week, but fled the scene before they could be met by police officers.

Several witnesses at the scene saw the ‘patera’ land earlier this week and notified the Guardia Civil immediately. However, by the time the police arrived the 30 or so immigrants had disappeared.

A number of special divisions of the Guardia Civil and the Local Police in El Ejido

are currently searching the local area for the 30 immigrants who landed at dusk on Monday in order to check they are in good health and to process them according to Spanish legislation.

The landing of the patera is the latest in a spate of landings over recent weeks including 23 immigrants of sub-Saharan origin, including a toddler and a pregnant woman, who were intercepted earlier in the week south west of Alboran island.

House fire EMERGENCY services in Roquetas rescued a woman and two children aged six and nine from a fire in a flat in Roquetas de Mar. The residents were unhurt.

Security issues during feria AGENTS from the Local Police in Almeria City have revealed that another year has passed with security issues during the feria due to low police staffing numbers.

The situation was reported this week by the union for Local Police and Almeria fire service (UPLBA). The union described the system as “impaired” and

explained that recently more than 45 municipal agents have retired with many others reaching the age for secondary activity.

The union blamed the chief of police for providing so much cover for events during the feria that other areas were depleted.

“This means risk to citizens and the police themselves,” UPLBA.

Police officers said that the lack of police was apparent earlier this week when a young driver crashed in the city centre.

They said they did not have enough cover to organise a Breathalyser test.

They also stated that only four officers were on duty for the entire city centre on Sunday.

Spain’s oldest Bull Run in Cuellar

HE last week in August marks the beginning of Spain’s oldest Bull Run. The Encierros de Cuellar (Cuellar bull runs) in Segovia, date back to before 1215 when there was an argument raging between the Catholic Church and its bishops in the area. The bishops wanted to attend the bull fighting festivities, which took place on the outskirts of the town, but the Church considered it ‘undignified’ and so their attendance was banned.

Africans rescued MARITIME RESCUE in Almeria has released details of a group of African immigrants who arrived in Almeria this week.

The 23 occupants of the boat included two women, one of whom was pregnant, and a toddler.

They reached the port safely and are reported to be in good health.

Maritime Rescue assisted the patera when it was spotted nine miles south west of the island of Alboran on Monday afternoon.

Guardia Civil release Dreambeach figures DREAMBEACH figures have been released by the Guardia Civil detailing their efforts to ensure a smooth event.

ALMERIA City Council has approved the second phase of works for the renovation of the town hall and surrounding areas with an estimated budget of €6,320,000.

Planned work is to include the structural repair and all the facades of the Plaza Vieja, the

Drugs raid

OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil have arrested a 37-yearold resident of Adra on suspicion of a crime against public health.

The officers began an investigation in Adra after learning of the potential presence of marihuana in a house in the town. They eventually located a terrace close to one of the town’s churches, noticing a strong characteristic odour, and discovered 38 marihuana plants on the property’s terrace.

The plants were in varying stages of growth and the officers also discovered a large quantity of pesticides specifically used for marihuana cultivation, magazines about the subject and approximately €1,000 in cash. The 38 plants had a net weight of more than four kilos.

Coloraos honoured in annual march EVERY August 24 Almeria City honours the Coloraos in a march through the city streets.

This simple act commemorates the death of 20 liberals who were shot in the capital in 1812. They lost their lives to a hail of bullets on Rambla de Belen, on the

road to Granada. The charge was insurrection. They arrived to proclaim freedom against the despotism of Fernando VII. This year the event was remembered during a march which was well attended despite the activities of the feria. A monument was built at the Purchena gate between 1868 and 1900, but was later moved to Plaza Vieja.

It was destroyed in 1943 but rebuilt in 1988 in its current location of Plaza RESIDENTS of Calle Jose Ojeda in Roquetas de Mar Constitucion where it have grouped together to bring a formal noise remains.

Murdered journalist never to be forgotten THERE is a black ribbon on the front of the Euro Weekly News today.

There is another at the top of the page that has been left blank for the journalist James Foley.

His family and friends are in mourning because he was murdered in Syria by an IS jihadist with a London accent. He was a hostage killed in cold blood because he was an American, because he had a brother in the US air force, but he was also slaughtered because he was a journalist.

So the Euro Weekly News is in mourning, too, for James Foley and is donating a page in his memory. We now ask the world media to come together and follow suit by donating the cost of a full page in their respective newspapers.

James Foley risked his life by going to Syria and was taken hostage while

doing his job. Fanatics and oppressors fear journalists because swords kill, but the words they write and speak outlive them. Once those words have been absorbed, there is no effective way to erase them from the mind of a reader, a listener, a viewer.

It is hoped to use the money that is raised to fund a ‘James Foley Scholarship’ to assist young journalists who are taking their first steps in the profession.

Hope for helping little Angela YOUNG couple Carlos and Teresa are coping with something that most of us couldn’t bear.

Their baby daughter, Angela, is diagnosed with Niemann-Pick disease, one of a group of lysosomal storage diseases that affect metabolism caused by genetic mutations. Angela suffers with type C, the most aggressive form of the disease.

There have been just 15 cases in Spain, 13 of which died before the children reached the age of five. However, number 14, a girl who lives in Murcia, has given Carlos and Teresa a little hope.

Her mother has managed to source an experimental drug from the United States, but which is not recognised in Spain, ciclodestrina. The five-year-old girl also has oxygen therapy. She is still classified as critical, but is able to go to school in her wheelchair.

ANGELA: Has Niemann-Pick disease.

Carlos and Teresa are trying to raise money to pay for palliative treatments and one of these efforts is to raffle a television. They have also opened a special bank account for contributions (0182 5500 60 0201627396). Carlos and Teresa are both unemployed, so are struggling financially.

Andalucian party unhappy about female firefighter THE Andalucian party have spoken out regarding the recent hire of a female firefighter in Albox.

They issued a statement which reported that hiring this person violated all the rules on access to public service positions. “They have ridden roughshod over all legislation, starting with Article 55 of the Basic Statute of Public Employees that specifies that access is governed by the constitutional principles of equality, merit and ability with advertising of positions and transparency.

In this they have failed.” They continued:

“The emergency management act of Andalucia Article 39 clearly states that all members of the fire service should be civil servants.” They also referenced Article 40 with regard to internal promotion. They added: “They have failed in all of this and have done it to strut and be an exclusive municipality with a female firefighter.”

The Andalucian Party explained that they had no issue with whether the new firefighter was male or female, only that the laws in force were respected and to have the best professionals in the community.

The contest is launched with one goal: to honour the elderly, showing in a single photograph the physical signs of aging.

Representative for social welfare, gender and family, Almudena Valentin, explained that the photographs must conform to the theme and concentrate on hands, lips and eyes.

Each photograph must make identification of the person impossible.

It must be at least 1280x1024 pixels and not exceed three megabytes.

A maximum of five photographs per entrant is permitted.

Bonilla accused of ‘hidden meetings’ GENERAL secretary of the PSOE in Almeria, Jose Luis Sanchez Teruel, has criticised the leader of the PP in Andalucia, Moreno Bonilla, for what he described as hidden meetings.

Teruel accused Bonilla of “going from photo to photo” using Almeria as a “background for their personal photo call without offering a single solution to issues as urgent as the drought in the province, farming sector aid demands, decommissioning of renewable energy, closure of Calar Alto, economic strangulation on dependency, or the lack of commitment of Rajoy’s government with the AVE works on hold for two years.”

He also accused Bonilla of being involved in

Certificates all round SUMMER SCHOOL ended this week for 40 children between the ages of three and 12 at two women’s centres in Almeria.

All the young attendees received certificates of attendance and a small gift as part of a closing ceremony hosted by councillor for Equality Policies, Lafita Carolina, accompanied by representatives from Almeria City Council, Juan Jose Segura and Carlos Sanchez.

Lafita Carolina congratulated all the young attendees for the “good performance and reception this year.” She continued: “This year, besides covering all the spaces offered, we diversified and expanded the range of activities, offering parents and alternative education for their children during the summer months.

“The aim of these schools is to reconcile family and working life during these months, providing comprehensive care to children, in this case workshops and educational activities.

This has become a very useful service at affordable prices.”

Join EWN and say NO to sexism and YES to equality for women FURTHER controversy over the Spanish political establishment’s outdated views on women and sexual assault has arisen after comments made by a mayor to a radio station that seem to disparage accusations of rape.

Francisco Javier León de la Riva, the Partido Popular (PP) mayor of Valladolid in central Spain, has been forced to apologise for comments made to the Onda Cero radio station on Thursday about women falsely accusing men of rape. The mayor said he would think twice about getting into a lift alone with a woman for fear of false cries of rape.

Referring to a recent unsolved case in his city, De la Riva wholeheartedly condemned all forms of violence, but said it was

impossible to station a police officer in every park, and that women should think carefully about where they go at 6 o’clock in the morning.

He added: “Sometimes it’s the other way around.

Imagine you are in a lift with a girl who is out to get you. She rips off her bra or skirt and runs out screaming that you tried to assault her.”

Reaction to the mayor’s comments was fierce and immediate, with some taking to social media to demand his resignation.

On Friday, Valladolid Town Council issued a statement through Twitter, saying: “The mayor wishes to clarify his words which have been misinterpreted and taken out of context.

He apologises for any offence caused.”

she has the right to wear what she likes; has the right to go where she likes; and has the right to do what she likes without fearing lewd stares and sexual violence, EWN will continue to campaign for equality.

Equality in the workplace, equality at home, and equality in public places.

Instead of telling our daughters what not to wear, we should show our sons how to respect their female peers.

Festival of folklore success ALMERIA hosted the 31st edition of the Festival of Folklore at the weekend which attracted approximately 2,000 visitors to Plaza Viejo.

Groups from Chile,

Murcia, Peru, Russia and Senegal performed in a festival that “promotes coexistence and understanding between different cultures”, said the councillor for Culture,

The event was full of colour and energy as the performers danced their way through the two day event, representing their

Helping Hands concert for Rita THE expatriate community is rallying round to help the treasurer of Helping Hands who suffered a

horrific accident.

Rita was one of the driving forces in the cat neutering programme for

San Juan del los Terreros.

Although not a Helping Hands initiative, Rita’s love for cats prompted her to assist another charity by catching and transporting feral cats to Sorbas for neutering, with the aim of reducing the huge cat population in the town.

In 2013 Rita was following up on a request to remove a cat for neutering. However, as she tried to secure the cat, Rita fell into an uncovered pool pump housing set below ground, sustaining horrific injuries.

After a lengthy period of time Rita was found and airlifted to hospital.

Subsequently she was transferred to a hospital in her homeland, Belgium.

Despite ongoing therapy, it is now believed that Rita will never regain the use of her arms and legs. The only

Ministry’s advice on rape sets off a storm THE Ministry of the Interior’s advice to women on how to avoid rape has created a storm on Twitter.

Users of the social media website denounced the advice as chauvinistic and laying the blame on victims.

Among other things the advice recommends that women should buy a whistle to call for help and avoid using lifts if there is a stranger in them as well as sitting near the driver on a deserted bus.

Several PSOE delegates have shown their disgust at the advice saying it further victimises the victims by making it seem as though they could have avoided the crime if only they had had a whistle.

The PSOE secretary for equality, Carmen Monton, said government attitude was outdated and would get them nowhere in the modern world and agreed with a tweet which had come in which said “Instead of teaching women how not to be raped, why don’t we teach men not to rape?”

Freight train blues as sector shrinks SPAIN’S rail freight sector shrank by half in the last decade while Europe’s increased by 4 per cent.

Progress is being hindered in a strategically important sector, say the country’s seven independent freight operators.

They lay the blame squarely on state rail operator Renfe, which they accuse of disloyal competition since the 2006 deregulation.

“Renfe Freight practises predatory and disproportionate price strategies that have plunged the sector into an untenable situation,” said Juan Diego Pedrero, director of the

Association of Private Railway Companies (AEFP).

Despite multimillion losses these are offset by Renfe’s other operations, Pedrero complained.

Renfe Freight had restricted the development of private sector operators, he said, allowing them to acquire only 20 per cent of the market since 2006.

Neither was deregulation accompanied by better infrastructure, Pedrero continued. Spain’s track width is different, sidings are too short for foreign trains and timetables are incompatible with international logistics, he said.

Any decision now rests with the Spanish government acting on the recommendations of the Nuclear Safety Council (NSC), Oettinger explained.

Lost cigarette duty going up in smoke CIGARETTE sales fell by 47 per cent in Spain over the last five years.

Twenty-four per cent of the Spanish population aged over 15 admitted to the 2012 National Health Survey that they smoke each day, compared to almost 30 per cent in 2000.

Partly this is due to the success of anti-smoking laws and greater awareness of the health risks involved.

But increased tax on cigarettes, a steady source of income for governments everywhere, has done as much as either of the former to discourage smoking.

A KPMG survey for leading cigarette companies found that 8.8 per cent of the cigarettes smoked in Spain are contraband. When added

to tobacco brought legally into the country by travellers, this means that no tax is paid on 11.3 per cent of all cigarettes smoked in Spain.

That in turn means that the taxman loses out on €718 million a year.

Meanwhile, low-cost brands account for 11 per cent of the market with best-selling makes like Elixyr, Golden America or Winfield costing between €3.95 and €4.10 for 20, compared to €4.8 charged for Marlboro over the counter or €4.95 from a machine.

Cheaper lines were once overlooked by the big cigarette companies, but Altadis - formerly Spanishowned and now part of Imperial Tobacco - has seen sales of the relatively cheap Brooklyn brand soar.

CIGARETTE SALES: Have fallen by 47 per cent in Spain over past five years.

Like Fortuna, they are made in Logroño at the last cigarette factory on the Spanish mainland; a further factory remains open in Cantabria although this manufactures cigars.

In 2009, Altadis made and sold 2.5 million packets of Brooklyn - just 0.06 per cent of the Spanish market - worth €6.7 million. By 2013, this had

risen to 38.1 million packets with sales of €148.4 million and a market share of 1.6 per cent.

The Logroño factory now employs 560 staff, compared with 650 in the past, prompting Altadis CEO Juan Arrizabalaga to admit that he “fears” for its future. Not from

the point of view of profitability, as it is one of the most productive Imperial Tobacco factories.

What most worries Arrizabalaga are those changing habits: the market is shrinking, he explained to a Spanish interviewer, and Europe could soon need fewer factories.

EXPORTS UP: Although foreign demand has slowed down.

No need to mind the gap SPAIN’S trade gap rose to €11.9 billion in the first six months of this year. That is twice as much as during the same period last year, the Economy ministry announced.

Although exports increased by 0.5 per cent to €119.3 billion, an all-time high since records were first kept in 1971, imports totalled €131.1 billion.

There has been a cutback in foreign demand in recent months, analysts explained, owing to an economic slowdown in Germany, France and Italy. Added to the continuing dispute with Russia, this

brought a 1.2 per cent reduction in exports in June.

European ‘lethargy’ did little to assist exports, said junior Trade minister Jaime Garcia Legaz who admitted that if Europe failed to grow it would be difficult to reach the export levels of the preceding years.

‘Five-a-day’ could help beat Russian ban FRUIT and vegetable exports rejected by Russia will be withdrawn from the market and donated to charity.

Brussels has also agreed to alleviate losses resulting from the Russian government’s 12-month veto of EU imports with a €125 million cash allocation. Health service a real shock for pensioner DESPITE having always been more than happy with the Spanish health system, I feel duty bound to warn people of a most worrying occurrence.

A neighbour of mine who has grave medical problems was sent by ambulance by the local clinic to El Toyo hospital.

On presenting her social security card she and her friend were informed that her treatment would not be covered and that she would have to pay. The hospital did a scan and transferred her to Torre Cadenas hospital where the crisis was resolved.

Currently back in Torre Cadenas, a registered letter arrived at her home address invoicing her for in excess of €600, covering two ambulance journeys, scan and observation.

She has been a resident here for more than eight years and has ‘residencia.’ She is on the padron, is a pensioner, a tax-payer, registered disabled and in receipt of home help as authorised by the Spanish social worker.

The bill she received claimed that if she didn’t pay in full within 15 days the money would be deducted from her bank account.

Only threat of legal action by her friend, a fluent Spanish speaker, has averted this charge.

Be warned! Obviously the economic situation in Spain is bad, but preying on and discriminating against vulnerable people is not to be tolerated, particularly when the British Government is paying into this country’s social security system on our behalf.

Long way round I AM faced with a quandary: do I sell my property in Mallorca or not?

The reason for the quandary is the lack of direct flights from Glasgow after October.

If you live north of Manchester there are no direct flights until March 2015. For the Christmas holiday period we are flying from Glasgow through London City airport to get to Palma.

A FRIEND and I, chatting in English waiting in the x-ray department of our area’s Specialist centre, were approached by a woman with a bandaged leg.

She looked like a tourist and wanted to know how to get hold of her x-ray plates.

She was sent there by the local health centre after her ankle, twisted a couple of days earlier, had swelled alarmingly. She had been told to return with the x-ray results, she said.

I went to the information desk and asked on her behalf, but learnt that doctors access x-rays online and plates are not usually developed.

Off she went, slightly put out, as she was already irritated after having been warned by the Urgencias doctor not to put her weight on her foot. If she wanted to walk on it she should get crutches, she was advised. On asking for crutches, she was told to hire them from one of the many establishments specialising in this type of thing.

It was a disgrace, she moaned.

Now I was irritated: “Do you know how much a private x-ray and consultation would have cost you?” I asked. She shrugged and had the grace to look a little shamefaced.

I think she’d already done pretty well out of our system, don’t you?

HOUGHT I’d leave out the Mid-East fiasco this issue, give a bit of time for the Nationals to catch up!

So, in a week where we were told that Brussels is about to ban the sale of certain types of vacuum cleaner, lots of fatty foods are now miraculously good for us; Mariella Frostrup recommends taking someone else’s husband on holiday (wot!?) and Louise Mensch informed the media she’d rather see Ed Miliband eating a bacon sandwich than look at Karen Danczuk’s cleavage (no comment!) they’ve decided to erect a bronze statue to deceased songstress Amy Winehouse.

Can anyone in God’s name tell me why? This was a young lady, with the good fortune to have been born with a considerable talent, who subsequently managed to squander it all, by leading a life of drugs abuse, alcoholism, and a sheer debauchery unequalled REAL DEAL: Churchill did merit a statue. by any other show biz

immortalising these talent wasters in bronze, is nothing short of a disgraceful reflection of the priorities held by certain members of our money squandering local council members.

Actually this whole past month has been a bit of an ‘ealth and safety lunacy drive. No more than two children to an adult at swimming pools. Donkey rides banned from some beaches. Workers told they couldn’t wear open toed shoes in summer and, although nothing to do with ‘ealth and safety, a real humdinger in the light of Brussels’ appalling waste of taxpayers’ money. Specifically it has now been announced that Britain is to donate £1.6 million (€2.01 million) to fund bin collection on the Caribbean island of Cuba! I dunno, sometimes I really do despair of it all.

That is also then detrimental to other businesses as people don’t then leave the hotels and visit local bars and restaurants.”

Best live like a lion

I

FREELY concede that jogging is a popular pastime. In my opinion running is a misbegotten method of achieving physical fitness.

Rather than jogging being a natural activity it is wholly out of kilter with the natural world. Did Charles Darwin jog? I think not.

Henry Ford, when asked if he exercised, replied: “If you’re well there’s no need. If you’re sick you shouldn’t.”

My 30-year friend is hooked on jogging.

“We did a City-2-Surf on Sunday,” he boasted. This is a 14 kilometre run from the centre of Sydney to Bondi Beach.

“I found it tough going,” he writes. I had the runners-s*** on the day and possible arrhythmia (irregular heart beat).” I rest my case.

Although an active person, a seaman for years and world traveller, physical exercise has never appealed to me.

I despised cross country runs as a schoolboy but I had little choice in setting out that ridiculous curriculum. From there on hard work was my physical and mental workout. None the worse for it, I think all my exercise prone contemporaries are now kicking up the daisies.

KING LION: The most bone idle of the big cats.

I am no expert on world fauna but as far as I am aware there is not a single species that exercises or works-out to keep fit.

The lion is said to be the king of the jungle. The lion is a symbol of raw power, courage and nobility.

The lion’s formidable strength and

nomadic independence inspires us all.

The truth is rather different. Lions are the most bone idle of the big cats. Like the Royal Family they spend 16 to 20 hours each day sleeping or resting. This is perhaps why the lion is known as the king of the jungle?

He and two or three male relatives share a harem of up to 10 lionesses as the pride listlessly roam the savannah. Lions, when they are awake, constantly squabble and fight among themselves.

Can’t be trusted with the cubs, all that is expected of the males is that they defend their territory.

As lionesses are keen as mustard in this department too you could say that this most ignoble of beasts is surplus to requirement.

The shopping is 90 per cent done by the lionesses, but males eat first and get the best cuts. On the rare occasion male lions do hunt they get it right about 50 per cent of the time.

What do lions do during the few hours they are conscious? They flirt with the lionesses. At fornication lions are Oscar winners, but in terms of endurance the lion leaves much to be desired. His amorous activity is exhausted in less than one minute.

In fairness he quickly recovers his interest every 15-minutes or so and keeps it up for five days. This might explain why a surplus of shut-eye is essential during the less amorous periods. Life with the lions indeed.

Still living on a different planet

HAT planet do they live on? Politicians, that is. A furore has been caused by official Ministry guidelines on how to avoid rape.

Measures include having a whistle with which to summon help, avoiding using lifts if there is a stranger in them and sitting near the driver on empty buses.

Campaigners on gender issues point out that this advice seems to put the blame for attacks on the victims rather than the perpetrators.

Then to compound the controversy, Francisco Javier León de la Riva, the Partido Popular mayor of Valladolid, made comments on radio that appeared to denigrate women’s accusations of rape. He said that he would think twice before getting into a lift with a woman for fear of being falsely accused of rape.

He was forced to apologise.

This raises the wider issue of how

sexist is ‘macho’ Spain. Although women certainly have more freedom then they did a few decades ago, and there are many women in the professions, business and politics, old attitudes still persist.

A woman’s place continues to be in the home for many, even when they work as well. It is women who have to look after the home and bring up the children, that is just the way it is.

And for far too many men, women are still viewed as a possession. At its worst, that leads to the disgraceful toll of domestic violence in Spain.

If a woman is ‘disobedient’ many men view it as only too natural to turn to violence, with appalling results. So far this year in Spain, 38 women have died at the hands of their partners or ex-partners.

That will continue as long as StoneAge attitudes persist. Politicians should be trying to change those attitudes, not espousing them.

LOOKING back on it all, I have decided that my life would have been lived a lot easier if I had known that certain words that I errantly carried with me while crossing the pond didn’t exist in use, action or philosophical thought in this country called Spain. Primarily amongst them is ‘Driving Etiquette.’

Now, you’ll shrug your shoulders and squeak: “Everyone knows that now.”

But, be fair. Now is now and then was 45 years ago. Cars bouncing about the beach of Mojacar were as common as space ships to the Moon.

The roads were primarily owned by use of antiquity. That means burros and sheep had right of way and primary occupancy. Blast your horn you might, but all shepherds were genetically born deaf so would never hear you. Black frocked women lovingly holding the tails of their husband’s donkey as

Words that never existed in Spain until… they sashayed home from market were also deaf.

My USA mindset had been created in having watched obstacles bolt out of the way of oncoming cars. Not so here.

I hadn’t taken into account historical ownership and Spanish ‘pundodor’ (dignity) of greater value than possible injury or even death.

The other formal culprit for mucking up an important day’s scheduling is the guy that stops to talk with his neighbour, Paco, who he hasn’t probably seen for at least 18 minutes. They both

need to know what the other has been up to, what the other has seen, or gossip that has been gleaned while making the distant journey to the other side of town.

Damn I would get furious. It was an emblematic thing for Americans to be constantly busy, preoccupied, buzzing here, leaping there and never noticing the scantily clad damsels strolling along the way.

I was often forced to witness gargantuan drivers fall to their knees begging to be let by her Seat 600 which wasn’t as large as the tyres of their lorries.

It was a time honoured dignity thing for the Spanish man not to ever back down, unless of course they met that little blue car of hers.

Changes were made in the etiquette in our area fairly quickly. Why I swear even the sheep would part like the red sea when that tiny car came humming around the corner.

Happy Valley to be back for second series HAPPY VALLEY has been renewed for a second series by BBC One. Sally Wainwright’s popular drama series will return for a second run in 2015, with production beginning earlier in the year. The first series starred Sarah Lancashire as police sergeant Catherine Cawood, who crosses paths with former prisoner Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton), whom she believes is responsible for the death of her daughter.

The Wrong Mans is to return for a Christmas special later this year. Co-stars and writers James Corden and Mathew Baynton will reunite for two one-hour specials on BBC Two.

“We’re doing one-hour specials for BBC Two that I think will play at Christmas,” Corden told Radio Times. “It was hard working out whether we do a whole new story, or try and pick up where we left off. I think we’ve found an outcome that we’re all happy with.”

Dawn French will also return as Corden’s mother, while Olivier Award-winning actor Bertie Carvel will appear in a guest role. The Wrong Mans is centred around council workers Phil and Sam, who find themselves caught up in a farreaching conspiracy. The Wrong Mans was previously renewed for a second series back in April. Corden was recently reported to be replacing Craig Ferguson on The Late Late Show on CBS in the US. Take care around the pool THE tragic death of a two-year-old boy in a Mijas, Andalucia, swimming pool has thrown into sharp focus the issue of swimming pool safety.

Part of the dream of living in the warm sunshine of Spain is access to an outdoor swimming pool.

The pleasure of splashing into the pool, floating on a lilo, doing a couple of laps and putting the week’s stresses behind you is a great reward.

However, with pool ownership comes great responsibility.

Children are naturally drawn to water, but it is impossible for a parent to watch a child every single moment of their life. It only takes a second for an accident to happen and the results can be devastating.

Installing a pool safety fence gives you, your family and if you rent out your villa, your guests, peace of mind. In the most basic common sense terms, if a child cannot get close to the pool, then they simply cannot get in.

Community pools are regulated throughout Spain, with specifics on the height of fences, gates, child

WITH yet another celebrity being fingered - the 73year-old Cliff Richard - over an alleged assault dating back to the 1980s, you have to ask yourself when is this celebritytargeting going to end?

So far, we’ve had Stuart Hall, Rolf Harris, Freddie Starr, Gary Glitter, Jim Davidson, Dave Lee Travis, Bill Roache and PR chief, Max Clifford. What a roll call!

Whilst I don’t condone what Cliff Richard or his fellow celebrities might be accused of, I do have some

In France, the law states that all private pools should be equipped with a safety fence and gate with a self-closing latch, failure to comply carries fines of up to €220,000.

We call on our readers to call, email, text, whatsapp and that old fashioned mode of communication, write a letter to their political representatives and demand that Spain adopt an enforceable policy similar to that of France.

• Secure your pool with appropriate barriers. Surround your pool with a four-foot high fence or barrier with a selfclosing, self-latching gate. Place a safety cover over the pool or hot tub when you are not using it and remove any ladders or steps that you use for access.

• Keep children under active supervision at all times.

Stay in arm’s reach of younger children. Select a responsible person to watch the water when the pool is in use - never allow children or weak swimmers to swim alone. Have young or inexperienced swimmers wear a floatie if playing near the pool.

• Ensure everyone in the home knows how to swim.

Take pleasure in teaching those who can’t swim how to, or, if too busy enrol them in a local swimming class.

• Enforce rules and safe behaviour, such as ‘no diving,’ ‘stay away from drain covers,’ ‘swim with a friend’ and ‘no running.’

• Make sure everyone in the home knows how to respond to emergencies by having appropriate safety equipment and taking water safety, first aid and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) courses.

British justice or a celebrity witch hunt problems with the handling of investigations. First off, the lack of anonymity given to those faced with historical sexual offence claims.

According to common law, people are innocent until proven guilty, and they should be entitled to anonymity, at least until a court orders otherwise.

When the mere fact of an arrest (which the police and the tabloids have every interest in widely publicising) can effectively kill someone’s career, the balance is in the wrong place. It’s simply wrong and flies in the face of justice for their accusers to be able to make, anonymously, public accusations.

In Cliff Richard’s case, David Crompton, Chief Constable of South Yorkshire police, has been

fingered himself over his handling of the criminal inquiry. His officers tipped off the BBC about an imminent search of the singer’s Berkshire home - a search that may have been illegal.

David Davis, the Tory MP, said the force should not have confirmed Richard’s identity to the BBC: “It lays the process of law and order open to becoming a machinery for injustice.”

Geoffrey Robertson QC called for an independent inquiry, accusing the police of “treating Cliff Richard as though he were a bank robber or a mass murderer.”

Why were the police searching Richard’s home anyway?

The alleged incident took place almost 200 miles away in the 1980s. And we all know how

hard it is to convict someone beyond reasonable doubt decades later.

It’s been claimed that so much has been spent investigating historical sexual offence claims that there’s insufficient funding left for current cases. Would the police be pursuing these individuals if they weren’t celebrities?

Is there maybe here a bit of envy of the ‘rich and famous’ and the perception that their reputations should be trashed long before the case reaches a courtroom?

Stress and insomnia rises in the summer months WHILST many can take the summer off and enjoy the Spanish lifestyle, a report has found that those having to continue working can suffer from increased stress and lack of sleep.

In the summer months the noise of the bar terraces, nightclubs and continual fiestas, causes cases of stress and

insomnia, tripling in some of the most affected coastal areas.

Main symptoms include chronic fatigue, irritability, poor performance and even anxiety attacks according to Nascia, which works on combating stress and related problems.

“It’s not just a problem of lack of sleep,

but extends to all areas of the affected day, incapacitating the sufferer to carry out normal activity,” said Nascia director Muñoz Gacto. “The problem should be treated with a programme performance to prevent the person from entering a vicious circle in which anxiety or stress are the protagonists.”

In Barcelona 68 per cent of its citizens at some point are exposed to decibel levels reported at double the allowable rate.

In most coastal and tourist areas such as Benidorm, Malaga and Almeria, many people are affected each year by the increased noise.

If it rains then act fast to keep your garden in order Dick Handscombe

A

LTHOUGH the recent weather has been a little cooler due to extensive cloud cover and heavy early morning dews there has yet to be noticeable heavy rains.

But whether in September, October or November, it is likely that heavy autumn rains will come. If, as last year, there is none then we are really facing a record drought.

However let’s look on the bright side and assume rain comes and look at the first jobs to be done. I suggest the following 10.

1. Collect as much rain as possible in water tanks, butts and black builder’s buckets. One of our neighbours keeps a

2. Loosen up all the unmulched soil surfaces around the garden, to ensure that rain is absorbed and does not run off.

3. Do a weeding as soon as seemingly dead weeds spring to life and dry weed seeds start to germinate.

4. As the year long drought developed shrubs

and perennials that could die back during dry periods, especially if exposed to scorching southerly winds, were not summer pruned but once heavy rain has fallen catch up on pruning for size and shape.

5. Salad leaves as normal lettuces or cut and come again mixes were difficult to keep going by mid-July but after the rains start sowing or transplanting plantlets for autumn, Christmas and spring.

6. With the damp, hibernating snails could

well emerge so be watchful and place eco snail pellets around young vegetables.

Slugs may well also appear.

Slug pellets and Neem powder are useful deterrents. Hopefully we will not start to see the giant six inch long slugs now appearing around the UK, here in Spain.

7. Many fruit trees, especially in moderate sized gardens and in containers, could do with a shaping and sizing. Not only will they look better but nutrients will be directed at the development of next year’s fruiting buds.

8. The water in many garden ponds looks a little green but an ecological anti-algae and flocculating agent will soon have the water sparkling clear again.

9. Cut the dead flowers off the lavender plants if not previously cut and distilled for home-made lavender oil.

10. Blackberries could well swell up to a good size during September so harvest from the garden and local hedgerows and open woodlands for freezing for winter use.

Have a ball the old Spanish way eating sunflower seeds IT is a truth universally acknowledged that Spaniards love eating sunflower seeds.

Some call it a vice. Salty and light, they are a great alternative to chewing gum or eating nuts.

The addictive nature of its consumption can even be compared to smoking a cigarette.

Watch groups of talking bystanders at processions or the beach. Spaniards have developed a system by which they pick one, crack it open using their front teeth, swallow it, throw the seed case away and start again in a speedy, strangely-noisy motion.

Street habits aside, sunflower seeds originated in Central America 3,000 years ago and it

POPULAR: Rich in minerals. was the Spaniards who brought them back to Europe in the 15th century. It was such a delicacy, that it was compared to drinking wine, smoking, dancing etc… and therefore the Spanish expression “to have a ball” can be “pasarlo pipa.”

According to Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, the seeds are very rich in minerals. Their main benefit is the high amount of Vitamin E present in each seed which is a powerful antioxidant, helping heart disease and lowering the risk of cancer.

Aubergine: a blank slate IN the past, many recipes recommended salting aubergines to reduce their bitter flavour. This isn’t necessary, although salting does make them absorb less oil when they’re fried. To prepare, wash the skin and trim off the stalk. Slice them and soak in beer for a few minutes before dipping them in flour and fry.

This humble plant has played a major part in many popular regional cuisines throughout the world, the most popular perhaps being French ratatouille. The bland flavour of the aubergine makes it the perfect blank slate to which spices and herbs can be added.

An apple a day will not keep the dentist away ACCORDING to the latest research, an apple a day really will keep the doctor - and a whole range of diseases - away.

Scientists from Cambridge University, who surveyed 30,000 people about their diet, found that those who ate fruit were twice as likely to outlive those who don’t.

But what exactly in an apple is good for you?

The skin of apples contains Pectin, which helps lowering cholesterol and stabilises sugar levels.

The flesh of an apple has many nutrients and benefits. An apple provides 25 per cent of

the recommended daily intake of Vitamin C; Vitamin E fights off free radicals responsible for our skin aging; Boron helps keep energy levels high and Potassium helps the healthy functioning of cells, nerves and muscles; Dental experts are warning that the fruit can be as bad as eating sweets. It should not be eaten as snacks because of its high level of sugar and acidity which erode teeth.

The fruit’s sugar content has risen by up to 50 per cent over the last decade, which means it contains the equivalent of four teaspoons of sugar.

Two tractor Take up the challenge… thieves arrested Trevor Spencer

TWO men have been arrested in Albox following the theft of two vehicles including a tractor.

Between them, the two men (AMNR and DJML) both 20-years-old and residents of Albox had more than 100 previous incidents on their records, predominantly for vehicle theft. They were arrested following the theft of a tractor that later caused a car accident. The men allegedly stole a tractor in the Alto Almanzora area breaking down a metal gateway for exit.

The damage left the road outside strewn with rubble which caused an innocent driver to crash

his car hours later, hospitalising him with head injuries and writingoff his vehicle.

Officers of the Guardia Civil began an investigation leading them to discover the theft of a second vehicle in the area, stolen the same day. The owner of the second vehicle found his car, surprising the thieves who quickly left the scene.

The officers went on to arrest two men on suspicion of theft of two motor vehicles. The tractor was recovered later hidden in a secluded patch at Rambla de las Pocicas. The men await court.

HELLO and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Over the previous articles we have developed an understanding of how your Operating System (Windows xxxxxx) has evolved into the GUI that we have learned to accept.

There are many Operating Systems and many variations on the GUI. For example, Windows (up to this ridiculous ‘Metro’ interface) had a usable working system that allowed easy access to our ‘stuff’ and was consistent in appearance.

Android has a different look as does the Apple’s OS but each allows an easy way to get to whatever you want to do today.

I will set you a challenge and see how many have the strength of character to take up on it!

Friday, at Jack’s bar, between 12 and 4pm I will have several

computers set-up. One with Windows 7, one with Windows 8.1 and one with Linux. The challenge is this: is your Windows system better than the Linux system at the things you do every day?

The most common daily activities are: emails; keeping in touch (Facebook, Skype, WhatsApp, etc); online shopping and games. There are many more but, I suspect, that these cover the most usual uses. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT! Forgive the shouting (capital letters has always implied shouting) but there will always be some overly educated souls (soles?) that looks down on such a limited use. Morons that they are!

I would dare to suggest that everything that your favourite Windows platform CanDu, the Linux can do equally as well. Next time we will look closer at the benefits and drawbacks of Linux as a worthwhile replacement for Windows.

Albox gets its first female firefighter MAYOR of Albox, Rogelio Mena, has expressed his pleasure at the town employing its first female firefighter.

He said: “This is great news for the socialist government that believes in equal opportunity as a fundamental principle to ensure social equality.

“Albox is becoming a reference for others where women face difficulty in entering certain employment roles.”

The regional fire service, whose base is in

Albox, employed their first woman this month, following the town’s police force which already has female officers.

AGILITY most of you have seen on the television. This is where dogs run through tunnels and go over jumps and weave in and around poles.

What can you expect to see?

Jumps, hurdles, long jumps, weaving poles and a three metre ‘A’ frame. No agility course would be complete without the tyre hoop, the famous tunnel and seesaw. The equipment is made to

the highest safety standard and to Kennel Club Specification.

Can any dog do this?

Yes and all breeds and sizes provided the dog does not have a physical disability, such as hip dysplasia, and is not overweight.

It is not fair to jump a fat dog. If you have any doubt about the fitness of your dog then seek advice from your vet.

Is there an age limit for the dog or owner?

Children are most welcome to bring their pets. There is no age limit for dogs and pups are encouraged for the tunnel work, see-saw and dog walk plank. Of course heelwork, sit, down stays, send-away is part of the lessons as is walking the dog off leash on the left or right.

Equipment for dog and handler The most important thing is good footwear, shoes that you can run in and have a good grip.

Also wear clothes you can run in comfortably I recommend trousers for the ladies. For the dog, although an ordinary check collar or half check are both good for heelwork practice, these are not suitable for agility.

The correct collar is a leather or webbed buckle collar. Leads should be fairly long and made of leather, nylon or rope, not of chain, which can get caught up in the jumps.

PAWS neutering campaign aims to raise awareness MOJACAR based animal charity, PAWS-Patas has launched a campaign to raise awareness and promote the neutering of all pets, unless owners are using them specifically for breeding.

Neutering by a qualified vet is safe, and the animal remains healthy and happy. However, PAWS has had 125 puppies dumped at its shelter so far this year. That number is certain to rise.

The cattery has suffered a similar problem, taking in 30 cats and kittens. Over the summer people have stepped forward to foster, but the cats return to the shelter in September, piling on the pressure at the cattery once again.

For the dogs the situation remains serious.

“PAWS was founded as a society to protect maltreated and genuine stray animals,” said PAWS spokesperson Mike Dornan. “Our aim is to find them proper, loving and permanent homes. But we can’t concentrate on that work if we are overwhelmed by having to deal with so many puppies simply dumped by existing

Having animals neutered would avoid this whole problem.”

PAWS volunteer Anneli Löftstrom began an educational programme in the spring, visiting local schools to explain the work PAWS does and talk about animal welfare issues in general. “We are hoping by targeting the next generation of Spanish adults we can help to change some of the attitudes which have

traditionally been held in this part of Spain,” said Anneli.

All animals homed through the PAWS shelter are automatically neutered as standard. The cat section has been running an independent neutering programme for feral cats for nearly 20 years, neutering up to 150 cats annually. This has had a major impact in reducing the colonies of feral cats living wild on the streets of

Mojacar and neighbouring towns.

“PAWS has discussed with local town halls and the provincial council to agree on the benefit, need, and commitment to neutering,” said PAWS President Karen Polansky.

“Now we need to get the public to join us as well.

Housing rental prices now cheaper than in July RENTING a property is now cheaper than in May. Housing rental prices dropped by 0.8 per cent in July 2014, as recently stated by the Spanish National Statistics Institute. The same decline was witnessed in June 2014.

The sharpest decreases were witnessed in Navarra (-2.3 per cent), Madrid (-1.8 per cent), Murcia (-1.8 per cent), La Rioja (-1.6 per cent), Valencia and Extremadura (1.2 per cent), Andalucia (-1 per cent), Castilla La Mancha and the Canary Islands (-0.9 per cent).

On the other hand, rental prices in the Basque Country dropped at the national average rate (-0.8 per cent), while Cantabria and Castilla y Leon (-0.5 per cent), the Balearic

RICES of luxury real estate properties in Spain have remained steady in the last six months.

According to Lucas Fox International Properties, transactions have increased throughout Spain and the gap between asking and sales keeps narrowing. Moreover, foreign buyers account for the largest percentage of Lucas Fox sales 90 per cent - and interest from exotic regions like the Middle East and the Far East in Spain’s real-estate market is on the rise.

Buyers from Northern Europe have not fallen behind and they are not returning to the Spanish market attracted by investment opportunities and low prices.

In Barcelona there was a steady increase in sales in the first half of 2014, with most buyers coming from the UK and Northern European countries.

FOR some, it may still seem like a long way off, but it’s already part of everyday life at Opel: assembly tools produced by a 3D printer are an increasingly important part of the production process.

A six-strong team led by Virtual Simulation Engineer Sascha Holl prints plastic assembly tools in Rüsselsheim used in Opel manufacturing plants across Europe.

Cheaper and quicker to produce, these tools are being used at Eisenach for the assembly of the Adam and its new Adam Rocks stable-mate. And this is just the beginning - Opel experts predict the use of tools from a 3D printer will continue to grow.

“In the future, more and more 3D assembly tools will be integrated into the production process,” says Sascha Holl.

For production of the Adam Rocks, to be launched in September, the Eisenach carmakers use an assembly jig - a specific, fixed frame - made by a

And for the windshield, a 3Dprinted inlet guide is also used to simplify the mounting process

and help ensure a precise alignment. Other tools from the printer are used to fasten the chrome step plate on Adam Rocks door openings and install the standard Swing Top canvas roof.

Around 40 such assembly aids and jigs are used in Eisenach.

This equipment was developed on the computer during the development phase of Adam Rocks. “It enables us to quickly adapt the parts. If something changes on the vehicle, we can easily modify the tool with just a few clicks,” explains Holl.

“The 3D printing process enables us to produce every imaginable form and shape.

Unlike conventional manufacturing technology, we don’t have to accept any limitations.”

The Virtual Engineering Team in Rüsselsheim only has to reach into their bag of tricks when it comes to the maximum size of parts built. Using sophisticated technology to join a number of smaller elements, it is possible to produce larger parts. For instance, when developing an assembly aid for the side sill or rear spoiler of Adam Rocks.

During 3D printing, plastic is melted and laid down in successive layers, each just 0.25 mm thick. The plastic used is light, robust and versatile.

Plug into a Mercedes-Benz THE new Mercedes-Benz S500 plug-in hybrid price has been revealed.

Customers will be able to buy it from October with a price tag that starts at €112,200 in Spain.

Summer contests CABRERA Lawn Bowling hosted the last of the summer competitions, The Two Wood Trips.

The competition was fiercely contended and the finalists were Trevor Robinson, Paul Cartwright and Brendan Cullen against Doreen Sands, Ian Jackson and Janet Jackson.

Trevor’s team got off to a flying start going 11-1 up after nine ends. Doreen’s team fought back admirably and after 14 ends were only three down at 13-10. Trevor’s team, however, surged on again and took five on the last three ends to win the competition 18-10.

Commiserations to Doreen, Ian and Janet who had a great fight back but were beaten by the better team Earlier in the month the club held the Mixed Singles Knockout Sets Play Competition. After some very competitive rounds the final was held between Sue Sephton and Arthur Lees. Arthur is 86-years young and Sue is recovering from an illness and not yet fully fit so to have these two members in the final was a joy.

The first set was fiercely contested and it was finally won

by Arthur 7-6. The second set was a little more one sided and Arthur eventually won that set 9-3, to take the match.

On the 12th end the score was 12 shots all.

Austin and John scored six shots on the last two ends to win 18 - 12.

Long trip to Vicar by 19th Hole GS

TWENTY members of the 19th Hole Golf Society made the long trip down to La Envia Golf Complex near Vicar.

It was a trip well worth the effort as the course can only be described as beautiful, with tree lined fairways, tees almost manicured, and the greens perfect.

Some teams, in this four ball best of two Stableford

competitions scored well, but others others fared less well.

The winning four ball, by a very small margin, was the team of Ian, Jose, Nekana and Paco scoring 80 points, followed by Zeta and Dave Denyer, Mike Palmer and Gary Grey with 78 points.

It was a really great days golf in superb surroundings followed by excellent hospitality back at La Vida.

The 19th Hole G/S arranges weekly games at various courses in the area, with their home course, played fortnightly being Aguilon.

Birdie Man scores 43 LES ARMFIELD earned himself the nickname Birdie Man as he returned a score of 43 points, including five birdies, to win Monday’s competition at Marina Phoenix.

Second with 40 points was Ali Mahmud followed in third by Shaun Elder (38). The ladies division was won by Rosalie Fardon (35) with Margaret Budd in second.

Last Thursday saw teams of four counting the best three on odd holes and the best two on evens.

Against a par of 90 the winners returned 103 stableford points: Ali Mahmud, Marcos Caparros, John Lally and Rosalie Fardon.

Second, one point behind, were Brian Couper, Carole Donoghue, Antonio Ubeda and Jim Budd (102) with third going to Tony Cordingley, Isobel Jones, Tony Scott and Geoff Smith (98). Nearest the pin prizes were won by Tony Scott (5th) and Nadie Wass (14th).
