Pulpi ‘paedophile’ to be extradited

COLOMBIA’S Supreme Court has ordered the extradition to Spain of a 42-year-old-man (C.A.R.L.) accused of molesting children.

The man stands accused of molesting at least six children in his capacity as a paediatrician at his practice in Pulpi. The children were all 13 years old or younger.

The first report was made by a parent who said her eight-year-old son was in the doctor’s care at his home when the boy was abused. C.A.R.L. arrived in the province in

2008 and worked as a paediatric doctor until September 2013.

The man was arrested in Bucaramanga in Colombia in March following an investigation by the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Interpol and Colombian police. He faces a sentence of up to 34 years in prison in Spain.

However, he already has a prior conviction in his home country of Colombia for similar offences. He may have to serve a jail term in Colombia before being extradited.

HE glitz and glamour were turned up to full volume when heiress and celebrity Paris Hilton paid a visit to Spain.

Euro Weekly News (EWN) proved that ‘It Gets It’ when our staff caught up with her to take exclusive pictures after she jetted in to be DJ at plush celebrity haunt Olivia Valere.

She was playing her Broken Hearts set at the Marbella nightclub which was packed with socialites and special guests for the much anticipated show.

She told EWN: “I love Marbella because it is so fun and classy. I’ve had to turn down great offers

around the world because I’m so solidly booked. I would love to stay for a week and really relax and enjoy it but I have so much to do.”

Asked why she chose to become a DJ she said that when she does get days off work, there’s nothing she loves more than to chill out in her studio at home, with her dogs, writing songs and singing. She loves to see the crowd dance, smile and scream.

Olivia Valere described Paris as “a very kind, sweet person” and this certainly seemed the case when she called a young man out of the crowd to have his picture taken with her, saying: “Wait a minute… I want to take a picture for this guy because he is so lovely.” Jose Castillo, 25, a self-confessed mega-fan, had travelled from Cordoba and queued for two hours, just to catch a glimpse of his idol.

THANK YOU: Bedar’s mayor thanks the pilgrims on behalf of the town.

The pilgrims return BEDAR’S pilgrims, Eileen, Sheila and Jackie, have returned home from their 320 kilometre walk along el Camino de Santiago.

Leaving Bedar on July 12 they walked from their starting point of Roncesvalles, arriving at Leon on July 28.

Starting at 5am most mornings, the ladies walked 20 to 30 kilometres each day through Roman pathways, vineyards, pine forest, lush green countryside, orchards of olives and almonds and fields of sunflowers. They walked in all weathers with temperatures between 14 and 20 degrees.

Sheila sent daily reports to Bedar so people could follow their progress. The walk was not easy, and the

ladies often faced uneven paths, steep inclines and dangerous descents, but even blisters could not force them to cease their journey.

A welcome home party was held at El Paso in Bedar, courtesy of Javier and his family, with entertainment from local musicians Dennis, Clive, Doc and Lady Ellen.

A raffle was drawn with prizes donated by local individuals and businesses.

The mayor of Bedar, Francisco Collado Fernandez, attended and invited the pilgrims to a concert in their honour.

The concert was supported by a large crowd of local villagers. The final amount of €1,400 was raised from the fundraising

events over the past few weeks and has been deposited in the account for the Bedar band to pay for instruments and uniforms for new band members. The mayor thanked the women in a public speech on behalf of the town hall and the band.

Unfortunately Jackie could not attend, but Eileen and Sheila were delighted with the event and the response from the village and the band.

Next year Eileen and Sheila plan to finish The Way of St James when they pick up the path at Leon and walk to the famous pilgrimage site at Santiago de Compostelo where the body of the apostle St James is buried. They will both be 70 years of age.

Drug raid in Albox AGENTS from the Guardia Civil have arrested a 39-year-old Albox man (BWH) after discovering 42 marihuana plants at his home.

Due to an increase of the presence of marihuana in Albox, a research team from the Guardia

Civil have been monitoring a number of private premises, as well as the movements and activities of the inhabitants. One of these was a property in Albox which turned out to have 42 plants in its courtyard, partially hidden by black screens.

The operation is part of an ongoing investigation by the Guardia Civil into the production and distribution of illegal substances. The man is awaiting sentencing from the magistrate’s court in Huercal Overa.

La Taberna del Piano chose to honour Sir Paul McCartney as one of the most significant composers of the 20th century.

Sir Paul’s voice was provided by Antonio Alvarez, while the piano was played by Ramon Garcia. Guillermo Morente played the drums and Jose

Luis Gomez played bass.

The audience loved their performances of well known hits such as Lady Madonna, Michelle, Ebony and Ivory, Every Night and Jet from his time with the Beatles and Wings plus his solo career.

Ramon Garcia, who was born in Almeria, provided the arrangements which paid homage to the hits while offering a new twist.

Garcia is normally linked to Jazz, and is well known in the city of Almeria for his funny versions of songs.

INDALO Hash House Harriers said goodbye to ‘Aging Hippy’ (Gary) this week who passed away after a period of ill health. A popular member of the group, he will be missed.

Don’t forget to recycle glass ALMERIA City has joined forces with Ecovidrio, a non profit organisation responsible for managing the recycling of waste glass, and launched an awareness campaign with the aim of recycling glass.

As part of the initiative, 12 containers emblazoned with images related to the upcoming feria will be arranged around the fairground and venues at the epicentre of the feria, as well as in the vicinity of the Plaza del Toros.

Nigerian prostitution court date has been set for September ALMERIA has announced September as the hearing for the gang accused of prostituting Nigerian women and threatening them with voodoo.

The gang is comprised of eight members, accused of sexually exploiting the

Nigerian women, coercing them with voodoo, beatings and the kidnapping of their children.

The defendants face sentences up to 20 years in prison in the trial which begins on September 2 and is scheduled to run for

four further sessions on September 3, 16 and 15 and October 16.

The network facilitated entry into Spain for the victims with false promises of work, before forcing them into prostitution in strip clubs located in Vicar and Roquetas de Mar.

They told the women this was to settle a €50,000 debt.

The prosecution attests that some of the women were transferred to Germany, France and Denmark after their arrival in Spain by boat after a long journey from their home countries to Morocco..

Two drown in Cabo de Gata IT was a sad day in Cabo de Gata at the weekend as two people drowned on a notorious stretch of coastline.

The first death occurred in Cala de Plomo, between San Pedro and Aguamarga.

The circumstances of how the man happened to be in the water are unknown but authorities were alerted on

Saturday afternoon that a body was in the water.

Witnesses described the body as inert.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, but were unable to save the man’s life. He was a 49year-old holidaymaker from Poland.

An hour later, a group of youths from Almeria were enjoying the water at Los Escullos when one of the group got a cramp in his leg. He was screaming that he was paralysed. His friends tried to help him and hold him to the rock sides. Unfortunately the strength of the sea swell made this impossible.

The group continued throwing ropes, mats and other objects for him to grab onto but the waves took him away from them.

Emergency services sent a helicopter and after half an hour rescued one of the group that was trying to reach the 20-year-old lad. They did not reach the young man with the cramp in time.

THERE have been more arrests in an ongoing case in which police uncovered a money laundering web using training schemes as a cover to get substantial grants from the government.

There were no courses and no students.

The police investigation into the alleged fraud concluded that the 10,671 students they interviewed had not been on the training courses they had been signed up for. Police interviewed a random selection of hundreds of students, signed up for three different courses with Ucotrans transport company in Madrid, without finding even one who had actually done the course or even signed up for a course.

Alfonso Tezanos and Victor Porta, both from Madrid, and Jose Luis Aneri, from Cordoba, are all in prison provisionally for alleged fraud. Aneri is the administrator of Sinergia which is the company principally responsible for acquiring the funds from Madrid.

Tezanos was with the Chamber of Commerce in Madrid and was also a partner in companies offering allegedly false courses.

It is estimated that a total of €4.5 million was obtained illegally from state funds and

Rocking El Toyo EMMA rock band had El Toyo bouncing at the weekend as they blasted out classic hits.

The band, which has been formed less than a year, has already gained a strong and loyal fan base.

The band members met at the municipal school of music in Almeria, and their mutual love of rock brought them together.

The culmination of this was their biggest concert yet, pleasing an eager crowd, in Plaza del Mar at El Toyo.

Europe, Queen, Bon Jovi, AC/DC and Wizard were all featured in the concert which delighted rockers of all ages.

Music from the 70s, 80s and 90s was played to a crowd who struggled to keep their feet still.

Almeria City Fair: countdown is on THERE are just two more days to go before the weekend, and Almeria City’s feria starts.

Archaeological sites now open HISTORY lovers can now visit the archaeological site of Villaricos in Cuevas del Almanzora, a key site in the study of the Phoenician colonisation of Spain. The site dates from the eighth century BC. Public access to the site has been made possible with the collaboration of Cuevas del Almanzora Council after the work undertaken by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports.

The site is located on the left bank of the mouth of the Almanzora river and was originally excavated in the early 20th century by Luis Siret. It shows salted fish factories and a cemetery both from the Punic period. Some of the tombs date back to the seventh century BC.

In Antas, budding archaeologists can transport themselves back to the Bronze Age at the site of El Algar, next to the Gerundia. Historians and experts in the field say the site at Antas is probably the oldest in Almeria.

Built on a plateau with steep slopes to the west and gentler slopes to the east, the site is considered to be a settlement with Chalcolithic background. Siret discovered and excavated the site, documenting it in his 1890 book ‘The first metal ages in southeast Spain’.

The same period of time is refected in Cerro de Nacimientos in Macael, Fuente Alamo and El Oficio, both in Cuevas del Almanzora and Gatas in Turre.

Sharing moments ALMERIA Province has launched a photography contest in order to encourage and promote active ageing and intergenerational solidarity.

Under the title Shared Moments, the framework hopes to highlight the active role that older people play in society and the alliance of young and old for collaboration and mutual support.

Fake training schemes THERE have been more arrests in an ongoing case in which police uncovered a money-laundering web using training schemes as a cover to get substantial grants from the government.

There were no courses and no students. The police investigation into the alleged fraud concluded that the 10,671 students they interviewed had not been on the training courses they had been signed up for. Officers interviewed a random selection of hundreds of students, signed up for three different courses with Ucotrans transport company in Madrid, without finding one who had actually undertaken the course or had even signed up for a course.

Alfonso Tezanos and Victor Porta, both from Madrid, and Jose Luis Aneri, from Cordoba, are all in prison provisionally for alleged fraud. Aneri is the administrator of Sinergia, which is the company principally responsible for acquiring the funds from Madrid.

Tezanos was with the Chamber of Commerce in Madrid and was also a partner in companies offering allegedly false courses.

It is estimated that a total of €4.5 million was obtained illegally from state

Another €6.5 million was reportedly accepted fraudulently from national funds. Police investigations into the matter are ongoing as every time they catch more people it just leads to more corruption and more people involved in the growing web of lies.

Four drug arrests OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil have arrested four people suspected of drug trafficking.

JRMG, 25, JGG, 20, and LSH, 24, all residents of Almeria, along with 22-yearold ITB, a resident of Huercal Overa, were arrested after a car was pulled over in Huercal Overa.

After inspecting the car and carrying out a search of the three occupants, 20 grams of speed were found in their possession. The arrests led the officers to locate a fourth individual who had allegedly sold the drug to the occupants of the car.

Culture trip in Spain and Portugal VIGO and Porto were among the destinations for a cultural trip organised by Councillor for Culture in Roquetas de Mar, Maria Dolores Ortega.

The group undertook a cultural journey which led them to the cities of Vigo in Galicia and Porto in Portugal.

Among the trip’s events were a catamaran cruise on the River Sil Ribeira Sacra and a visit to Orense.

PSOE calls for audit LUIS VALVERDE, the secretary general of the PSOE political party in Santa Cruz da Marchena, has asked that the PP mayor of the town, Felipe Berenguer, carries out an audit of the municipal accounts.

The audit has been demanded to ‘break with the past’ in reference to former mayor Antonio Abad.

Valverde said: ”There is sufficient evidence of alleged mismanagement by the previous mayor.

Therefore an audit would shed light on the real

state of the municipal coffers. Residents have given more than a reasonable amount of time for Berenguer to take over the reins, but after the many months since he took office, all that has been found is disastrous management.

“The reality is stranger than fiction in this town,” continued Valverde, “where we know that you keep former mayor Antonio Abad in the shadows at the town hall.

You do not take a single step without authorisation from the former mayor.”

Barcelona close cannabis clubs BARCELONA is to close 50 cannabis clubs.

Catalan authorities in Barcelona are worried about the city’s reputation as a marihuana smokers’ haven and ordered the immediate closure of 50 cannabis clubs after detecting deficiencies in their management. The affected clubs stand accused of illegally selling cannabis, trying to attract nonmembers and of poor ventilation.

The number of Spanish cannabis clubs has rocketed in recent years from approximately 40 in 2010 to more than 700. The Catalan capital is home to more than 50 per cent of these clubs which sprung into existence thanks to a legal loophole in Spanish legislation allowing marihuana to not only be cultivated but also distributed to people who found a non-profit organisation.

Some clubs, however, have pushed the boundaries of Spanish legislation by encouraging tourists to sign up for temporary club membership over

the Internet before they arrive in Spain and buy drugs when they visit.

Barcelona Council recently imposed a one-year moratorium on associations creating cannabis clubs and now Catalan authorities have called for a tougher stance and stricter rules on cannabis.

These include passing regulations prohibiting the opening of cannabis clubs near schools and making it mandatory for them to be well ventilated at all times.

Furthermore, authorities wish to impose a maximum membership number and limit opening hours. In addition, the Catalan Ministry of Health is to present a bill in September to the Generalitat (Regional Government) to regulate cannabis consumption.

It is estimated that there are as many as 165,000 registered members of cannabis clubs in Catalonia, which brings approximately €5 million in revenue each month.

Calpe Salinas are now too salty after worst droughts CALPE’S salt beds are too salty thanks to one of the worst droughts ever recorded.

Hundreds of fish have died despite 1,800 cubic metres of seawater pumped into the Salinas each day since last April.

This has not averted high evaporation levels that deprive fish of the oxygen they need to survive, although the resulting salinity has prevented the green algae that often cover the salt beds in the summer. The present conditions are decimating the grey mullet that populate the Salinas although eels and sea bass

are less affected.

An Alicante University study did not detect fish in the Salinas 15 years ago although they now enter from the sea as hatchlings and, without natural predators, reproduce freely. The town hall asked visitors and residents not to dramatise the situation with photos of dead fish and alarmist commentaries in the social media. Fish always die in the Salinas when high temperatures combine with drought, the town hall’s Environment department pointed out.

Tougher stance SPAIN urged Brussels to take a tougher stance on illegal immigration.

Spanish President Mariano Rajoy called for a clear and effective European Union policy on

illegal immigration while emphasising the difficult situation his government has faced in recent days after massive attempts by sub-Saharan immigrants to illegally enter Spain.

Rajoy held a brief press conference in northwestern Spain where he expressed his wish for Italy to be at the forefront of an effective policy to combat illegal immigration and help those wishing to return to their countries of origin.

Spain is experiencing a massive wave of illegal immigration. As many as 750 immigrants tried to enter Spanish territory on Tuesday by climbing over the border fence in Melilla - while more than 299 were rescued last week in the Strait of Gibraltar.

More asylum needed HALF of all immigrants who manage to get over the fence in Ceuta and Melilla are refugees, but only 10 per cent of them receive asylum in Spain.

According to a report recently released by the Spanish Commission for Refugee Aid (CEAR) around half of the immigrants who come over the fences come from war-torn countries and should be given asylum in Spain although only around 10 per cent of them actually receive it.

CEAR has presented a campaign to collect 100,000 signatures with which to ask the government to take away the concertinaed barbed wire from the top of the fence and to respect human rights.

CEAR explains that refugees “are people

who never expected to have to leave their countries and ask for asylum in order to preserve their lives and physical safety.”

Carlos Berzosa, president of CEAR, has claimed that the government is trying to make out that jumping the fence is a recent problem in order to justify its “repressive methods,” when in actual fact this has always happened at that border.

He goes on to say that only 5 per cent of illegal immigrants come in through the fences in Ceuta and Melilla - the rest come in through airports, roads and trains.

Meanwhile Spanish president, Mariano Rajoy, is asking the UE for more guidelines on what is to be done about the immigrant situation.

The good news is…

T

HE good news is that Spain would appear to be firmly on the road to recovery. Along with the UK, economic growth rates are amongst the highest in the Western World.

A rise in GDP of 0.6 per cent in the first quarter beat all forecasts for Spain and is significantly above the shock 0 per cent and -0.2 per cent figures shown by France and Germany respectively. The UK is steaming ahead with 0.8 per cent growth.

But, worryingly for Spain, the UK is in a significantly better position for the simple reason that it controls its own currency. The UK can do whatever it wants to control its monetary policy.

Spain on the other hand is tied into the Euro. Thus it has to follow European policy. That has so far been seen to serve the best interests of the two largest European mainland

economies - France and Germany.

Overall the Euro has probably been a good thing for Spain, although those who remember the steep price rises when it was first introduced may beg to differ.

Let us hope the Spanish recovery is not hampered by policies designed to protect the two ‘senior’ members of the European club at the cost of the smaller countries.

A sad farewell ROBIN WILLIAMS was a genius of comedy, who will best be remembered for his films like Mrs Doubtfire. A genuinely funny man who kept the world in laughter, he was also a deeply talented actor with a string of hits in serious roles.

He will be fondly remembered by most for his jokes, and deeply respected by fellow actors for his talent. May he rest in peace.

Reheated Cold War cools exports of fruit and veg SPANISH exporters are not reassured by the Spanish government’s ‘keep calm’ policy regarding Russian sanctions.

The restrictions were Vladimir Putin’s response to earlier sanctions imposed by the West after a passenger aircraft was shot down over Ukraine by pro-Russian fighters.

According to Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, Spain stands to lose €337 million in lost exports, although the European Commission places this at €338 million.

Miguel Blanco president of COAG, coordinator of Spain’s growers and farmers, believes the figure is closer to €1.2 billion. “It’s not only direct exports of around €340 million

“We’re talking about €1.2 billion that will be indirectly affected too.”

According to the Spanish government, the effects of the Russian embargo will be limited. Although Brussels places Spain sixth behind Lithuania, Poland, Germany, Holland and Denmark as the most affected, there are 16 EU countries that will lose more than Spain, the government insisted.

Andalucia and the Valencian Community, which export fruit and vegetables year-round to Russia, expect to feel the greatest impact. Cataluña will also be affected, principally through seasonal exports of peaches, nectarines and plums.

The winner here is Latin America which has happily and hastily stepped into the breach left by EU exporters, to the displeasure of Brussels. They have been asked to reconsider their newly-signed contracts.

Portugal. In those cases where sanctioned countries have already landed their quotas for this year, the EC will reduce the allocation for another stock in the same geographical area.

Despite overfishing by these countries, sanctions fell by 22 per cent compared with last year.

Overall, they had done “a good job” in easing the pressure on Europe’s overfished waters, Damanaki said.

The EC estimates that three-quarters of European stocks are at risk and in May 2013, EU members agreed to end decades of depletion in order to boost diminishing stocks by up to 15 million tons by 2020.

Let’s go to England to see if we can find the answers there. Duh! Is that sensible? England and for that matter, Dublin in Ireland and Riga in Latvia are high priced, cool and often rainy.

Yet, disconcertingly these cities, which do compete with Spain for tourism, don’t seem to have an off season. Whenever I visit, whatever the weather, the bars and restaurants are busy.

In Bristol and Liverpool it is still

necessary to book a restaurant table, be prepared to wait or be turned away.

I will tell you what it is; they offer real variety. I swear there is a bigger and much more varied choice of restaurants in a moderately sized English city than there is along the entire Mediterranean coast of Spain.

Furthermore, the service is far better as is the quality of atmosphere and food.

Here, if you have seen any two restaurants you have seen them all. The choice is Blackpool type 1960s era tin-table cafés or Spanish ambience restaurants; take it or leave it. Karaoke musical fare is as tediously unimaginative as the fare on the plate. I cannot think of a single atmospheric exotic ambience wine bar that invites a smart dress code. In England I was spoiled for choice.

Spain’s public debt rockets to €1 trillion SPAIN’S public debt soared to a whopping €1 trillion.

According to data released by Banco de España, the Spanish public debt rocketed to just over €1 trillion or 98.4 per cent of GDP. The Government estimates the debt levels could increase before the end of the year to as much as 99.5 per cent of GDP. Spain’s debt has actually tripled since the outbreak of the economic crisis from 36.3 per cent of GDP in 2007 to almost 100 per cent in 2014. Most of the debt was incurred by the Central Government (84.5 per cent of Spain’s gross domestic product), followed by the Autonomous Communities (21.7 per cent of GDP) and the local councils (4 per cent).

These levels are some of the highest seen in modern times.

The ICP is an Interruptor de Control de Potencia, and it is required by law on all electrical installations as of two years ago. It protects your system from overuse and assures that you do not consume more electricity than you have contracted at any one time.

We suppose that the photograph showed that in fact you now have an ICP installed, but never informed the company. And, yes, Endesa has the right to put the surcharge on your bill. That is, unless you can prove that you were never notified.

While it’s a little more time consuming, we could in theory restrain from buying unnecessary treats throughout the day and then tot up how much we would have potentially spent.

Then, simply transfer this money into a savings account via internet banking.

Lefties leftovers to be Inditex main course INDITEX, whose Zara brand made Amancio Ortega the world’s third-richest man, is going online with Lefties.

This is Inditex’s low-cost range of Zara models left over from the previous season.

It is already present in 100 shops in Spain and Portugal and the group plans to take on H & M and Primark by launching Lefties as a label in its own right, with its own collection and a new image.

Unavailable online until now, it makes its internet debut tomorrow, August 22.

The company is committed to internet commerce, the current Inditex chairman Pablo Isla declared recently. This is an important part of its multi-channel strategy of coordinating increased retail space with

Scruffy beards that need a trim infecting society DURING the last five or 10 years we’ve witnessed a contagious fad amongst Spanish men of all ages. They grow beards so dishevelled and multi-coloured that many of these untidy bramble bushes resemble an explosion in a silo.

Beginning with many of our not-so-prestigious political leaders, with their whiskers of diverse shades of black, white, grey and brown, we now discover that the epidemic has spread.

It infects almost all Spanish males, young or old, the common denominator being that almost none of these recently-converted fadfollowers take the time or effort to trim or care for them.

Is it due to simple laziness or sloth?

I realise that this gripe of mine (and also my Valencian wife’s) is not one of our major problems in crisis-ridden Spain, but if we look around to observe the males of other Western nations, we readily notice that hardly any of them (young or old, famous or not) wear beards. Those few beards that exist are well-trimmed and of one colour.

In the dark AS a long term resident of Artola Alta I see the same circus every year.

Most of the time the main street is in total darkness and suddenly when the tourists are here and the IBI is due, the lights miraculously work perfectly.

Of course, with no lights in the street the area is a magnet for petty crime and break-ins are so frequent they have become commonplace.

The day after the direct debit has gone through your bank account the lights go off.

Now is that coincidence or is that perfect ‘Urban Planning?’

Think again I ASSUME that the article entitled ‘Pensioner saved from mountain’ was written by someone in their twenties.

‘Elderly’ is not a term to use for a person of 62 years of age, its meaning being someone who is approaching old age.

Most people in current employment in the UK, who I’m sure do not consider themselves elderly, will have to work until they’re 70 to receive their pensions. Expat retirees whose spending keeps Spain alive comprise 50 per cent of many local Spanish communities, so I would suggest that you reconsider the use of this adjective.

Workings out I WILL start by assuming that Leapy Lee classes all people from the Middle East as Arabs.

The main numerical system used in all mathematical exercises is based on the Arabic set of numerals, without which mathematics would be unintelligible and unuseable.

The previous most used numeral system was the Roman system in which mathematics is impossible. For example is X 10 or is it the symbol for multiplication?

Or simply try to add ii to ii on paper or without converting it to the Arabic numerals to complete the task.

Oil interests WE have to recognise that the Muslims have had good reasons to despise the West.

From the Crusades to the 20th century the Western world has treated them with disdain and contempt even after oil was discovered.

Thus the Americans and European powers have interfered time and time again with countries in the Middle East and in North Africa, wanting to install regimes that would be favourable to the West and to its oil interests.

It is a pity that the West did not have the self respect to go without the wretched oil from those areas of the world.

Sadly, Muslims can also see the decadence of the Western world, with its corruption, permissiveness, greed, immorality and appalling standards of dress.

They did have a high civilisation, notably in Moorish Spain, without which the European Renaissance might not have occurred.

After that, I agree with Leapy Lee: one cannot think of a single thing which they have produced or invented for the benefit, progress or happiness of mankind in the last 500 years.

Yet because of the oil money they can reap the benefits of all the tremendous achievements of the Western world (and Asia).

We should get out of all their countries.

No bargain I’M indifferent to Looky-Looky men and have never paid out for any of their wares, but have to comment on an assertion by last week’s Your Say correspondent, Richard Franklyn.

He appears to believe that they charge €15 for ‘perfect’ polo shirts that would otherwise cost €85. These vendors are peddling inferior copies blown together in sweatshops on the other side of the world. They have no claim to perfection and probably aren’t even worth €15 although possibly Richard Franklyn doesn’t know the difference.

AKE no mistake, war is, as we speak, licking its lips and savouring the taste of death and destruction at the very borders of the UK, and indeed a number of other European communities.

The enemy is everywhere. Never mind Iraq, Afghanistan and so forth, we need to look much closer to home for the true threat from Islamist militants. When some apparently slight and no doubt orchestrated incident sparks it off, rioting and war will erupt on the streets of the UK in a way unprecedented in our history, and to my mind it’s a great deal closer than we think. We should be preparing for it now.

We will of course ultimately win, but the cost will depend totally on the extent of our preparation. If we are ill-prepared and still allow human rights, political correctness and all that rubbish to influence our decisions, we will be condemning even more of our citizens to

Now that the first Modelo 720 (overseas assets reporting) forms have been submitted and processed, people have started hearing from the Spanish tax inspectors. The tax authorities have also recently announced an amnesty for undeclared foreign source pension income.

Modelo 720 Form 720 is not a tax form; it is simply a form on which a Spanish resident individual has to report their non-Spanish assets, and also their share of such assets held jointly.

However, it was always perceived by many commentators, including Blevins Franks, to be a way for the authorities to catch out people who are not reporting assets on their wealth tax returns. With asset reporting through Modelo 720, the scope for hiding assets and income from the taxman, which is tax evasion, has been very much reduced in Spain.

Most of these enquiries from the Spanish tax inspectors appear to be related to discrepancies between the assets an individual has reported on the Modelo 720 and the wealth tax return (or even the absence of a

wealth tax return for the relevant year). However, the tax inspectors have also looked into previous years in some cases.

For some people, it has been easy to respond to the inspector.

For example, one inspector asked the taxpayer about previous years, only to find out that the individual concerned was not resident in Spain at that time.

However, this highlights the

importance of keeping records (including of where you were living and when), and declaring assets accurately and appropriately.

Even people who had no wealth taxes to pay in previous years may still have to put up with the inconvenience of the enquiry, not to mention the expenses - potential legal and accountancy fees, translation fees etc. - as well as the time involved. For those who are caught out not declaring assets, there can be unpaid tax, penalties and interest due, not to mention tax on income generated by the undeclared assets (and penalties and interest on that). It can be a very unsettling experience.

There are ways that you can legally minimise income and wealth taxes, and while this will mean that people still have to make the correct declarations, they will have peace of mind that they are declaring correctly, and do not have anything to fear from the taxman. As we have always

recommended, only use legitimate means of limiting your tax liabilities, through tailored specialised advice.

Amnesty on undeclared foreign pension income On 1st August, the Spanish tax authorities announced that an amnesty will be introduced for residents of Spain who are paid a pension income from abroad. It will run for a period of six months, starting January 2015.

Exchange of information between countries has been strengthening over recent years.

The local authorities have been receiving data on their taxpayers, and have discovered that a substantial number of Spanish tax residents have not declared pension income that is taxable under the terms of the double tax treaties. The Hacienda has recently opened nearly 28,000 enquiries into expatriates’ tax returns.

During the six month amnesty period, affected taxpayers may

submit additional self-assessment returns for the previous four tax years. Under the provisions of the draft legislation, any penalties and surcharges would be waived but the income tax on the undeclared pension income and related interest would still be payable.

Normally an amnesty is followed up by tightening of the tax rules.

This is therefore an opportunity for expatriates to check that they have been declaring their pension income according to the Spanish tax legislation, and to regularise their tax affairs if necessary.

British expatriates need to understand both the UK and Spanish tax rules for their UK pensions, and the interaction between them. Seek specialist advice.

SHISEIDO, Japan’s most famous cosmetic brand, has launched a new product on the European market, Ultimune: power infusing concentrate, but what is it composed of and how good is it?

The main ingredients, as stated on the packaging, are Damascus rose oil, Ginko Biloba, Perilla frutescens (similar to nettles), Thymus Serpyllium (of the thyme family) and vitamin E - as well as a lot of alcohol.

The thymus helps skin to hydrate and is a natural disinfectant, the perilla can have anti-inflammatory properties and the ginko is a topical anti-oxidant - but the fact remains that there is nothing very new here and the main ingredient seems to be alcohol.

The manufacturers are recommending that Ultimune be used before a serum as a sort of preparatory serum which leaves users with the question of why bother?

CORN SYRUP: Could affect your metabolism.

Avoid corn syrup, it could be very bad for your health CORN syrup is high in fructose and one of those ingredients which is slowly creeping into almost everything on the supermarket shelves which is making it very difficult to avoid but, for health reasons, it really must be avoided.

Corn syrup is marketed as a natural ingredient, which it is, and this leads people to believe it has no health

hazards when, in reality, it is much worse for humans than the sugar which it is replacing.

In a study published in 2013 researchers concluded that countries which had allowed this syrup to be used freely in all products had a higher incidence of diabetes (around 20 per cent more) than countries which controlled its

availability.

In another study six out of 10 animals which were fed on corn syrup developed liver cancer within the first few months of eating it.

Apartment terraces need attention to be attractive Dick Handscombe

ELL at last we have a cool day and it’s been a joy to do some midday tidying up in the garden and on ground level and first floor terraces. Also this morning it was noticeable, in town, that more people were actively caring for plants on apartment terraces and adding various artefacts to bare walls, to make the terraces more attractive outdoor living spaces.

Yet it is still amazing that probably 80 per cent of apartment terraces are totally underutilised for outdoor living.

In the bible for apartment dwellers ‘Apartment gardening Mediterranean style’ we include check lists of the

BRIGHT TERRACES: A colourful eating place. main tasks organised into six groups.

There are flowering plants, evergreen plants, herbs, fruit growing, vegetable growing and other. For instance the top nine tasks for late summer are as follows.

1. Keep up the daily watering and every few days mist spray the leaves.

2. Regularly deadhead flowering plants.

3. Keep plants in shape by pruning straggly growth.

4. If herb plants grow large, trim off the excess

growth and hang up the prunings as bunches.

5. As the days shorten and become a few degrees cooler, cut back the extent of watering to avoid the rotting of trunks and roots.

6. Take cuttings of perennials and succulents to produce new plants.

7. Prune fruit trees and vines to shape.

8. Lightly dust the leaves and fruit of fruit vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, beans and courgettes etc.) to reduce the chance of mildew.

9. Spray fruit trees monthly with a neem (3-5 ml per litre) and propolis (3-5 ml per litre) water spray against possible insect and fungal spore attacks.

There are four possible designs for apartment terraces shown in our book.

The first is a colourful and restful eating terrace. A wide variety of artefacts are used as well as plants. The awning protects plants from the low winter sun more than summer sun.

The second is a smallish succulent surrounded terrace with an awning that can be opened out which is great for enjoying the sun and evening eating with any chairs folded up and a table opened up.

Thirdly a patio in the sky, surrounded by neighbouring apartments with undeveloped terraces, creates all year round colourful perfumed greenery.

The fourth is a productive one square metre terrace.

Fifteen varieties of vegetables could be harvested at the same time.

In Japan it is considered rude for a guest to pour himself or herself a drink. Instead of grabbing the bottle and helping yourself to the sake, wait for your drinking partner to pour

When attending a social gathering or an elegant banquet, do not ever take a sip until every single guest has a glass, raises it and says kampai!

(Japanese for cheers).

It is very common for Japanese people to share dishes of food at the table instead of serving each guest his or her own individual dish.

Westerners may find this unusual and awkward at first but remember that

it is a different culture.

When sharing dishes with other people at the table, move part of the food onto your own plate with the opposite end of the chopsticks.

After you are done eating, move all your dishes to the position they were before you started and do not forget to put the chopsticks back into their paper slip.

HELLO and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes.

From last week we have now got the simple truth about exactly what an Operating System is, cleared up. I promised that we would have a little bit of history to help understand how we have got to the GUI. As promised, the acronym GUI stands for Graphical User Interface and is what you see when your Operating System is up and running, but how did we get to it? I can safely say Magick (Crowley’s spelling) has nothing to do with it. It has evolved (bible readers insulted tick) from handwritten,

to typeset (printed) then to an electronic version of typeset.

For many years the ‘green screen’ which was actually black with green letters appearing as you typed, was the de-facto standard.

That was until the Psychologists, who just can’t leave anything alone with their insatiable curiosity and forward thinking, turned their attention to how we interact with our environment.

Studies in Ergonomics (which resulted in the chair that I’m sat in, typing), spacial awareness and a multitude of other disciplines have resulted in an understanding of our environmental interactions and caused someone to ask the question “How can we make working on a

computer easier?”

Through these studies it was shown that humankind reacts best to symbols (why do you understand roadsigns almost instinctively?) rather than use the complex system that we call ‘language.’ ‘Icon,’ from Greek ‘eikon’ meaning ‘likeness, image, portrait’ is an image to which we can attach a thought or more accurately a series of images that allow us to complete a given task.

So, the result of that question and studies shaped what you see when you turn on your computer!

HAA seeks new president and treasurer - interested?

HELPING ANIMALS ALMANZORA (HAA) is undergoing some structural changes this year, and as such is seeking a couple of enthusiastic people for key roles.

Vice president Tracy Wood is ready to launch a new chapter of her life by moving back to the UK at the end of the summer.

Terry Reid the president is retiring, and the treasurer is also on the move.

Tracy’s vice president position has already been filled by the new owner of Woodhouse Kennels, James. However, the other two positions still need to be filled as quickly as possible. Is this something that interests you?

800 school places filled MORE than 800 places have been filled in primary schools in Almeria ready for the new school year.

The schools in Albox, Benahadux, Huercal de Almeria, Pechina, Turre, Viator are just some of the 10 primary schools that have completed their registrations with more than 800 new registrations for the new year, an increase on figures for 2013.

The schools are managed by the Saliente association which is incorporating some new themes for 2014 including a programme which keeps families informed about their children in real time.

The association has also introduced English learning in the first and second years in addition to the third.

Spain’s low prices attracts home buyers from all over SPAIN’S low property prices are attracting investors from all over the world.

While there is no denying that France had long been a popular port of call for people looking for a European hideout, the sharp decrease in real estate prices in Spain by as much as 60 per cent continues to woo potential home buyers and agents report the number of inquiries, especially from foreigners, have tripled.

There are other reasons explaining the recent increase of foreigners’

Even though most Spanish real-estate agents are likely to say prices will soon start to pick up because of the large number of foreign buyers, there are still some bargains out there, especially when it comes to bank repossession properties. For instance, the price of a 231sqm fourbedroom and threebathroom property in Marbella was recently reduced from €461,735 to €348,500, with a small 25sqm apartment there costing merely €33,000.

It would be a good idea to read the fine print though when buying a property in Spain.

According to Barcelona agents, buyers investing in residential property are required to pay a Spanish transfer tax of between 8 and 10 per cent of the price tag, depending on where the property is, and some notary and land registry fees may apply.

SEAT sales continue their upward trend. The brand ended the first half of 2014 with 200,200 vehicles delivered, 9.9 per cent more than in the first half of 2013 (182,200).

SEAT has achieved its best result of the past six years, exceeding the figure of 200,000 units delivered for the first half of a year since the beginning of the economic crisis in 2008.

Sales of the Leon have provided the key to this growth.

This compact car has seen its sales increase by 62.3 per cent, totalling 78,600 vehicles, 30,200 more than for the first half 2013 (48,400). Sharing costs is the way forward AS the sheer expense of car development and manufacture keeps spiralling upwards sharing costs and overheads (known as synergies) between major manufacturers is seen by many as the way forward.

Leading the way is the Renault-Nissan Alliance which posted record synergies of €2.87 billion in 2013, up from €2.69 billion the previous year.

Hole in One for Keith KEITH RYDER had a day to remember at Aguilon, not only winning the event with a score of 37 points but also achieving that rarest of golfing feats a Hole In One! Keith’s ace came at the 14th hole, and was a cause for celebration not only for himself but also all the other 33 Forum Golf Society members playing in the individual stableford competition as they were all able to celebrate with him with a drink afterwards paid for by the society.

Close calls CORTIJO GRANDE golf members had their first week away from home at Marina Golf, with the course is in good condition.

Last Wednesday their winner with 35 points was John Geaves, second with 34 was Bob Winter and third with 31 John Dempster.

On Sunday there was another close call with the winner with 37 points John Hart and second on countback John Dempster from Mike Picken both with 35 points.

Feeling the heat at Aguilon Golf

WITH temperatures apporaching 40°C, the 19th Hole’s 11am tee time was changed to 8.10am in an effort to get round the Aguilon Course whilst the temperature was more manageable for their Monthly Medal round.

Darren Banks was the star of the Men’s Medal, with a net 73 from a rejuvenated Terry Caddick on 75 just pipping Nick

Pogson into third place with 77. Darren also lifted two nearest the pins on hole eight and 12 and converted to a two on the difficult 12th hole.

Zeta Denyer, playing a steady round, took the Ladies Medal with a net 79 ahead of Chris Dow (33).

It was a good day’s golf with good and bad scores, but a nice welcome back at La Vida for nibbles and refreshments.

The 19th Hole G/S are arranging weekly games at courses in the area, with their home course, played fortnightly, being Aguilon.

Consistency pays off THE individual competition at Marina Phoenix saw Tony Cordingley’s consistency pay off as he won the men’s division with 36 points.

John Lally (35) was second and Brian Couper (33) third. The ladies division was a success for Rosalie Fardon (34) with Isobel Jones second and Margaret Budd third.

The team game, on Thursday, was a threeball Texas Scramble. The winning team of Antonio Ubeda, Marcos Caparros and Jim Budd returned a card with 15 pars and three birdies for a total 62.1. Second were father and son Alex and Sean Elder, with Brian Couper on 65.8, followed by Isobel Jones, Hylton

Smith and Brian Mayhew 67.4. There were nearest the pin prizes for Rosalie Fardon and Nigel Greenwood.
