Allianz Global Assistance ran a competition this year to find the most beautiful areas in the country.

Everything was considered, from the calm waters of the Valencian Albufera to the rush of Rio Tinto, the volcanic splendour of Lanzarote’s Parque de Timanfaya and the majesty of Mount Teide in Tenerife.

Rivers, beaches, caves, marshes... all manner of landscapes were examined before a shortlist of 20

locations was selected.

The finalist areas were all visited by explorer Mar Morales, photographer Elssie Ansareo, community manager at Allianz Global Assistance Alberto Peñalba and photographer Javer Gil. The seven eventual winners were chosen according to their popularity on social networking websites, with around 80,000

Facebook likes and 5,000 Tweets.

Aside from Cabo de Gata, the other winners were Gaztelugatxe in Bizkaia, which took first place; Parque Natural de Somiedo in Asturias, in second place; Las Medulas in Leon; Parque Natural de Las Lagunas de Ruidera in Castilla-La Mancha; Fuente Dé in Cantabria, and A Praia das Catedrais in Lugo.

LAZY DAYS: Subsidised day trips for Tabernas residents.

Beach trips are a hit in Tabernas

TABERNAS residents have been given a fantastic opportunity to get to the beach at seriously low prices. The project is being subsidised mainly by the town council.

On Sunday, more than 100 people grabbed their towels and swimming costumes and headed by bus from the town of Tabernas to the Mario Water Park at Roquetas de Mar. Two 54-seater buses were utilised for the day trip, and all agreed it was a great idea,

enabling many to enjoy a day at the seaside, a trip that previously had proved very difficult.

The next trip is scheduled for August 3, to Playa de Aguilas in Murcia. Again, the cost for Tabernas residents is just €2. A week later and the destination changes again with the target being Nerja (Malaga) but still with the same low price of €2 per ticket.

The project is already being hailed a big success by the town’s residents.

Erasmus scholarship call HUERCAL OVERA has announced the town’s continuation of support for its residents with a new call for the Erasmus Scholarship aimed at students in the town.

Councillor for Culture, Antonio Lazaro, said that “once again the government has answered the call of its students to help them with support. This is with the Erasmus Scholarship.

“This initiative has been successful in previous years and we remain committed to the education of our youth.”

Applicants must be college students, be registered in the municipality for at least eight years - not necessarily consecutively - and have received aid previously. Application with documentation is to be presented

to the Registro General at the town hall by September 30. The total budget is €6,000 to be divided amongst successful applicants, with a maximum of €1,000 per student.

The initiative is being coordinated by the town hall in Huercal Overa to aid education and business, and is now in its second year.

N the first Sunday of August, the small town of Catoira in Galicia celebrates the unusual festival of the Romeria Vikinga, in which the locals all dress up as either Viking warriors or townspeople of the era, and do battle.

The spectacular re-enactment of the Viking invasions of a thousand years ago has been going on in the town since 1960.

Thousands of tourists, both national and international, will descend on the town to watch this entertaining local fiesta, which has been declared of international interest.

The event kicks off at around 10am with several confrontations between the townspeople and small groups of marauders; these battles and fights take

The most impressive moment of the reenactment is when the Viking ships arrive en masse on the beaches and a huge battle ensues during which all the participants and audience members usually get soaked in copious amounts of wine.

After the battle, the festivities move back into the town for a ninth-century-inspired feast and musical accompaniment of the time, along with many other Viking-inspired activities.

August tours for Almeria ALMERIA’S Department of Tourism has announced six new tours for the city as part of the capital’s millenium celebrations.

Tomorrow (Friday) August 1 offers a walk through the historic centre to learn about key buildings and their place in the growth of the city.

It departs from Plaza Vieja at 10am and costs €2.

Later in the evening a tour is on the theme of theatre.

Guided by actors playing historical figures from Almeria, it looks at Almeria in a more creative way. The

tour starts at 8pm in Plaza Vieja and costs €4.

Saturday August 2 is back to history with a focus on legends and folklore. It leaves at 10am and costs €2. At noon, the tour turns to gourmet with a tour of gastronomy in the city, focusing on Mercado Central. The cost is €2 On Sunday August 3, San Cristobal is the subject matter with a tour around the older parts of the city,

including the Alcazaba. The tour will take you to the San Cristobal monument with spectacular views across the city and the sea.

The tour starts at 10am and costs €2. The final tour is at noon on Sunday and costs €2, departing from Plaza Vieja. This looks at the love of Almeria and why visitors love the city and the province.

SAN JUAN DE LOS TERREROS has been issued an ‘Excellent’ rating across all of its beaches by the Ministry of Health of Andalucia.

New jobs INVESTMENT into preventing forest fires by the Environment and Planning Department of Andalucia has resulted in 1,500 new jobs.

Volunteer divers now wanted AUGUST 1 sees the opening for applications from divers who would like to volunteer as part of the sampling programme Posidonia.

Applications should be made to the Ministry of Environment at the Junta de Andalucia (regional government). All volunteers should have a personal or professional certificate for diving, have a level of diving experience and be of legal age. Diving begins in the second half of September.

Since 2012, almost 150 volunteers have participated in the Posidonia project which takes samples from the sea grass meadows off the Almeria coast.

Approximately 70 people are expected to get involved this year. The campaign, spearheaded by the Ministry of Environment, collects data to monitor the state of conservation of threatened and endemic marina plants in the Mediterranean.

Harriers have a hashing time in Oria THE hashing group all gathered at the petrol station in Oria for the usual coffee and a natter before the walking and running, but were almost outnumbered by their holiday visitors all keen to give the hash a go.

A short drive took everyone down to Oria Plaza where they gathered for the pre-run circle in the shade as the temperature was already in the mid thirties. The Hares explained the way marks and off they went to the usual sound of whistles and shouts of “On-On!” The walkers progressed through the town, following the shade where they could; down lanes and alleys and across the lower levels where they viewed the landscape of arable land which the tour leader explained had originally been cultivated by Moors

After some welcome drinks, they continued past the main church which is spectacular and well worth a visit. Then it was back down to the plaza and more refreshments alongside the initiation of a new hashing group member.

Finally, it was back into the cars for a quick drive through the town to Bar Pepe for tapas and yet more drinks, along with good conversation and much laughter.

The Indalo Hash House Harriers meet twice a month for walking, running and lots of laughter. Everyone is welcome, regardless of fitness levels, as there are two routes available.

Let there be light, but then there wasn’t!

AFTER overcoming the bureaucratic hurdles over recent weeks which forced the closure of the tourist office in Las Salinas church, the office has hit another barrier, potentially causing it to have to close all week.

Euro Weekly News reported three weeks ago that the tourist office located in the crypt of Las Salinas church in Cabo de Gata had been forced to close. The reasons given were the lack of a telephone line, and inadequate space of just 1.2 metres square.

Mayor of Almeria, Luis Rodriquez-Comendador, and his team worked to amend the situation and the office was reopened.

This week, however, it seemed that the office would be closed once

Due to its location within the building, the office cannot function without light. The lack of power to the entire building also means that the fan and water cooler would not work, making it unbearably hot. Despite

repeated attempts by the Councillor for Tourism, Juan Jose Alonso, to contact the priest, they have so far been unsuccessful. The priest is the only person with a key so that the power can be switched back on again.

The tourist office originally opened in 2012 as part of an agreement between the Bishop of Almeria, Adolfo Gonzalez Montes, and the Mayor of Almeria.

The agreement allowed the tourist board to use of the office for the next 10 years. In return, the city council donated €100,000 towards the restoration work on the church, predominantly used to install solar panelling, providing power to the church, ironically, which cost a total of €400,000.

Man found dead in El Ejido A MAN was found dead in an irrigation water deposit at Paraje de la Loma at Las Paternoster Daza in the municipality of El Ejido. It is suspected he drowned.

Emergency services were alerted on Saturday evening when his partner, with whom he shared a house, reported him missing since that morning.

The man had reportedly gone to collect some water but there had been no contact from him since.

The fire department, health services, Guardia Civil and National Police began a search, but it was the Special Underwater Group (GEAS), a division of the Guardia Civil, who discovered the body face down in the water.

The deceased’s name will not be revealed until his relatives have been contacted.

Algarrobicos alternative?

MAYOR of Carboneras, Salvador Hernandez, has suggested that a better use for the illegal Algarrobico hotel would be to redesign it as a home for the elderly.

Hernandez said the building should be used to create wealth and employment instead of spending more millions to tear it down.

He remarked: “It would be less harmful and less of a problem to Almeria, to Andalucia and, dare I say, Spain.

“Changing the site back to its natural state is almost impossible,” continued Hernandez to journalists this week. He pointed out that if the Andalucian court ordered the reassessment of the licence, reversing the judgement of 2008, they could ‘terminate the hotel and make it

available to the public’.

“The ball is in their court,” said Hernandez, adding: “And they will indicate the next steps.

The best thing that can happen is to open either as a hotel, or as a home for the elderly.”

The mayor has appealed for the right decision to be made, to reject the demolition of the hotel, “which represents a cost of millions of euros to tear down rather than build together to create wealth and employment, while always respecting the environment. You have to make it compatible, bet on sustainable development, showing respect to plants and animals of the natural park of Cabo de Gata, but also showing respect to human and social development.”

Thirsty trees VOLUNTEERS have carried more than 700 litres of water up to thirsty trees in Enix that were planted as a project back in 2006.

The volunteers carry out the project every summer.

The event was organised by the Department of Sports in the town.

Cesar Maldonado on in Aguadulce CESAR MALDONADO, an Almeria guitarist born in 1979, treated audiences to an open air concert at the weekend as part of the ‘Pie de Calle’ series of events in the area.

Maldonado performed using just his voice and his acoustic guitar. He composes all his own songs, and he performed a number of those. No stranger to public performances, Maldonado gave his first concert aged 17. Since then he has performed all over Spain and France and won a number of prestigious awards including ‘Best Song’ at the International Songwriters’ Festival in Granada, which he won twice.

Maldonado says he is influenced by such songwriters like Serrat, Silvio Rodriguez and Milanes. His music focuses on everyday things and events, bringing a new magic and dimension to things we all take for granted.

Maldonado is currently touring, promoting his first album, El Zaguan, which was released in the spring of 2013.

Ragol suspends all hunting after poisoned foxes found RAGOL’S Department for the Environment and Spatial Planning has suspended all hunting within 144 of the existing 10,236 acres in Ragol.

The suspension has been adopted after finding the bodies of two foxes. The foxes were taken to the Centre for Analysis and

Diagnosis of Wildlife at the Ministry of Environment where it was discovered they had died after eating poisoned bait.

The two animals were discovered by Environmental Agents in Rambla Zaino, while they were carrying out their routine activities.

Following protocol, the animals were sent for analysis. The analysis confirmed the existence of brodifacoum and bromadioline, rodent poisons ranked by the World Health Organisation as “extremely toxic.”

The substances are highly dangerous to humans, and their introduction into the ecological system poses a

serious risk to human health, not only by its toxic presence, but also for the possibility of being incorporated into the food chain across species as wild boar and rabbits.

Environmental agents have not ruled out the possibility that more animals may have died in the area from poisoning.

This is not the first time that an area has been cordoned off from hunting.

In March this year the hunting use on a private reserve located between Arboleas and Zurgena was suspended after the discovery of a fox corpse, known to have died from ingesting bait poisoned with pesticides.

PSOE warns of ‘brutal’ cuts

ALMERIA’S Socialist party (PSOE) has lashed out at the package of cuts that the national government has announced.

These include the introduction of co-payment for medical appointments, the

dispensing of prescriptions and in vitro fertilisation as well as increasing prescription charges.

Representatives of the PSOE, Juan Carlos Perez Navas and Grace Fernandez, described the

proposals as ‘brutal and unfair’.

Navas detailed the new ‘letter of cuts’ that the government has proposed to communities and said they “have chosen what is best for them,” and

described the range of cuts as a “new twist to the PP model which is acting perversely. This approach by the PP government shows they are choosing regions in which to apply the cuts to counteract

reducing demand for services, so only those that can afford them can use them. The increases mention a 10 per cent rise in fees for prescription medicines, meaning employed people would pay 60 per cent of the cost and pensioners would pay 20 per cent.”

Fernandez went on to criticise the government for allowing tax relief for users of private healthcare while penalising those with fewer resources.

TRIBUTE: Honouring the women of yesteryear.

Women praised HUERCAL OVERA Women’s Association, sponsored by the Andalucian Institute for Women and the Council of Almeria, have released ‘Otro dia Vendra’ (Another Day Will Come) in book and DVD formats.

Leading the project is the Women’s Association of Sociocultural Overa, in collaboration with women’s groups Guadamaina, Popular, Coalmama and Encajeras (lacemakers) as well as a group of young volunteers and the Centre for Women.

The aim of the project is to increase awareness of the contributions of older women. The women, born between the late 1920s and the 1930s, lived during a time of change and improvements to the status of women. The ‘nameless women’ have contributed to the fight for equal rights. They made history by introducing changes for their own futures and those

of their daughters.

The groups wanted to raise awareness of these women, to educate and pay tribute to lives full of experiences of struggle and lives that despite their struggles, epitomised the book’s title, ‘Another Day Will Come’.

The presentation ceremony was attended by the mayor of Huercal Overa, Domingo Fernandez, the provincial deputy for equality, Elisa Fernandez, the director of the Andalucian Institute for Women, Francisca Serrana, and representatives from the local government team.

The mayor paid respect to the work of these women in history, including women’s groups, and made special mention of the fighting women who worked tirelessly to bring about evolution of the people.

Provincial funds for Cuevas and Villaricos GABRIEL AMAT, from the provincial government of Almeria, visited Cuevas del Almanzora this week.

He was in the area to sign funding agreements for the province to the value of €420,000, to improve areas in Cuevas del Almanzora and Villaricos.

In total, eight areas have been allocated funds: Plaza del Hospital in Cuevas del Almanzora, Calle San Anton and Calle Cervantes will see pavements upgraded.

Calles Aire, Entinas and San Pedro in Cuevas will also have pavements widened and repaired.

Barrio Bravo, Calles San Amaro and Esperanza will

be connected to Barrio Bravo.

Very close to the castle in Cuevas del Almanzora is a badly damaged slope. The streets on this hill will be repaired.

Finally, in Cuevas del Almanzora, on the road which leads to the dam, is the INE building. The surrounding area currently has no pavements or any form of easy access for disabled persons so ramps will be installed.

In Villaricos, basic services will be provided to Urbanizacion la Sirena.

Also in Villaricos, the AL1065 close to the school is underdeveloped and currently used for parking

on market day. This situation will be addressed.

Next to the plaza in the centre of Villaricos is a street which currently does not allow vehicles, so some reorganisation is planned.

Amat has asked the mayor to act on these improvements as soon as possible so that the residents and visitors of Cuevas del Almanzora and Villaricos can enjoy much improved services as soon as possible.

Amat concluded: “These development works are essential to the Cuevas municipalities because they improve upon the basic services that residents currently receive.”

Celebrities join in saving the Arctic SPANISH celebrities from the worlds of music, film, sports and fashion have all got together to join a Greenpeace campaign to save the Arctic.

Alejandro Sanz, Malu, Alex Gonzalez, Ariel Rot and many other famous faces have heeded the warning from Greenpeace about the melting polar ice caps and posed for a publicity session wearing the campaign t-shirt after which they all signed the petition to create a sanctuary which would protect the threatened area.

A Greenpeace spokesperson has commented that many countries are seeing the polar ice melt as an opportunity to enter the area and search for oil and other natural resources which would destroy the fragile environment.

The Greenpeace petition makes special mention of the activities which they see as destructive and among these are industrial fishing and oil exploration.

HOLIDAYMAKERS in Spain are being told to err on the side of caution because according to a recent poll carried out by AA Travel Insurance they are the most likely to be robbed while soaking up the sun, while holidaymakers in France and Italy have more chance of being pickpocketed, studies reveal.

The poll shows that 81 out of 3,000 people had possessions stolen while holidaying in Spain. More than half of the people that were asked believed they were singled out because they looked like a tourist.

Pickpocketing came in as the most common form of robbery, with one in six being targeted on public transport.

Not everyone in Spain agrees with proposed university reform measures SOME of Spain’s autonomous communities are set against reforms to bring in three-year university degrees.

Asturias and the Basque Country strongly disagree with a royal decree allowing Spanish students to

complete a degree in three years (180 credits), said Education Minister Jose Ignacio Wert after a meeting with representatives of Spain’s autonomous communities to analyse the university reform.

“There were some disagreements and Asturias and the Basque Country are opposed to the idea,” said Wert.

He does not rule out including financing and governance to the proposed university reform.

Asturias and the Basque Country argue that threeyear university degrees would increase costs for students.

In addition, they are opposed to Spanish universities having two different systems, namely

four-year bachelor’s degrees with a one-year master’s and three-year bachelor’s degrees with two-year master’s.

A welcome home party for the pilgrims

By Marian May EILEEN, Sheila and Jackie, three Pilgrims from Bedar, are due to make a homecoming tomorrow.

The trio have been walking the Camino de Santiago, The Way of St James.

They began their journey together on Saturday July 12, when they met in Murcia, taking the bus to Pamplona and then taxi to their starting point of Roncesvalles, on the Spanish side of the Pyrenees, arriving on the Sunday.

The Monday was their first day walking six hours from Roncesvalles to their first stop at Zubiri. Each day they managed to reach each of their stops and only once did they arrive to find all the beds taken in the Alberque.

On day six they reached Logroño in the Rioja region of Spain and then rested on a bus which took them to Burgos, a stretch of the Camino they had walked over five days last year. This short respite was very welcome as Jackie suffered with blisters due to her

shoes breaking. Both Jackie and Sheila were suffering with their feet during the walk, but neither intended to give up despite the pain they were in. They have both had good care and medical treatment to help them continue.

The women have sent accounts of their journey, which at times has been very gruelling. However they have passed through beautiful countryside, fields of sunflowers, enjoyed Estrella beer, Rioja and Navarra wines in the areas that they come from and shared a

memorable experience together.

On Monday they arrived at León, the end of this pilgrimage, having walked a total of 317.10 kilometres.

They have funded this journey themselves as well as using it as a fundraiser for the village of Bedar where they live. All donated monies will be presented to the Bedar band in order that they can buy instruments and uniforms for the new young members.

A pilgrims welcome home party is planned for tomorrow in Bedar at 4pm, to celebrate their return.

The elderly at a higher risk of dehydration SENIOR CITIZENS are at a higher risk of dehydration due to their diminished thirst sensation.

In most people over 50, the body’s sensation of thirst naturally dwindles and simply continues declining with age. This may be one of the reasons why many senior citizens do not drink enough water every day, they just cannot seem to get thirsty. However, the truth is that if they do not receive enough fluids, dehydration can quickly set in.

In general terms, people who do not drink enough water may end up suffering from confusion, constipation, muscle weakness, muscle cramps, dry skin, headache, light-headedness and loss of appetite.

The Age & Life Foundation says senior citizens should drink between six and eight glasses of liquid a day - especially during the summer - even when they are not thirsty. They also recommend eating foods with high water content, including cantaloupe, watermelon, strawberries, grapefruit, pineapple, zucchini, radish, celery, green cabbage and spinach.

Police break up money laundering gang NATIONAL POLICE have detained 84 members of a money laundering gang which was responsible for ‘cleaning up more than €11.5 million which they got through the ‘Nigerian letter’ scam.

The investigation started in 2012 when the police became aware of a gang, located principally in Malaga, Valencia and Madrid, which was receiving cash made in the Nigerian letter scams and was sending the cash on to Nigeria.

Complaints had come in to the National Police lines from all over the world stating that the I.P. addresses on the emails were located in Malaga and Valencia, as well as other Spanish

cities, and the e-mails contained fraudulent information and made fraudulent claims which were considered illegal in the countries where the complaints originated.

Officers have investigated more than 200 locutorios (cheap rate phone call centres) which are managed by the gang and which are used to launder the cash as well as send out the thousands of e-mails

designed to defraud the more innocent recipients.

More than 51 searches have been made and officers have confiscated around €56,000 in cash, 50 computers, 27 smart phones as well as many fake passports and identity cards.

Police calculate that, in the time they have been operating, the gang could have made as much as €20 million from

the letter scam: this is when they send letters to the general public asking them for help to get funds out of the country in exchange for a percentage - but the victims never get a percentage, just money taken out of their accounts.

Santiago train driver apologises FRANCISCO JOSE GARZON AMO, the driver of the tragic Santiago train, has finally apologised for his role in the crash which claimed 79 lives one year ago.

“I feel a great deal of pain and sorrow,” he wrote in the letter published in the daily newspaper, La Voz de Galicia.

“It distresses me to think of what words I can say, if they will be adequate, if what I say could bother you. All I can do is ask for forgiveness,” he explained in his open letter.

“In reality I don’t know if what I say or feel could provide you with some relief from your tremendous pain,” Garzon added.

“You don’t know how much I would give for that.

The harm you have suffered is so great.”

The train was going 179 kilometres per hour (110 mph), which was over twice the speed limit, on a tricky bend, when it flew off the tracks and smashed into a wall.

He has been charged with 79 counts of reckless homicide, but is currently a free man under court supervision while an investigation continues.

Adoption blocked at the last minute TWO Spanish couples are trapped in Ethiopia in the middle of an adoption process and asking for help from the Ministry of the Exterior.

The two couples, Sonia and Ruben, and Silvia and Jeronimo, arrived in Ethiopia in March to finalise the adoption process of two children (one per couple); they have been working towards

this for four years.

The Ethiopian authorities have blocked the process at the last minute due, they say, to discrepancies between the province, where the orphanage is located, and the central ministry.

The two families are requesting that the Spanish Ministry of the Exterior take action to help them with this situation. “We are

fighting to keep them out of the orphanage,” claim the adoptive parents.

The two families landed on Ethiopian soil on March 31 and more than 120 days later they are still fighting for something that they thought was a ‘done deal’, which is why they now need the intervention of the government to resolve the situation. One of the

SPAIN is taking advantage of a legal loophole which allows hundreds of private marihuana smoking clubs to serve cannabis to members.

Dealing cannabis in Spain is illegal but under Spanish Law growing and private consumption are not penalised. However, the authorities are getting concerned as more than 700 of these private smoking clubs are springing up all over the country, with the majority of them situated in Barcelona.

Antoni Mateu, Head of Public Health for the Catalonia regional government, stated that the clubs were spreading so quickly because of the lack of rules and regulation. Others believe the rapid increase in smoking clubs is a good thing.

Bruce resting LEGENDARY rock star, Bruce Springsteen, has being holidaying with his wife, Patti Scialfa, in Spain.

Bruce could be seen on the beach on the Baleraic island of Formentera, but the singer didn’t seem as if he liked to relax too much. While Patti caught the sun, Bruce exercised, swam and paddle boarded, which is one of his favourite hobbies.

The father of three is really in shape and looked more like an athlete than a 64-year-old man.

Earlier, Bruce and Patti were seen stepping off a speed boat and onto a yacht to pass away a few hours with friends. Ever active, Bruce took control of the steering and navigation of the vessel.

Bruce last performed in Spain with his world famous E Street Band at the El Molinon Stadium in Gijon, in June last year.

He has certainly earned a rest after touring South Africa, the US, Australia and New Zealand this year. He has no future confirmed dates.

Procession of black gowns in favour of free justice for all MORE than 1,000 lawyers took to the streets of Madrid to protest against the government’s new justice law.

Dressed in their traditional black gowns the procession of lawyers was led by the senior members of the official college of law and representatives from all 83 colleges of law. The march went from the Madrid Law College and stopped traffic on Cibeles Square for half an hour.

When the protest was over Carlos Carnicer, head of the general assembly of lawyers, commented that they had taken this action in order to bring attention to the matter of a lawyer’s right to defend a client even if they cannot pay.

The lawyers associations claim that the new law endangers the 42,500 public defenders that currently defend those who cannot afford a private lawyer. The government has cut the budget for these ‘free’ defences by

€1.9 million for mobile phones THE Spanish Government, which is making huge cutbacks to all other areas, is to spend €1.4 million on renovating the mobile phone and ADSL contracts for its delegates.

Congress has put the service out to public tender and, initially, the contract will last until 2016, which could mean a total expenditure of €1.9 million.

The government will also be putting out to tender the contract for the supply of diesel and petrol to the delegates’ official cars.

According to a spokesperson, the objective is to fix the costs for the foreseeable future in the areas of communications and transport.

The company with the winning bid for the contract will have to provide a guaranteed service, and maintenance, to 650 lines, which will be broken down into 425 top-of-the-range smart phones and 225 basic smartphones as well as providing all the backup materials like chargers and extra SIM cards.

At the end of the contract the mobiles will have to be ‘freed’ and will pass to being owned by Congress.

As far as the ADSL lines go, they will have to provide more than 350 lines dotted around the whole of Spain as well as any necessary maintenance.

The budget for the petrol and diesel contract will not go above €66,550 including IVA, according to government sources.

An estimated 28 million people travelled to Spain between January and June, which represents a 7.3 per cent increase compared to the same six-month period in 2013, as reported in a survey made public by the Industry, Energy and Tourism Ministry.

Sixteenth edition of ‘Balconades’ in Altea old quarter THE streets of Altea’s old quarter have again become an impromptu art gallery.

Potential child care risks for the elderly SPANISH grandparents play an important role in the lives of their grandchildren.

According to the Spanish Geriatrics and Gerontology Society (SEGG), Spanish grandparents spend on average six hours a day with their grandchildren.

SEGG attributes the phenomenon to the economic crisis and the problems most couples have reconciling their work and private life.

While acknowledging the positive effects grandparents have on their grandchildren’s

lives, SEGG also warns against the potential risks child care chores could have on the elderly.

There is no denying grandparents play a fundamental role in a child’s upbringing, teaching meaningful values and essential traditions.

Furthermore, spending time with their grandchildren helps many grandparents fight loneliness and feelings of uselessness, while keeping them physically active.

All these benefits notwithstanding, SEGG says some

grandparents may feel they are actually “working” instead of “spending time with their grandchildren,” which, in turn, can result in “stress, anxiety or depression” and turn what should be an enjoyable experience into a burdensome task.

To nip any potential crisis in the bud, SEGG advises mothers and fathers to never argue with grandparents in front of the children.

In addition, grandparents should not be overloaded with chores, because “they have the

A slightly offline message, as isn’t the extended family one of the great joys of Spanish culture? It is a facet of life that seems to be increasingly lost in some other European countries as the Nanny State encroaches ever further into our lives.

The willingness of families to rally round and help out when needed is a huge boon to society as a whole, and also to the State, which then doesn’t need to pay up

for a huge array of social services including childcare.

Those grandparents who do help with childcare make a huge difference to their children. Times are tough and wherever possible many families in Spain have to have both parents working to make ends meet. Often they cannot afford childcare and that is where the grandparents come in. They selflessly pitch in and help out.

The suspicion of the report is that they may be exploited by their unscrupulous offspring looking for an easy life.

But the report forgets the quid pro quo; those grandparents will themselves be looked after by their children when they need help.

That is as it should be. Families should stick together.

25 years for cyber-bully sexual abuse THE supreme courts have sentenced a cyber-bully to 25 years in prison for abusing two minors.

The man, 55, committed several crimes of sexual abuse and bullying over the internet when he contacted the two minors and pretended to be a 17-yearold boy.

He managed to gain their confidence through lies and false promises and then obtained sexual images of them which he distributed to their friends and family.

Manuel Joaquin B has been sentenced for abuse by lies, sexual abuse over the internet, child pornography, exhibitionism, distribution of child pornography, threatening behaviour and crimes against morality.

After grooming the two young girls, 12 and 13, the abuser persuaded them to send him revealing and sexual pictures then he would distribute them to the girls’ families as well as their school friends.

A police spokesperson commented that Manuel was particularly difficult to catch as he was a systems engineer and, therefore, well versed in how to cover his tracks on the internet.

YOUNG GIRLS: In danger on the net.

Using his superior knowledge of the technical systems he would take over the accounts of the girls and all their contacts and use these to threaten them with.

Investigations and witness testimony have revealed that he met with both girls on several occasions in a hotel in Madrid and during some of these meetings he had sex with them.

The supreme court considers the facts to have been proven and will now accept any appeals the defence team may make.

A FALSE belief about salesmen is that you need the gift of the gab to succeed.

If this is your view then selling as a career isn’t for you. All you will do is talk yourself out of sales.

One of my favourite expressions is, ‘you will get what you want only when you convince the customer that he is going to get what he wants.’

The Lord in His wisdom gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason. Most of us can ignore such advice, salesmen dismiss it at their peril. The professional salesman listens intently to his client’s needs.

He will learn as much about him as he can, including his likely budget; he then sells him the solution. The deal is closed, everyone is happy.

LISTEN: The best salespeople listen to what the client wants.

Salesmen fail because they are too focused on what they want to sell rather than what the customer wants to buy. The salesman won’t listen, the client walks.

Another misconception is that salesmen are deceitful. Many are but that works two ways. Every salesperson knows the maxim; ‘buyers are liars.’ Deception rarely works. If it does both you and the client loses and you are in the wrong business.

People buy people: the first thing to sell is yourself. If the client takes a dislike to you it is pointless to try and sell your product. You have already lost the sale.

A buying decision is rarely based on logic, emotion drives the sale.

Very often the purchase is bought because it makes a statement about the buyer, it appeals to vanity. If cars and much else were bought on price and logic the choice available would be much narrowed down.

Finally, it is pointless to present your service to anyone but the decision maker. If the decision maker is not present then you shouldn’t be either. Avoid a situation in which the decision to buy is deferred. Better to take the order with the guarantee that it will be cancelled in the event of buyer’s wobble.

We are told to eat our five-a-day of fruit and vegetables, but this can be quite an expense for many families. But then on the other hand, 300 million tonnes of fruit and vegetables are thrown away each year simply because their shape is not pleasing to the eye.

Wonky carrots, not-perfect

YOU read about the influx of tourists at the airports and the hotels, crowing about the increase in numbers and how well everything is going.

The majority of people that work and live on the Costa del Sol would disagree with the number-crunchers and tell you that so far this is the worst year for tourism that they can remember.

Hotels that go down the ‘all inclusive’ route must carry much of the blame, due to the fact that the tourists do not seem to leave these places to explore the cafes and bars that the local towns have to offer.

Many complain bitterly about the quality of the food in these ‘all inclusive’ places but because they have paid for it they soldier on regardless.

Having said that, what do tourists do at night for any form of entertainment? Mayors seem to have totally lost the plot when considering what exactly a tourist needs.

You cannot find a pub with a live band, karaoke night or just general background music as the knowledgeable mayors close these places down or threaten the premises with high fines or closure.

The only crowds I ever see are at supermarket checkouts because only one till is open.

Rules bent THOUSANDS of people who have committed sexual offences against children are no longer being barred from working with young people in the UK, figures suggest.

A Home Office spokesman said: “It remains the case that anyone committing the most

serious offences is still automatically barred from working closely and unsupervised with children.

“The changes strike an appropriate balance between avoiding unnecessary intrusion into people’s lives and ensuring that children and vulnerable groups are protected.”

So if some lowlife has only abused a little bit, they can carry on working with children and vulnerable members of society!

Bus stations, be it in Malaga, Fuengirola, Marbella or Estepona, have been on a short-changing scam since I first arrived here on the coast in 1990.

When confronted a correction is quickly made with another euro coin or so.

However, at the Estepona bus station last year I handed over a €50 note for my fare to Marbella.

It was only a few euros but my change was €20 short although when confronted the mistake was quickly set right without any apology or smile.

The supermarket assistants don’t have so much cheek, they simply stick to 20 or 50 cents when short-changing you.

Double standard SHOOTING down Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was an appalling crime and all the evidence points to pro-Russian rebels in East Ukraine.

Nobody in their right mind would gainsay this but it is altogether too convenient for the West to lay the blame squarely at Vladimir Putin’s door.

The US unwillingly stopped short of directly linking the Russian president with this atrocity but still maintained that he created the conditions that allowed it to occur.

Would it be too trite to mention ‘pots’ and ‘kettles’ at this juncture?

Did not Washington (and London) create the conditions that spawned the ISIS terrorists who put Al Qaeda in the shade?

They armed and encouraged rebels fighting the Syrian government who, if YouTube footage is genuine, tore out and ate their adversaries’ hearts.

ISIS has now descended on Iraq, killing thousands. No-one can directly link Obama or Cameron to these deaths, but can anyone say that they did not create the conditions that allowed them to occur?

DON’T know about you but frankly I’m just about up to here with the damn Middle East.

If it wasn’t for this mob of 14th century barbarians, those of us who live in the relative peace and democracy of the 21st century could be happily and thankfully enjoying the diversity and beauty of our wondrous planet.

Instead of that our lives are being assaulted and the time on our Earth constantly vexed by a bunch of people, who, if they weren’t floating on an ocean of oil, would merit no attention whatsoever. Is it not ironic that races which are not far from using camels as a means of transport should control the substance that literally allows the wheels of the West to function at all?

None of them seems to know what they truly want (unless it’s to die killing someone else.) Hamas, Isis, Al-Qaeda and Lord know how many more, all set on causing as much mayhem as

completely incapable of telling anyone what they truly want.

None of them have ever contributed anything constructive to society. Name me one truly great invention that has emanated from members of an Arabic community. Well, I’m waiting...

What we should really do is withdraw totally from all these dysfunctional countries, except perhaps Saudi Arabia, whose no-nonsense, dictatorial royal

family has at least got their citizen control right. Don’t worry about Israel, they can look after themselves. Put a blanket ban on all Middle East travellers to the West and let ’em all get on with it.

When the dust finally settles, start doing deals with those left standing. But we won’t, will we? Our do-gooders will continue to meddle in situations that are completely beyond their control and understanding, subsequently laying even more hatred at our doorsteps. Every time we interfere in the affairs of a Middle Eastern country we unite our enemies in a common goal. Take out the infidels!

Well, I’m sick of it. The sooner we tell ’em all to get on with it the better. Watch my lips. We’re not interested in your customs, your religions, your laws or your tribal tumults. All we want is to be left alone to enjoy the wonderful democracy and peace we have created over the centuries, often at heavy cost.

T is said that people don’t want to hear the truth because they don’t want their illusions destroyed.

This is understandable but it gives pause for thought as to how much our opinions are shaped by propaganda and self-deception.

Human bondage conjures up images of enslavement of Africans by Europeans. However, since its ‘abolition’ in 1807 the scourge of slavery has increased.

Slavery is now widespread and by association we are all sweatshop slave owners.

Of 53 movies, mostly Hollywood productions, no less than 45 are based on African slavery. Needless to say ethnic African involvement in the capture and trade of their own countrymen is brushed aside.

Long after the supposed abolition of slavery Britain’s empire became rich courtesy of indentured slavery, deportation, exploitation, transportation, enslavement of prisoners-of-war,

and ethnic cleansing dressed up as emigration. Asians were victims of European slavery in far greater numbers than were the Africans. You will search long and hard to find their suffering

recorded. The trans-Atlantic slave trade was relatively insignificant when set against slavery in the broader sense of its meaning both then and now.

Surprisingly, the ethnic group that suffered most in enslavement, its cruelties and magnitude were White Europeans. Over time more Europeans were enslaved

by Africans than the other way around. Forts and towers dotted along Mediterranean coasts were not put there to deter Martians.

Then there were the numbers of Europeans enslaved by fellow Europeans. We are not talking Biblical nor of the Roman Empire period but within living memory of most of us.

The death toll and suffering endured by Europeans throughout the Soviet Gulag was chronicled by great writer and former slave Alexander Solzhenitsyn. He was described as ‘The Conscience of the 20th Century.’ The Gulag was the Soviet Union’s forced labour camp system. It consisted of more than

500 widely scattered labour colonies. A euphemism for frozen tundra plantations situated in the harshest of climates.

The numbers of men, women and children who perished in these forced labour camps and colonies has been set as high as 10 times the number of those said to have been murdered by the German Reich. The West turned a blind eye and even assisted in it.

This monstrous Soviet system, that existed from 1920 to the collapse of the USSR, accounted for more than the combined total of those enslaved throughout human history.

For over 70 years tens of millions of unfortunate Europeans were ‘reaped and harvested’ by Soviet cattle cars. The rail road convoys ran from all over Soviet occupied Europe.

That this is the past is another self delusion. According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), 20.9 million people around the world work in conditions defined as slavery.

The best ways to ease those summer stings STINGS and summer unfortunately go hand in hand and whether it be a mosquito or a wasp, the dangers of stings increase in the summer.

Mosquito bites are the most common and whilst most are relatively easy to ease, there is a risk of allergic reaction. Dr. Maria Pilar Garcia Muret, chief of dermatology at Chiron Hospital, Barcelona explains: “The symptoms of a mosquito bite are immediate and easy to recognise: redness, swelling and itching. But if it produces headaches, fever, fainting, confusion, difficulty breathing and tightness in the throat or chest, you should go to the doctor immediately as it is likely to be an allergic reaction.”

Home remedies can also help itching. Try these natural tips to ease a range of bites: Mosquitoes: Rubbing salt or lemon on the area may relieve itching mosquito bites or apply a cold compress.

STINGS: The danger increases in the summer.

Wasps: Vinegar, whilst effective for most stings, is particularly suitable for wasps. In some rural areas locals recommend rubbing fresh garlic on the area or cutting

sage leaves in half and applying. If you can remove the sting the pain lessens quicker.

Spiders: Wash with soap and water and apply ice to the affected area.

People can become food bores on diets ARE you a food bore? One in two women admit they talk too much about food whilst on a diet, boring people about calorie counting, sugar content and health risks.

Almost one in four even admitted to ‘preaching’ to their friends about the consequences or benefits of different food and drink and, perhaps even more worrying, over 40 per cent of women admitted they did stop eating something as their friend scared them into changing their diet. Thirty-five per cent of women also said they avoid certain friends when dieting because they know they will end up making them feel guilty about what they eat.

The findings came from a study of 2,000 women in the UK.

Why are bulbs popular?

There are bulbs for all seasons, some are exotic.

Since they grow well in pots as well as the open

garden they are useful for the terraces, courtyards, patios, apartment/ penthouse terraces, rockeries, flower beds or as natural plantings under trees and deciduous shrubs.

Many will come up year after year and multiply.

They can have a dramatic effect as individual bulbs or as massed plantings.

Once planted many need little care. They are therefore of special interest to absentee gardeners.

For late winter and spring The most reliable in the garden are anemones, grape hyacinths, freesias, flag irises, Dutch and Spanish irises and miniature irises. Flag irises are useful for semi shaded corners, the others full sun.

For pots try clivias, anemones, tulips, ranunculus, and exotic species of daffodils and amaryllis and for window boxes grape hyacinths and late planted full sized hyacinths.

For us nothing can beat blue agapanthus, specimen lilies, Peruvian lilies, alstroemerias, alliums, crocosmia (montbretia) or patches of fritillaries.

For Christmas, winter and early spring In the garden patches of crocuses and daffodils can be out for Christmas and the New Year. Freesias and tulips will soon follow.

Have a snack to fall asleep MANY people have trouble dropping off to sleep and some don’t get all the sleep they need which puts the biological clock out of whack, but there are ways to improve the amount of sleep the body gets and one of them is by eating a suitable snack.

Here are a few of the most effective according to a study done by the Yamaguchi University in Japan.

Banana nut clusters with low fat milk. Granola is made of 100 per cent whole grains which are high in carbohydrates which will help towards a more regular circadian rhythm (sleep cycle).

Low fat milk is also rich in tryptophan which converts to serotonin and melatonin; both of which have sedative effects.

Greek yoghurt. As well as carbs this also contains around 10 per cent of the recommended daily intake of calcium which, in turn, helps regulate melatonin to get the body’s sleep habits up to standard.

Whole grain crackers.

These are a good source of vitamin B which may help prevent insomnia according to some studies.

Almonds, or almond butter on whole grain bread. Almonds provide a high dose of magnesium which promotes relaxation and sleep.

These foods, eaten late at night, should have anyone’s eyelids drooping so now there really is no excuse to skip sleep.

The best killer gift ever received!

T

HE system of ordering special things from home and getting them in the mail as care packages should have been patented earlier, long before eBay came along.

We could get gifts just for the asking and frequently, too. My house was awash with American knick-knacks... maraschino cherries for Manhattan cocktails, cherry cokes for the kids, rivers of crunchy peanut butter, barrels of proper ketchup and shoelaces.

I had such an impressive inventory that if tied end to end the American astronauts would not have had to send a rocket to the moon. They already had a rope ladder.

But, the biggest, best, and most phenomenal gift of all came via the visit of an Iowa hometown high school friend. He had read that flies were a nuisance in Spain and therefore brought me a proper, good, old-fashioned, American fly swatter. This small apparatus changed the course of history for all of Mojacar. Within

six months of its arrival, I had killed the entire weight of Planet Earth twice over in dead flies!

I became an obsessed, sweeping, flicking plague-ofdeath to all flies that came into a visual radius. I couldn’t eat breakfast in the morning without splattering at least two triples and a double. I was whacking those pests in mid-air before they even thought about landing.

When I first arrived, they were a menace.

I had seen them carry off donkeys.

We used to have to eat our food at such a pace and immediately.

From the time it was scooped up and put on your fork, it needed to be covered with a serviette while bringing it to the mouth.

We tried eating outdoors hoping the smoke from the fire would confuse them. But it irritated them to

such an extent that the flies just picked up the fire and moved it Ric Polansky away.

The September clue could hint at still further delays, but unless the Bill is done and dusted by the end of this year, it will surely be parked in 2015, an election year.

The political cost could come high, but it would be paid by the justice minister alone. And that, possibly, would not upset everybody within the government.

Gauche start NO sooner did Pedro Sanchez get the backing of rank-and-file PSOE party members to become Secretary General than he started to flex his muscles.

He ordered the party’s European MPs to vote against Jean-Claude Juncker’s nomination as president of the European Commission.

The MPs did so unenthusiastically while Sanchez justified his order as “coherent.”

Let’s start the day with a question. What does Windows 8 and Android have in common?

Well at first inspection there are very few commonalities other than the ‘touch screen’ type icon displays!

Once you go beyond these minor similarities there are very few aspects in common between the two systems.

Both Windows 8 and Android operating systems require (not request or ask) that you

have an email account in their respective systems: hotmail/ outlook in the case of Windows and a Gmail account in the case of Android without which you cannot access any of their ‘free apps.’

Like so many people recently, I have had to go through the barrage of ‘security’ steps to ensure that my email account was actually safe by providing further personal information.

So “what is wrong with that?” would be the next obvious, fair question. Creating an email address is simple and, in truth, you volunteer much more information on social media sites like Facebook. Over the years that I have been

involved with the changing internet, I have noticed that there is a subtle trend towards getting more information out of you than you volunteer for the census.

By the very nature of what I do, I need a number of email addresses to keep my life in neat little boxes and so, this process has been repeated for each of my email addresses.

Very frustrating! A possible solution!

Doctor Miralles has named after him in DOCTOR Jose Miralles Jimenez, a doctor who practised for over 20 years in town, as had a street named after him in the town of Albox.

The now deceased doctor, originally from Cadiz, worked with patients in Albox for more than two decades and was known for his dedication and unbridled care he provided to people within the town.

The new street, Calle Jose Miralles Jimenez, is

now part of a junction with Calle Rosario.

The street naming was attended by the children and wife of Jimenez, the mayor of Albox (Rogelio Mena), town hall staff and representatives from SEPA (Association of Entrepreneurs and Professionals in Albox), as well as numerous residents who remember the doctor with affection.

During the naming ceremony, Jose Miralles

Maldonado, the doctor’s son, honoured his father saying, “Besides his professional achievements, Jose Miralles was, above all, a good man who dedicated his life to doing good things. That love, shared left and right, always accompanied his mood which was so frank and hearty. We receive this honour on his behalf, not because he needed it, but because we are filled with pride and satisfaction.”

Albox outdoor pool to the relief of resid ROGELIO MENA, the mayor of Albox opened the outdoor pool in Albox last week to the relief of residents of Albox.

The pool is open every day of the week from 12 noon until 9pm. The pool is there for residents to enjoy “at very affordable prices” said the mayor, who encouraged all Albox residents to “visit this new sports centre and the other facilities on offer.”

Mena said Albox has been treated with the pool, especially after the opening of the indoor pool in the same complex on July 7 and an outdoor pool in the hamlet of Las Pocicas.

STOLEN GOODS: Were being sold at recycling centres in Almeria.

Thieves arrested OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil have arrested three thieves responsible for burglaries from multiple industrial units in Albox and Pulpi.

The thieves have been charged with several counts of burglary, with the value of stolen goods reaching approximately €80,000. Officers began the investigation after complaints from business owners in Albox and Pulpi.

The thieves had stolen materials from various industrial workshops in the two towns, and were attempting to sell them at recycling centres in the area. From descriptions supplied by business owners, officers were able to pinpoint various stolen goods in junkyards, including cables and aluminium, and from this were able to ascertain the identity of the thieves.

Officers began watching the alleged thieves, and in the process were able to locate a vehicle in a clearing near the village of Cuevas del Almanzora that was being used to transport further stolen goods. The Guardia Civil recognised the occupants, and attempted to arrest them, but one managed to flee the scene at the time. All were residents of Huercal Overa.

Next leap forward in turbo technology

WENTY FIVE years after the invention of the TDI engine, Audi is now taking the next big step and making the diesel engine ‘even more emotional and sporty.’

In addition to the classic exhaust gas turbocharger, the electric biturbo is being introduced with a second charger arranged in series. Instead of a turbine wheel, it contains a small electric motor that applies a maximum drive power of seven kW to accelerate the compressor wheel to maximum speed within 250 milliseconds. That means the turbo power will come in smoothly and quickly even at low speeds.

The electric compressor is downstream of the intercooler. At very low engine speeds and thus correspondingly low exhaust gas energy at the turbocharger, the bypass valve closes and the air is

Audi has built two technology studies with the electric biturbo: The Audi A6 TDI concept is equipped with the new 3.0 TDI monoturbo; the Audi RS 5 TDI concept with the 3.0 TDI biturbo.

In steady-state - no additional impetus - the monoturbo produces a constant 240 kW (326 hp) and 650 Nm (479.4 lb-ft) of torque, the latter between 1,500 and 3,500 rpm. The electric compressor fills the gap in the torque curve below this range and provides for fast response and excellent elasticity. Acceleration from 60 to 120 km/h in sixth gear is reduced from 13.7 to 8.3 seconds.

The modified V6 biturbo in the Audi RS 5 TDI concept is even more impressive. It produces 283 kW (385 hp), and peak torque of 750 Nm (553.2 lb-ft) is available between 1,250 and 2,000 rpm.

The electric compressor provides for tremendous power when starting off. If the driver stays on the accelerator, 100 km/h (62.1 mph) is reached in roughly four seconds. Boost pressure is available immediately after each change of gear thanks to the intelligent interplay between the two turbochargers.

The most impressive aspect of both technology studies, however, is the rapid, nearly seamless development of power even at low engine speeds. The strengths of the electric biturbo lie exactly where they make the most sense in everyday driving.

It eliminates the need for constant downshifting, keeping engine speeds low.

Sporty drivers will really appreciate the passing power and immediate delivery of power when exiting a curve.

FORMULA ONE - Last Sunday’s superb Hungarian Grand Prix was won by Aussie Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) with a stellar drive. Nico Rosberg (4th in Hungary) leads Hamilton by 11 points in the driver’s championship.

Waltzing at Lorca

THE 19th Holers did a quick nip up the A7 to the beautiful Lorca Golf Resort to play a Team Waltz.

The weather and the course were perfect for golf with just the hint of a cooling breeze.

The A team of Nekana, Paco and Christine Dow (along with Fred the Ghost) took the honours with 85 points, with the team of Nigel Greenwood, Geoff Smith, Ian Postles and Mary the Ghost taking second spot with 83 points.

Ian Postles showed his consistency and determination by putting six balls into the barranca on the par four second from the tee.

Mark Danson, fresh from winning the Off Scratch Competition from the Yellow Tees at Aguilon on Saturday, carried on his good form by making an Eagle on the par five seventh. Bob Tagg scooped a Nearest the Pin on the fourth and converted to make a two and grabbed another two on the 10th. Dave Johnson also managed a pair of twos.

Back down the motorway to a really great spread and refreshments from La Vida at Cucador.

DESERT SPRINGS: Peter Harrington recorded his third victory in a row here.

Hat trick for Pete FORUM GOLF SOCIETY’S third visit of the year to Desert Springs saw Peter Harrington record his third victory in a row at the same venue, obviously a course that suits him perfectly.

On a day which saw some very good scoring Peter shot a net 67 to edge out second placed Terry Davies on

countback, with Alan Crofts (68) one further back in third. Terry Moore (69) was fourth, Mick Smith (71) fifth and Kevin Bircher (72) sixth.

BADGERS Golf Society visited Marina Golf for their weekly competition.

With very little wind and the course in good condition, good scores were expected. Winner of the day’s competition was Richard Jones with 45pts, playing off a 15 handicap, second place went to Martin Cahill with 40pts and third was Steve Dodd with 38pts.

Nearest the pins went to Martin Cahill, Lee Corbett and two to Richard Jones who also rounded his good day off with a two on the 17th, with the only other two of the day going to Lee Corbett.
