Beach flag boost for the summer season IN a boost to the tourism industry the beaches of the Balearic Islands have received a total of 63 Blue Flags, 16 more than last summer. The flags are given out across Europe by ADEAC (authority in charge of Blue Flags) to beaches which meet their stringent quality controls; the beaches are judged on, among other things, the cleanliness of the water, the standard of the beach installations and the quality of the sand. Among those which have regained their flags are the beaches of Oratori, Cala Vinyes, Cala Ferrara, Platja de s’Arenal and Cala Mondrago (pictured). The only beach to have lost its flag is Es Canar.

Overall Spain has received a total of 681 flags on 573 beaches and 108 marinas, which is a new world record followed only by Greece (407 flags), Turkey (397

flags) and France (379 flags). In a press conference, the president of ADEAC, Jose Ramon Sanchez Moro, commented that this result consolidated Spain as the world leader, a place it has held, without interruption, since 1987. Councillor for Mobility Gabriel Vallejo has suggested there should be more connection of bike routes between the industrial estates and the centre of Palma. At the moment the routes exist but they are fragmented and therefore more dangerous to users.

More routes for cyclists

BICICIUTAT - a cycling collective in Palma - has proposed several improvements for urban cyclists. Of the seven proposals one has been approved by the council in Manacor. The idea is to create footpaths to all the local schools with the aim of “not collapsing traffic at the school rush-hours in Palma. These footpaths could be used by cyclists and would also have the added advantage of instilling in the young the healthy habit of walking or cycling as opposed to using the car for everything.”
