Alicante top province for Blue Flag beaches
Cute babies FIVE lemurs have been born at the Terra Natura park in Benidorm. Two are ring-tailed ‘cattas’ and three are black and white-ruffed ‘varios’.
Fast work TRACK operator ADIF has confirmed that nonstop Alicante-Madrid AVE high-speed trains can cover the journey in 125 minutes now that new security systems are operational.
Old bangers OF the 2.5 million cars registered in the Valencian Community 924,598 are between 10 and 15 years old and 432,000 are still older.
A BLUE FLAG means that a beach meets strict standards for water quality, safety, services and environmental issues. Alicante has more than any other province in Spain, with 60 beaches and 14 marinas scooping up one of the coveted annual awards. Valencia’s beaches received 28 of the flags for its beaches and the region’s third province,
Castellon, was given 32 for beaches and one for a marina. With recognition for six more beaches and two more marinas, this was the best result ever, said Jose Ciscar, the region’s vice-president. One in every five of the Blue Flags awarded in Spain went to a beach in the Valencia Community, Ciscar pointed out. Only the 123 awarded to
Galicia in the north of Spain outstripped this region’s. The Els Molins beach in Denia received a Blue
Flag for the first time while Les Marines, also in Denia, and Teulada’s L’Ampolla recovered those lost last year. Top for quality Page 34
Working to reduce fire risk THE Iberdrola electricity board has been cutting firebreaks in Javea beneath high tension cables. Undergrowth and trees have been cleared in a 20-metre wide strip to reduce fire risk in the Granadella and Costa Nova areas, in an operation supervised by the town hall. Much of the land is private property and it was necessary to request permission from the owners. It was vital to ensure that all the cleared vegetation, trees and pruned branches were later removed from the area, as they could become a hazard in the case of fire, the town hall explained.
