Greenpeace activists leave their mark GREENPEACE activists invaded the controversial Hotel Algarrobico in Carboneras at the weekend. Their mission was to paint the façade of the hotel black, leaving a 8,000-square-metre message which read: ‘Hotel illegal’. The almost 100 activists demanded the demolition of the hotel built by Azata which has 21 floors and 411 rooms. Dressed in bright orange overalls, the activists abandoned the hotel after finishing their artwork without one arrest in what has been the largest single activity in the 30-year history of the organisation, according to Greenpeace. The protest was concluded with two-high

speed dinghys out at sea flying banners with the messages ‘Algarrobico, a black mark on the coast’ and ‘Demolition now’. Greenpeace bemoan the fact that the Junta has not responded to a letter sent to President Susana Diaz asking that the Junta buy back the
land on which the hotel is located and register the property. Similarly, according to Greenpeace, the Ministry of the Environment has turned its back on the defence of the coast in the area. “The end of the black mark of the Algarrobico Hotel begins with the
purchase of the land by the Junta again. Algarrobico has become the shame of the inactivity of the regional government,” said the director of Greenpeace, Mario Rodriguez, who added: “The government must enforce the environmental laws of our country.”
Forest fires investigated THE Forest Fire Research Team of Infoca has determined that both the fire that took place in late March in Sierra Gador, and the blaze in
the Lucainena/Sorbas area were caused by failures in the power lines which run through the area. Investigators have also claimed that
the fire in Somontin, which spread to Lucar, was caused by a bonfire used for leisure purposes that was not put out properly.
