Almuñecar population now 27,200 THE Axarquia town of Almuñecar has reached an official population of 27,200 residents. According to the INE (national institute of statistics) the figure is 27,200 on the padron (residents’ registry) but according to the municipal offices the number is 29,407, 14,632 men and 14,775 women. The numbers from the padron and municipal offices hardly ever coincide as people move around and forget to take themselves off the list; also the number of births and deaths has to be taken into account.

Hey big spenders! Tourists to Andalucia have deepest pockets ANDALUCIA attracts visitors with a bigger budget than those who travel to other Spanish destinations. According to data released by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, the average tourist arriving for a twoweek stay in Andalucia will have €1,164 in their pockets; this is 4.4 per cent more than those tourists who go to other areas. Only the Canary islands come close. Tourists visiting Andalucia in March spent a total of €1.36 billion, which was 8.5 per cent up on last year. This accounts for 13.5 per
cent of all income derived from tourism in Spain. The Balearic Islands used to be the top earner from tourism but they have now dropped
to sixth place on the list. So far this year tourists spending their holidays in Andalucia have spent an average of €105 per day;
this augurs well for the summer season which is the real barometer of how tourism in the region is going.
61,000 free meals handed out in first year THE ATIS (Workers’ Association of Velez-Malaga for Social Integration) solidarity diningroom has handed out more than 61,000 meals to the needy in its first year of existence. According to Salvador Marin, head of the initiative, the exact
number is 61,193 meals, all cooked and prepared at their own premises. They have also distributed more than 28,000 kilos of fruit and vegetables since they first started in March 2013. Marin said: “ATIS would like to
thank the hundreds of friends and volunteers, among them many local companies and factories, who have made this project a reality with their contributions either in time or in products.” Marin went on to comment: “We are fighting against those
who are looting this country with their poor political decisions, which provoke more poverty and suffering for the masses.” The solidarity dining-room continues to service the needy from its location in the old ‘Bar Frias’ in Velez-Malaga.
