Poison whisky claims life as seven more in intensive care A MAN, 32, has died in Almeria and seven more were hospitalised after drinking from a contaminated bottle of whisky. According to reports, the bottle of whisky, perfectly

sealed, was found some days before in a carrier bag in a street in El Ejido and was saved for a ‘botellon’ party. Six young men drank from the bottle, as did two Moroccan

illegal car park attendants, one of them the deceased. The death and poisonings occurred in Calle Trajano, in the heart of Almeria City, an area known for its ‘botellon’parties.

Bennett’s Irish eyes are smiling THE Irish Cyclist, Sam Bennett 23, from German Cycling Team NetappEndura won the 29th Clasica de Almeria race at the weekend. Bennett won the 178 kilometre road race which takes place between Almeria and Roquetas de Mar in a time of 4 hours, 21 minutes and 33 seconds in this fixture on the European Calendar of the Union Cycliste International (UCI). Sam is considered to be one of Ireland’s biggest new cycling talents and is already a two-time national under-23 champion. His biggest success to date was winning stage five of the Tour of Britain in 2013.

At around 2.20 am on Saturday morning the emergency services were called and six people were taken to hospital. An hour later, they were called to the scene where the man died. His friend, 37 was taken to hospital where he spent several days in intensive care and is now making a recovery. The six youngsters aged between 22 and 23 years are now out of intensive care and three have been allowed home. The other three youngsters are due to leave hospital soon. The National Police have sent the bottle of whisky with cans of soda which were also in the bag to the laboratories of the National Institution of Toxicology for examination. ©TNE/ROTH
