According to official figures, these municipalities have lost 2,641 inhabitants in the past year, from an area which, in recent years, had witnessed a population boom. Towns like Torrevieja and the Orihuela Costa have recorded an increase, mainly due to the arrival of Russian and Scandinavian residents, but smaller towns have seen their populations fall. Rojales was down 693 residents in the past year, 16.5 per cent of its population. San Miguel de Salinas lost 590, followed by Catral (-435) and Los Montesinos (-160).
