Policeman badly hurt in motorbike chase A MOTRIL Local Police officer needed emergency surgery on Tuesday evening after he was seriously injured in a chase with
a suspected motorbike thief. The condition of the 24-yearold man remains serious as he suffered internal injuries.
The chase began when the victim, together with a colleague, spotted the rider of a motorbike carrying out dangerous stunts in
Calle Cartuja in Motril. On checking the motorbike’s numberplate they found it did not match the model of bike, so suspected it may have been stolen. A chase along the streets of Motril ensued which ended up in Calle Santisimo. When the victim tried to block the way with his own motorbike the suspect kicked him over. The officer fell onto a milestone which caused internal injuries including broken ribs and a suspected perforated stomach. At the time of going to press, the culprit was still at large.
Demolition demo
MORE than 100 people, many of them expatriates, took to the streets to demonstrate against a move which they fear could lead to 17 homes being demolished. An anonymous complaint has led Alcaucin Town Council to revoke the permits of 17 houses built on non-urban land between 1997 and 2004. It did so during a meeting held on Tuesday evening and at the request of the Directorate General of Land Planning. The regional government body had received an anonymous report complaining about the houses. The mayor of Alcaucin, Domingo Lozano, explained that the council was only complying with the regional government’s request.

AT RISK: Homes may share same fate as this property in Cantoria. “I’m against this measure because it’s an atrocity,” he added. “It’s surreal. These people bought their houses in good faith. They spent all their savings and some of them have been living here for 20 years,” said Councillor Elena Fernandez. Some 100 people, most of them expatriates, demonstrated in front of
the town hall to protest against the measure which could eventually lead to the demolition of the houses. They were summoned by Save Our Homes in Axarquia (SOHA), an organisation set up in 2008 to fight for properties in a similar predicament. According to SOHA, this situation has arisen as the result of a lack of
intelligence on the part of the regional government (Junta de Andalucia) to propose viable solutions to the urban planning chaos that has developed in the last decade. “The Junta has the law by its side,” SOHA President Philip Smalley, told local newspaper Malaga Hoy, adding: “We have justice.”
