Farmers sentenced for dumping waste TWO pig farmers have been sentenced to three months in prison for dumping waste between 1999 and 2002 on a farm they managed in Manacor. They have also been fined and banned from farming for six months. They were initially facing six years in prison but pleaded

guilty in court to environmental crimes. The two men ran a pig farm between 1971 and 2003 with no opening or operating licences and without observing the necessary measures for waste treatment. Between 1999 and 2002 they dumped pig excrement on the

land, affecting neighbouring properties as water in nearby wells was contaminated. The water became unfit for human consumption due to the high amounts of nitrates in it. The case was at a standstill for four years and legislation from 2002 was applied to sentence them.
