Mercadona boost for local fishing industry THE fishing industry in Almeria province has been given a massive boost with the news that Mercadona will supply their stores in Madrid with fish caught in the ports of Almeria (pictured), Adra and

Garrucha. The supermarket chain, is expected to put into operation very soon its new logistics network throughout Spain to sell freshly caught fish in its 1,400 stores.

Since July, Mercadona

has been supplying fresh fish purchased at auctions in the ports of Almeria to the 33 supermarkets in the province.

Mercadona has now signed agreements to operate as a buyer in the

auctions organised by the Association of Shipowners of AlmerĂ­a (Asopesca) and the brotherhoods of Garrucha and Adra, along with more than 70 fishing organisations around the Spanish coast.

Mystery hero saves 9 from sea A MYSTERY man managed to rescue a total of nine people who were bathing in Cala del Plomo, (Nijar).

Nothing is known yet about the hero who saved so many lives with the aid of a rope in the tiny cove

which is just 200 metres wide. The bathers were surprised by the force of the current of water that was dragging them away from the shore.

The 112 Emergency Service received several calls warning that

there were several people in the water who could not get out because of the strong current.

One bather had to be transferred to hospital because of the amount of water they had swallowed.

Finance CLEAR UP: Volunteers took part in the beach and seabed cleaning day.

Cleaning up after the litter bugs…

MORE than 50 volunteers took part in the cleaning of the beaches Piedra Villazar and Cantal, in Mojacar on Sunday.

As part of the world beach cleaning day, 30 divers helped to clear rubbish from the seabed while other volunteers helped to clean up the beaches on land.

This is the second consecutive year that the event has been organised jointly by Mojacar Town

Hall and the Mojacar Dive Centre and is celebrated internationally every year on the third Saturday of September.

Divers from around the world remove rubbish that ends up in the oceans, polluting the waters.

The volunteers cleaning the beaches agreed that the dirtiest area is often used by young people for its nightlife.

Beach cleaning day also took centre stage in El

Embarcadero, when a group of volunteers participated in an event organised by the Junta de Andalucia.

The activities were centred at Parque Natural Cabo de Gata-Níja, and included various workshops and a guided visit to El Albardinal botanical garden.

Around 50 people helped. Nearly 150 kilos of rubbish was picked up throughout the day.

THE Spanish brain drain remains unplugged with many well qualified Almerians moving abroad to find work.

According to a local census, more than 700 natives of Roquetas de Mar are living abroad, either forced by the lack of work or the need for a qualification for a second language.

This is an increase of 100 people on the previous year. In total 36,086 Almerienses have left the province this year with Almeria City seeing the departure of 7,968 citizens.

This is followed by HuercalOvera with 2,325 and Nijar and Albox with around 1,500 each.

Especially significant are two towns with relatively small populations in the shape of Velez Rubio, with 1,144, and Adra, with 1,009, townspeople living abroad.

The rest are spread throughout the province which has seen a total of 155,524 people leave during the last five years.

In Spain, there are almost 80 universities (29 of them private) with almost 240 campuses.

The oldest which is still in operation is Salamanca University.

Founded in 1134, it was given the Royal charter of foundation by King Alfonso IX in 1218. It is the third oldest European university in continuous operation, behind Bologna, Oxford and La Sorbonne.

Suspected thief finally in custody after 39 arrests A MAN arrested 39 times for alleged robberies who was allowed to walk free by a judge has been rearrested and sent to prison.

Just days after being freed while investigations continued, he was arrested for further robberies, and this time the Courts in Almeria remanded the man in custody.

Manuel VS, 42, is an old hand, well known by local police. Following an increase in robberies in the Rio Andarax area police caught up with him.

He was spotted in a farmhouse close to Los Partidores pushing a shopping trolley towards the district of El Puche.

He was shot at by officers and fled on foot

before falling over.

Following arrest number 39, he was taken to Torrecardenas hospital for treatment to his injuries. In addition to two eyewitnesses to the break in, the National Police agents had more incriminating evidence,

they claim.

“A body search found a gun, a knife, a cutter and a goat’s foot,” said police.

In the cart, officers found taps, engine parts, a lamp, copper wire, water meters, a drill, a coffee maker, a paintball gun, various electrical

installation materials, and clamps for a car battery.

Despite that the judge did not remand him in custody. But just days later he was rearrested.

Now police believe he may be responsible for three more robberies in Los Partidores that night,

plus another half dozen small assaults in the same area.

Locals have shown their dismay at the repeated robberies and agricultural organisations have pleaded for more severe penalties to protect the property of farmers.

Get ready for the film festival THE third edition of the Almeria Western Film Festival (AWFF 2013) is set to start.

The festival will open to the public on October 2 and will continue to October 5.

It will be held in three locations. The Municipal Theatre of Tabernas, Mini Hollywood Oasys theme park and the movie studios, Fort Bravo.

Originally set up in 2011, the Almeria Western Film Festival was the first film festival in Europe dedicated to western movies.

The festival has two objectives.

One is to promote the cultural value of the western film genre by promoting the latest films on offer.

The other is to screen classic movies.

In addition, the festival promotes tourism and the environmental value of Tabernas as the wild west of Europe.

The town, thanks to its natural desert settings, was the location for hundreds of movies in the 60s and 70s.

Cantoria gets back to work WITH the summer holidays coming to an end and children going back to school, September is the month to get back to work.

And that is the case for Cantoria Town Hall.

The growing number of visitors to the sports facilities means work was needed to improve parking facilities.

So now workmen have started paving an area of about 1,600m2 with pressed concrete, and are doing work to prevent flooding when it rains.

Close to the town centre, workmen are also putting the final touches to the restoration of the Saavedra Theatre.

They are improving the inside of the building with upgraded sound and light installations, as well as improvements to the ticket office, toilets

and dressing rooms. The theatre is also getting a new lick of paint inside and out.

All of the work is being carried out by Cantoria based companies and workers.

The same applies to works at the entrance of the town by the AL-8311 as it passes through the hamlet of El Llano.

There the council wants to finish work to walls and pavements, and to improve lighting and landscaping of that section of the Via Verde.

These measures of urbanisation are being carried out through various subsidy schemes, including the employment workshop the ‘Restoration of Degraded Areas’ of the Junta de Andalucía, within the provincial plans of Almeria.

ALMERIA singer Manolo Escobar has had to cancel the concerts that he had planned for the coming months after his cancer came back.

The decision was announced after the singer was admitted to hospital in Benidorm, where he now lives, after a review in which doctors determined that he had to increase chemotherapy for the treatment of cancer.

“With this level of treatment we have to stop until the end of the year to make recovery faster,” said his representative Gabriel García Mármol, who added: “There is no ingression as such, he will have the sessions and will go home.”

2012, representing 8.8 per cent of the Andalucian population.

A Sunday bicycle ride MORE than 200 people participated in the first Citizen’s Bike Ride on Sunday morning in Almeria City.

The event was organised jointly by Almeria City Hall and the Ministry of Development of the Junta, with the aim of promoting this form of urban transport during mobility week.

The ride started from the Children’s ‘Trafico’ Play Park, located on the Nijar road and passed through the streets of the city covering a distance of just over 4.5kms which took participants around 40 minutes.

A fishy surprise in marina waters SAILORS and passers-by had a surprise at Aguadulces’s marina when shoals of millions of fish filled the harbour’s waters.

According to marine biologists, millions of sardines had formed large ball shoals and entered the harbour.

Fernando Orri a diver with 40 years of experience in all the oceans of the world said it was the first time he had seen anything like this, especially in a port.

He put it down to the extremely clean water making the occurrence very visible to all. He was returning to port on his boat from a diving trip when he spotted the shoals of fish.

“It was like looking at one of the Posidonia Sea Grass Meadows, there were millions of fish.”

‘Super hero’ takes to the streets ‘SUPER HERO’ Peatonico took to the streets of Almeria City during Mobility Week to help out pedestrians and highlight the problems of the car dominated streets.

The Almeria group Doble Fila, which works to promote safer mobility in the streets of the province got the idea from Mexico City where the ‘super hero’ Peatonito patrols the streets.

An actor dressed as Peatonico in his red cape and mask took the opportunity to make a tour of the city, denouncing situations or objects that obstruct pedestrians’ right of way.

During his tour Peatonico told off pedestrians for not

Mystery big cat back in the news A MYSTERY big cat is back in the news.

The Guardia Civil has received a new sighting of a large black cat in the Sierra de Gador. Its desciption fits the animal that was spotted in mid-August in Castala urban park in Berja. If it is a sighting of the same cat, it would have travelled through the mountains to the neighbouring town of Dalias.

According to Guardia Civil sources, two

farm workers in the foothills of the mountains, in Dalias, claimed they spotted the animal between 9am and 9.30am on Sunday morning.

Several agents moved to the area to conduct a search for what could be a panther, according to the descriptions given.

The first sightings of the animal forced Berja Town Hall to close the urban park on August 21, but it was reopened to the public days later even though the animal was not located. During that period, cage traps were installed to try to capture it, but without success.

Taking a Walk for Life THE now annual cancer charity walk in Arboleas, the ‘Walk for Life’ saw a massive turnout on Saturday afternoon.

The afternoon event started at the town hall square with live music from the Doghouse Band and a welcome speech followed

by Reverend Pauline, who covers the Andalucia region, saying a prayer before a minute’s silence.

The tape to officially get the walk under way was cut by a Spanish lady Claudia, accompanied by her daughter, on behalf of Claudia’s husband who is terminally ill with cancer.

Rebecca Long accompanied by her husband Louis also helped in the cutting of the tape.

This brave lady, like everyone that has been affected by cancer had her own story to tell and was full of praise for the Walk for Life charity.

Rebecca said: “As well as my husband Louis, Walk for

Life has been brilliant. They helped us out with a translation service and even paid for our diesel when we were travelling to Torrecardenas hospital in Almeria City twice a week for chemotherapy.

“I have an inoperable tumour on my oesophagus

and I am now on palliative care, taking painkillers and protein drinks. My husband Louis and I have cried a lot but we are enjoying life to the maximum.”

Participants took either a three or six kilometre walk, and upon returning to the

square were given a round of applause.

Entertainment included a dog show, live music and a hog roast. There was a great atmosphere with bars providing drinks and tapas.

Anyone affected with cancer can obtain support

from the Walk For Life, there is an office at the back of Sophia’s Wellness Centre which has a stock of specialist beds, wheelchairs, walking aids, mobility care and much more, freely available to anyone in need.

Donations of equipment are appreciated.

All money raised goes to helping both local Spanish and British families and is used for all kinds of help including hospital scans, translation services, wigs, dental services, fuel and money for dental services.

There are still two unclaimed prizes from the raffle, the winning tickets are Pink 31 and Green 296.

A CHARITY shop is appealing for people to give money to.

The Moraira Charity Shop, which stepped in to help disabled girl Keira with €2,500 for intensive therapy, as reported in last week’s EWN, has a large fund at its disposal to help the elderly or people in need. In the last year it has handed out €30,000.

And it is not alone. The Charity Shop Library in Javea has also stepped in to help cerebal palsy sufferer Keira. The five-year-old needed not just the cost of the treatment, but approximately €600 for accommodation.

The Charity Shop Library stepped in with the full cost, plus another €400 for ‘extras.’

Georgina Harvey, of the Javea charity explained that they wanted to help as many people as possible. “We try to give away €60,000 a year,” she said.

Meanwhile John Griffith, who is on the committee of the Moraira Charity Shop, explained that they are always on the lookout for deserving causes.

Cookie monster’s money tips!

IF a child is confronted with a tasty marshmallow, what do they do? Eat it or save it for later?

This simple scenario is the basis of a very famous psychological experiment to test a child’s self-control. The results point to how a child may fair financially in the future.

In 1972, 1,000 children were studied - each child was sat in a chair and one delicious marshmallow was placed in front of them.

The children were told: “You can have one marshmallow now, or two in 10 minutes, if you wait.”

Most of the children tested wolfed down the little pillow of sweetness within moments.

Only one third of the children waited the 10 minutes to receive two marshmallows. The experiment proved just how hard it is for children to have self-control and be able to see benefits in the future.

Inditex still growing despite narrowing profit margins INDITEX, the world’s biggest clothing retailer, has seen sales grow, even though profit growth has slowed.

The owner of the Zara chain signalled it was not immune to the depressed European markets, where cut price competition combined with a cold spring and foreign currency fluctuations combined to drive down profit margins after a particularly strong 2012.

But analysts said the Spanish group’s model of rapidly-changing fashion ranges remained among the best in the industry, and noted fast-growing Asian markets had overtaken Spain as its biggest source of sales for the first time.

However, the group said sales in Asia, Australia and Africa had overtaken Spain to account for 21.7 per cent of the total, up from 20.2 per cent a year earlier.

Inditex’s shares have tripled in value in the last five years.

Prices for premium oils are up a third from last year.

With this year’s Spanish crop expected to yield about 1.4m tonnes it could mean a financial fillip for growers.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s aim to reduce public spending by €150 billion between 2012 and 2014, is proving a tough target with unemployment of 26 per cent reducing the tax take and pushing up spending on benefits.

Banks face ‘haircut’ BANKS owed billions by insolvent frozen fish company Pescanova are being asked to take a 70 to 75 per cent ‘haircut.’

A KPMG audit showed the company had a debt of €3.6 billion, making it one of the country’s biggest bankruptcies.

Most of that is believed to be owed to the Sabadell, Popular, Caixabank and NovaGalicia banks.

New chairman Juan Manuel Urgoiti was due to meet bank representatives. It is thought he wants them to accept losses as part of a plan to relaunch the firm.

But he might have his work cut out as, in an independent action, accounting firm

PwC is drawing up a viability plan to save the company. Measures could include a fire sale of assets and an exchange of debt for shares. That would give the banks control of the company. Whether the banks want to get into the frozen fish industry is another question.

Urgoiti is a former chairman of Banco Gallego and sits on the board of directors at success story Inditex, owners of Zara clothing retailers. Former chairman Manuel Fernandez de Sousa and nine former executives face a string of charges in the criminal courts. Several are alleged to have made millions of euros fraudulently.

Just who do you think you are kidding ?

INTERESTING to read in the finance pages (Issue 1472) that Telefonica (or Movistar) bosses think they can stop losing customers. They must be kidding! They had better think again unless they change their customer service.

Telefonica rebranded as Movistar largely because it had such a dire reputation for service.

If my experience is anything to go by nothing has changed. I have now moved to a smaller provider after a long list of delays and problems with Movistar and am very happy to have done so. My new phone company actually seems to want my custom. It is cheaper and offers far better service.

So if Movistar, which lost 248,000 customers in March, really wants to turn things around they should sack their head of customer services and employ someone who actually cares for their clients.

Justice questions TWO stories attracted my attention (Costa del Sol Issue 1472).

Firstly, Assault revenge. “A man, 26, was arrested in Malaga for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman, 29. Her partner, 35, was arrested for beating the attacker unconscious.” Should the partner of the sexually assaulted lady just have stood by and done nothing to protect/defend his lady companion?

Secondly, Bazaar attack. “Four people were arrested in Malaga for allegedly attacking the owner of a Chinese bazaar. The victim’s husband was also arrested for hitting them with a stick.” Should he have just stood by and done nothing to protect/defend his wife?

Two defenders of innocents protecting their loved ones and arrested? Is this sensible, true justice?

Money monsters I AGREE with CG that the ruination of Africa is charity (Letters Issue 1470). Some of these charities seem to be money-making ‘monsters.’

A few months ago I managed to get in touch with two of these so called charities, I complained about their use of young children on the TV adverts. The answer I got was that they were ‘paid actors,’ this referred to a little lad standing in a cot with tears in his eyes.

Can you believe it?

Then a few weeks later they began showing an advert with a baby a few months old, could that be another actor? They are sick making money the way they are doing.

I think they should be educating the populations about birth control!

why the police are set on stopping them. I will try!

They most probably do not pay their dues, social or taxes. Many of the goods are counterfeit and some are most probably dangerous (small loose bits dangerous to children, lead paint etc) and are often shoddy and sub-standard.

The source of the goods comes from cheap (sweat shop) labour, and most probably from black (drugs/ arms/laundered) money.

They are also taking money away from legitimate traders and shops.

When the police arrive they pack up and run away because they know they are breaking the law and selling fake goods.

If you cannot afford designer goods why buy sub-standard ones that fall to bits?

Go to the normal shops and buy something really comparable. I know

these people need to make a living but there are other jobs like cleaning, gardening, window cleaning.

Looky out!

AFTER visiting Torrox Costa market we took some friends visiting from the UK to a favourite Chinese restaurant on the front for a menu del dia.

For the next couple of hours we were pestered every 10 to 15 minutes by hawkers with no respect for our privacy.

They were not deterred with a wave of no thanks or even a ‘no gracias’ so our conversations or meal had to be interrupted to, as politely as possible, tell them to go away.

As the restaurant owners, who I believe have the right to stop them entering their premises and can be fined if they are caught selling there, seem to turn a blind eye, maybe they are on a percentage.

We felt like sitting targets. We would like to be able to have an internationally recognised sign on the table that says no hawkers and be left to enjoy the meal and company.

We now seriously think twice about returning to any restaurant where we have been pestered.

IN response to the letter from Charles Roasad (Gibraltar suffered as well, Issue 1472) on the subject of the award for gallantry for Gibraltar. l find his comparison between the way the citizens of Gibraltar and Malta were managed in some cases amusing.

I’m sure the citizens of Malta would have been delighted to have been sent to Jamaica or Madeira.

Unfortunately nobody asked them.

As for being bombed by the Italians that’s a joke - they used to drop their load in the sea and be home before tea. Ask any Maltese, they loved being bombed by the Italians.

Burka controversies are a ploy to bring in Islamic message

W

HAT no one seems to realise is that all this burka business is simply yet another ploy to bring the Islamic ‘message’ into the front rooms of the ‘infidels.’

Another weapon in the hands of those who would take over our culture and ultimately our democratic freedom.

A dozen or so years back no one had even heard of Islam, let alone be interested enough to discuss its pros and cons. Now it’s everywhere.

You can’t pick up a newspaper without some Islamic follower spouting off about being ‘offended’ by some action taken by the follower of a different faith, generally Christian.

As a Christian country, the UK populace has to be made completely aware that our culture is totally unacceptable to these people, irrespective of how many ‘moderates’ declare otherwise.

To these extremists we are the evil face of the non-believer and the

CHOICE: Democratic right.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT ultimate goal of their branch of Islam is to rid the world of all who don’t totally encompass the teachings of the prophet Mohamed.

We have to make some kind of stand against those who would take away our freedom and plunge our free thinking, often tragically naive populace back into the dark ages.

The lessons are there for the taking.

All we have to do is take a leaf out

of many Islamic countries’ book.

Some don’t allow Christian churches to be erected. Therefore we curb the building of mosques, before there’s one on every street.

They don’t allow anyone, even in private, to worship anything other than Islam. We therefore have to firmly discourage the taking over of whole streets by praying congregations. We have to let these people know that halal meat can never be obligatory and pork will always be on the school menu. We must bring home loud and clear that the Union Jack is the flag of our country and it will be flown over

every school in the land if so desired. We must endeavour to prevent ‘no go’ areas and make it absolutely clear that Sharia law is not the law of our land and never will be. Most of all we must stop being petrified to cause offence to these people. So they’re easily ‘offended.’ So what? What are they going to do if we ban the burka in all public institutions (which we should). Declare war?

In Islamic countries I’ve seen Western women smacked on their bare arms and calves with pretty hefty sticks wielded by ‘religious police.’ I’m not condoning the physical removal of women’s face masks, but if something isn’t done, I can see the only course of action being one of violence.

Do you really want to see our suburbs resembling those of the Syrians? For all our sakes, and especially our children, please God let it never come to that.

Sue Barker steps down from BBC Sports Personality of the Year

ARY LINEKER, Clare Balding and Gabby Logan have been announced as joint presenters of the 2013 BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards, as Sue Barker steps down from the hosting job after 19 years.

WOMEN spend more time getting ready for a night out with girl-friends than for a date.

A new study on 2,000 women conducted by Malibu Rum found that on average, women spend 40 minutes getting ready for a date, but more than an hour getting ready for a night out with friends.

Two thirds of the women involved in the study said the reason behind this is they want to ‘wow’ their friends by looking the best they can and also admitted to comparing their appearance to that of their pals. And for this reason spend more time preening than they perhaps normally would.

Whereas 50 per cent of women admitted they have to rush to get ready for a date night, because their partners are ready considerably faster and lack patience.

NIGHT OUT: Everyone wants to ‘wow’ their friends.

For some, however, it’s about the revelling and enjoying the process with a cocktail or glass of wine, and the music on whilst choosing the best outfit, hair and make-up to complete the look.

That’s why, according to the study a further 44 per cent of the women surveyed also admitted they enjoy the experience of getting ready to go out with friends just as much as the night out itself.

McCartney’s headscarves DESIGNER Stella McCartney has created two headscarves which will be given to cancer patients.

They will be available to patients at London’s College Hospital (UK) but can also be bought online from Harper’s Bazaar to raise money for the hospital’s charity.

The designer, who lost her mother to breast cancer, said the cause was close to her heart: “When you’re ill, your confidence is very low.

POOR DIET: Middle-aged men have a greater risk of depression.

Comfort food could make us more depressed MIDDLE-AGED men eating a poor diet are at greater risk from depression.

A study by a university in Finland, of more than 2,000 men, found that those who ate more junk food, such as processed

meat and sugary drinks are more likely to suffer from depression.

The study found those who ate most vegetables, fruits, berries, whole grains, poultry, fish and low fat cheese suffered less symptoms and, during 13 years of

follow up, had a lower risk of suffering from depression.

In the UK, depression hits 19 per cent of people, with 21 per cent of women reporting symptoms and 16 per cent of men.

Love’s annoying little traits…

OMEN on the Costa Blanca, whilst deeply in love with their partners, didn’t have to think too long about what annoyed them most. “My list is far too long,” joked housewife Linda Williams, aged 27, from Dolores.

Whilst saying what was most annoying was often his lack of help around the house and with the children, she did get him to change his ways, even if she did have to nag a little.

“If he helps me I get it done quicker so we have more time together just the two of us.”

Lisa Yates from urbanisation Oasis, who runs a family restaurant, has not been quite so successful in getting her Spanish partner to change his annoying characteristics.

One of her biggest gripes is his getting a clean glass for every drink he has, even if it is the same drink and leaving the old cup lying around.

Autumn, time to turn over new leaf with a change in routine Is September the true start to the New Year and not January?

VER felt that September is the true start of the New Year - and not January?

The time when, after the long summer break, kids return to school and adults to work. So much so that, when I still lived and worked in the UK, I used to think of the day after the August Bank Holiday weekend as ‘back to school for adults.’

September always felt like a new start because of the change in routine (at least if you were in school or had kids in school).

Your day-to-day life got shaken up anyway so it seemed like a good time to make changes (that were hopefully improvements), initiate projects or get back to some things let go over the summer. A time of fresh starts, self-evaluation and reflection.

WATER SPILLS: Make for weird interview techniques.

Maybe even applying for that perfect job …

In my last column I wrote about a recent interview in the UK that one applicant at least found weird. Now, however weird interviews may get in this increasingly competitive job market, the main thing’s not to worry if things don’t always go to

plan. A friend once had an interview where the desk consisted of two semicircular tables shoved together, with a large jug of water right in the middle. A few minutes in, he was in full flow and leaned on the edge of the table as he stressed his point. The table wasn't secure,

however, so as he put his weight on the edge the middle bit twisted upwards and propelled the jug and its contents all over the interviewers. Everyone ploughed on bravely but he didn’t get the job.

Another mate’s throat dried up during a 15 minute presentation.

She asked for a glass of water.

Tricky wait while one of the interviewers went to get it. She then spilled it over her overhead transparencies. Which ran, having been drawn with water-soluble pens so she could tweak them.

She got the job - assured that readiness to soldier steadfastly on after such a humiliating spectacle of incompetence gave her the edge.

Which reminds me of my own humiliating reply to one final interview question: “So, what three words best describe you?”…

“Very bad at maths” (Get it?).

Spanish people drink more beer SPANIARDS today drink more beer than in 2012, a study has revealed.

Beer represents an average 1.36 per cent of their shopping basket, that is 1.1 per cent more then last year, the study carried out by the Agriculture, Food, and Environment ministry claims.

The amber nectar is the favourite drink for the summer months and December, unexpectedly beating the traditional cava during the Christmas holidays.

The average beer drinker in Spain is a father of two, aged between 35 and 64 years old.

By regions, Andalucia is where more beer is drunk in Spain, followed by Murcia, Castilla La Mancha and Extremadura.

Last on the list are Cantabria, Navarra and

Asturias, probably because local drinks like cider are more popular.

Non-alcoholic beer is not

very popular in Spain, the study claims. Only 1.6 litres in 10 litres consumed are alcohol free.

SUGAR is addictive.

That’s the conclusion from a group of French scientists who said that laboratory rats chose sugar over cocaine, despite being addicted to the drug.

Research shows that Britons consume, on average, almost 160 teaspoons of sugar each week and 60 grammes a day. Including natural sugars, that daily total rises to 93.5 grammes. Despite the high levels, according to the National Diet and Nutrition Survey, a rolling research programme that aims to give a yearly snapshot of our eating habits, we are now eating fewer sugary snacks.

However, it is the hidden sugars that are keeping levels high. “We have swapped sodas for smoothies and fruit juice and this is one of the worst things you can do,” says Anna Raymond, spokesman for the British Dietetic Association.

Making the most of your garden SEVERAL times during the past year we highlighted the fundamental need to design or redesign your garden to match your intended or evolving lifestyle here in Spain.

Fire service costing town hall jobs WORKERS at Albox Town Hall have responded to the announcement of job losses and wage cuts by pointing to the free service that the town’s firemen provide to the whole area.

Fifty workers have seen their salary reduced by up to 20 per cent and between six and eight workers will be laid off due largely to a service provided by the town for the

whole region. It is a service that costs Albox residents €500,000, and is something that should come to an end, according to the workers.

The Workers Committee said: “We asked for a meeting months ago with the Government of Almeria and the Workers Union to find a permanent solution to who pays for the Regional Consortium for the Firefighters and still

have no answers and no date.

“If nothing is resolved soon we intend to start a protest campaign with the first protest already taken place outside the town hall.

“They are playing with our wages and taking bread out of the mouths of our children. We are not going to allow it and we will do whatever is necessary.”

Masterchef signing books ALBOX Masterchef winner Juan Manuel Sanchez was in the Mediterranean Shopping Centre in Almeria City last Friday to sign copies of his cookery book.

The book continues to be amongst the best sellers

and features many exclusive recipes that up until now have only been tried by his family such as his Gazpacho.

Juan attended the recent opening of the Beach Club Malamar in Cala Tapa de

Montgat de Mar in Barcelona where he was presented as the new chef of the Bilbao Berria chain.

He will take up his position after his studies at the Cordon Bleu school of Cookery in Madrid.

The opening was attended by 400 guests and co-owner Rafael Viar.

After the opening Juan and his girlfriend Alicia were invited by Rafael Vilar and his wife Angela to spend some days in Ibiza and Formentera, having the opportunity to sample the gastronomic delights of the prestigious Beso Beach restaurant in Formentera as well as the Lio and Blue Marlin restaurants.

Racing to attention THERE are two sporting activities to enjoy in Albox over the weekend.

On Friday night the seventh night running race passes through the streets of the town starting at 10pm in the main square.

There are categories and races for all ages from the benjamin age group (8-9) years to veterans.

Inscription is up to one hour before the race with prizes for the first three in each category.

On Sunday, it is the ‘fun day of the bicycle’ with a family bike ride through the town. The starting point is outside the Bicibox shop on Calle Poeta Juan Berbel at 10am with registration at 9am.

It is recommended to wear a helmet. After the bike ride there will be breakfast and bicycle related games for the children.

ALBOX: The last plaque in the town now removed.

Franco’s final reminder gone ALBOX TOWN HALL has taken down the last Franco related plaque that remained in the town.

It was located on a residential building in the neighbourhood of La Loma. With the removal of the plaque, Albox Town Hall has complied with the Law of Historical Memory, which obliges the government team to remove shields, badges, plaques or anything that praises the military uprising, the Civil War and the repression under the Franco dictatorship.

The Mayor of Albox, Rogelio Mena, recalled that ‘as an institution, the town is required to reaffirm democratic values’ and said that “in addition to a legal obligation to remove Francoist symbols it is also a moral, ethical and political obligation.

“Spanish society as a whole suffered 40 years of dictatorship and lack of freedom, in a period when people were persecuted, imprisoned, and even killed, for their ideas, their beliefs or their sexual orientation.”

It’s coffee time TOMORROW (Friday) Albox is taking part in the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning in aid of cancer charity McMillan Nurses UK. The event starts at noon in the Rambla Los Marcelinos. The Rambla is situated off the Albox to Taberno road, just up from the Travellers Inn heading towards Taberno. The entrance will be signposted from the main road. The organiser of the event, Angela, is requesting that all stall holders arrive at the venue for 10am to allow plenty of time to set up the stalls in order to be ready for the visitors.

Angela would also be very grateful if all visitors could bring their own cups to cut down on costs on what should be a great day out for all.

As summer ends the litter louts are back!

By Tony Matthews THE summer holidays are over, the tourists have gone back home... so lo and behold, the rubbish dumpers have returned and this photograph tells its own story!

This ‘tip’ is situated bang on the main road between Turre and Mojacar, and it has ‘returned’ just two months after my wife and I had completely cleaned this specific area to make it look respectable for visitors.

However, the locals - and I know who they are - have again made this piece of land an eyesore for the second time this year... and rubbish is still being dumped there, albeit it small portions, despite there being a bin nearby.

We all know that there are scores of people (many of them youngsters rather than golden oldies) who are out of work... so why can’t the local authorities get

THE TIP: Rubbish just dumped. hold of a gang, employ them on a short-term agreement and make them clear up the litter, paying them a few euros for their efforts.

My wife and I, and some of our reliable helpers, have been doing it for nothing over the last two years and now I’m getting rather

sick and tired of seeing litter, trash, rubbish, whatever, getting dumped all over the place yet again, by inconsiderable, nasty, messy, half-soaked, disgusting and certainly bone idle people (if you can call them that), especially those who can’t bother to lift the lid of a bin.

The items in this load of trash (in this picture) includes used nappies, torn mattresses, bed sheets, part of a sofa, tin cans, bottles, children’s schoolwork and even some photographs (perhaps of the litter louts themselves).

Surely someone in authority can sort this out? I thought I had conquered litter dumping in my area. I admit that certain parts of Turre and Mojacar are looking smart, litter-free, but there are still some horrid areas which need addressing. I am willing to clean the rubbish up... for a small fee.

Might the council consider my request, or even employ some out-of-work folk to do it for me?

Another day sees us in the mountains above Costa del Sol at the impressive mountain town of Ronda. This unique town is split in two by a stunning gorge from which there are the most memorable views of the valley.

One side of the town is very old and offers buildings which have survived over several centuries. The other half is a little more modern and centres round the bullring.

A small town square centred round a church and a fountain leads out along narrow cafe lined streets which offer shade to relax in, or to wine and dine in. This magic town has a

Not finished yet, we still have Malaga to see. A city which nowadays is mainly associated with its nearby airport which gulps in millions of sun seeking tourists every year, but which has a history to match that of any other Spanish town. Its position on the south coast attracted many cultures.

The Phoenicians, Romans,

Visigoths, Carthaginians, the collection of tribes known as the Moors and of course the Christians led by the Catholic monarchs all settled here. Many of them left behind evidence of their time in Malaga. A Roman amphitheatre, a Moorish palace

and a magnificent cathedral amongst many more examples.

The City of Malaga is second only to Sevilla in Andalucia and still revolves round these historical markers of its colourful past. Also born here was the famous artist Pablo Picasso. His house can still be visited We think that Malaga will both surprise and delight you with its diversity.

New Nissan X-Trail makes world debut BUILDING on Nissan’s respected 4x4 heritage, the new Nissan X-Trail made its world debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Jaguar unveils crossover THE all new C-X17, Jaguar’s first ever sports crossover concept vehicle, was unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The C-X17 has been created as a design study to introduce Jaguar’s new aluminium monocoque architecture, which will underpin the future of the Jaguar brand.

This architecture is high-strength, lightweight, extremely stiff and incorporates innovative efficiency technology, the manufacturer claims.

“The C-X17 sports crossover represents an exciting new direction for Jaguar. Its purpose is to highlight our all-new aluminium architecture,” said Adrian Hallmark, Global Brand Director at Jaguar.

Power will be provided by engines with a wide range of capacities and output, all offering the latest innovations in fuelefficient technologies without sacrificing drivability, sources at Jaguar claim.

Ryder Cup at Aguilon THE annual match between the Spanish and UK expatriates team will take place at Aguilon Golf on November 9 and 10.

There are 28 qualifying places available to all societies for the team.

The competition will begin with three qualifying rounds at Aguilon using a stableford format with the top 28 scored selected to play in the team.

This will include a full handicap plus the slope allowance and players can opt to play in one, two or all three of the qualifiers and their highest score will be chosen.

Qualifiers will be held on Friday September 27 tee time 9am to 11am, Friday October 11 - tee time 10am to noon and Monday October 21 - tee time 10am to noon.

The costs for nonmembers is €25 including buggy for the first round and €15 including buggy to play in two or three rounds, Aguilon members pay usual green fees.
