Mystery of vanishing Garrucha red prawns FISHERMEN have been hard-hit by the ‘overnight’ disappearance of the famous local red prawn. The mystery of the missing Garrucha red prawn does not appear as if it is due to be resolved anytime soon. For more than a month the few trawlers operating from the port are returning from the shellfish grounds without any prawns on board or, at most, three or four that fit in one hand. The scarcity of the popular shrimp, which retails for approximately €70 a kilo, is causing disruption to the fishing fleet and local restaurants. Saying farewell TURRE has said farewell to one of its former mayors, Martin Grima Grim, 89, who died recently. He was in office from 1980 to 1983. Several mayors from the surrounding areas attended his funeral to pay their respects.

and I have never come across a situation this bad.” These sentiments were echoed by Luis Gea, Head of Galindo Gea. “I’ve never seen this, there have been bad times catching five or six kilos, but never when the shrimp has completely disappeared overnight.” The situation has meant that some fishing boats from Almeria have been
selling Alboran Island prawns at the Garrucha fish auction. The unprecedented shortage of seafood is equally affecting all the traditional fishing grounds and the fishermen have contacted Andres Garcia, the government subdelegate, who has expressed his desire to promote any initiative that might help to overcome this crisis.
SIGNS have been put up throughout the city of Almeria to guide locals and visitors to the Casa del Cine Museum, Calle Camino Romero, 2. The museum opens its doors Wednesday to Sunday, from 10am–2pm and 4pm–7pm.
