Alicante’s main roads in these months, there were just four serious accidents.

This is a huge improvement on last year

when there were 10 accidents and 10 deaths on the province’s main roads.

Across the whole of the Valencian Community, 12 people lost their lives in 10 accidents on the main roads between July 1 and midnight on August 31.

This translates into 65 per cent fewer accidents in the region’s three provinces and a 60 per

cent reduction in fatalities compared with the 2012 summer season.

During the same two months last year, there were 29 accidents and 30 deaths, said the General Traffic Directorate (DGT).

The heartening reduction, with figures comparable to the 1960s when there were far fewer cars on the road, was repeated in Castellon.

Not guilty, claims convicted abuser CONVICTED paedophile Daniel Galvan has denied sexually abusing a Torrevieja girl.

Galvan, who was serving a 30-year sentence in a Morocco jail, returned to Spain after erroneously receiving a royal pardon and is now remanded in Soto del Real prison (Madrid).

He was brought before a Torrevieja judge to answer claims that he abused the girl, now 14, between 2004 and 2006, while he lived in Torrevieja. The girl said nothing about the abuse until Galvan left, but her family recognised Iraqiborn Galvan, who now has Spanish nationality, from the media attention surrounding the case.

In the Marina Alta where the latest ‘gota fria’ left more than 200 litres of rain in 48 hours, a Cumbres de Sol road turned into a raging torrent. A family of four from the Basque Region were

trapped in their car and had to be freed by the Local Police and a SVS rescue team.

Further south in the Alacanti district, Albufereta Beach was closed after storm drains failed to cope with the monsoon-like downpour, spewing rats, rubbish and debris on to the sand.

Then the rain abated, skies cleared, beaches reopened and life returned to normal.

HAUL: Police seize number plates, cash and weapons.

Armed robbery gang detained FOUR men, all Spanish, have been arrested for their alleged involvement in an armed robbery last April.

Believed to be members of an Elche-based gang, they are accused of having tied up an elderly couple in Monforte del Cid before ransacking their home.

The robbers made off with jewellery worth €6,000, leaving the 77year-old man and his wife, aged 72, still bound hand and foot.

A Guardia Civil search of

six properties in Torrellano, Elche and Crevillente uncovered €30,000 in cash, a handgun and an airgun as well as several replica firearms and a stun gun.

Number plates from different countries were also found, as well as a topof-the range car that had been reported as stolen, Guardia Civil sources said.

Officers also found several mobile phones which the gang allegedly used only when carrying out the robberies.

Locals conquer the Himalayas CAROLA TRAPAGA and Jose Villegas recently climbed the Stok Kangri mountain in the Himalayas.

Stok Kangri is the highest peak of the Stok mountain range in the Ladakh region of Northwest India.

Trapaga and Villegas are respectively President and Vice-president of Club Centre Excursionista i de Muntanya de Teulada-Moraira.

A campaign at the end of this month will urge the 10,000 or so people who spend more than six months in the town to add themselves to the municipal rolls or padron.

The installation outside Alicante City cannot be sold without the EU’s Competition Commission co-operation and matters move slowly in Brussels, said the regional government’s vicepresident Jose Ciscar.

Last year the EC concluded that €265 million of regional government funding “was not provided on market conditions and should be repaid by the beneficiary.”

No private investor would have invested on the same terms, regional government money, the EC continued.

ruling and awaits a verdict from the European courts.

Farewell summer courses IT was farewell to summer for 624 pupils from Altea’s Cursets d’Estiu.

All had attended 29 courses offered by the town hall’s Sports and Youth department.

Inline-skating, rugby and kung-fu were available for the first time, plus the customary courses that included riding, canoeing, rowing, paddle-surf, and synchronised swimming.

The pupils spent the last day of the Cursets together, demonstrating the skills and sports they learnt this summer.

It was farewell to summer in more than one sense, as long-awaited rain had set in, although the skies cleared in time for the pupils’ celebrations.

Sad clues to old heartbreak ARCHAEOLOGISTS have discovered the tomb of a mother and her unborn child at Calpe’s Pobla d’Ifac.

The woman was buried in the 14th century and was probably seven or eight months’ pregnant when she died, according to Jose Luis Menendez, archaeologist at Alicante’s MARQ museum and director of the dig.

“Now we must discover the cause of death, but this is very interesting from an anthropological point of view,” Menendez said.

A very young child’s remains were found just outside the Pobla burial ground. The infant died before it was christened, Menendez ventured, and according to the beliefs of the time could not be buried in consecrated ground.

Stolen goods recovered THREE Romanians have been arrested and charged with robberies in Benidorm and Polop.

Guardia Civil officers carrying out a routine search found builders’ tools and gardening equipment hidden inside their large van.

The items were stolen from several properties including a house on the outskirts of Benidorm and two Polop industrial estates.

The stolen objects can be seen at the Guardia Civil headquarters in Calle La Mar 129 in Altea from 9am to 2pm from Monday to Friday.

They will be returned to owners who made a formal complaint to the police at the time of theft.

Line 2 is up and running THE Line 2 tram between Alicante’s Luceros station and San Vicente started operations yesterday (Wednesday).

After a delay of nearly two years, this was finally a day ahead of its latest schedule.

The new service is expected to be used each day by thousands of students who attend the San Vicente university campus.

Although the line has not been privatised and will be administered by the regional government’s FGV railway authority, security is handled by a private firm.

The route crosses some of the rougher neighbourhoods of Alicante City and San Vicente, and the security guards on board the trams will collaborate with the ticket-collectors to maintain safety.

JAVEA Town Hall will pay three months’ Social Security payments for 100 newly-contracted workers to local businesses.

The initiative is a bid to encourage the companies to take on more employees.

Creama, the Marina Baja Consortium for Economic Activity and Recovery, will select 100 people to complete three

months of theory and work experience in bars, restaurants and hotels.

Companies which engage the trainees on a contract of at least six months will have their Social Security quotas paid by the town hall for the first three months.

“The key to this programme is to achieve collaboration between the administration and private enterprise,” said

Public Works Councillor Juan Luis Cardona.

all those who are registered on the padron or municipal roll.

Fiesta tweet panned AN organiser of Villajoyosa’s town fiestas was in trouble for complaining about more modest celebrations.

Jaume Lloret is on the committee of the Asociacion Santa Marta which coordinates the town’s annual Moors and Christians fiestas.

Having indirectly criticised events in Villajoysa’s Pati Fosc area on Twitter, referring to them as ‘neighbourhood fiestas that think they’re the town’s fiesta’ Lloret then went too far.

“Lord give me patience, because if I had a gun I’d shoot the Pati Fosc DJ,” he tweeted.

Pati Fosc residents resented the insinuation that they were not entitled to dance into the early hours and Lloret was censured for disparaging the town’s other fiestas.

He has now apologised for his comments.

DRUG SMUGGLING: An airport baggage search revealed five kilos of cannabis.

Man jailed for Southampton Airport smuggling attempt A MAN, 44, has been jailed for 12 months for attempting to smuggle five kilos of cannabis into the UK from Malaga.

The drugs had an estimated street value of €70,670.

Southampton Crown Court heard that in May, Border Force officers at Southampton International Airport stopped Nicholas Giles when he arrived on a flight from Malaga.

Region’s first IVF baby is 25 RAFAEL DAVID, the Valencian Community’s first IVF baby, has celebrated his 25th birthday.

All those years ago, his childless parents were considering adopting but approached the Instituo Bernabeu on learning about the technique.

The procedure was a challenge, admitted Dr Rafael Bernabeu, because 25 years ago society was hostile towards assisted reproduction.

“The practice was considered almost evil,” he recalled, “and couples suffered in silence.”

Rafael David, named after the doctor who made his birth possible, is a Law student and sees nothing unusual about IVF, having grown up with it.

OFFICERS of the Catalan regional police have arrested a man in Barcelona for allegedly putting a four-year-old girl into boiling water. The accused, 23, reportedly caused second and third degree burns to the girl he was taking care of. He is said to have immersed her three times in boiling water as a punishment.

The girl was admitted to the Vall d’Hebron hospital with burns on her legs and feet and at the time of going to press was waiting for surgery.

The wife of the accused, the girl’s godmother, was also reported to the courts by police.

Fair supports victims of domestic violence THE first Multicultural Fair has been held in Calpe.

Organised by the Women In Business (WIB) group in conjunction with the town hall, the fair attracted visitors to the Plaza Mayor, who enjoyed an afternoon of live and varied entertainment on the main stage, whilst viewing crafts and stalls and giving local charities the opportunity to raise their profile and funds.

The WIB stand held a tombola to generate funds, which will be used to support local organisations to help victims of domestic violence. “We also raise money for the local food bank and have already donated €1,200 to them,” explained President Maria

raised for The Friends Of The Children Of Emaus from both performances to €2,552.

Gillian Hodges, Philip Ashley, Christopher Farrow and Amanda Wright, performed a selection of music from shows like Jesus Christ Superstar, Oliver, Mary Poppins, La Cage Aux Folles and Les Miserables.

Carole Saunders, President of The Friends of the Children of Emaus, expressed her thanks to both the host at Finca Jacaranda and Amadeus for their continued efforts in helping to raise funds for this worthwhile cause.

The money raised will be going to help pay for school supplies for the children when they resume their studies later in the month.

Amadeus can next be seen in action with a larger cast of 12 singers/actors at the Casa de Cultura in Benissa on September 25 and 26 in the musical murder/ mystery The Sound Of Murder.

Poverty is not just about income it’s about what is done with the money. Accommodation, nutrition and education should of course be priorities, rather then spending a fortune on fancy flat-screen TVs, designer pit bull dogs,

cigarettes and alcohol. And this is stellar advice relevant for every level of income.

But going back to the ‘stale bread’ comment, learning how to cook can make a big difference to a budget and a person’s health.

And cooking fresh food doesn’t have to be a challenge or terribly expensive with a little bit of know-how.

So rather than stocking up on expensive convenience food and microwave dinners, maybe it’s an idea to invest in a good basic cookbook and a little bit of enthusiasm in the kitchen.

And by the way, stale bread as it happens, is the best ingredient for toast, tasty soup croutons and of course here in Andalucía, the totally inexpensive and delicious salmorejo dish!

Loan deal to pay for new meters THE European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Spanish electric utility company Iberdrola have signed a loan contract for €200 million.

The loan will support the modernisation of the electricity distribution network throughout Spain, improving its overall reliability and safety, they claim.

The loan will co-finance a comprehensive investment programme designed to reinforce and modernise Iberdrola’s electricity distribution network. A large number of supply points in the full range of voltages operated by Iberdrola will be connected to the existing network.

Furthermore, the programme will help pay for the installation of new digital electricity meters to meet Spanish legislation, which requires the deployment of digital meters for residential customers by 2018.

The investment programme provides for the installation of up to 1.8 million new meters.

The EIB has a long-standing relationship with Iberdrola, one of the largest power distribution companies in Spain, serving 10.7 million customers. The EIB has provided a total of €3.6 billion for projects in Spain since the beginning of the year, of which almost €1 billion is in the Spanish energy sector.

Leaving the country in search of work

ONO is to take on Europe

MORE and more of Spain’s young are leaving the country in search of work.

The numbers of Spaniards under the age of 30 emigrating has gone up by 40.9 per cent since the economic crisis first hit Spain in 2008, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE).

And the number of people in the 30 to 34 year age group has risen by 41.4 per cent.

In total 14,084 of the 59,724 Spaniards who left the country in 2012 were aged between 20 and 34.

But that figure is dwarfed by the numbers of non-Spaniards who moved away.

In total 476,748 people left Spain.

That is because many

Shoppers need to look out for more than the bargains WHILE with my family shopping in the Chinese shop on the road from Quesada to Benijofar, I was approached by five men of either Russian or East European origin.

All were tall, in their 30s, and one asked for help reaching some goods.

I then realised a man behind had opened my bag and removed my purse.

Though aged 70, I gave chase and got it back, and other family members then gave chase as the would-be thieves made their escape in a silver Volkswagen Passat.

I was not the only person in the shop to be robbed.

The shop staff - although they had it on CCTV - did not even call the police.

All shoppers should be aware.

No warning signs I READ with interest ‘Signs needed over crime threat’ (Letters Issue 1469).

I was subjected to a major theft of my bag, losing passports, driver’s licence, credit cards, keys, and money while shopping in the Mercadona supermarket in the central commercial centre, La Marina, Finestrat.

Only due to my insistence were the police called, and the shop did not even take my details, acting as though it was normal for thefts, though there were no warning signs in the area.

Time for action I AGREE with Allen Everington (Letters Issue 1469) that it is about time something was done about the misuse of parking bays for the disabled.

The police should carry clamps in their cars and as they also patrol on foot, should also have nearby access to them so that any vehicle not displaying a ‘Disabled’ sticker is automatically clamped and the owner fined when they go to get the clamp removed.

Once put into effect people would stop wrongly parking in these bays.

At the Javea Arenal Beach car park about 10 days ago, a motor-cycle policeman stopped to check my blue badge when I was sitting in my car, but a van with hazard lights flashing being unloaded by an able-bodied man parked in two disabled spots was ignored.

Lack of service DAYS after reading ‘Passport help’ (Letters, Issue 1469) praising a company for acting professionally, I found myself visiting Puerto Banus, Marbella, on a shopping trip.

While I expect to pay a higher price in such surrounds, it would be nice if good service came with the price... and it definitely did not at the port-side café where my wife and I sat to enjoy a drink and watch the world go by.

I ALWAYS look forward to reading the EWN when on holiday in Spain; however, on many occasions I come away with the impression of an antiCatholic agenda from some contributors.

One recent article amounted essentially to a pro-abortion rant, attacking Catholic teaching on this subject.

In reality, the Catholic Church quite reasonably supports the scientific fact that a newly-conceived child in the womb is a unique individual with a unique DNA, which will be retained throughout its life (assuming it is lucky enough to escape the none too tender mercies of the abortionist, back street or high street).

I come from Ireland, a country which until recently (although that is about to change, thanks to the abortion lobby and a campaigning/ biased media) disallowed abortion.

Incidentally, the so-called Catholic ‘dark ages’ (a favourite cliché of the historically ignorant) were a period of unprecedented human achievement; Oxford and Cambridge Universities being two notable high points.

The rot set in in the 16th century, about the time of the Protestant Reformation!

Am I wrong in thinking they create more children who go on to create more children and so on? The problem gets worse as most of the areas that they live in can’t support their needs and they are in constant need of food aid so they become aid reliant, not unlike some areas of the UK. And to add to that we have to save their animals, too - lions, rhinos donkeys, etc - thus they become benefit reliant.

The point of this message is who benefits most? The charity business, the monster behind all these good deeds. Still one good thing comes from all this, we will never run out of lookylooky men.

I WANT to comment on the ‘Stop complaining letter’ (Issue 1468).

It is a pity Clive Graham gets annoyed when he hears people complaining about Spain.

People have a right to complain not only about Spain but England also.

I was advised to come here on health grounds. I also survived the Second World War and its aftermath and was in a Cromwell tank.

If people want to complain let them do so, for believe me they have plenty to complain about.

Changes To Succession Tax In Valenciana

The local Valenciana Government has announced changes to the regional succession tax rules.

This could mean that your heirs, including your spouse, have to pay more tax when they inherit your assets.

Succession tax is charged on gifts and inheritances. It applies if the assets are located in Spain (regardless of residence of beneficiary), or if the beneficiary is resident in Spain (in which case it applies to worldwide assets).

Succession tax is governed by both the State and Autonomous Communities.

Each community has the right to amend the State rules to make them more beneficial. Several have done so, including Valenciana (Valencia, Alicante and Castellón provinces).

Your assets can only benefit from the local rules if you are “habitually resident” in the region, i.e. living here for the five years up to the chargeable event.

Otherwise the pernicious State rules apply.

Spain has been referred to the European Commission for discriminatory treatment of residents and non-residents living in the EU, but so far the rules have not changed.

By Robert Croizat, Senior Partner, Blevins Franks Valenciana rules Under State rules, the personal taxfree allowance for spouses and direct line relatives is just €15,957. In Valenciana it has been higher at €40,000.

With effect from 7th August 2013, the allowance has increased to €100,000.

It is not all good news. In 2007 the Valenciana Government introduced a 99% reduction in the tax payable on inheritances received by spouses and direct line relatives - provided they are habitually resident in the region.

With effect from 7th August, this 99% reduction is lowered to 75%.

In the case of gifts, this reduction had a limit of €420,000 per estate, with gifts from the previous five years taken into account.

This limit is now reduced to €150,000.

The overall effect is that many people will pay more succession tax under the new rules.

This also applies to spouses inheriting from each other, since there is no exemption between spouses in Spain. So if you own a property equally in joint names, when you die and leave your 50% share to your husband or wife, they will have to pay succession tax on this 50%. Although the personal allowance has been increased, the lower 75% reduction could result in considerably more tax depending on the total amount being inherited.

In spite of the changes, the regional Valenciana rules remain more

favourable than the State ones. This will only apply if you have been continuously resident here for the five years before your death or the date you make a gift. You would need to be registered and paying tax here to be able to prove it.

Note that in the case of Valenciana, for the 75% reduction to apply, your beneficiaries also need to have been habitually resident here at the time (the only exception is for disabled relatives). If your children are not living here, they do not benefit.

The above changes were announced as part of the Decree Act of the Valencia Government (4/2013), published on 6th August 2013.

These changes underline the ongoing financial pressures that continue to persist within national and local government, and which can result in higher taxes.

They highlight the need for people to arrange their financial affairs today, to best position themselves for the future.

Democracy at work restoring the credibility of politicians

considers himself something of an atheist, but he is nevertheless a man born of pure Jewish stock.

Therefore, to my mind his decision to vote against attacking a Muslim country, which is utterly anti-Jewish and would side with Iran in its quest to obliterate Israel at the drop of a turban, also gives quite a boost to his own credibility.

It did get me thinking that if the leader of the Labour party had been a Muslim (which I’ve no doubt they will be one day!) and Israel had been suspected of committing some unacceptable act, would that person have reacted with such an unbiased opinion? Somehow I think not.

Having said all that, despite this week’s decision to stay out, should Assad take it as a weakening attitude by the West and its allies, and therefore give him carte blanche to massacre and commit atrocities at will, I am fully in favour of another parliamentary vote on the situation.

With that may come on him and his cohorts all the force and retribution of a reversed decision.

Let’s hope it never comes to that.

WELL, what a result!

Firstly, of course, I was delighted to see the British House of Commons finally took Leapy’s advice and voted against interference in Syria’s problems. (Any time, fellas!)

Secondly, the result was a wonderfull example of British democracy in full glorious flow.

In most countries, particularly those of the Middle East, a result of this nature would have probably led to disgruntled losers rioting and spilling blood in the streets.

Far from being an embarrassing rout for David Cameron, I think the dignified and immediate acceptance of a result he clearly hadn’t been looking for, showed a strong, highly democratic leader bending, without recrimination or derogatory reactions, to the will of Parliament’s EAPY EE elected members.

Lack of jobs - not spirit - to blame!

Do you feel that many of the young who are out of work in Spain lack the true grit to get jobs, as indicated for their counterparts in a UK-based report?

F

INDING work for the young is a tough challenge in Spain, and though some jobless are not as hungry as they might be to find employment, the economic situation is making life very difficult for them, according to many expatriates.

Meanwhile, a UK government minister has revealed that almost half of Britain’s jobless aged 1624 are not seeking work and are classed as economically inactive.

Katherine Pate and Patricia Johnston, two retirees who now work as charity shop volunteers in Arroyo de la Miel on the Costa del Sol, feel that rather than showing true grit, the current working climate in Spain makes finding work a struggle for young people.

“I think it’s very difficult for young people in Spain, according to what you hear in the news,” said Katherine. “A lot of the young ones don’t have any money and the parents don’t have any money. That’s why a lot of them go to England to find jobs.”

AMY REALEY: Students are graduating, yet struggling to find work.

Patricia agrees. “I think young people find it very difficult to find jobs. I think the government could do a bit more to get them out working, even volunteering, anything to gain experience.”

Amy Realey, a 20-year-old student nurse from the UK on holiday in Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca, says finding work is difficult for young people everywhere as there “is not much work out there, anywhere. Some friends have finished university

The crisis has hit Spain worse than anywhere else, shops are closing, people are taking things out of bins, and it’s awful.”

Matt Taylor, a roofer from the Scottish borders visiting his holiday home in Formentera del Segura in Costa Blanca believes young people in Spain are more likely to go out and find work.

“Youngsters here are different, they seem better behaved and more family orientated and if they get a job hold it and work hard.”

But John Poole who runs a kitchen fitting business on the Costa Blanca disagrees, saying the general attitude towards work is not what it used to be. “Kids these days are too distracted by computers and television. They seem to think work will just fall on their laps. In my day you had to work and work hard to survive.

There is always work if you work hard enough to find it.”

And Roy Groves of Torre in Almeria feels although things are tough, in the main those that really want to work can find jobs.

“Some Spanish I know have taken unpaid jobs just to get work experience.”

A clue to infertility HIGH prolactin level, also known as Hyperprolactinemia, is a possible cause of infertility in women.

Prolactin is a hormone the pituitary gland releases into the body, to assist in the production of milk after childbirth. This elevated prolactin is the reason why nursing mothers rarely become pregnant.

However, high prolactin levels in women that are not pregnant can prevent pregnancy from occurring

because it can interfere with ovulation, causing hormonal imbalance, irregular periods and lack of ovulation.

Prolactin levels should be (for non-pregnant females) 2 - 29 ng/ml (nanograms per millilitre), and a simple blood test will show if the prolactin is normal or high.

Symptoms of high prolactin in women include production of breast milk not related to pregnancy or childbirth, lower sex drive and absence of period.

UK’s Greek yoghurt tangle THE UK Greek yoghurt market is suffering from an identity crisis.

A ruling passed by the UK High Court in April determines that only a yoghurt produced in Greece can be labelled as Greek, leading to confusion among consumers.

Some producers have managed to adapt to this new situation by changing their labelling to ‘strained yoghurt.’ Such is the case of American producer Chobani, that they took advantage of these circumstances to introduce new flavours to the market.

Others, however, are finding more difficulties getting used to it.

Seattle-based developer Greased Watermelon LLC claims not only is this app an answer to food waste, but also a way to build relationships within a community.

RARE beefburgers can remain on restaurant menus after a judge rejected claims by food watchdogs that they are a health risk.

A London restaurant had been told to stop serving the burgers until they took certain safety precautions claiming they posed a potential risk, but the restaurant took the matter further and a judge threw out the ruling.

Called the ‘megaburgerpizza’ the experimental dish was created by Pizza Little Party and is made with 400g of beef burger patties with pickles, onions, cheese, meat sauce, ketchup and mustard sandwiched between two pizza crusts as buns. They say it offers the perfect option for fast food lovers who can’t decide between having a burger or pizza.

Hot chocolate benefits elderly AN apple a day may keep the doctor away, but so too could hot chocolate.

According to a study carried out at the Harvard Medical School in Boston drinking two cups of hot chocolate a day may benefit older people.

Hot chocolate is said to have improved the blood flow of those who participated in the study, thus improving their thinking skills.

The research involved 60 people who had two cups of cocoa per day for 30 days. The participants, with an average age of more than 70 years, did not consume any other chocolate during this time.

A Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) test carried out on some of the participants proved having two cups of hot chocolate a

THE economic crisis is forcing the Spanish Government to find new ways to raise funds.

The Ministry of Defence has put out for public auction nearly 30 commercial premises located in Madrid.

The sale of these premises could result in a profit of more than €5 million for the Spanish Government, according to an announcement made

by Defence Minister Pedro Morenes.

The Housing, Infrastructures and Defence Equipment Institute (Invied) will carry out the auction following a

closed envelope system and will accept proposals from September 12 to 27.

Dimensions of the premises range from 25.5 square metres for the smallest, to 411 square metres. Most of them are located in the Retiro district of Madrid.

The most expensive one can be found in Guzman el Bueno street, with a starting price of €684,000.

ON SALE: The Spanish Ministry of Defence is selling premises to raise funds.

Spain still a draw THE UK’s love affair with Spain continues unabated as UK holidaymakers accounted for nearly a quarter of all international visitors so far this year.

This is the highest number in almost two decades, according to the latest data from Frontur, the Spanish Tourism Ministry’s statistics agency.

Water tanks on the rise TURNING elevated water tanks into luxury residential towers has become an interesting practice in the UK In the last 10 years more than seven of these water tanks have been refurbished and turned into holiday homes located on the outskirts of the cities. Now this trend is going abroad with water tank houses in Berlin and Australia.

Architecture studios are normally behind these refurbishments as they see an interesting market niche and use these peculiar houses to display their creativity.

But these are just some of the reasons why some people have found themselves faced with hefty fines or in some cases arrested or detained abroad.

Every year Britons are caught out by local laws and customs which might seem harmless in the UK, but may carry

Such incidents can be easily avoided by researching travel destinations in advance and taking note of updates and warnings issued by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).

THE 2014 model year Jaguar XJ is the latest in a long line from the luxury car maker.

The sports saloon incorporates enhanced features to create a contemporary Jaguar.

The Jaguar XJ is offered with a choice of a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder i4 turbocharged petrol engine, diesel and supercharged petrol 3.0-litre V6 engines and four 5.0-

litre V8 petrol engines, one normally aspirated and three supercharged.

These engines are mated to Jaguar’s eight-speed automatic gearbox which offers a broad spread of ratios for a combination of smooth-shifting, economy and driver control.

The 2014 XJ, available later this year from €98,950, features a

range of enhanced interior features focused on the rear cabin of the car resulting in the most accomplished Jaguar luxury saloon, according to the manufacturer.

The rear passenger compartment of the 2014 LWB car includes two individual ‘airline style’ reclining seats which both feature cushion and squab adjustment, three massage programmes, lumbar adjustment and two memory settings for each seat.

The new centre armrest, which can be stowed in the upright position to allow the use of the centre seat, houses all the seat controls as well as the Front Seat Activation button which allows control of the front passenger seat from the rear.

Front seat enhancements include massage functions for each seat with five levels of intensity, allowing occupants to personalise their massage settings to their preference.

The XJ presents a varied palette of materials used on the interior. This includes Bond grain, soft grain and semi-aniline leather, and a wide choice of veneers including Piano Black, Carbon Fibre, Gloss Burr Walnut and Satin Rosewood.

It also features a range of wheels including the newly designed Manra 18inch lightweight forged alloy.

Spain will make new Ford S-Max FORD has revealed the new S-Max concept.

It is a new sport activity vehicle that will be produced at the manufacturer’s factory in Almusafes (Valencia) from the first third of 2015.

The new S-Max Concept employs the latest Ford global design language with a high mounted grille, swept-back headlamps and an exclusive treatment of the vehicle’s lower fascia.

And the original S-Max profile has been honed with the front bonnet sweeping into the front screen, which in turn flows into the arc of the roof to create a unique glass roof graphic.

This silhouette surrounds a spacious and versatile interior that offers anything from four-to seven-seat configurations.

Further exterior design cues include a feature line running along the side of the vehicle and distinctive headlamps featuring Organic LED. The S-Max Concept interior is an expression of design, convenience, connectivity, flexibility, and craftsmanship say the manufacturers.

The front cabin places the focus firmly on the driver. Shapes and forms combine in a high-set instrument panel that cuts back in the centre console.

Just to add to his prizes, Fred also was nearest the pin on the 16th while Michael Taylor claimed the prize on the third.

GARETH BALE has been unveiled as a Real Madrid player following a reported record €100 million deal to 20,000 fans at the Bernabeu stadium.

The player, who has left England’s Tottenham Hotspurs, went through the formality of a fitness test before he was officially presented to the fans and media as the latest ‘galactico’ to join Madrid .

The 24-year-old Welshman has joined superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, the previous transfer fee record holder, to provide what could be a fearsome duel wing partnership.
