TO TA L o f 1 7 3 migrants, and the body of a dead man, were salvaged by Maritime Rescue this week and taken to ports in Malaga and Almeria. The deceased male was pulled from the waters of the Alboran Sea, and it has been suggested he may have perished while trying to help fellow passengers after the boat they were travelling in began to sink. On receiving reports of a vessel in distress, Frontex aircraft was deployed and located the boat in the Moroccan zone. The maritime centre sent crews and a total of 56 people, together with the deceased, were taken to Malaga port by the Salvamar Hamal. A further 35 men of

Maghrebi origin, were later moved to the city harbour onboard search boat Salvamar Alnitik. Meanwhile, a craft carrying another 22 men was located by Salvamar Spica and its occupants were transferred to Almeria. Within the same 24hour period, 16 Algerian
male adults onboard a dinghy four miles east of
the Mirador de los Genoveses, in the waters of
Cabo de Gata, were salvaged after co-ordinators received a report from the Guardia Civil. In the same area, officers detected a boat called Lady Anne, which was not experiencing d i ff i c u l t i e s a n d w o u l d have apparently reached mainland unaided. Police are said to be dealing with the occupants. And during the early hours of the morning, a detachment of the Alboran Navy assisted 44 people, including children, who had made the journey in an inflatable boat. They were moved to the port of Almeria.
