Tops-off tourists in for a shock PEOPLE who stroll around Marbella this summer without a shirt on, or in a swimsuit, may be risking a hefty fine.

The issue of shirtless people (particularly tourists) in the city was a topic of much controversy last year, as locals were apparently unhappy with the situation.

As a result the council is taking action to ban naked torsos, and other measures are bad news for stag and hen do’s.

This is because it will also be prohibited to carry dolls, devices, symbols or products of a sexual nature.

Breaches of these new rules could lead to a fine of up to €750.

by John Smith READERS may remember that comedian Tony Hawks wrote a book and starred in a TV programme Round Ireland with a Fridge which he undertook as a drunken challenge.

Tomorrow (Saturday), Chris Grenfell a resident of El Rosario Marbella (near to the Costa del Sol Hospital) - who hasn’t read the book - will be setting off from Sinatra’s Bar in Puerto Banus on a 20-kilometre trek to Harmon’s Bar in Elviria to raise funds for charity.

This is the third time that Chris who has lived in Spain for 29 years has undertaken this walk, but if the distance isn’t far enough, for some reason he thought that it would attract more donations if he strapped a fridge weighing 35 kilos to his back.

As if that wasn’t enough, he is also going to fill it with cans of beer to take the total weight to 50 kilos and intends to stop en route and sell some of the cans to passers-by in order to try to increase the takings.

Particularly important to Chris is the fact that he will be raising money for the Song for Sue Foundation in partnership with brain tumour research and Worcestershire Headway Supporting life after brain injury as his mother died from a brain tumour.

TORREMOLINOS Council has received official notice of plans to transform the town’s Cercanias station, in the central Plaza de la Nogalera.

Renfe, the national railway company which operates the line which runs from Fuengirola to Malaga, has put the €7.5 million project out to tender.

However, deputy mayor, Maribel Tocon (PSOE) has expressed her party’s concerns about the new proposed entrance to the station, which she says “is in conflict with the commercial and cultural activities that take place in the plaza.”

The planned works aim to move the entrance in order to increase accessibility, while new lifts will be installed, platforms will be widened, and there will be new lighting and information boards.

by Tom Woods ADAPTIVE cycling champion Jose Angel A ceiton has been killed in a tragic road accident in his hometown of Hornachos, Extremadura.

I n a c r u e l t w i s t o f f ate i t comes exactly 17 years after his first major accident, when he was left a quadriplegic after a car ran over him when he was only 17 years old.

De te r m i n e d to fo l l o w h i s dream, Jose ’s passion for c ycling was unwavering and with t h e s u p p o r t o f h i s fa m i l y h e spent years dedicating himself to adaptive cycling.

T h e p e r s e ve ra n ce p a i d o f f when Jose claimed the Spanish Champion title two years ago w h e re h e s co o p e d t w o g o l d m e d a l s a n d a b ro n z e at a n event in Estepona, against 150 disabled athletes.

However, on March 28, Jose aged 34, had a head-on collision with a truck in the suburbs of Hornachos and died instantly.

The incident is still under investigation and happened on a straig ht stretch of road with apparently good visibility.

by John Smith THE Cudeca Foundation formally announced its pre-audit financial results for 2017 yesterday, (Thursday).

For the fifth year running it was in surplus and expects to carry over €47,736 to 2018 reserves, subject to annual audit by KPMG. The name Cudeca is an amalgam of three Spanish words Cuidados del Cancer (cancer care) and reflects the activities of this Benalmadena-based organisation, which last celebrated 25 years of caring for those with a terminal condition and their families.

Originally set up on a ‘shoestring’ by Joan Hunt OBE whose husband died from cancer, Cudeca introduced the concept of palliative care into the Costa del Sol, and since its inauguration it has cared for some 14,000 patients and their families.

From humble beginnings the centre now employs 70 professionals in all areas of healthcare, as well as relying on literally hundreds of willing volunteers, mainly women, of whom just over 60 per cent are now Spanish.

Initially, even the word cancer caused a negative reaction from the Spanish community, but as it became clear that the work being undertaken by the charity was so impor tant not just volunteers, but Spanish organisations including the Junta de Andalucia regional government, have

come on board with their financial support.

With a turnover of just under €4 million in 2017, Cudeca receives approximately €500,000 from the Junta , another €500,000 from legacies, €495,000 from their 20 charity shops, €200,000 from banks and the balance from donations and events.

The bulk of the expenditure goes on a number of care programmes with home care and inpatient care accounting for 80 per cent of the care budget, whilst a significant amount is spent on setting up the ever-expanding chain of charity shops as well as general fundraising exercises.

Special thanks were given to all of the volunteers who do so much to help keep the charity going, and representatives of Clinica Buchinger Wilhelmi were honoured by being presented with a Gold Pin in recognition of the work that they and their family had done to assist the charity.

It was also announced that with a generous donation from Dr Yusuf Hamied the first section of a brand new training centre for medical professionals on the Benalmadena grounds would be started this year.

This has been a dream of those behind the charity for years and whilst they will still need to obtain additional funds to complete the project, they will be able to raise the first building this year.

Water levels THE L a Concepcion reser voir has reached near full capacity after weeks of above average rainfall, according to data from the Environment Board.

The amount of water at the site is now estimated to be about 61 hectometres cubed (61 billion litres) as of this week. Its capacity is about 61.85 hm3.

T he reser voir, which supplies most of the Costa del Sol, has had to drain about 7.12 hm3, equivalent to the amount consumed in the province in a month.

HAMMER BLOWS: The victim’s ordeal in Marbella lasted six hours.

by Tom Woods THE National Police have arrested a man and a woman in Marbella for kidnap, violence with a hammer, and the theft of €3,000.

The couple, aged 33 and 30 respectively, allegedly sum-

moned the victim to a local house under the pretension of hiring a domestic worker.

On his arrival the unsuspecting man was set upon by three individuals (the third assailant is unidentified at present) and they forced him to hand over his credit card

and pin number.

After six hours of being held in the house and beaten with a hammer, the man was released and went straight to a hospital.

He had suffered trauma and fractures, and had to stay in the hospital for sev-

eral days to convalesce.

It was then that the victim discovered that €3,000 had been stolen from his account with the credit card.

The couple has been detained and investigations into their accomplice are ongoing.

Council accused of selling out local business

by Tom Woods BUSINESSES in Benalmadena are demanding ‘greater vigilance’ from the authorities against illegal street sellers, as the summer approaches.

Local representatives are to meet with the councillors for security in both Torremolinos and B enalmadena , as well as the heads of Local and National Police.

T he meeting has been convened by the Association of Merchants and Entrepreneurs of Benalmadena (ACEB), and all sides recognise the need for action after a police officer was attacked recently.

In fact the police in B enalmadena have issued a violence escalation war ning , and for greater caution around street vendors.

President of the ACEB, Rose Mar i a Gonz alez , emphasised that areas attempting to attract tourists “cannot afford to have this image” and urged the council to “stop making excuses and tackle the problem.”

She has also made contact with representatives of the Senegalese community, many of whom are keen to reach an a g reement where sellers can operate legally.

Illegal street selling can attract criminal networks which exploit immig rants who do not have proper documentation, forcing them to work long hours and threatening them with arrest.

Councillor for the PP, Juan Antonio Lara, criticised the PSOE for allowing “unfair competition that puts local businesses at risk” and for “ being unable to solve a problem which is now out

of hand.”

T he C itizens par ty has also waded into the debate, claiming that the vendors ‘occupy public space in a disorderly, arbitrary and uncontrolled manner, taking over much of the promenades and the rest areas for their wares.’

ACEB President Rose Mar ia Gonzalez, added: “For months we have be en asking the council to make provisions in its budget to pay police officers overtime, as appare n t l y i t c a n n o t i n c re a s e i t s workforce.”

Children’s book day has a happy ending ORGANISED by the Culture Department of Cartama Council, the event ‘Air Book’ has celebrated all that is good about children’s literature.

With the support of the Network of Public Libraries, the event took place at Parque El Castillo and there was a large turnout of people of all ages.

The public were encouraged to bring their books from home, but were also invited to take some from the library stands and read them in the park.

In addition, the younger children dressed up as fictional characters as the adults read out stories, and the park was decorated with coloured drawings too.

GOING IN CIRCLES: Local businesses are seen to see a resolution.

Tivoli World gets caught up in ownership wrangle A PLANNED expansion of Tivoli World in Benalmadena is on hold due to an ongoing legal battle.

The popular amusement park in Arroyo de la Miel is the subject of a dispute between the current owners of the site, developers Tremon, and the former owner, the Cordoba businessmen known as Sandokan.

Tremon, which intends to expand the park in a €300 million project to include leisure areas and a shopping centre,

bought it as part of a large takeover of land across Andalucia.

However, Sandokan is allegedly insisting that the sale has not gone through having not received all the monies, so the status of the park remains in limbo.

To complicate matters, a company affiliated to Sandokan is still involved in the day-to-day running of Tivoli World, although the businessman himself started a five-year prison sentence in December for

tax-related crimes.

It is unsurprising that the stalling of the project and the pending arrival of a major shopping centre in Torremolinos is a cause for concern for business owners in Benalmadena.

President of the town’s business association, Rose Maria Gonzalez, has urged Tremon to resolve the issue as “people are already going to Malaga or Fuengirola to shop, and the problem is only going to get worse.”

Costa campaigns raise awareness OPERATIONS for skin cancer grew 30 per cent last year on the Costa del Sol. The overall figure in 2017 of 1,064 surgical procedures is triple the national average, making the region one of the most prevalent areas in the country for this treatment.

Factors such as the sheer amount of sunshine each year, the increase in population (especially foreigners), and the publicisation of awareness campaigns, are important in explaining the situation.

Magdalena de Troya, a director of Costa del Sol hospital, has commented that one positive to draw from this is the early diagnosis of melanomas in patients, as people have become more informed about the need for check-ups.

JOSE LUIS CANAVATE, President of the Scientific Committee of the City Foundation in Marbella, has highlighted transport as the biggest current problem facing the Costa del Sol. The Costa’s figures for private motorists on its roads are among the highest in the world.

At a conference of technicians and engineers to discuss the issue, Mr Canavate stressed that urban planning and transport should be planned in complete tandem, and not treated as separate entities.

He added that the problems arising from traffic and other transport issues are urgent, and cannot wait for the opening of the proposed railway.

OFFICERS from the National Police are investigating an attack on a beach club in Estepona which saw one of the security guards tied up and the premises set on fire.

A hooded gang burst into the establishment at about 3am on Sunday morning and beat one of the doormen, before dragging him outside.

Another member of the security staff at Heaven beach club in Guadalmansa managed to escape and raise the alarm.

Only two security guards were on the premises but the club had already closed to the public when a group of hooded men broke in.

After tying up the doorman, the gang beat him and stole his valuables be fore setting a mattress on fire.

By the time the emergency services arrived at the scene the building was bur ning strongly and despite efforts to tackle it the flames spread quick ly and the premises were completely destroyed.

A police investigation is under way to apprehend those responsible.

HASH CASH: Police raids saw them seize €135,000 in cash.

Cross-border drugs ring busted OFFICERS of the Guardia Civil have dismantled a Benalmadena-based criminal network which operated a drug trafficking ring between Spain and France.

Working with the Central Bureau for the Suppression of Illicit Traffic in Narcotics (OCRTIS) in Bordeaux, the Guardia Civil’s investigations led to the arrest of 17 people.

As part of operation ‘Clibano,’ police began inquiries last October when officers discovered that French residents in Malaga Province were transporting large amounts of hashish between the two countries by car or van.

At one stage officers detected a suspicious van in Algeciras, leading to a dangerous chase where several cars were damaged but which ended in Sevilla.

The Guardia Civil found 480 kilos of

hashish inside the vehicle and further investigations established that it was destined for Bordeaux.

Members of the criminal organisation travelled regularly from France to a residence located in a luxury hotel complex in Benalmadena, used as a ‘safe house.’

There they would pick up a hidden car which would be used for distributions to Malaga, Cadiz and Sevilla.

Operation ‘Clibano’ led to police raids of 10 homes in Spain and France after which 17 people were arrested and 1,020 kilos were seized.

In addition, 342 kilos of marihuana, 125 grams of cocaine, €135,000 in cash, four semiautomatic weapons, two shotguns, and 15 vehicles were confiscated.

Council agrees €100 million budget THE budget of Mijas Council has finally been agreed two weeks after the two ruling parties gained a majority with the support of one Podemos councillor.

Citizens and P S O E h av e f i nalised the budget which has risen to €100 million, des p i te a c o n s i d e r able fall in tax revenue.

T he outlook is more positive thanks to increased works and first occupation licences granted in the town.

Completion of many of these projec ts will see a marked increase in IBI land tax receipts, allowing for a €5 million reduction in taxes during this fiscal year.

Significant income will also be generated by the Club Polideportivo Mijas and the licence for refuse collection, the management of which will be put out to tender.

Although the budget is rising, the Infrastructure department will suffer a cut in funding from €8.4 million in 2017 to €3.3 million this year.

INDUSTRIOUS ACTIVITY: Mijas Council has bold ideas for the town.

Town prepares for industrial revolution MIJAS Council has announced plans to free up 700,000 square metres of land in the town for industrial development.

Mayor Juan Carlos Maldonado presented the project this week alongside Urbanisation councillor Andres Ruiz, and explained that the works would be focused on Camino de Campanales, Avenida de Mijas, La Torre and Entrerrios.

Some of these sites had been earmarked in the General Plan of Urban Planning, but others eg Entrerrios are a new opportunity for businesses.

Mayor Maldonado said: “The development of industry generates wealth in the town and the council is encour-

aging business to settle in our area.

“Mijas has a lot to offer and is well located at the heart of the Costa del Sol, with a good infrastructure.”

Mr Maldonado pointed out that Mijas attracts the confidence of investors because the council itself has a healthy balance sheet.

“We have seen the growth of the real estate sector in the town, and in the same way the future looks bright for industrial development,” he added.

Councillor Andres Ruiz agreed with Mr Maldonado and said that such initiatives open up the economy of Mijas, while diversifying it from a reliance on tourism to generate employment in other areas.

Inaugural literary competition

Paul Eldon Why, don’t most people have phones with 4G or at the least 3G? Sounds like a waste of money.

FUENGIROLA Council is launching its inaugural literary contest to promote creativity in the town, as well as to celebrate its historic heritage.

There will also be a series of activities taking place throughout the year which will involve artists and cultural interaction.

The competition intends to encourage reading and writing among Fuengiroleños, and to give them the opportunity of publishing their work.

The timescale for submitting contributions is between April 23 and August 31, 2018.

BA weighs up takeover AN airline planning to launch budget flights from the Costa del Sol to New York could be bought out by British Airways.

It comes as the UK-based carrier’s parent company IAG acquired a 4.6 per cent slice of Norwegian Air Shuttle, a rapidly-expanding long-haul carrier.

And the deal has sparked rumours of

a full takeover bid.

An IAG statement said: “The minority investment is intended to establish a position from which to initiate discussions with Norwegian, including the possibility of a full offer for Norwegian.”

IAG was formed in 2011 in the wake of a merger between British Airways and Spain’s flag carrier Iberia.

Town celebrates its makeover E S T EPONA Council has announced that it will be holding a programme of activities this Saturday to celebrate its ‘Garden of the Costa del Sol’ project.

The initiative has alre a d y s e e n o v e r a h u n d re d s t re e t s i n t h e o l d

town undergo renovation w o r k , t ra n s fo r m i n g i t s aesthetic.

Mayor Jose Maria Garcia Urbano said that the project had been a ‘milestone’ in the recent histor y of Estepona, and all the more impressive for

having been achieved in ‘record time.’

To celebrate its success a public festival has been organised, taking place in the Plaza Antonia Guerrero from 1pm on Saturday.

There will be free food tasting of traditional local dishes, as well as a bar that will be set up and run by the Association of Volunteers of Children’s Oncolog y in Malaga (AVOI).

AVOI hopes the bar will help to raise funds for act i v i t i e s a n d p a r t i e s fo r children who are hospitalised with an oncolog y related illness.

A range of musical performances will entertain t h e c ro w d s o n t h e d ay, and there will be walking and cycling tours through the old town.

M ay o r U r b a n o c o m mented that the tours are “an excellent opportunity to explore the 15 kilometres which have been remodelled in the area for the public.”

ARCHAEOLOGISTS working in northern Spain have discovered the oldest known tools used by Neanderthals on the mainland.

The preserved wooden remains were first uncovered back in 2015, and it’s only now that tests and research has shown that the tools date back some 90,000 years.

Among the tools discovered at the Aranbaltza site in the Basque Country were two ‘very well preserved’ instruments.

The research team behind the discovery used luminescence dating to determine that the tools were used all those thousands of years ago and, therefore, created

by Neanderthals.

One of the tools came from the trunk of a yew tree that the Neanderthals halved.

The researchers believe that one of the halves was whittled with a stone then treated with fire in order to harden the piece.

Such tools believed to have been used by Neanderthals have only been found at four other sites across Europe before: Italy, England and two locations in Germany.

Neanderthals were a close human ancestor that died out around 50,000 years ago.

Airport bottled water capped AS reported in the RTN (Issue 962), it was announced that following a number of complaints from passengers about the ‘extortionate’ price of bottled water from vending machines at the airports, the price would be capped at €1.60.

This decision has now been reviewed and, according to airport managers AENA, the price of a 300ml bottle of water will be no more than €1. This takes into account the international guidelines set out by the International Airports Council (ACI) which states that bottles should be a maximum of €1... or that, at least, “plenty of available sources of water no more expensive than this” should be on site both airside and in arrivals and departures.

The situation has been exacerbated in recent years with security measures stopping passengers bringing their own water bottles on the flights with them. This has resulted in the economics of supply and demand at the excessively high prices that have been charged.

AENA has announced that any new food and drink related premises and vending machines which open at the airports under their control, must not charge more than €1 for bottled water. They will also ensure that all the existing ones follow the new rules.

When the original €1.60 bottle price cap was announced in mid-March, AENA also pledged to install more free drinking fountains in airport terminals.

The cheaper price of water will also stop more people from taking empty plastic water bottles with them through security checks, only to fill them from taps in the airport toilets which isn’t always as drinkable as normal mains water in the home.

THE restaurant El Torreon has been chosen to teach a fish skewering course for the benefit of 10 unemployed people from Mijas.

It is an initiative that has been supported by both the council and the Association of Beach Businessmen.

Councillor for beaches, Jose Antonio Gonzalez said: “We are very happy with the design of the course that is especially aimed at unemployed people in the town.

“The skill being taught is very important in the cultural traditions of Mijas, and skewering goes beyond sardines to include all kinds of fish.”

Mr Gonzalez also paid tribute to the involvement of beach business managers, without whom he said the course could not exist.

This practical training scheme aims to get its participants (who are both

Councillor for Employment, Laura Moreno commented: “This project has been very well received as businesses told us that they need professionals trained in this way, given the importance of skewering in the cuisine of the area, or even as a tourist attraction.”

12 training sessions on Fridays and Saturdays over the next month, and the council is exploring similar schemes to boost employment prospects in Mijas.

Salvador Gallardo, owner of El Torreon restaurant said: “This course will provide guidance and advice from some of the best skewerers in the area, which will undoubtedly benefit the trainees.”

WHEEL UNITY: Cyclists set off on the route.

MORE than 1,500 people participated in t h e Jo r n a d a d e l Pe d a l i n C a r t a m a t h i s week, which was enjoying its 32nd year.

The event, which had been organised by the council’s Sports Department, saw cyclists of all ages enjoying the event.

There was a mix of residents and local businesses present, though everyone wore the sponsored red t-shirt as they went on

the traditional tour of the streets of Cartama and Estacion.

Mayor of Cartama, Jorge Gallardo, was involved in the event and said: “We want to thank everyone who participated in this event, as well as the collaboration of local businesses, police, the Guardia Civil, traffic officials, health care services and the Civil Protection Volunteer Group.”

THE La Cala Diabetes Support Group is pleased to be welcoming another interesting speaker to their next meeting at 10.30am on Friday April 27.

Dr Erja Oksman of Sol Eyes Clinic will be at Hogar in Fuengirola explaining how diabetes can affect vision and how it should be treated.

In addition, she will also be bringing a device that checks eye pressure.

‘You’re barred!’

SO, there I was taking a fag break outside the Brighton gay sex shop where I once had a part-time job when this creature roughly the size of Gibraltar was suddenly in my face, coughing and fanning her nose with a hand stolen from an orangutan.

“Ain’tcha heard of passive smoking?” she barked in a Bronx accent.

Expelling twin plumes of smoke through my nostrils, I replied: “Sure, and I’m totally against it. People should buy their own damn tobacco!”

Exuding aggression like a pit bull with piles, she retorted “Well, ain’tcha a wisenheimer; don’tcha know what those things will do to you?”

“Probably kill me, like your lard will do to you,” I shot back. “Now just waddle off and annoy someone else.” The Jolly Green Giant’s grumpy fat sister was still coughing and fanning her face as she faded into the mist.

The following day something similar happened when a jogger paused to criticise my addiction. This was a less aggressive encounter because I knew him quite well, and admired him for not only giving up cigarettes but for embarking on a fitness regime that knocked his weight down by about 20 kilos.

A fortnight later he was dead, aged 42.

His heart packed in when he ran up a flight of stairs in a hotel in Cape Town where he was holidaying.

I was reminded of these two encounters last weekend when my friend Nigel, drinking at Company Bar in Benidorm, stepped

outside to light a cigar. Moments later one client came out to complain about smoke polluting the bar.

Nigel was nonplussed. And angry. That prompted me to tell him how I came to be barred from a London pub last autumn.

Within seconds of me stepping outside to use my e-cigarette - I gave up tobacco about two years ago - a security guard burst out of the bar like a cockerel with its feathers on fire, and squawked “no smoking here, go stand 12ft away!”

I growled “I’m vaping, not smoking.

Don’t you know the difference, you moron?” and held my ground. That sent him into a frenzy, and he screamed “you’re barred. Leave now!”

As I had my jacket inside, I said I wasn’t leaving until I’d retrieved it. He tried to stop me from re-entering the bar, but as he was such a sorry excuse for a guard, being short and dumpy and utterly out of shape, I simply shoved him aside, went indoors, downed my overpriced Scotch in a single gulp, snatched up my gear and left. But

not before blowing a Hiroshima-sized cloud of vapour in his face.

This caused him to do the annoying coughing and face-fanning thing. Ridiculous, because all he got was a whiff of my flavoured vape juice. If I remember correctly, that night it was coffee and doughnuts. What’s not to like about that?

The range of flavours is enormous and growing daily as more and more people get their nicotine hits via e-cigs. Visit any vape store and you’ll find a huge choice, ranging from rhubarb and custard (ugh!), aniseed (double ugh!) to blueberry, caramel and lemon pie. I stick to menthol, as it helps clear my sinuses.

For the record The Royal Society for Public Health says that nicotine is non-car-

cinogenic and no more harmful than caffeine. E-cig vapour is significantly less dangerous than tobacco smoke which contains tar and other chemicals, including hydrogen cyanide, arsenic, and DDT, while the primary base ingredients of e-cig liquids are simply propylene glycol and glycerine.

Another plus: in Spain, every bar I’ve visited allows one to vape indoors. My one regret is that in Benidorm vape shops are few and far between. This, to my mind, is because cigarettes here are WAY too cheap an average of about €4.30 for a pack of 20.

In the UK the price is around €11.30, which would explain why vape outlets are increasing there almost as fast as the rate of homelessness and knife crime.

RUDDY NORA! A month has passed, bet you’re frothing at the mouth to read my continuation of skiffle.

Did you read my last story of forming a skiffle trio when I was 13 years of age (1962) with my tea chest bass? With washboard and an acoustic guitarist that played three open major chords with the occasional Am and Dm playing at church halls, community centres and we once played in a Victorian bandstand in Leamington Spa. I knew from that gig I had to get serious with music!

The Teddy boys (or Teds), a British subculture typified by young men, who copied the clothes of the dandies from the Edwardian period, were now sheets in the wind, The flick knives and knuckle dusters, like skiffle music, had become dinosaurs, things from the past.

Folk music started to get very popular in the UK and folk clubs began to pop up in many pubs in the mid-1960’s. Artists like Bob Dylan and Simon and Garfunkel came

on the scene. It was an explosion of a new type of acoustic music.

That was poetry in motion, the lyrics became an expression of what young people understood and the amateur folk musician at these clubs started to become very popular.

I started my own folk club at the Mercers Arms in Coventry at the age of 17 in 1966, folk music at that time became more popular than jazz.

and I used to pay him a quid for a 15minute slot.

He used to run a folk club in Solihull called the Boggery which attracted all the best folk artists and poets of the time. His good friend was a chap called Jake Thackray, a poet and songwriter, who often played his guitar on a TV programme called Braden Beat between 1962 and 1967.

I decided to learn the guitar and form a folk trio so bought a cheap guitar from a second-hand shop and practised every day

for many months, with the help of a book published by Bert Weedon called Play in a Day. I had one good friend at the time who was a brilliant finger picker on the guitar (Ray Barratt) and my great old pal (John Clarke) who played great chords and was a fantastic writer of lyrics. I was still not good enough to play guitar on stage so chose percussion, African congas, bongos, and the Jew’s harp. Still got my Jew’s harp, but now I have partial dentures! The Jew’s harp has been tossed into room 101.

We called ourselves the Galloping Maggots. We played every weekend at various folk clubs in the Midlands and at last started to get paid a fee. A small fee but it covered our travelling expenses and a few pints of brown and mild.

Because I didn’t understand music scores, I could only busk (play by ear) but at the end of the show Jasper Carrott used to give me his guitar and show me some chords, then left me to practise while he spent some time at the bar with his mates.

Things were about to change. Folk music was going down the tubes. Bob Dylan at Newport Folk Festival played an electric guitar and was booed for moving away from political songwriting and performing with an electric band.

I knew then that I had to move on as pop music was on the way.

RTN Life Oh what a night (or nights) in May AFTER 3,787 performances, the London production of Jersey Boys came to a triumphant close on March 25, 2017.

From the cast of this West End show was formed the vocal band Valli Seasons, taking this exciting musical on the road.

Kieran Ratcliffe was an original London cast member of Jersey Boys where he mostly played the role of Bob Gaudio and also covered the role of Frankie Valli. He also represented Jersey Boys as Bob Gaudio for the 10th anniversary of the Red Cross Ball (Zurich) for Bill Clinton. Most recently he has appeared as a vocalist for Adele and in the Disney movie Mary Poppins Returns movie.

Jake Samuels has appeared in Jersey Boys, Dirty Dancing, Wicked, Edward Scissorhands, Starlight Express and the RSC’s Beauty & the Beast.

And now for something totally different!!

www.thelittlegeranium.com BEING a chef I love to create new dishes, experimenting is an exciting part of what I do.

Recently I have been seeing snails in the shops for sale and have wanted to experiment with them rather than cook them traditionally. A snail is a gastropod (mollusc) from the land, sea or fresh water.

There are millions of varieties.

In France escargot (snails) are looked upon as a specialty food served with gar-

lic, parsley and lemon. In Andalucia the snail (caracol) is often eaten with a salsa Mediterraneana piquante, made from fresh tomatoes, a little chilli and garlic.

I figure that most of us love mussels, clams, oysters and scallops and so why wouldn’t we eat a snail? So I bought a few portions truthfully expecting them not to be very popular. In my head I was imagining them steamed in an oriental dressing, a bit spicy with lemongrass and ginger etc and a bit different.

I bought all the ingredients and went back to my kitchen to play around with the flavours. As I put my spoon in to taste the sauce it was just amazing! I sent a bowl to a Spanish friend who owns a nearby restaurant for his comments and he was delighted and simply said... wow!

So off we start with lunch service and I brief my team to sell them, saying that

they probably won’t sell but it’s great to have them on the menu. Ten minutes later we had sold out! The response was quite overwhelming.

People told me they were the best snails they had ever eaten and they asked for the recipe. I always try and write about the really popular dishes that I cook in my Little Geranium restaurant and never imagined snails would be amongst them!

The secret of this dish is the Chinese flavours, I make my own spicy oriental sauces like chilli, ponzu, teriyaki etc but you can buy them ready-made from most stores over here.

I love oriental flavours and when I used to travel I worked for a little while in Hong Kong and Bangkok. The memories of lime, lemongrass, ginger and chilli, brought together with either coconut milk or a teriyaki-style base are just fabulous.

We served them as a tapas dish for lunchtime only. I like to be experimental at lunchtimes with our artistic tapas and totally different from the rest. On the same day as the snails I had made a mini pizza (pizzetta) with truffles, wild mushrooms and foie gras and a creamy cassoulet of rabbit with home-made pasta, along with a slow-cooked pork burger with spiced apple relish.

It seems that the more inventive and creative I am with the daily specials thefaster they sell! These snails are excellent as a tapas sharing dish, dip in with a toothpick and then cut into something else more normal like a tempura of prawns or our famous crispy duck salad and you get a real mix of flavours with a modern twist.

Caracol (snails) Oriental If you are not keen on the idea of eating snails you could simply swap them for mussels or clams and cook in the exact same way.

Ingredients for two 300grm of fresh snails, soaked in cold water for 20 mins to remove any grit ½ onion 2 cloves garlic (1 chopped, the other crushed and minced) 3cm x 1cm (approx) of fresh root ginger chopped into small pieces ½ red mild Jalapeno style chilli deseeded and sliced ½ green mild Jalapeno chilli deseeded and sliced 1 stick of lemongrass chopped finely 1 tablespoon of ready-made teriyaki sauce ½ tablespoon of sweet chilli sauce ½ tablespoon of tomato frito (passata or puree) ½ tablespoon of oyster sauce Juice of 1 fresh lime 1 small teaspoon sesame oil A tablespoon of fresh coriander, roughly chopped

Method • In a frying pan sweat off the onion garlic, chilies, lemongrass and ginger on a medium heat

• Now add two handfuls of the pre-soaked snails (approx one large handful is a portion) • Add two tablespoons of water which helps steam the snails in the pan and allows the dried ingredients to create a bit of a sauce • Add all the oriental sauces like the teriyaki * the oyster and the chilli sauce and the tomato puree too • Allow to cook in the pan for about five minutes. It should look very ‘saucy’ and be bubbling away • Add the juice of the lime and the sesame oil and stir in • Taste and add seasoning if necessary • To finish add the chopped coriander leaves and serve immediately • Serve in a bowl with toothpicks and a spoon! *You can make your own teriyaki sauce easily by using a sweet soy sauce with a pinch of dried chilli flakes and some honey to taste. Cook together until it coats the back of your spoon and tastes great! The other sauces you should be able to find easily. Summary of tense forms Basic Spanish for everyday needs

TO start off today’s article here is the translation into English of last week’s little bit of Spanish.

Today has been a normal working day for me, with my classes in Torrevieja. I have a lot of students now, especially in the second group of the day. After the final class I have to gather all my things and drive towards my home in San Pedro.

Today I have called into the supermarket to buy oranges and bread, and also to the photocopy shop. I have found my two daughters at home, one watching the TV and the other one studying for an exam.

This isn’t the most usual situation.

Many times they are out doing sport or walking with their friends. Well, it’s quite late now and I am still working. In a minute I’m going to switch off this cursed computer and relax a little before going to sleep. What a life I lead!

Before we move onto a new topic, we are going to summarise the three verb forms we have been studying over a period of months. If you remember, right back at the beginning we looked at a way of referring to our future intentions by using ‘voy a’ (I’m going to), which changes to ‘vas a’ (you’re going to), ‘va a’ (he or she is going to), ‘vamos a’ (we’re going to) ‘vais a’ (you’re going to - plural form) and ‘van a’ (they’re going to). We saw that after these we put the main verb of the sentence into the infinitive form - giving us, for example ‘Voy a comer’ (I’m going to eat) or ‘Vas a aprender’ (you are going to learn).

We can therefore put these ideas together to form a ‘timeline’ as follows.

Voy a comer.

Estoy comiendo.

He comido.

(I’m going to eat) (I’m eating) (I have eaten) Vas a aprender.

Estás aprendiendo.

Has aprendido.

I think it is an effective way of revising what we have learnt, reminding ourselves which form is which and how it is made up, and also the time sequencing of past, present and future.

British research has revealed that acne sufferers’ cells have built-in protection against ageing that is likely to keep them looking younger later in life.

A team from King’s College London, studied tiny structures called telomeres, caps on the ends of chromosones that protect the DNA from damage.

Thought of as tiny biological clocks, telomeres get shorter during the ageing process and eventually become so short that cells die.

Ride a roller coaster to pass kidney stones RIDING a roller coaster could be the most pain-free and cost-efficient way to pass kidney stones.

That’s according to a team at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, who rode Disney World’s top rides 60 times to test their theory.

They rode three roller coasters 60 times in a row with a model kidney and three different sized kidney stones to see if it helped to stimulate passing kidney stones. By the end, they concluded it did.

Independent of kidney stone volume and location, findings by the researchers showed sitting in the back of the roller coaster resulted in a passage rate of 63.89 per cent, compared to a passage rate of 16.67 when sat in the front seat of rides.

The urologist behind the study said that the study supports the anecdotal evidence that a ride on

a moderate-intensity roller coaster could benefit some patients with small kidney stones.

Passing a kidney stone before it reaches an obstructive size can prevent surgeries and emergency room visits.

Babies are hard work A NEW report has revealed that 35 per cent of UK parents were not prepared in the slightest for how hard having a baby would be. Almost half, 49 per cent, said they felt shocked as they adjusted to their new lifestyle.

The research was commissioned by toy company ‘Little Tikes,’ and quizzed 1,500 UK parents in their first year of parenting.

The poll found the hardest part of being a parent is the constant tidying up (25 per cent), closely followed by bedtime issues, including the sleepless nights (22 per cent), and the battle to get the baby to sleep (14 per cent).

Over a third admitted they only enjoyed being a parent ‘some of the time.’

However, on the flip side, the survey found the smallest things the most rewarding, with 38 per cent of respondents saying that seeing their little one smile was the most fulfilling feeling, giving it a happiness rating of 8.5 out of 10.

Parents also said they spent around 2,263 hours holding their baby in the first year, which equates to over six hours a day.

Almost three quarters (73 per cent) said that during the first year with a new baby they feel pressure from friends and family to be a ‘perfect’ parent, and 66 per cent of parents said they regularly get annoyed with others on social media who portray a perfect family.

Generation Amazing attracts Spanish talent

by Anthony Harwood AS well as preparing to take over as manager of the Doha-based team Al Sadd, Spanish football legend Xavi Hernandez has also got to work as Qatar’s new global ambassador for the World Cup. Last week the tiny Gulf state announced it was expanding its promotion of football at grassroots level into four new countries as part of the legacy of the 2022 tournament.

The Generation Amazing scheme, which aims to benefit a million people by 2022, is being championed by Xavi, 38, who said: “The Generation Amazing motto would be similar to Johan Cruyff’s motto: ‘If you have the chance to help someone, you should’.

“I have seen first-hand what football can achieve in communities in Qatar and across the region. Football has the power to unite people, dispel stereotypes and break down social barriers.”

Kuwait, Oman, India and the Philippines have been picked in the second wave of countries to be part of Generation Amazing.”

As well as 33,000 people around the world, Generation Amazing has also reached 35 schools in Qatar, working with 132 sports coaches, 50 youth group football coaches, 15 Qatari football players and workers from seven construction sites across Qatar.

Last week it was reported in Marca that Xavi will retire this summer and take over as coach of Al Sadd, which he joined as a player in 2015.

At the end of this season he will travel to Russia for the opening game of the World Cup, and see Spain’s fixture against Portugal, as a guest of FIFA boss Gianni Infantino.

There is speculation that he could take over the Qatar team for the 2022 World Cup.

The team of eight and nine-year-olds won group II of the Educational League of Malaga to great acclaim from family, friends and all involved in their training.

New chapter for Dickens with SPV Racing

SWEDISH former racing driver Stanley Dickens, who won the Le Mans 24-hours in 1989, has joined SPV Racing as their team manager.

At the moment SPV Racing are entered in the Michelin Le Mans Cup with a single Ligier JS P3 LMP3 car, but will soon be rolling out a second Ligier.

An LMP2 test programme is due to start in the second half of this year, with a chance of some races before the end of the year.

Alongside this, SPV are involved in GT4 racing in Spain and are preparing to join the new FIA Electric GT Series with a pair of Tesla Model S P100DLs. Stanley Dickens enjoyed a successful racing career which saw him win a European Championship, a Japanese Championship and ultimately the 1989 Le Mans 24-Hours with Sauber Mercedes.

Moving into team management upon retiring from the track, Dickens guided his Sports Racing Team Sweden to the FIA Sportscar Championship SR2 title in 2001 with Larry Oberto and Thed Bjork.
