Marbella councillor accuses Benahavis of poaching land

Councillor Diaz in white studying plans for the new development

by Michael Cano MIGUEL DIAZ an Izquierda Unida councillor in Marbella has complained to the new city council that the town of Benahavis has ‘poached’ 40,000 square metres of land.

According to the councillor, the Benahavis council is taking land from Marbella and allowing developers to build more than 2,000 homes with a golf course, hotel and equestrian centre which will be unlicensed and illegal.

He proposes that this is a return to the old days when buildings were constructed improperly and insists that the Marbella council does something about it, threatening to initiate legal action himself if the council ignores his demands.

This representative of the left wing minority party in the Marbella council has gone

back in time to the 1990s and suggested that family members of the reinstated mayor Ángeles Muñoz, were party to this type of construction which he has described as "uncontrolled urbanism."

In support of his argument, he has also pointed out that the building of these properties above Nueva Andalucia will, when completed, unreasonably add an additional burden to the infrastructure of the area which already has difficulty in coping with large volumes of traffic and inhabitants.

For more than three centuries, Benahavis and Marbella were in dispute over the town’s status but it was eventually agreed that Benahavis should be ‘independent’ from Marbella and is now one of the wealthiest areas in Andalucia, thanks in no small part to areas such as the luxurious La Zagaleta development.

Security blanket FUENGIROLA COUNCIL is set to deploy a specialised security plan during upcoming celebrations including the town’s feria. Separate units comprising local and national police, fire fighters, medics and Guardia Civil will patrol day and night while barriers to prevent vehicles entering spaces where revellers will gather are to be installed.

A MALAGAN man has been rescued from a collapsed building in Mexico City after a massive 7.1 magnitude earthquake rocked the country.

Jorge Gortez, 33, was pulled from the rubble by a team working with the aid of dogs and infra-red devices and while he is alive he is yet to contact his family.

Odd request

A PRISONER from Velez Malaga has requested to stay in jail to finish a training course.

The 36-year-old Bolivian man, who is in prison in Alhaurin de la Torre, will now stay in jail until November, fulfilling the maximum term of his pre-trial sentence. He claimed he wanted to finish a course which he believes will help “pay back on the street.”

Surprised judges granted the man’s request, saying it was the first time in their long legal careers they had been asked to keep someone behind bars.

by Richard Johnson MARBELLA COUNCIL is giving the Guardia Civil traffic division a new building in Trapiche Norte.

The town’s Mayor, Angeles Muñoz, visited the facilities along with the Director General of Traffic, Gregorio Serrano, and the Councillor for Finance and Heritage, Manuel Osorio.

The mayor explained building "has an ideal location, with easy access to the motorway, to house the facilities," while adding, "we are already working to immediately establish a collaboration agreement," to finance the works.

The building, which will be located on Avenida Florida and Calle Padre

Paco Ostos, next to the bus station, will be financed by the Directorate General de Trafico (DGT) and will cover around 550 square metres.

Mayor Muñoz explained, "this new location will not only improve facilities but the service will be much better for Marbella.” The mayor, who was also accompanied in his visit by the provincial director of the DGT, Trinidad Hernandez; the head of the Traffic group in Malaga, Captain Jose Antonio Montes, and the head of the Guardia Civil Traffic department Marbella, Lieutenant Jose Antonio Cordon.

The mayor stressed that although the agents "are very happy in the Divina Pastora area, I believe that the new location will allow them to continue

growing and advancing in the service they provide."

The director general of the DGT agreed the new building would allow "better and more accessible facilities, which will not only result in road safety on the roads of Malaga, but also in the security of this area of Marbella.”

Serrano thanked the council and mayor for the property "which shows the council’s sensitivity to the needs of residents,” adding, "it will be a pleasure to invest taxpayer money in creating a traffic department.”

The division’s current facilities, located on Calle San Antonio, cover around 350 square metres. The department has around 65 agents, 22 motorcycles and 14 cars in Marbella.

Meals on wheels

MIJAS COUNCIL has launched a food delivery service for those on low incomes.

The initiative, aimed at those aged over 65, will begin on Monday September 25. The Councillor for Social Services, Mari Carmen Carmona, announced her department is once again launching the project for the second consecutive year, benefitting 20 users for six months.

She explained, “our main objective is to cover the basic needs of all grandparents who live in difficult situations,” adding, “many seniors are ashamed to ask for these grants.” She emphasised, “this is an initiative where the anonymity of the applicants remains.”

From September 25, interested parties will be able to register their application in the department of Social Services The initiative consists of bringing lunch to the homes of twenty users over 65 with limited financial resources.

Councillor Carmona explained, “we are talking about a catering service bringing a lunch prepared Monday to Saturday to each of these households. A Sunday meal will be delivered the day before to each of the beneficiaries.”

The meals consist of cold food that complies with sanitary regulations which is then heated up by its recipient.

Hate crime plan

by Richard Johnson MIJAS COUNCIL has organised an event to teach local police about dealing with hate crimes.

The course was designed to “improve the knowledge and treatment of people who suffer from these types of crimes and teach the state security forces how to deal with them,” according to the council.

The mayor for Equality, Mari Carmen Carmona explained the initiative, which is particularly aimed at crimes against the LGTBIQ community, was created in collaboration with the Andalucian Rainbow Federation, whose president, Gonzalo Serrano, was

in charge of teaching the classes.

Councillor Carmona explained, “it is essential to train police or state security forces, as they see hate crimes and discrimination, which is what we will focus on.

The Department of Equality is placing special emphasis on the LGTBIQ community because it is most affected by these cases.”

The course taught officers to identify hate crime, learn about which laws regulate these crimes, famous cases, and how to deal with the situation. Gonzalo Serrano explained, “society has changed over the years, and it is much more respectful but it is true that there are still some people who are not. We

Injured policeman receives compensation A 16-YEAR-OLD girl has been ordered to pay €364 in compensation to a police officer after biting one of his fingers.

The young woman will have to pay out the sum after assaulting an agent who tried to detain her after she es-

caped from a young offenders’ institute in Malaga.

The girl, who is from Cadiz, had absconded from the centre on Avenida Miraflores de Los Angeles and travelled home. Her father called the local po-

lice to report his daughter. When two officers turned up the girl became aggressive, breaking a window and hitting the men.

One agent was bitten on the first finger of his right hand, causing a wound

which took seven days to heal.

A juvenile court sentenced the girl to six months hospitalisation in a semiopen centre and a year of probation in addition to the compensation, finding her guilty of assault and causing injury.

Taxi drivers make negotiation progress FOLLOWING a city-wide taxi strike last month, Malaga Council has agreed a compromise with cabbies over multi-passenger taxis.

The council has agreed not to give licences to taxis with more than seven seats after it was claimed an increasing number of cabs were taking larger groups. A study will now be commissioned into the impact of larger vehicles on Malaga’s 1,432 licenced taxi drivers and their users.

Currently 83 cars have a licence to offer taxi services to between seven and nine people, a figure which will now remain the same during a two-year moratorium on offering further licences for larger vehicles.

The move comes following negotiations between Malaga council and taxi drivers after cabbies went on a five-day strike in August over the use of private hire firm Cabify,

prompting travel chaos.

The five-day industrial action over private hire vehicles came to an end after the Junta de Andalucia agreed a series of temporary proposals to control numbers. Unions are now waiting for further meetings with the Junta this month to push through permanent measures. Union leaders explained they want the ratio of private hire cabs to taxis to reach 1:30, a figure the Junta described as “impossible.” The strike proved a source of tension throughout Malaga, leading to ten arrests. Five of those detained were held over their alleged role in attacking Eduardo Martin, president of the VTC (private hire licence) association, who claimed on Monday he was attacked by taxi drivers at Malaga Airport where he was giving a television interview about the strike. According to media reports, one of the five is considered to be the main insitigator of the attack, while the other four are suspected to have joined in. Hundreds of passengers were left stranded at Malaga Airport during

MARBELLA’S fire department has won an award from the Debra-Butterfly Skin Association.

The recognition was given for the department’s “continuous involvement and solidarity with people suffering from this disease,” according to Marbella Council.

The award distinguishes people and entities which collaborate with the charity, making it stronger and more visible. A spokesman for the organisation explained, "we are immensely grateful for the warmth

and support provided by the Fire Department.”

The award ceremony took place on Sunday, September 17, during the Solidarity Gala 'Butterfly Children'. The event was attended by the fire chief, Medardo Tudela, accompanied by other members of the body.

In June, the charity celebrated the first anniversary of its charity bench situated at the peak of La Concha.

The bench was the brainchild of local Marbella fireman Jose Pérez Bellido who wanted to raise aware-

ness for the condition as well as offering a place for visitors of the mountain to rest and take in the views. With the help of his fellow firemen, la Obra Social “la Caixa” and the Town Hall, in 2016, Jose saw his dream become a reality.

Since then hundreds of visitors have made use of the bench and shared their selfies with the hashtags #BancSolidario and @ pieldemariposa to create awareness of the cause.

Terror suspect arrested SPAIN'S Interior Ministry says police have arrested a Pakistani man suspected of promoting terrorism and spreading Islamic jihadi propaganda on social media networks.

A ministry statement reports that the 25-year-old resident of the northern Catalan city of Lleida was part of a cell partially dismantled with the arrest of three Pakistani brothers in Lleida last year. The ministry said the man detained on Tuesday had become more engrossed in radical activities in recent weeks.

16 people were killed in attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils last month. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Spain says its police have been involved in the arrests of 200 suspected jihadi activists since the country raised its security alert to one step below the maximum in June 2015.

€200,000 children’s park

by Jemima Roberts FUENGIROLA’S Mayor has visited works to improve the town’s parks.

Ana Mula, accompanied by the councillors for Green Zones and Infrastructures, Maria Jesus Pascual and Jose Sanchez, visited three of the parks currently receiving a facelift: Pulgarcito, La Cantera and Juan Pablo II. Last year ten children’s areas were renovated and this year another ten spaces are being used. In all of them are being installed games adapted for children with disabilities, as well as games for babies where space limitations allow In a town measuring 10 square kilometres, Fuengirola has 42 parks, a number which continues to grow each year. The council has now invested €200,000 into improving children’s facilities in several parks.

In each of the areas, flooring has been replaced to be used as part of the play area, with different colours and textures used. In addition, each park has been given adapted swings and supports for children with disabilities. Baby swings have also been installed.

Ana Mula commented, “we have invested more than €200,000 in renovating the chil-

dren’s areas of some of our parks, and we have started construction on new ones and soon we begin remodelling the larger green spaces around the town.” She added, “what we are trying to do is to adapt our town to new needs. If a park was built many years ago and is dilapidated and needs works the problem is we do not have a facility to carry out works to individual parks because of the nature of our contracts. Therefore we have to carry out all projects in one go.”

M Mula explained important public investment had been made in Fuengirola in recent years, making the town one of the most active municipalities of the province.

She added, “we will continue to be very active because our economy and budgetary results allow us.”

She explained, “between 2016 and 2017 we launched large-scale works because last year we ended the budgetary year with a large surplus and we will this year too, which will allow us this year and the next draw to consider big projects of up to €14.5 million euros.” She added, “some works have already been finished, others are in the final phase and many others are about to begin.”

Among the works begun this week were projects to remodel Calle Santa Rosa between Santa Lucia and Avenida La Acapulco.

A grisly discovery TWO DEAD bodies have been found in Malaga City in the last week.

The first, the corpse of a 74-year-old woman was found in a house in Malaga city. The woman’s body was found several days after her death after neighbours warned Local Police she had not been seen for several days and of a strong smell coming from her home.

The deceased, who is sasid to have lived alone, was found to have died of natural causes following an autopsy.

In the same week, a 49-year-old homeless man has been found dead in the grounds of Malaga Cathedral. The National Police are now investigating after the man was found in the church’s gardens.

The man’s body is said not to show any signs of violence after Local and National Police officers found the corpse on Friday.

Haza del Mojon in Benhavis was the site of the first blaze which required 25 firemen, two fire engines, two environmental agents and a helicopter to control.

The surrounding forests of Marbella´s Camino de los Pescadores also broke out in flames, affecting Monte Bajo and requiring a total of 12 firefighters, three fire engines and air support.

A third fire later sparked up in Puerto de la Torre, close to Malaga City Centre, which was brought under control by two helicopters, 23 firemen, two environmental agents and a fire reinforcement brigade (Brica).

Politicians come in ahead of schedule

Spanish health authority advises young people how to snort cocaine

by Jemima Roberts MIJAS COUNCIL has announced it has fulfilled 50 per cent of its overall targets in its first year in office.

The governing team, made up of Cuidadanos and PSOE, has now been in power for just over 365 days and has celebrated its two main achievements; lowering taxes and approving a citizen participation regulation.

The two parties agreed a manifesto more than a year ago promising 50 actions to be completed during their coalition, with more than half of them now executed and another 28 per cent begun, The town’s Mayor, Juan Carlos Maldonado, explained, “It is not easy for two political parties to join forces, but in Mijas we have set an example that politics must be at the service of citizens,” says Maldonado, who has wanted to extend that good understanding to the rest of formations. “Anyone who wants to work for this municipality has a hand in these new political times,” he adds.

Of the commitments already fulfilled are a comprehensive parking plan for the whole municipality, improvements of facilities and accessibility, the extension of public transport networks, asphalting, cleaning and installing signalling on roads, the creation of new playgrounds and dog parks and signing off on proposals to build more housing.

The council is proudest of its commitment to lower taxes for all residents in 2018, however.

As of next year, property tax (IBI) will be reduced from 0.508 per cent of a property’s value to 0.44826 per cent, while capital gains tax (Plusvalia), tax on some vehicles, inheritance tax and administrative fees will be lowered.

Capital gains tax will be lowered to 22 per cent, while inheritance tax will soon only apply to houses worth more than €100,000; double the previous amount of €50,000. Fees for auctions, contracts, administrative forms and competitions will also be waived if they are under €6.

Alex Green with his fiancee A YOUNG British dad is fighting for his life after being found with horrific injuries while on his stag do in Magaluf.

26-year-old firefighter Alex Green, from Goldborne in Merseyside, travelled to Majorca with a group of 25 family members and friends last Friday.

Just hours later, he was discovered in the resort with severe injuries. The rest of his group became concerned when Alex failed to return from the toilets of the bar that they were in.

They began frantically searching for him, before receiving a phone call from someone who had found him unconscious in the street. It is unclear how Alex suffered his injuries.

The British Embassy is in contact with his family. The dad-of-one was rushed to hos-

pital where he was found to have suffered a bleed on the brain, fractures to his eye sockets, cheeks and nose and a collapsed lung.

Alex was placed in an induced coma and has undergone surgery.

He remains in intensive care in Majorca, with his family and his fiancée who flew out to the island to be with him.

Alex needs around €60,000 to fly him home in a specialist air ambulance and medical care in the Spanish hospital can cost up to €6,000 each day.

Early indications are that his travel insurance will not pay out because he had alcohol in his system, making any claim potentially void.

Now Alex’s friends have set up a JustGiving page to cover the cost of his care - more than €30,000 has been donated so far.

Non-polluting vehicles, including electric and solar cars, will receive a 75 per cent tax reduction from next year, while vehicles which minimise pollution, including hybrid vehicles, will see a 50 per cent reduction.

The proposal was unanimously approved by all parties after the council received around 70 suggestions from the public. A SPANISH health authority has sparked outrage amongst anti-drug campaigners after handing out advice leaflets to young people on the proper way to snort cocaine.

The campaign, which includes messages such as 'chop up your line nice and fine,' and 'If it is not well chopped, you can damage your nostrils,' has been condemned as irresponsible and making light of a serious subject.

The controversial project was launched in Bilbao and involved local health workers handing out plastic advice cards in the shape of credit cards with slogans on them.

However, anti-drug campaigners have slammed the campaign calling it flippant and frivolous.

Health officials said the project was justified in order to 'minimise the risks of drug use' and that the card was only given out to 'selected' people, not the general public.

Recipients would already have sought help and gone through screening and interviews.

Ten million travel on highspeed trains THE Avant trains have carried over 10 million passengers since they were first commissioned in December 2004.

These high-speed trains are specifically designed for short journeys, unlike the Ave which covers longer distances.

In Andalusia, the trains carry commuters travelling between Seville, Cordoba, Puente Genil, Antequera Santa Ana and Malaga. Renfe offers sixteen Avant trains in the Seville-Cordoba-Malaga corridor on a typical working day, eight in each direction, with four trains that exclusively link Cordoba to the capital Sevilla.

The travel time between Seville and Malaga on one of these trains is just one hour and 55 minutes, and over 902,000 travellers used the service in 2016 alone.

Andalusia was the second region to have the Avant trains put into service, following Madrid. Currently, Renfe offers Avant services in nine different routes spread over high-speed lines throughout the country.

2017 Feria Rosario poster finally chosen

by Jemima Roberts FUENGIROLA has finally selected a poster for its 2017 Feria Rosario.

The grand unveiling took place in the Critobal Blanca del Moral auditorium in the Parque de Espana, at an event which also featured a musical performance.

feria, billed as “the Costa del Sol’s largest horse show,” caused some controversy after an initial public contest to choose the winning design was hacked, according to the council.

Members of dance schools and local clubs were forced to choose a design from three put forward by officials after the electoral fraud was discovered. The town’s council last month launched a criminal investigation after it was found around 741 “irregular” votes were cast, with one NIE number being used to make 338 votes.

The election was cancelled after computer technicians detected “a series of irregularities that can only be classified as very serious and a fraudulent use of the system,” suggesting their system had been hacked.

In June, a public contest was put together to choose a poster for the feria, with a prize of €3,750 up for grabs.

Thirty works were submitted, but the jury, made up of municipal workers, decided not to award a prize, believing none of the works met the competition’s requirements. A public outcry followed, forcing the council to put the contest to a vote on their website in which only registered voters in Fuengriola could cast a ballot using their NIE number.

Only one vote per person was allowed but the competition’s second phase IT workers found an impossibly high number of votes had been cast..”

Mayor Mula explained, "people who are not registered have been able to vote for a poster, something which should have been impossible. It is unfortunate that people who have voted honestly, meeting the requirements, have been disadvantaged by those people who have chosen to violate the system, I suppose to try to get the prize.”

The council has now submitted evidence, including identity numbers and IP addresses to a court to ascertain whether a crime has been committed.

The feria Rosario will take place from October 6 to 12, with the proclamation- a live performance marking the beginning of a feria- being held in the Palacio de la Paz, performed by local dance groups.

Ana Mula, the town’s Mayor, explained, "in January we met with the groups to suggest they get involved and they were very excited.

They have been working for months to create a proclamation which I’m sure will surprise us all. It will be unique, meangingful and exciting, and above all I’m sure very artistic.”

The free event begins at 9.30pm on Friday October 6 before the event continues for six days, attracting horse riders and flamenco dancers to the streets of Fuengirola.

Water works

AN investment of €2.6m will see a new pool complex added to Sport City in Malaga Province.

Cartama Council has awarded the works, which will begin in about a month, to the company, Easy 2000.

The project is funded entirely by the Council and Mayor, Jorge Gallardo, told Spanish media about the procedure, he said: “A great step has been taken with this project.

There was a great demand for it from residents and finally the project of Sport City will be finished.

It is the largest investment in the council´s history without the help of another administration, only with its own resources."

Approximately €10m has been invested by the council in the project.

The water complex will be built on a plot of roughly 4,000 square metres and the project will include a two-storey building which will have two large pools as well as a gym area, three activity rooms, changing rooms, cafeteria, sports shop and a number of other facilities.

by Jemima Roberts IT LOOKS as though Malaga’s firefighters may soon be back to work after the city council agreed to new work conditions.

The council has said it is prepared to negotiate with the fire men to redraft a document regulating fire workers’ conditions, dating from 1959. The document will see issues including training, shifts and fire stations renegotiated.

A strike had been ongoing in the province for nine months, leading to a potential criminal case for 60 firefighters who ignored calls to attend five blazes in one day.

The Malaga prosecutor’s office has referred the matter to a judge who will now decide whether the workers are guilty of abandoning

their office, a matter punishable by up to two years’ suspension from work and fines.

According to reports, on June 27 five fires broke out simultaneously around the province. Sixty-one firemen were all called and asked to come to work but only one turned up. Twelve said they could not because of child care or doctor’s appointments, three said they were out of the area, one refused to go, two were on leave and the other 42 did not pick up their phones or return the call.

In the end, Provincial firefighters and Infoca workers were left to tackle the blazes in La Corta, Campanillas, Asperones, Monte Dorado and Atabal.

by Sally Underwood BENALMADENA COUNCIL is holding a meeting to promote its new shopping intitiative, Open Commercial Centre Benalmadena.

The project, which began a decade ago, will allow small businesses to receive up to €70,000 each in grants.

Councillor Javier Carnero, Victor Navas, the mayor of Benalmadena, Víctor Navas, and the president of ACEB, Rosa Maria Gonzalez, reported on the funding, which is hoped will improve the competitiveness of small businesses.

The €2.3 million overall budget will help businesses fund vital investments, including signage, lighting, decking, air conditioning and CCTV systems.

Councillor Carnero explained the move would bring a host of advantages, "such as increased sales and pedestrian traffic in the municipality, improvement of the city centre, and creating a pleasant, safe and accessible environment for consumers and visitors to the municipality.”

Javier Carnero also explained another fund for small businesses had been approved this month from which owners can request aid

of up to €21,000 for projects involving digital modernisation and business expansion. The project has a budget of €3.9 million and is available until the end of 2018.

The mayor of Benalmadena praised the Councillor for Commerce, Bernardo Jimenez, for his work, which he said, "has been essential and decisive.” He also explained the importance of this initiative, "thanks to which we can revitalise and modernise all the commercial spaces in the historical centres of the municipality so they can compete with large areas."

He added the town hall would always support small businesses, explaining, "we cannot forget that it is one of the main elements that energises our economy, as well as creating jobs.” He added, thanks to the funding, “we will be able to access subsidies lines for new technologies, energy efficiency, customer loyalty resources, management expenses, security, etc."

There are currently 40 other areas eligible for the funding in Andalucia, of which eight are in Malaga province. Others are located in Alora, Ronda, Nerja, Malaga city, Antequera, Marbella and Cruz del Humilladero.

Occupation by deception

Britons have long cherished the belief that they are a free people. Unlike their neighbours the British never experienced occupation. It is well then to remind ourselves of what happens after a country has been invaded and its truculent population repressed.

Government is subordinate not to the people but to unseen influences. The political elite touch their toes to accommodate the occupiers.

Pillage and plunder of the public purse by the replacement population proceeds.

Occupied peoples quickly discover that their status is relegated to that of second class citizen.

Whilst equality is the oft-repeated mantra some are considered more equal than are others, the newcomers for example.

Life´s routine appears normal but there is a sinister influence that one finds suffocating. It is not exactly forbidden to say this or that or the other, but it is not done. Anyone who challenges the prevailing orthodoxy finds himself silenced with surprising effectiveness. One keeps strictly to the lines drawn in the sand.

It is now a punishable offence to express dissent or criticise the conquerors. The judiciary, police and security services become accomplices to the settlers. Press, Civil Service and police are subservient to the intruders. Courts are sympathetic towards those who now rule the roost.

Journalists become accomplices to treachery;

media is institutionally hostile to the host community, which finds their opinions are effectively silenced. Members of the occupied community are denied access to selected alienoccupied zones.

Civil servants and police are aware that their job security is dependent upon servile acquiescence to the whims of the newly arrived.

Employment, education and housing preference is given to the incomers. This is known as affirmative action or reverse racism.

Media and palace publishers rebuff poetry, art and literature considered to be of a dissenting nature. Job security is dependent upon compliance.

Major crimes committed by the newly arrived are treated as minor misdemeanours.

Minor misdemeanours committed by the host community are regarded as major crimes. A sentence is automatically doubled if the court considers there was an element of hostility towards an occupier. The interests of the incomers are sacrosanct and inviolable.

The host population finds their history demonised and culture mocked. The prevailing propaganda urges collaboration and defeat is said to be inevitable.

Media focuses on the failings of the host community whilst drooling over the history and culture of the invaders. Censorship and suppression is endemic. Members of the host community are under surveillance, considered suspects and considered potential criminals.

This is what it is like to live in an occupied country. Rule, Britannia, rule the waves, Britons never will be slaves. Perhaps Britannia no longer rules the waves washing along the English Channel.

A few days ago, ministers from the Gibraltarian government arrived in London, the reason to discuss several questions that need urgent replies? This included the most important one of all, Gibraltar after Brexit?

A week before their arrival Gibraltar celebrated something called National Gibraltar Day, the locals were joined as always by tourists, those who had crossed over from Spain, and those who had arrived by cruise ship for a day’s shopping.

The streets were bedecked with flags and bunting, kids with balloons smiling as they would do when enjoying the day, one balloon broke away from its young owner and floated gently in the light breeze over Trafalgar, not certain where it would end up. A bit like the question of Gibraltar as Brexit creeps on.

So, nothing is different there really, you could say every day is Gibraltar Day when the sun shines, except things could become rather awkward for Gibraltar and the Gibraltarians residents.

50 years ago, in 1967, the Rock voted by more than 90% to remain British it come as no surprise to all of us, however at the referendum in which Britain voted to leave the E.U. Gibraltar voted unequivocally to stay in the E.U. This is the conundrum that now faces Britain, Gibraltar and the European Union, so far to my knowledge the Gibraltar question has not come into play during the Brexit talks between David Davis Britain’s negotiator and Michel Barnier for the E.U, but when it does arrive it could hang over the talks like a storm cloud, or even upgrade to a hurricane?

What will happen? Will Britain write off Gibraltar as a lost cause, no they cannot afford to as Gibraltar has been Britain’s lynch pin in the Mediterranean for Centuries.

Will Gibraltar be forced into holding another referendum, almost certainly not likely after their last vote was so clear in staying. This is a dilemma for the government as it is almost an impossible task to resolve.

I spent around an hour trying to get some comments on the GIb/UK position, however I failed miserably, my call telephone call to Gibraltar Governments Press office failed to get a response, “If you look up our website, you may find something there that may help you” a spokesman said. In London the Gibraltar office suggested I called Gibraltar, maybe these are highly paid people to answer questions put to them by people like me, are they getting money for nothing? I think so.

During the National Day celebrations, the chief minister Mr Picardo, seems to reverse the early decision when he said that Brexit would pose an “existential threat” to Gibraltar owing to the border with Spain and asked Whitehall somehow to allow Gibraltar to stay in the E.U. “We will leave with the UK, Britain sticks with us and we stick with Britain, Gibraltar will prosper greatly”.

But what would Gibraltarians say after the referendum vote to remain in the E.U? A local business man told me, “The referendum was a joke, why go to all that trouble, and expense, I

am slightly relieved that Spain or the E.U. will not penalise us if we leave with Britain, that’s if they stand by their word”.

A young lady selling perfumes told me “I voted to remain, but on looking at what is happening in Europe, and the huge rise of immigration in Spain, and the way Britain looks as if it is going, then I would be happy to leave as well.”

A shop owner commented “we rely on the Brits that come shopping from the mainland and then cruise ships, they like to spend money, so whatever happens with remain or exit, as long as we can have shoppers”.

Mr Menez started his business 21 years ago as a small glass blowing work shop, he received funds from the E.U for his centre of town factory, he said that the biggest issue we are facing is a free flowing border for people visiting Gibraltar, and the goods we import, such as raw materials we buy is exclusively bought from the E.U. It has to travel through the European Union, to get to us, but if it faces a difficult Spanish

border then I will have a problem in the same way it affects us being able to export our goods to the world, so the uncertainly is very bad for me and others in the same position”.

Will it mean that many of the 96 per cent of the 32,000 residents on the Rock that voted to remain are changing their minds, it’s a possibility, as the signs of growth in Britain are looking more optimistic MPs were supposedly told by Mr Picardo at a private lunch that he had spoken to Gibraltar’s business bosses and told them “maybe we got it wrong, he was “hugely optimistic that we will be able to negotiate our way through this difficult moment, in a way that does not affect our prosperity”.

But after consulting the Rock’s nonplussed business bosses - who do 90 per cent of their trade with the UK mainland - MPs claim Fabian Picardo told them at a private lunch “maybe we got it wrong”.

So what will happen next for Gibraltar, now most of the threats are slowly evaporating, another referendum, no I don’t think so. I don’t think Picardo would gamble his position away, but if Gibraltar did leave without a final consultation with its 32,000 inhabitants what would the remainders say,.One remainder told me “ politics is like a bloody game of cards you place your bet on what you hope will be a king, and a joker turns up, they supposed to represent us, but as soon as the going gets tough the weak get going MPs are useless”.

We will have to wait and watch as the Brexit negotiations continue to creep on at a snail’s pace, there has been a lot of hand shaking and smiles between David Davis and Michel Barnier, however behind all that bon homme I still think that Barnier and the E.U. will try and pull a few fast ones on us.

As for the little girl watching her balloon slowly drifting aimlessly up into the air above Trafalgar not knowing where it is going, or where it will land, can the same be said for Gibraltar? Only time will tell.

Steven Saunders one of the most welcoming chefs in Spain Welcoming Guests

Michele soon became involved in the Silverstone business acting as chief taster of all new dishes and a support for Steven but when the agreement with the race track came to an end before its time, they both decided that the time was right for a move to Spain so that Steven could see what life in semiretirement would be like!

Settling in La Cala de Mijas, they both found that they needed a new challenge and without too much delay, they decided to open what can best be described as a ’boutique restaurant’, The Little Geranium in La Cala which instantly became a hit, followed 18 months later by The Little Geranium on the Golden Mile, Marbella.

In between, the happy couple were married with many of their new friends and customers in attendance but one thing is certain, whichever restaurant you see Steven creating his very special dishes in, you will never see him in a chef’s hat but always wearing a trilby.

He’s not bald, in fact he has a fine head of hair but at an early age when he was travelling between restaurants he used to knock his chef’s hat off whenever he got into a car and he replaced it with a trilby which is now his trademark.

Both of the Costa del Sol restaurants are open from Tuesday to Saturday with interiors designed by Michele and menus created by Steven who spends much of his time at The Little Geranium in La Cala whilst Michele manages Marbella and recently recruited some fine dining chefs who worked alongside Michelin star chef Michael Dean from Belfast to head up the kitchens at The Little Geranium Marbella. www.thelittlegeranium.com

Behind the Mask

Steven Saunders had a dream of becoming a great chef from a very early age and trained at the Savoy Hotel in London before becoming the chef patron (meaning leading chef with management responsibilities) at the 15th Century Coaching Inn at Great Yeldham in Essex at the tender age of 19.

Having remained in that position for several years, he decided that it was time to run his own business and after managing to obtain a 100 per cent bank loan he opened his first restaurant The Pink Geranium in Cambridgeshire in 1986 which went on to win Michelin awards including a Red M and a Bib Gourmande for excellence and three AA rosettes as well as becoming a favourite of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

Indeed so enamoured was the late Princess of Wales with his crispy duck that he still produces a version of the dish in both Little Geranium restaurants here in Spain.

Always a bit of a showman and a self-proclaimed eccentric, Steven introduced a headline grabbing Rolls Royce service which collected customers and then took them home after their meal.

As the restaurant became better known, so it became one of the places to visit for a gourmet experience and Steven became a recognised celebrity in his own right, authoring 10 books which have sold hundreds of thousands of copies worldwide.

He became sought after by the media, appearing regularly on BBC TV’s Good Morning show and then becoming one of the main chefs on Ready Steady Cook appearing in over 200 episodes.

These appearances were followed up when he was appointed chef presenter on Channel Four’s Here’s one I made earlier and as presenter for Sky TV food channel.

As well as making all of these media appearances Steven found time to open The Sheene Mill Hotel near Cambridge (which his daughter now runs) The Lowry in Manchester, Brocket Hall Restaurant and Golf Club, Welwyn Garden City and Steven Saunders in Newmarket the first 100 per cent accredited organic restaurant.

During this same period, he won awards for Best Restaurant UK (for The Pink Geranium) Business Person of the Year, A Fellow of the Master chefs Association (about 30 worldwide) Young Entrepreneur of the Year and an Acorn (Caterer Magazine award) for Best Young Restaurateur.

Finally, this charismatic chef became CEO of Silverstone Hospitality based at Silverstone Racing Circuit Northamptonshire, operating all hospitality for Silverstone 365 days, F1 and Moto GP. His first marriage having come to an end in 2006, several years later, Steven become romantically involved with ballet dancer and choreographer Michele who says that when she moved to the UK to continue teaching and choreographing shows, they had a chance meeting in the world famous Novikov Restaurant in Mayfair where Michele confides “He swept me off my feet.”

Born in South Africa, Michele left to take up a professional role in ballet in Northern Ireland and the Republic owning ballet schools and she worked teaching young dancers across the province.

History is a funny thing.

It is often proclaimed that history will be the final arbiter and have the ultimate say in the actions taken by individuals today. But there are famous figures from the past that still seem to be remembered for obscure and inaccurate reasons.

Take Alfred the Great. He was a great administrator, religious reformer and sponsor of literacy. He was also instrumental in starting a process that led to the unification of the many kingdoms into a single entity that later became England.

But how were we school kids taught to remember him? For burning a batch of scones in some peasant hut in the Somerset Levels. Hardly fair.

How about King Richard I, aka the Lion Heart, regaled by some as England’s greatest king because of his exploits during the bloody Third Crusade.

Don’t believe it, because throughout his ten year reign he spent just six months in England and probably didn’t even speak the language.

Moreover after failing to secure Jerusalem, he fell out with his European pals (sound’s familiar) and got himself captured and ransomed off for 150,000 marks. A staggering £2.3 billion in today’s money, taking into account inflation.

Here’s a good one: Wat Tyler, the leader of The Peasants Revolt and no doubt Diane Abbott’s pin up boy. No guesses what Wat did for a living by the way.

Trains were thin on the ground in 1381, so Wat marched his peasant army from Canterbury to London to demand better working conditions, a limit on overtime and a new productivity deal.

Having slaughtered a few conservatives on the way and scaring the living daylights out of the boy king Richard II when London itself was threatened, all of Wat’s demands were met.

But then he get’s cocky, swears at the King and spits water over his feet, at which point London’s Lord Mayor – a sort of Sadiq Khan with tights – draws his dagger and ends Wat’s tiling days forever.

The result? All bets were called off, and amid much muttering and flatulence, the peasants about turned and went back

to serfing, empty handed.

History is littered with other examples. Take Jethro Tull: recognised as a great hero of the Agricultural Revolution with his famous seed drill. But what about his prowess at playing the flute whilst standing on one leg? Hardly ever mentioned.

It makes me wonder how history will judge Anthony Blair Esq., but I am not optimistic.

BIO James Hartley is an author and teacher who spends his time between Torre del Mar and Madrid.

He was born near Liverpool in 1973 but has lived most of his life abroad, in Scotland, Singapore, Syria and Thailand, among other places. This year The Invisible Hand, the first novel in a new series for Young Adults about children who get mixed up in the plots of Shakespeare´s plays was published. The second book, Cold Fire, based on Romeo and Juliet, will be published soon. He has also just published a book about Napoleon´s exile and death on St Helena, The Napoleon Diaries. James lives in Madrid with his wife Ana and their children Carmen, 8, and Matthew, 6.

The Costa del Sol Adventures

Jack Levy was sitting outside Malaga cathedral with his wife when his phone rang.

It was Mr Rabinovich. “Where are ya, ya big mutt?” Levy cried.

“Torre del Mar,” came the voice of his trusted bodyguard, reading a sign. Outside the call-box the beach was busy, children eating ice-cream under the blue-striped lighthouse as a plane trailing an advert droned downcoast.

“Tell me you´ve got the ring?”

“No, Mr Levy. I make a strong landing. I lose mind in landing for a few minutes.”

“You get that little…?” Levy cursed despite himself. He looked up at the bell-tower and rolled his eyes; waved at his worried wife and blew her a kiss. It´s fine, it´s fine.

“No, Mr Levy. They get away. But you don´t worry. I know this place. I work here many times. I find ring. I find ring, bring bad person back.”

“No! You find ring and you kill ´em. You hear me? You find my ring and you…”

As Mr Rabinovich held the receiver away from his ear, Costa del Sol steered his noisy moped around the roundabout behind the call-box, drawing to a halt at a kiosk whose plump owner was sitting outside on a deckchair.

“Looking for Michelangelo,” Costa tried, putting on his best Andalusian accent. It was the fifth time he´d asked the question in an hour.

“Si, si. Straight down there, past the fairground. It´s the last block on the right,” came the answer. Costa felt a surge of power light him up like Christmas.

“Jo´! ¿Que calor hace, eh?” said the big man, mopping his brow. My God, it´s hot, eh?

“Oh, yes,” Costa replied, snapping down his visor. “Hot indeed.”

Costa didn´t notice Mr Rabinovich staring at him as he drove off.

Costa Women was created in 2010 by Ali Meehan who had seen the concept of Women groups in Dubai and Thailand.

During the last seven years costawomen.com has grown to be an information point for women looking at moving to and around Spain and importantly is free to join.

With 23 different local meet ups around the country and the islands – from Barcelona to Ibiza, Madrid to Girona, Costa Blanca to Mallorca and of course, the Costa del Sol proving, if there was a need, that offering women the chance to make local connections is important.

The vibrant online website is now the go-to place

for women looking for social meet ups, or business networking.

Working with the mission statement to connect, inspire, enable and support women during their lives prior to and after their arrival in Spain, Costa Women provides somewhere to create blogs, share classified posts, look for jobs, or join one of the interest groups.

All of this, coupled with approximately 10 local events per month (from book clubs, to business networking breakfasts, informative talks, musical and charity events, dinners and lunches) makes for a fun community.

Costa Women welcomes 62 different nationalities (including Spanish members) and also hosts an annual International Women’s Day conference every year in the Marbella area.

Game of Thrones fans threaten Spanish heritage site

Beauty spot MARBELLA COUNCIL has launched a scheme to beautify its old town.

Felix Romero, a council spokesman, explained the plan aims "to enhance the image of the city as a world reference in tourism,” adding, "we will redesign and improve the existing green areas of the urban area, which make it particularly attractive."

Among other measures, 37 new hanging baskets will be installed in streetlamps located in the squares of Santo Cristo, Los Naranjos, Victoria, Practicante Manuel Cantos and Puente Malaga. They will also be installed on calles Ancha, Peral, Castillejos and Marques de Najera.

Sixty-four wooden and terracotta planters will also be distributed around

the town, with new seasonal flower arrangements and shrubs "to give more visibility" to the area. They will be located on calles Peral, Pedraza, Tetuan, Virgen de los Remedios, Enrique del Castillo and Fortaleza, and in the squares of Practicante Manuel Cantos and Puente Ronda.

According to Romero, green areas will be redesigned in different ways, with a total of 72 new planters being built on Avenida Nabeul, which will gain 34 new planters, Felix Rodriguez de la Fuente, which will gain four, as well as Parque de la Alameda, Plaza del Delfin, Avenida del Mar and Notario Luis Oliver Street, which will receive 34 new planters, as well as onTerrazas del Puerto, Plaza Juan de la Rosa and Avenida Miguel Cano.

SPANISH tourism authorities have been left worried for the welfare of a heritage site called San Juan de Gaztelugatxe in the country's Basque region after 75,000 tourists have visited its staircase, which was used to film the Game of Thrones's Dragonstone scenes.

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe’s winding steps frequently provided a backdrop in the series but until this summer, the site drew attention only from a small number of religious visitors.

The Spanish press have now reported that during July, approximately 2,500 tourists descended on the site each day.

Local tradition dictates that visitors must ring a bell that hangs above the church three times and make a wish, as

a reward for climbing the steps. But the bell-ringing has become a problem and officials are worried about the damage that the site could suffer.

They are now discussing limiting the number of tourists allowed to visit the site and charging visitors to climb the steps.

It's not the first instance of Game of Thrones induced tourism threatening a historic area. In 2016, the ancient city of Dubrovnik, which provided the backdrop for Kings Landing in the show, saw record numbers of tourists.

Just this week, the mayor of Dubrovnik revealed he was planning to cap the number of visitors to stop crowding.

Well, we’re still on the subject of adjectives as there are a lot of things to say about them apart from how they agree with nouns as we have already seen. Another thing we use adjectives for is to make comparisons.

For example, in English we say “big” “bigger” “the biggest”; “nice, nicer, the nicest”; “beautiful, more beautiful, the most beautiful”. We call these forms “comparative” and “superlative”.

The comparative compares two things - “My dad is bigger than your dad” whereas the superlative compares one thing in relation to all the rest “His dad is the biggest”.

This is very easy in Spanish as we simply place the word más in front of the adjective to form the comparative (comparing two) and el más (masc) or la más (feminine) to form the superlative (one in comparison to all the rest).

Mi papá es más grande que tu papá.

(Notice we use que to translate “than”).

Su papá es el más grande.

“His dad is the biggest”.

Now here is one more thing to learn about adjectives. Spanish has a very interesting way of using them to replace nouns. For example, we can say: el hombre viejo the old man - and this is perfectly correct but usually it gets reduced to simply el viejo. (We could translate this as “the old man” or simply: “the old one”). This works in the same way in the feminine. La chica guapa – the pretty girl, or simply la guapa (the pretty one). All adjectives work in this way – el gordo (the fat one - masc), la tonta (the silly one – fem), el gracioso (the funny one – masc), la fea (the ugly one – fem). Of course in Spanish we can identify whether the person is masculine or feminine, whereas

this meaning is lost in English. We can also use this to refer to things, of course. ¿Cuál de las cajas quieres?

La grande. (Which box do you want?

– the big one).

And finally, also related to adjectives, we can now learn the fifth way of saying “the”. If you remember we have learnt so far that there are masculine, feminine, singular and plural forms – el, la, los and las. The missing form is “lo”. Now lo has several meanings in Spanish, but at the moment we are only looking at when it means “the”. This is how it works, using three examples.

Lo interesante - “the interesting thing” Lo difícil - “the difficult thing” Lo curioso - “the curious thing” What can we say about these expressions? Well, interesante,

difícil and curioso are all adjectives.

However, they are not describing anything in particular. We are not saying “the interesting book”, “the difficult job”, “the curious idea”. These adjectives are really describing ideas or situations not words that are defined as masculine or feminine. In this case, the word for “the” cannot be el or la but is a neutral “the” – lo.

I’ll finish with a sentence for you to translate into English which hopefully illustrates some of what we’ve learnt.

Los dos hijos, el guapo y el feo, van a visitar a su familia este verano. Lo triste es que el guapo es más popular que el feo, aunque el feo es mucho más simpático, y es el más generoso de toda la familia. Lo más curioso de todo es que el guapo tiene muchos más amigos que el feo, pero el feo es el más feliz.

Booted out for being a bad singer Benidorm star Sherrie Hewson has revealed she was kicked out of a karaoke bar for her terrible singing during an alcohol-induced night in the city.

The 67-year-old actress, best known for roles in Coronation Street (1993– 1997, 2006), Crossroads (2001–2003), and Emmerdale (2004–2006) was partying with co-stars after filming the new series when she took to the stage to sing Carl Douglas’s 1974 No1 Kung Fu Fighting.

Sherrie told the English press: “Karaoke’s a big thing there but you have to be a good singer.

“All the singers in all the bars come at the same time and they all compete.

“I was singing Kung Fu Fighting after about 15 gin and tonics, but they told me to ‘please leave’ and that I was embarrassing everybody and I was, but I didn’t care by that time.

I was kicked out of a bar for being a bad singer.”

Sherrie – who plays hotel boss Joyce Temple-Savage – admitted she’s the last one standing when the cast go out and said her, Jake Canuso (who plays barman Mateo Castellanos) and

Tony Maudsley (hairdresser Kenneth Du Beke) are “very dangerous together.”

The tenth series of the hit ITV sitcom airs next year.

It was really cool to work with the legend of horror Freddie Krueger.

What an amazing experience, the best thing I have ever done

By Michael Cano A YOUNG man, Spike Parsons, was seen by talent scouts whilst appearing in a performance of Shrek at Stage Coach Marbella and was invited to Madrid for an audition.

At first his father Adrian was a little sceptical but they decided to make the journey from their home in Sotogrande and the 13-year-old found himself filming two episodes of Campfire Creepers a return to the old style horror movies such as Tales from the Crypt where a central narrative leads to different horror vignettes.

In this case, French director Alexandre Aja recruited horror legend Robert Englund (Freddie Krueger from the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise) to be the lead star and he

appears with Spike in two episodes of what could become a 22 part series for TV and VR outlets.

This is believed to be one of the very first Virtual Reality horror properties to be produced by a major player in the field and the two stories will be previewed at the Sitges Film Festival this October where Spike will appear in person alongside Robert Englund and Alexandre Aja. Spike is a very active boy who is captain of his local Under 14 team at Club Rugby del Estrecho in Sotogrande and enjoys boxing and gymnastics so was introduced to acting by his father in order to try to calm him down a little.

Now, the totally bilingual pupil at the Monte Rosa School in Estepona says that he

wants to become a professional actor and rugby player, combining both careers and had to learn to speak with a recognisable American accent for the films.

Speaking about the filming where he plays the narrator in Midnight March and also in Skull of Sam Spike told RTN "It was really cool to work with the legend of horror Freddie Krueger. What an amazing experience, the best thing I have ever done."

This ground breaking series from the director of The Hills Have Eyes and Piranha will extend the barriers of Virtual Reality filming and will be released this Halloween (October 31) through the store managed by VR specialists Oculus Rift.

If you can’t wait until then, the two episodes will be screened at the Samsung VR Cinema at the Sitges Film Festival daily from October 7 to 15.

€700,000 raised in 15 years for butterfly children

ALOHA GOLF CLUB hosted the 15th Butterfly Children Golf & Ball in aid of Debra Butterfly Children´s Charity.

A total of 163 golfers and 166 dinner guests gathered to show their support for the cause and which raised an outstanding €39,000, bringing the total amount raised throughout the event´s 15 years to more than €700,000.

The event was originally started by 4 members of the club in 2002 and has since become a regular occasion in the club´s calendar.

Each consecutive year, extreme solidarity has been shown by Aloha Golf Club, its members, the restaurant, and by the community of Marbella.

This year was an anniversary special and in true celebratory style it did not fail to deliver.

On Saturday the enthusiastic golfers enjoyed the newly renovated lush

greens of the 72-par course with the opportunity to win a prize on every hole.

Thanks to the Stableford Individual Modality a further top 5 ladies and mens luxury prizes were up for grabs also.

On Sunday evening guests enjoyed a night of luxury and glamour whilst wining and dining on the fabulous culinary creations of the Aloha Golf Club restaurant and the fine wines donated by Vinopolis.

The night, conducted by Ricky Lavazza was filled with many highlights beginning with the presentation of the award for Collaborator of the Year to the Firemen of Marbella.

The drama continued with the raffle and auction with prizes donated by prestigious golfers Miguel Angel Jimenez and Michael Campbell. This was closely followed by spectacular fireworks donated by Pirotecnia Lara and finished off with the amazing sounds of Mr

Thanks to the success of last weekend´s event and those before it, the charity has a team of eight health and social care professionals who continue to support the 255 butterfly children and their families living throughout Spain and the babies who are yet to be born.

health The secret to the perfect shave Does your morning shave seem more like a chore than a pleasure? For many men, staving off stubble is just another step in a.m. drudgery, not to mention a source of skin irritation and razor burn.

Once upon a time, though, shaving was an art form, and barbers were the purveyors of the perfect shave. With the right tools, tips, and techniques, that perfect shave can be yours every morning.

For hair to be beautiful it needs to be fed from within. The type, thickness and curl of your hair depend on heredity, but its condition depends on your diet and how you care for it. Follow these simple steps for perfectly healthy hair.

1. Turn down the heat Avoid blow-dryers, curling wands and electric heated rollers, as they make hair brittle.

Instead, allow your hair to dry naturally after using a towel.

2. Feed your hair Make sure you're eating a healthy diet.

The condition of your hair depends on the internal state of your body. A diet that is adequate in vitamins and minerals, especially silica, iron, sulphur, zinc, the B vitamins and vitamin C, is vital for good hair nutrition.

3. Protect your hair from the elements Wear a sun hat in summer and a bathing

cap when swimming because the sun, salt and chlorine all damage your hair. For extra hair protection, rub a little olive oil onto the ends of your hair before you go swimming.

4. Be wary of prescription medicines The contraceptive Pill, diet pills, thyroid drugs, cortisone and antibiotics are just some that can cause brittleness, and even hair loss.

5. Massage your head to improve scalp health Besides daily brushing, it’s the best thing you can do for your circulation. Use your fingertips and palms and rotate them in small circles for 3–5 minutes every day.

6. Always condition For a rich conditioning treatment, warm ½ cup apricot kernel or sweet almond oil and massage it into your scalp and hair. Wrap a warm, damp towel around your head, and then cover it with a plastic shower cap. After about 45 minutes, shampoo it out.

1. Use a gel You can use fancier, more expensive products, but the shaving gels sold in the supermarket will give you just what you need.

2. Pick a razor with multiple blades and some heft A straight razor works best, but there’s a trial-and-error learning curve involved that could lead to nicks and cuts. For the next best thing, try a razor with at least two parallel blades in a disposable head.

3. Shave in the direction of your natural growth Never shave against the hair, especially in the neck area - it’s a big no-no to go against the hair. Always shave with the hair.

4. Shave more than once The first time is to get rid of the hair. The second time is to get a closer cut, and the

third time is to give a light exfoliation over the skin.

5. Consider electric for sensitive skin If skin irritation and razor burn are consistent problems, an electric razor might be a good choice. If you want to stay with traditional wet shaving, consider shaving on alternate days and be sure to shave only with the grain of the hair.

Castor oil for naturally thick eyebrows Castor oil is one of the most effective remedies to boost the growth of your eyebrows. It contains protein, vitamins, fatty acids and antioxidants that nourish the hair follicles and promote hair growth.

Plus, it is helpful in resisting any microorganisms that hamper eyebrow hair growth.

1. Soak a cotton swab in pure castor oil and apply it on each eyebrow.

2. Massage gently with your fingertips for 2 to 3 minutes.

3. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes or overnight.

4. Wash it off with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser.

5. Repeat once daily for a few weeks until you notice improvement.

Note: Stop using castor oil if it causes any irritation or burning.

STRONG CONNECTION: Parkinson’s disease in close up People with Parkinson's disease are about four times more likely to develop melanoma skin cancer, and conversely, people with melanoma have a fourfold higher risk of getting Parkinson's, researchers report.

Although doctors have known about the connection between these diseases, they still don't know why having one increases the risk of the other.

"Future research should focus on identifying common genes, immune responses and environmental exposures that may link these two diseases," said study first author Dr. Lauren Dalvin, who's with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

"If we can pinpoint the cause of the

association between Parkinson's disease and melanoma, we will be better able to counsel patients and families about their risk of developing one disease in the setting of the other," she said.

Parkinson's disease is a progressive brain disorder. Symptoms of the disease include tremors, stiffness and difficulty walking.

Melanoma is a form of skin cancer.

It occurs much less often than other forms of skin cancer, but causes a large majority of skin cancer deaths.

Melanoma starts as a new spot on the skin, or when a mole changes in size, shape or colour.

Previous studies has suggested that the Parkinson's drug levodopa

may play a role in melanoma, but the findings from this new study and others don't support that theory, the researchers said.

The new study included nearly 1,000 people with Parkinson's disease and compared them to almost 3,000 people without the movement disorder. The study also included more than 1,500 with melanoma.

The researchers said since there is such a strong connection between these diseases, doctors treating patients for either disease should watch for signs of the other. The researchers also recommended that doctors counsel patients about their risk of the other condition.

auty tips Whiten teeth with coconut oil Oil pulling with the likes of coconut oil has been quite a trend with celebrities such as Gywneth Paltrow leading the wagon.

1. Start with a teaspoon of coconut oil. Place it in your mouth and allow it to warm until it liquefies.

2. Swish the oil in your mouth for 15-20 minutes making sure it covers all the areas of your teeth and gums. DO NOT gargle.

3. Spit out the oil in the toilet or bin, not in the sink- it can clog drains.

4. Rinse out your mouth with warm water and brush as usual.

Do this every day or a few times a week.

Alternatively, you can add coconut oil to your toothbrush and use it to brush or use a clean cloth to rub it on your teeth.

Note that coconut oil is solid at room temperature and you may have to chew on it for a while to allow it to liquify.

Pulling with coconut oil to whiten teeth is best done in the morning preferably while in the shower.

How can deaf-blind people communicate?

This depends on the severity of the sight and hearing loss, many people use sign language if their vision is good enough.

They can also use tactile sign language, where the deaf-blind person puts their hands over the signer’s hands to feel the shape, movement and location of the signs.

FOAPS provide interpreters, who can help the deaf-blind communicate and interact with the world.

Everyday vegetable soup Did you over-indulge this summer?

With family and friends visiting, the barbecue sizzling and the drinks flowing, it’s normal to feel a bit ‘full’ come the end of the season.

If you’re considering a detox but don’t want to spend hours in the kitchen, a basic vegetable soup is the best place to start.

One of the best things about salmon, other than its numerous health benefits, is that it cooks so quickly.

If using a fish basket, you may turn the fish once, halfway through cooking time INGREDIENTS 2 8 oz salmon fillets 3 tbsp dry sherry 2 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp sesame oil 1 tbsp fresh ginger, finely minced 2 tbsp butter 1/4 tsp freshly ground pepper lemon slices

EVERYDAY VEGETABLE SOUP This basic vegetable soup can be made with any combination of fresh or frozen vegetables, so the soup will taste a little different each time. The recipe can easily be doubled or even tripled to feed all the vegetable soup fans at your table.

INGREDIENTS 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 cups chopped onions or thinly sliced leeks (whites only) 1 cup thinly sliced celery 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning Coarse salt and ground pepper 3 cans (14 1/2 ounces each) reducedsodium vegetable or chicken broth 1 can (28 ounces) diced tomatoes, with juice 1 tablespoon tomato paste 8 cups mixed fresh or frozen

Grilled salmon with ginger sauce

DIRECTIONS 1. In a shallow glass dish, combine the sherry, soy vegetables, such as carrots, corn, green beans, lima beans, peas, potatoes, and courgettes (cut larger vegetables into smaller pieces) DIRECTIONS 1. Heat oil in a large stockpot over medium heat. Add onions or leeks, celery, and Italian seasoning; season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring frequently, until onions are translucent,

5 to 8 minutes.

2. Add broth, tomatoes and their juice, tomato paste, and 3 cups water to pot; bring mixture to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer, and cook, uncovered, 20 minutes.

3. Add vegetables to pot, and return to a simmer. Cook, uncovered, until vegetables are tender, 20 to 25 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, as desired. Let cool before storing.

Snappy pork kebabs

What could be easier! Barbecue sauce and Italian salad dressing combined with a few extra ingredients makes a snappy and delightful marinade.

INGREDIENTS 1 1/2 lb boneless pork top loin, cubed 1/2 tsp hot pepper sauce 1/4 cup Italian salad dressing 1/2 green pepper, cut into chunks 1/2 red pepper, cut into chunks 1 14 oz can pineapple chunks in juice, drained 1 tsp lemon juice 3 tbsp honey 1/2 cup barbecue sauce

sauce, sesame oil, and ginger. Place the fish in the marinade for 30 minutes.

2.Preheat the grill, and brush the grids with vegetable oil. Dot the salmon with butter, and grill on MEDIUM - HIGH for 10 minutes. The skin should easily separate from the fish when it is cooked.

Place the salmon on a platter, garnish with fresh lemon slices and serve.

DIRECTIONS 1. In a large plastic Ziploc bag, combine barbecue sauce, salad dressing, honey, lemon juice, and hot pepper sauce. Mix well. Add pork cubes and marinate at room temperature 1 hour or up to 24 hours in the refrigerator.

2. Reserving marinade, alternately skewer pork with peppers and pineapple chunks. Grill over MEDIUM - LOW heat 4 - 6 minutes per side, turning once. During last 3 minutes of grilling, brush reserved marinade over kebabs.

Chicken & ham lasagne

This comforting dish of layered pasta sheets, meat and spinach is topped with gooey, melted cheese freeze now for entertaining later

Ingredients 6 boneless skinless chicken breasts (around 700g) ½ medium onion, sliced 2 bay leaves 200ml white wine 100g butter 100g plain flour 500ml semi-skimmed milk 140g sliced smoked ham, cut into strips 200g young spinach leaves 225g no pre-cook dried lasagne sheets (about 20 sheets) 200g ready-grated mozzarella 25g Parmesan, finely grated Method 1. Put the chicken breasts in a medium saucepan with the onion, bay leaves and wine. Pour over just enough water to cover, around 200ml. Put a lid

on top and bring to a gentle simmer for 15 mins Transfer the chicken to a board and strain the liquid into a jug.

2. Melt the butter in a large non-stick saucepan over a medium heat. Stir in the flour with a wooden spoon and cook for about a minute. Gradually add the milk, a little at a time, stirring well between each addition to ensure the sauce stays smooth. Once all the milk has been added, stir in the reserved cooking liquid and continue cooking for a further 2-3 mins. Adjust the seasoning to taste. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6.

3. Cut the chicken into small chunks and add the ham and spinach. Spoon a third of the chicken mixture into the base of a 3-litre lasagne dish (about 26 x 18cm). Top with a third of the lasagne sheets. Repeat the layers twice more, ending with lasagne. Scatter the mozzarella and Parmesan on top and season with black pepper. Bake for about 25 mins or until the lasagne is tender, the topping is well browned and the filling hot.

Get ants out – and keep them out!

Don’t wait until ants have overrun your kitchen to find out how to get rid of them. To get them out - and keep them out, follow the nine simple steps below.

1. First, understand the ant colony and its queen.

To solve an ant problem, you need to first eliminate the ones you don’t see to get rid of the ones you do see.

The queen - the one who lays all the eggs - never leaves her nest.

She just stays there, being fed by the workers (the ones you see) and continuing to reproduce more ants. So, you can spray and spray the ants you see and she'll just keep making more to take their place.

2. Watch the trailing ants.

The first step in controlling ants is simply watching the ones that enter your home to see where they are coming from and going to. An ant will seek food, but once it finds food, the ant will return to its nest with the crumb, leaving a scent trail behind it. By doing so, the ant leaves a trail for its fellow worker ants to help in gathering the food.

3. Don't spray the ants!

As discussed in point 1, the ants that you see are worker ants. Their job is to find food and take it back to feed the queen and her young, who are being groomed as the next generation of worker ants.

Because of this, these worker ants are your ticket into the colony. If you spray and kill these

ants, the colony will simply send out more workers and you'll never reach the queen. So, what do you do? See point 4: 4. Set out ant bait.

Instead of eliminating the worker ants, use them! Following all label directions, place ant bait stations along the trail you identified in point 2.

The workers will find the bait, carry it back to the nest and feed the queen, eventually killing her and eliminating future populations.

5. Hold off on cleaning Although it is good to eliminate other food sources, you don't want to mop away the ant's odour trail yet. The trail will now lead the workers to your bait instead.

6. Be patient.

The ants will carry the insecticide bait back to the nest, but it can take several days to eliminate the colony, or even a few weeks if the colony is very large or it has several queens. (Some ant species do.) You may even need

BE GONE: Putting an end to that aggravation is worth the effort! to replace the bait station if they empty the food or liquid bait.

7. Know when to spray.

If the trailing ants have led you to an outdoor, below-ground nest -- now can be the time to spray. Drenching the nest with an approved insecticide spray (following all label directions) can be effective.

8. Keep it clean.

Sanitation is critical for the prevention and control of any pest.

Appliance repair company GoAssist.co.uk recently conducted a national fridge cleanliness study, involving 2,000 UK adults, and the findings were pretty grim.

According to the research, the average British fridge hasn’t been properly cleaned for 87 days. That’s more than three times longer than the recommended length of time between cleans. Shockingly, almost one in ten Britons can’t even remember the last time they cleaned their fridge.

Brighton is the UK’s dirty fridge capital. 17 per cent of the city’s residents can’t remember the last time they cleaned their fridge and among those who do remember, the average time since the last clean is 138 days.

Glasgow has the dirtiest fridges, with more residents than anywhere else in the UK leaving their fridge without a clean for more than a year.

The research also looked at workplace fridges as part of the study and if you’re thinking of taking yesterday’s Spaghetti Bolognese into work today, you might want to think again.

Four in ten (38 per cent) respondents who regularly kept their lunch in an office fridge said they had no idea when the fridge was last cleaned out.

HEALTH RISK: Grim findings on fridge cleaning habits Equally, if not more alarming than fridge cleanliness, was the lack of understanding around how the appliances actually work. Just over 10 percent of study participants wrongly believe that - because they’re temperature controlled fridges require no cleaning at all.

James Holden, spokesperson for GoAssist.co.uk, believes misconceptions about how fridges actually work are behind the problem.

“According to our research, a worrying amount of people wrongly believe they don’t need

to regularly clean their fridge. But even in a cool environment, food can go off and bacteria can rapidly contaminate other items. It’s really important for hygiene and maintenance reasons to regularly clean your fridge.

Porsche unveils the 911 GT3 The 911 GT3 with Touring Package will be unveiled at the 67th International Motor Show (IAA), which is taking place until September 24, in Frankfurt. Instead of the fixed rear wing, when equipped with the optional Touring Package, the GT3 will have an adaptive rear spoiler similar to that of the 911 Carrera models. Beneath its understated exterior is pure motorsport-derived technology: The four-litre naturally aspirated flatsix engine develops 500 horsepower and generates 339 lb.-ft. of torque. The 911 GT3 with Touring Package sprints from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.8 seconds and reaches a top track speed of 196 miles per hour.

The Touring Package will be available exclusively in combination with the sixspeed manual transmission.

The name “Touring Package” harkens back to a variant of the 911 Carrera RS from 1973. The very pure 911 design and classic interior features were key elements of this model. The new 911 GT3 when equipped with the Touring Package follows the same concept, and retains the two-seater arrangement of the 911 GT3. Apart from certain Alcantara-covered interior fittings, almost all 911 GT3 options are also available in combination with the

Touring Package. This includes all available exterior colours, wheel choices, the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) system, the front axle lift system, LED headlights, three seat options, and the Sport Chrono Package.

The UK new car market reported its fifth consecutive month of decline in August, according to figures published by Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Registrations fell by 6.4 per cent, after a record August in 2016.

However, with more than 76,000 new cars registered, the performance still represents the third biggest August in 10 years. Year to date, the market remained broadly in line with expectations, down 2.4 per cent, with 1,640,241 new cars joining British roads in the first eight months.

Superminis and small family cars remained the most popular types in August, accounting for more than half (58.3 per cent) of registrations. However, SUVs, larger family cars and executives were the only segments to grow, up 7.9 per cent, 2.2 per cent and 1.1 per cent respectively.

Meanwhile, more people chose to get behind the wheel of an alternatively fuelled vehicle (AFV) than ever before in the month, accounting for a 5.2 per cent share of the market. Demand for petrol hybrid and pure electric battery powered

Tyson furious over hearing delay UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) insists it is trying to resolve Tyson Fury’s hearing “as soon as possible” following criticism from the British boxer on social media.

Both former heavyweight world champion Fury and his cousin, Hughie Fury, were charged on 24 June last year with the “presence of a prohibited substance” following drugs tests.

29-year-old Fury appealed on social media for a decision on his future to be made soon.

UKAD has issued a statement, suggesting that “various reasons” have caused the delay and the organisation are currently pursuing a new date.

It read: “In response to public comments made by Mr Tyson Fury, UK Anti-Doping wishes to clarify the status of the charges it issued against him and Mr Hughie Fury on 24 June 2016 (which charges were previously confirmed by UKAD in a statement).

“All parties are currently awaiting a ruling from the NADP tribunal on an application made by the athletes to exclude certain evidence.

Once that ruling is received, the matter will proceed to a hearing on the merits. UK Anti-Doping is currently pushing for dates to be fixed for that hearing to take place as soon as possible.

“It is therefore inaccurate to suggest either that UK Anti-Doping is failing to pursue these charges as quickly as possible, or that Mr Tyson Fury and Mr Hughie Fury are being treated differently to other athletes.”
