SolidRail® guardrail is a cost effective, flexible and lightweight modular edge protection system fully compliant with the latest BS13700:2021 standards for permanent installations.

This easy to install non-penetrative system is designed around a cantilevered weighted stanchion formed from a rectangular section which gives a much smaller end profile than more commonly used tube, greatly reducing its visual impact.

The horizontal tubes are connected to the stanchions via a unique hidden drop in fitting that does not interfere with the aesthetic of the stanchion. Tubes come with a ferruled end allowing fast easy fitting without the need for an additional joiner.

The system comes with a full range of fittings for corners and deviations and can be supplied with locking gates and a clip-on toe-board to allow the guardrail to be customised to suit your roof area.

What is BS13700:2021?

Published in July 2021, BS 13700:2021 finally provides clear guidance for the design, performance, testing, and inspection of permanently installed counterweighted roof guardrail systems.

Prior to this date these types of systems had been installed under standards for temporary installations (EN 13374) or machinery guarding (EN 14122) as no specific standard was available.

Neither of these standards are fully correct for a permanent application nor do they look in detail at wind loads for the specific site where the guardrail is located leading to ambiguity in the industry and incidences of handrail being blown off roofs.

This new standard was specifically written to get rid of this ambiguity and requires a far more stringent testing procedure to be followed for counterweighted guardrail systems that are to be permanently installed as edge protection. The standard also offers more detailed guidance for those designing, installing, maintaining, and inspecting these types of systems.

Key Points in BS13700:2021 that are additional to EN 13374 •

Each installation will require site specific wind speed calculations carrying out, conforming to criteria set out in BS EN 19911-4:2005+A1:2010, prior to commencement of installation. The system design must then accommodate for these findings.

Every installation must come supplied with a System Technical File. This is to be held by to the duty holder for the life of the system and must be made available to parties tasked with the inspection and maintenance of the guardrail.

It is now the duty holder’s responsibility to ensure that an annual inspection of the system is carried out on permanently installed counterweighted guardrail to the manufacturer’s recommended examination regime.

Summary SolidRail® is an aluminium guardrail suitable for flat roofs with a slope of up to 5º. It is on average 30% lighter than steel guardrails, reducing the loads applied to the building often an important consideration in retrofit situations.
