Europa Redux is a manuscript consisting of 106 poster-sized sheets, each covered with a grid of uniformly sized, handmade color illustrations. Containing nearly 7000 individual images, the manuscript was created by an unknown artist, presumably in Switzerland, between 1940-1946.
These extraordinary illustrations depict various scenes and subjects, ranging across genres and styles: landscapes, portraits, still lifes, domestic scenes, pictograms and icons.
Strikingly, many of the images are captioned with words of a seemingly imaginary language.
Discovered by a German book dealer and purchased by Heather O’Donnell of Honey & Wax Booksellers, the manuscript has since been acquired by a Louisville-based art collector, who continues to unravel the mystery of this remarkable work.
