❶.1 EN: Europa Nostra: Integrated vision for interaction between place and landscape

Water is a major element in the landscape: rivers, canals, lakes, shoreline, bog-lands and marshes.

An integrated, symbiotic relationship between town / village and landscape is reflected in many Places. Europa Nostra is aware that the threat to this relationship through uncontrolled, inappropriate, unalleviated development, may damage long term sustainability. Project ENtopia - Our Places in Europe is an opportunity for towns and villages to identify their particular landscape setting and to work towards effective local community appreciation of the interaction between built heritage and nature in the surrounding landscape. Europa Nostra recognises that a substantial threat may exist for landscapes which are within and surrounding major conurbations such as London, Paris, Rome, Athens etc and will campaign for the highest environmental quality to be maintained for the health and wellbeing of those who live in such conurbations whilst appreciating the need to be close to nature at the same time.

In Giethoorn, Netherlands, below, described as ‘the village in the Netherlands with no roads’, canals are still part of the traffic system. Protection of this landscape is ensured through national designation of a nature reserve which surrounds the village.
