Ecologia Urbana, Ajuntament de Barcelona PRESENTATION OF THE SITE WITH REGARDS TO STRATEGY Marina del Prat Vermell is the area between Metal·lúrgia, Foc, Cisell and Mare de Déu del Port Streets. Under the Metropolitan Master Plan Amendment, this former industrial area is being turned into a new mixed-use district in which homes and businesses are perfectly compatible, making it one of the highest profile parts of Barcelona. The area covers nearly 80 ha, equivalent to 40 blocks of the Barcelona Expansion district. The site was proposed for the Europan 13 competition to receive urban renewal proposals for the adaptable city, specifically a self-sufficient social housing project in this new district. A larger study area was also proposed for the competition in order to prompt ideas about the synergies between the different facets of the urban environment. HOW IS THE SITE CONNECTED TO THE SESSION TOPIC - THE ADAPTABLE CITY? The Marina del Prat Vermell district is in itself an example of a forward-looking adaptable city in transformation. The new social housing building included in the competition should also help to shape a social habitat for the society of today and tomorrow, i.e. taking into account the new personal and collective needs and the social changes that may occur in the future. The project is also facing the great challenge of adapting to the city’s new environmental requirements. DID YOU DEFINE A SPECIFIC PROCESS FOR THE URBAN DEVELOPMENT OF THE SITE AFTER EUROPAN COMPETITION? Urban development in the Marina del Prat Vermell district consists of the application of the current Master Plan. In the current socioeconomic context, it is particularly important and indeed urgent to implement social housing projects such as the building included in this Europan competition.
