The Book Nook: Top Picks from Our Readers

We’re thrilled to launch the another edition of “The Book Nook”! This time, we’re excited to share book recommendations from two passionate readers: Jana Munné and Clara Amorín. Additionally, Ms. Esther from the EISB Team and School Director has joined in to share her top picks for this month. Their picks are full of great reads that will keep you entertained. We can’t wait to share even more interesting books with you in future editions. Happy reading!

CLARA

JANA MUNNÉ’S RECOMMENDATION: ANTES DE DICIEMBRE BY JOANA MARCÚS

Jana Munné, from Secondary Y3B, discovered her love for reading thanks to her friends and classmates, who recommended books they enjoyed Ever since she got hooked on Amanda Black years ago, she has been passionate about books especially romance and mystery, her two favourite genres

When asked for her recent favourite, Jana’s pick is a delightful romance trilogy perfect for young readers “This book is great for those who enjoy love stories,” she says It follows the life of Jenna, a university student whose relationship with her boyfriend, Jack, faces some toughchallenges

It’s a story full of humor and heartfelt situations, making it an ideal read for those starting to explore romance What makes this trilogy especially captivating is its fastpaced narrative, with plenty of dialogue that feels almost like reading a script for a movie

Jana shares, “Jenna and Jack are polar opposites, with Jenna being someone who prefers familiarity, and Jack, on the other hand, is dealing with family problems but always manages to stay humorous ” The books are not too long, about 300 pages each, making them easy to read in a short time

RECOMMENDATION: HOOKY BY MIRIAM BONASTRE

Clara Amorín, from Primary Y4A enjoys reading before bedtime and sometimes before dinner. When asked by Angie, the school librarian, about her favourite books, she enthusiastically shares how her love for a particular comic book series began

Her latest favorite read is this comic series full of magic, adventure, and a touch of mischief. What started as a school assignment quickly became an exciting discovery when Clara’s mom bought her the first book She loved it so much that she couldn’t stop there she had to get the second and third books as well!

Hooky tells the story of Dorian and Dani, two siblings who miss the bus to their witch school From that moment on, their lives take a wild turn They encounter a wicked aunt, a mysterious guardian who teaches them witchcraft, and even face anti-witch rules Clara says she loves the series because "it’s packed with adventure and sparks my imagination!"

This isn’t Clara’s first magical read Before Hooky, she enjoyed Las Brujas de Brooklyn and is already planning her next adventure with Sabatilles de Ballet by Noel Streatfield

ESTHER’S MUST-READ LIST

Our School General Director, Ms. Esther Herranz sees books as more than just stories they’re a way to spark curiosity, challenge the way we think, and share important values. “Without curiosity, there is no learning,” she says. For her, the best reading moments happen with a good book, a hot cup of coffee and the sound of the sea in the background

She has picked out some of her favourite books to share, each bringing something special whether it’s about leadership, staying true to yourself, the magic of childhood imagination, or how movement can shape the way we learn

START WITH WHY: HOW GREAT LEADERS INSPIRE EVERYONE TO TAKE ACTION – SIMON SINEK

Why do some leaders inspire change while others struggle to make an impact? Simon Sinek’s Start with Why reminds us that success isn’t about how we do things, but why we do them Through examples like Martin Luther King Jr and Steve Jobs, this book explores how great leaders captivate and motivate people with a clear sense of purpose

THE STORY OF FERDINAND – MUNRO LEAF (ILLUSTRATED BY ROBERT LAWSON)

This timeless classic is a book Ms Esther recommends to everyone Ferdinand is a gentle yet powerful story about staying true to oneself Instead of embracing strength and aggression, Ferdinand the bull prefers to sit under a tree and enjoy the scent of flowers A simple yet profound reminder that happiness comes from embracing who we truly are

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE – MAURICE SENDAK

Maurice Sendak’s iconic picture book takes us on a journey into the imagination of Max, a rebellious child who sails to an island inhabited by wild creatures. This beautifully illustrated tale, first published in 1963, changed children's literature forever by capturing the complexity of childhood emotions and the comforting pull of home.

SPARK: THE REVOLUTIONARY NEW SCIENCE OF EXERCISE AND THE BRAIN – JOHN J. RATEY (WITH ERIC HAGERMAN)

This book holds special significance for Ms Esther, as it played a key role in shaping the PE4Life Programme at EISB Based on the idea that “Movement Improves Learning Experience in Schools” (M I L E S ), this European initiative highlights the connection between physical activity and cognitive development SPARK explains how exercise enhances learning, boosts mood, and improves overall well-being principles that EISB applies every day to help students thrive

Whether you’re looking for inspiration, a nostalgic read, or a new perspective on learning, Ms Esther’s recommendations offer something for everyone Which one will you pick up next?

Learning Through Play: FY2’s Restaurant Experience

This past month, our Foundation Year 2 students embarked on an exciting journey into the world of food and dining

As part of their food unit, the classroom was transformed into a lively restaurant, where children had the opportunity to experience the different roles involved in running a dining establishment.

Through symbolic play, students developed essential language skills by engaging in role-play, taking orders, and using food-related vocabulary The activity also reinforced math skills, as they counted items, recognised numbers, and handled pretend money for transactions Moreover, their social and emotional development flourished as they worked together, took turns, and problem-solved in various restaurant roles Additionally, this hands-on experience strengthened their cognitive and fine motor skills, requiring them to plan, sequence tasks, write orders, and prepare pretend meals

This activity was closely linked to our Manners Programme, which goes beyond teaching children about nutrition While playing in the restaurant, students practised table manners, autonomy, and respectful social interaction They learned to sit with proper posture, use the correct cutlery, speak with an appropriate tone, and serve themselves with confidence These skills are essential in helping them develop into polite, independent, and considerate individuals

The children are having so much fun while learning a perfect example of how play can be a powerful tool for education!

Exploring Ancient Egypt: A Hands-On Mummification Experiment!

Our Secondary Year 1 students recently embarked on an exciting journey to Ancient Egypt! In class, they explored the origins of mummies what they were, why they existed, and the fascinating rituals behind the mummification process To bring history to life, they took part in a fun and educational mummification workshop using a hands-on science experiment.

The students replicated the mummification process with bananas and sausages, using materials like baking soda and salt to preserve them By following precise instructions and patiently observing over time, they were able to track the different stages of the mummification process and note the physical changes in both of them

Through this interactive experience, our students developed a range of valuable skills They deepened their understanding of Ancient Egyptian history, practised following detailed instructions, and improved their communication skills by observing, describing, and recording their findings.

They also engaged in mathematical thinking through weight measurements and fostered creative problem-solving all while having fun with hands-on, practical science!

This immersive activity brought history and science together in a memorable and engaging way, and we couldn’t be prouder of their curiosity and enthusiasm!

Job Shadowing in Munich: Ms Elena’s Journey

As a teacher, I firmly believe in continuous learning and professional development, which is why I was so excited to take part in the Erasmus+ Job Shadowing Programme at Munich International School (MIS) This experience gave me the chance to immerse myself in a different educational environment, observe new teaching methodologies, and gain valuable insights that I can bring back to my own classroom at EISB

During my stay at MIS, I had the opportunity to observe IB DP Chemistry and MYP Science classes, which allowed me to see how these programmes are implemented It was fascinating to explore the different methodologies used to engage students in scientific learning and critical thinking

Beyond the formal classroom observation, I also had the chance to discuss the organisation and management of science laboratories, a key space for hands-on learning Seeing how laboratories are structured and utilised at MIS gave me fresh ideas on how to enhance practical science education for my own students.

This experience was not only about learning from others but also about building connections for the future I was able to discuss potential cultural and scientific exchanges that could enrich both schools and provide new opportunities for students to collaborate internationally

I am incredibly grateful to EISB for encouraging teachers to continue growing, developing, and bringing the best of themselves to the classroom Programmes like Erasmus+ give educators the opportunity to expand their horizons, gain new perspectives, and ultimately improve the learning experience for our students

A huge thank you to Munich International School for their warm welcome and to EISB for supporting teacher development I look forward to applying everything I have learned and sharing these insights with my students and colleagues!

MUNOD 2025 – A Day of Debate and Diplomacy

On Friday 7th March, our MUN students took part in an internal conference known as MUNOD (Model United Nations Open Days) The event focused on two pressing global issues: “Fostering education in Less Economically Developed Countries” and “Banning access to social media to youngsters under 16 – The case of Australia.”

This marked our third MUN conference of the academic year, following our delegation’s participation at BMUN 2024 in October at St Paul’s School in Barcelona, and BOMUN 2025 this February in Boston

Throughout the day, students from Secondary Year 4, the National Baccalaureate, and the IB Programme engaged in intense and enriching debates, showcasing their public speaking and diplomatic skills Their performance was made possible thanks to the valuable support of our Secondary Year 3 students, who took on the role of Admin Staff for the conference

Looking ahead, our MUN team is already preparing for the next international event: BIMUN-ESADE 2025, which will take place from the 24th to 26th April This conference is particularly special as it is organised by both former and current Baccalaureate students

We look forward to seeing their continued growth on the global MUN stage!

Meet Ms Thaís Bernal: A Passion for Dance and Dedication to the School Community

Thaís has been a part of the EISB family for nearly twelve years She first joined the school as a ballet teacher in the extracurricular programme and also taught Spanish dance to exchange students Later, she was invited to join the school’s secretary office; a role she accepted with gratitude Over the years, she has built strong relationships with families and colleagues and says that EISB feels like her second home

Her journey in dance began at just four years old Sensitive and imaginative from a young age, she felt a natural connection to performing and movement Her parents recognised her talent early on and enrolled her in a dance school, where her passion only grew Thaís later trained at the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona, and her professional career took her to renowned theatres and stages Although performing was a dream come true, teaching has become her true calling: “There’s something incredibly special about sharing what you love with your students and watching them grow and fall in love with dance in their own way.”

Thaís continues to pass on that love through the school’s ballet programme, and this year is particularly exciting as students will be taking part once again in the official Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) examinations. Held on Tuesday 29th April (International Dance Day) during EISB’s Cultural Week, this event marks an important milestone. The RAD is a globally respected institution known for promoting excellence in classical ballet training Thaís is incredibly proud of her students: “They’ve worked so hard week after week, and seeing their dedication has been inspiring These exams give meaning to all their effort and show them how far they’ve come ”

For Thaís, ballet is about much more than steps and technique She believes dance nurtures both the body and the mind: it builds focus, memory, creativity, confidence and emotional awareness “I always tell my students to do everything with passion. Believe in yourself and never be afraid to shine With effort and love for what you do, there is nothing you can’t do ”

More than a teacher and a valued member of the school office, Thaís brings heart, energy and inspiration to EISB every single day
