ALISON DAVIDSON GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME TO SANDY PARK, HOME OF THE EXETER CHIEFS. We are delighted to be hosting what should be a fantastic game of rugby against our Welsh rivals, Cardiff University.

As Director of Sport, I am incredibly proud to see the success of so many of our students, in their sporting careers, but also their academic studies.

This year, we have a new Head of Men’s Rugby in Gareth Elliott and the side have so far been performing incredibly well, sitting at the top of the table, with just two defeats all season.

Our rugby programme here at the university continues to go from strength-to-strength, as does our relationship with Exeter Chiefs.

To see so many players in both the men’s and women’s teams progressing into playing for the Chiefs on a regular basis is testament to the hard work that they and the coaching staff her at the university continue to put in behind the scenes.

GARETH ELLIOTT GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME TO SANDY PARK FOR THE ANGLO-WELSH CLASH AGAINST CARDIFF. It’s been an incredible season so far for us in BUCS Super Rugby and I’ve been so impressed with how such a large number of our squad have stepped up and shown what they can do at this level.

Before I go any further, I have to place on record my thanks to Alison Davidson and all the staff within the AU and the university for helping us put this event on this evening.

Our thanks must also go to Tony Rowe, OBE, Rob Baxter and Exeter Chiefs, for their continued support of the university programme.

Lastly, I must also thank all of the staff here at EURFC for their tireless dedication to helping us strive for excellence.

It’s my first season in the role and it’s fair to say that it’s been a quite remarkable one so far. I’ve been so impressed by how the squad have got behind what we want to achieve this season from the outset. Combining your studies with an elite-level programme is a challenge, but it is one that everyone involved in this squad has risen to.

Our last match here against Durham was a superb occasion and the noise from the stands was incredible.

There’s such a high standard in BUCS Super Rugby this season and you can’t afford to switch off for a second, as last Wednesday’s defeat to the same side proved.

We were disappointed to let that game slip through our fingers at the final moment, but I know that we will provide a big response this evening.

Cardiff are a strong side and are incredibly well coached by Alan Flowers and his team.

It was another tough match when we made the visit to the Welsh capital earlier in the season and it’s set to be that again this evening.

There are no easy games in this league, so it’s crucial that we put in a performance we are proud of tonight.

Neither club has faced the other before and there is set to be a sense of intrigue around how this one plays out. Today’s visitors have already faced university opposition in Loughborough in recent weeks, so they will have some idea as to what to expect this afternoon.

With BUCS Super Rugby returning on Wednesday, the strength in depth that EURFC have will be tested from here on in. There’s a national title to defend in the university game, but also momentum to be held in the national leagues.

The emphasis today will be on seeing a number of new players step up and show that they can more than match the requirements in an Exeter University shirt. If the club is to have the success that has been set as a target this year, it will be a whole group effort, with a large number of players needing to step up to the plate.

Attention today though, is simply on putting in a performance against a side that will look to challenge right from the off. EURFC will be intent on going four from four at the start of the season, but they won’t be able to rest on their laurels.

It fills me with great enthusiasm to greet you all and share in the excitement of what is set to be another remarkable university rugby match here at Sandy Park.

I’m genuinely delighted to see you all in attendance, contributing to another superb crowd, as we give our talented athletes and extra boost this evening.

Building on from last season’s BUCS Super Rugby National Final victory at StoneX Stadium, the side have gone to another level this season, sitting at the top of the table with just a few rounds of the season to go.

It is essential that we recognise that an event of this magnitude wouldn’t be possible without the tireless efforts of our students and staff behind the scenes, all of whom share an immense pride at being part of our Exeter Sporting family.

I want to express my gratitude to all involved,

Especially the devoted Student Sport team, the rugby staff and committee members who work tirelessly to make sure that our student sport experience is both fulfilling and enjoyable.

SCENE SETTER

RUGBY RETURNS TO TOPSHAM IT’S BEEN ANOTHER THRILLING SEASON AT HSV, AND YOUR SUPPORT HAS MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE! It’s quite incredible to think about how much growth there has been this season, both on and off the court at HSV.

Our all-new fan zone has proven to be a huge hit and our Mavericks squad have loved seeing the smiles on faces before our fixtures.

From being the first NSL side to play against the England Thorns, to three consecutive sellout fixtures, there have been so many amazing moments throughout the campaign.

Our amazing groups have also been a huge part of the atmosphere at HSV this season. They’ve cheered, screamed and done everything in their power to support our Mavericks.

Having lost the first game of the season against Severn Stars, it was only right that a first league win of the campaign should come at home in front of our amazing fans.

Earlier this month, HSV hosted our Pride themed fixture against Loughborough, where a huge amount was raised for Stonewall. As ever, this wouldn’t have been possible without your support.

The victory against Leeds Rhinos was a huge early marker for the group and the development from that point to where we find ourselves today has been massive. With a new coach and several new faces, this was always going to be a year of development.

Only 94 days have passed since that first fixture against Rhinos, but it’s fair to say that a lot has happened since. Bring on the 2024 season. We’re already counting down the days.

BUCS SUPER RUGBY – THE SEASON SO FAR

BUCS SUPER RUGBY

The 2023/24 BUCS Super Rugby season has proven to have been a remarkable and nail-biting display of rugby so far. The Exeter 1st XV remain at the top of the table, with Hartpury behind in second place.

Exeter kicked off the campaign with a fixture on home soil against Hartpury and the boys were victorious, with a tense score of 36-33.

Jack Forsythe’s BUCS debut was one to remember with a try on his first appearance.

The week after saw the team make the trip to Nottingham to face the newly promoted side at Highfields. With the sun cutting through the bite in the temperature, the Exeter side were ready to show up. Joe Vajner was a stand out player with a tally of three tries off the maul. Exeter’s attack was prominent on the day and they returned to Devon with the victory.

There was no rest for the wicked, as round 3 welcomed rivals Loughborough to Topsham playing fields. The clash was a high-scoring encounter for the hosts as they accumulated nine tries, and with a final score of 57-26, Exeter had three consecutive wins. The following week saw Exeter make their first trip to Wales, where they faced Swansea in a hostile St Helen’s.

Torrential rain delayed the awaited kick-off, but both sides prevailed through the conditions. Exeter came away with the win, with Charlie McCaig’s 100% kick success rate.

A first Sandy Park fixture of the season saw EURFC edge Durham 24-15 in a titanic tussle.

With the boys in green on a winning streak, the stakes were still high as the next few round presented them with continued tough fixtures. However, home and away the side remained diligent in their play as they secured 4 more wins against Cardiff, Cardiff Met, Bath and Leeds Beckett.

A trip to Hartpury cut Exeter’s winning streak short, as Exeter’s lack of discipline prevailed. The fierce battle saw the opposition take the reins on the game, despite an even half time score. The hosts of Hartpury came away with the well-deserved win, with a score of 31-17.

And with a snap of the fingers, Exeter started again, with the second round of fixtures where they hosted Nottingham at home. The Christmas Cracker on the crumb was certainly explosive, in a high scoring affair in which Exeter hit 50 points to 24.

With the Christmas break over, the boys returned felling well-rested and eager to hit the ground running. A tough fixture away at Loughborough proved challenging for the side, with the supporters in full force.

Nevertheless, the boys rose to the occasion and came away with the narrow 20-27 win.

A home fixture the following week against Swansea showcased the talent of the side as they secured a consecutive win.

A long trip to Durham for Round 14 of the league proved difficult for the side and despite their continued grit and determination, Durham edged the win in the final moments of the game.

TONIGHT IS A HUGE OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO SHOW UP FOR THE CROWD.

THE BIG CHAT

If you’re looking for a player who could be described as instrumental, you’d most likely end up picking out Chester Ribbons’ name from any list you get given.

The centre has been crucial again for his side this season, as he has built himself into one of the first names on the team sheet.

Abrasive, physical in contact and with a deft turn of pace, Ribbons has already had opportunities to shine in an Exeter Chiefs shirt, including in Saturday’s friendly against Scarlets. Ribbons is the first to admit that he wants to achieve higher honours postuniversity and explained that Saturday’s match was a great opportunity to state his claim.

“Saturday’s game was really enjoyable. To play at Sandy park in front of the Chiefs fans was amazing. For me, it was a great chance to get some exposure at the next level and I hope to get more opportunities in the future.”

Ribbons has already seen the likes of Will Becconsall, Tom Cairns, Ben Hammersley and Zack Wimbush make the seamless transition from BUCS Super Rugby to Gallagher Premiership and Investec Champions Cup mainstays, whilst Ross Vintcent made his international debut for Italy last weekend.

Dafydd Jenkins, still a third-year student, is the Chiefs and Wales captain, as EURFC continues to supply a huge pipeline of elite talent into the professional game.

To say it has been an impressive campaign for EURFC this season would be putting it mildly. After three second-place finishes in the league in a row, the squad are hellbent on securing a first league title since 2019 this year, as well as a third straight BUCS Super Rugby National Final victory.

Ribbons has enjoyed his time leading from the front as something of an elder statesmen, admitting that he’s been impressed with how the younger members of the squad have stepped up.

“We’ve had a great campaign so far and the boys are very motivated to achieve our goals we set out in preseason. It’s my third year representing EURFC, and I’ve loved playing with the boys this season. I’ve been impressed with the younger boys in the team, raising the standards especially with the amount of first year boys in the squad.”

Last week, EURFC suffered just their second league defeat, as Durham scored in the final play to edge a high-scoring thriller. There have been plenty of close matches this season, with EURFC having enough strength in depth to pull out a victory.

With the crowd behind them though, Ribbons has no doubt that his side can find the perfect response again this evening.

“We’ve had a couple of bumps in the road, especially last week’s loss at Durham.

Tonight is a huge opportunity for us to show up at Sandy Park, with the crowd behind us and get the win.”

12 “I still can’t believe that this will be my last home match I ever play for Saracens Mavericks. It’s hard to imagine how it will feel but I know it will be an emotional one.”

The love and outpouring of gratitude for what Corbin has done for the game has been immense since Friday’s announcement and, for former teammate and now Head Coach Camilla Buchanan, she feels that it has been an honour to have known Corbin.

“For as long as I’ve known Sasha, netball has been her driving force. For us at Mavericks and for the sport, it’s a sad time to be saying goodbye to someone who has been the face of the game for as long as I can remember.

Playing alongside each other, to now having the privilege of coaching Sasha; it has been an absolute honour. She’s been a fantastic leader and her amazing energy is always able to lift the group. She is an incredible human on and off the court and I wish her all the best.”

Ever the professional, Corbin still has her eyes firmly fixed on the final three matches of the season, as Mavericks look to try and secure a fifth-place finish. She is though, also excited to see what the future looks like for the club.

“We still have three games left to try and finish our season strongly. Whilst I know my career is coming to an end I’m still very focused on performing well in these games alongside my team. This team has been building and growing each game and I’m excited for Saracens’ future.”

As for what is next for Corbin, that is completely up to her. The world really is her oyster and knowing her as a person, one would suspect that whatever she turns her hand to, she will thrive in.

The thoughts of Buchanan have been echoed

by Saracens Group CEO Lucy Wray too, who praised Corbin’s infectious attitude.

“Where do you start summing up the career of Sasha Corbin! What an electric player to watch but also an electric personality. The beaming smile and infectious positive energy that she exudes. It has been an unbelievable pleasure to get to know her and watch her play over the past few seasons since Saracens got involved with the Mavericks team. I know Sasha has an incredible bond with the club that goes back many years.”

One of those roles will no doubt be chief cheerleader for her club on the side line.

Corbin laughed and paused, as she made the point that she will always keep a keen eye on how her soon to be former club are doing.

“I’m Saracens Mavericks through and through. I might not be on the court moving forward, but I’ll definitely still be their biggest fan.”

We’ve run these Sandy Park events for a long time, but the noise around the WA/ C stadium back in February is something none of us will ever forget.

This season has been an interesting one to say the least. After two disappointing matches to start the season for the men’s team, we have been delighted with how they have responded in the last few weeks.

It would be remiss of me to not mention the tireless effort and hours of work that go into putting on an event like this. Our thanks go to Tony Rowe OBE and all at Exeter Chiefs for making this event possible. For the women’s team as well, it’s been a hugely encouraging start to life back in the BUCS National League. A bonus-point away at Cardiff Met was followed by a fantastic victory away against Loughborough, setting the side up well for a first hit out at home today against Durham.

ALL TO PLAY FOR IN NAT 2 WEST

OFF THE BACK OF A SOLID FIRST SEASON IN THE 4TH TIER OF ENGLISH RUGBY, EXETER UNIVERSITY HAVE REALLY KICKED ON IN NATIONAL LEAGUE 2 WEST. Along with balancing their BUCS Super Rugby title hopes the boys in green have been on fire and find themselves in an unlikely promotion battle halfway through the season.

It all started back in September as a new look side beat Chester on the opening day, starting what would be a fantastic start to the season.

Big wins against Hornets, Hinckley and Dudley followed as all the opening 5 games turned into victories. Top of the table with 24 out of a possible 25 points was the perfect way to start the new season.

A unique problem we face is having to fight on 2 fronts, and this started to play a part as momentum began to garner in October.

A tough defeat against high flying Luctonians bought to an end the winning streak, and when this was followed up by 3 defeats in

the next 5, and it started to look as if Exeter Uni would sink back down to mid-table.

However, despite the slight downturn in form, the boys continued to keep themselves involved in the title fight, picking up wins where they could. A win against rivals Loughborough at Millfield School, and a lastminute penalty by Ben Coen to steal the win away at Newport (Salop), meant momentum never dipped too much.

Approaching the Christmas break, some teams began to struggle to form as they looked ahead to the festive period. However, with plenty of big games coming up Exeter had no choice but continue to push on.

They were unlucky in defeat against Dings Crusaders and Camborne, before turning things round with wins over Clifton and Hornets. A good end to what had been a successful 2023 for the Sat XV.

When we finally returned to action in midJanuary, it was a tough first match up at home against Hinckley. A side we had many tight battles with last season and this one was different. Despite a good performance and some stand-out moments, a late try for the visitors was enough to come away with victory.

This week, the Saturday League team host Bournville who are sitting 3rd from the bottom. The side will be eager to display their best game of rugby on home soil.

After conceding late the week before, Milo Hallam would snatch victory in the final minute the following week as Exeter got back on track with a win over Old Redcliffians. A Billy Kucera hat-trick secured victory the following week over Dudley, to maintain Exeter’s firm position inside the top 4.

With the likes of the Loughborough Students still to face, there are sure to be university bragging rights on the line, outside of BUCS Super Rugby.

Last weekend, Exeter Uni made the trip to current pace setters Luctonians, needing to show a good account of themselves with plenty of quality opposition around them.

Despite a good start and leading at the break, the league leaders showed their quality in the second half coming away narrow winners.

Despite some patchy form for much of the season, the boys in green currently sit 4th just one point off 3rd. With still plenty of time left, the boys won’t stop hunting done those above them until the end of the season.

The next few rounds of fixtures are key for the squad’s development to keep on climbing up the table.

The team will be eager to welcome back Kane James into the mix, as he returns from the England U20s Six Nations campaign as well. James has been outstanding this season and has carried that form over into the U20s setup.

Games against Redruth, Newport (Salop) and Dings Crusaders follow, in what are sure to be tough outings, with further matches against Camborne and Clifton, before the side round out the campaign with Chester making the trip to Topsham.

There are some big matches ahead and with plenty of rugby still to be played between now and the end of the season, it’s all to play for for EURFC in National 2 West.
