Greetings fellow members of the beef industry!

Welcome to the Red Oak ‘Genetics Time’ sale offering and catalogue for 2024!

It has been an interesting 12 months in the beef industry. Fortunately we are now breaking out of the significant ‘mis-pricing’ event that influenced Australian beef markets throughout 2023. We were certainly perplexed in mid-2023 when Australian pricing was getting crushed while our US and Canadian colleagues were receiving all-time record high farm gate prices. Thankfully we have seen a very positive shift in Australian beef pricing over the last few weeks… together with a very positive outlook for the future!

We are very pleased to bring this genetic offering to our fellow Australian beef producers. In this Red Oak ‘Genetics Time’ sale we offer the opportunity for you to participate in and multiply from 19 outstanding animals in the Limousin breed. These animals… including 4 donor females and 15 semen sires… stand up very favourably as individuals on their own strengths. Collectively… they represent a genetic portfolio that is at as good as it gets! This sale line-up presents a set of genetic opportunities that, we believe, are as good, as diverse, and as deep as you will find in purebred Limousin genetics globally.

Every species and breed requires genetic diversity and pedigree freshness to thrive and achieve progress over time. Our challenge and mission is to source and offer animals that assist with achieving genetic diversity… whilst maintaining a phenotype and data profile that suits Australian production systems and conditions.

We seek to identify and multiply from Limousin genetics with a balance and combination of the following key traits:

 Strong footed

 Wide muzzled

 Moderate birthweight

 Easy to work with

 Ability to perform and finish off grass

 Moderate, thick, and soft made phenotype

 Good uddered

 Excellent maternal strength

 Large scrotal size

 Favourable carcase and eating quality

Collectively there is strong alignment between these traits and the genetic opportunities presented in this sale. Multi-trait selection requires continuous balancing and adjustment over time as we seek to blend animals with complementary traits. This is the art and science of breeding!

We look back favourably on our 37 plus years of involvement in the Limousin breed and the genetic progress that has been made! The genetic progress that we have made around moderating birth weight, increasing fertility and scrotal size, enhancing finishing ability, genetic docility, and maternal strength is remarkable. This has been achieved whilst multiplying the polled and homozygous polled traits. It is a trajectory of genetic progress that we can all feel very proud of as custodians of the Limousin breed in Australia.

The production segment that continues to excite us the most in the beef industry is the opportunity to directly convert pasture to a quality product. The economics of achieving as many of our production goals as we can from a grass based diet are well proven. This has underpinned our selection of genetics which offer finishing ability and softness to compliment the natural muscle shape and red meat yield of the Limousin breed. Limousin infused genetics are very good at pushing down the scale and converting available grass to additional kilograms of red meat.

2

We continue to be excited by the positive impact that the Limousin breed offers around enhancing the efficiency of red meat production. This can be achieved though adding hybrid vigour, growth rate, and red meat yield when used as a terminal sire… or by adding longevity, fertility, and resilience when applied in maternal settings.

In presenting the Red Oak ‘Genetics Time’ sale for 2024 we knew that we would need to continue the tradition of digging deep and providing many genetic feature lots. There are a number of unique opportunities presented within this sale catalogue. These opportunities include:

 3 straws from our private stocks of Balamore Gryphon

 Embryos from Balamore Freda

 Embryos from an excellent selection of our Australian donors

 Our last 50 straws of B-Bar Carhartt semen…that we reserved for this sale

 The opportunity to procure semen from three Homo Polled and Homo Black semen sires

 Cottage Lake Big Star

 TREF Kansas

 Cole Genius 34G

 The opportunity to purchase from the only 125 straws of Oakwood Cutright semen to be offered and released for use in Australia in 2024 (outside of the partners on the bull)

 The only release of New Life Henry semen in Australia for 2024

 Plus many more!

We have designed the semen lots to allow flexibility for you to put together a collection of semen sires that meet your current and future breeding needs and requirements. Most semen lots are being offered in manageable packages of 6, 10, 12, 15, or 20 straws to optimise flexibility. There are 10 semen lots per sire for most of the bulls being offered to make the tracking of lots easier on Auctions Plus.

Breeding Limousin cattle and being involved in the beef industry has certainly enriched our lives. We are incredibly thankful and grateful for the support, friendships, and sources of knowledge we have developed in the Limousin breed…thank you all so much!

Please note that we have shortened up the sale…this year the auction will run for just 30 minutes before the timer kicks in and the clock starts counting down.

We were blown away by the support received in our 2023 Red Oak ‘Genetics Time’ sale last March and throughout the year. We have a deep sense of gratitude for every enquiry…and for your on-going custom in support of our boutique program… thank you all!

Kindest Regards

The availability of these three straws from our private stocks has only been made possible as a result of discovering a handful of straws at our ET centre that we didn’t know we had. Perfectly suited for ET to hopefully multiply the influence! Short gestation length, moderate birth weight, large EMA, and retail beef yield all well within the Top 10% of the breed. COMMENT: 5 lots of 10 straws each. We couldn’t help but be drawn to the video of B-Bar Carhartt as a yearling as he moved through the snow with so much presence about him. We felt that his capacity and proud look would take him places...but we still underestimated how well he would grow out into such a heavily muscled beast! We have heard very favourable reports on his first calves and he has an incredible EBV profile. We are glad that we put these 50 straws aside for a rainy day. A true beef bull...with all of the characteristics required to add value and red meat yield to our impressive industry! Top 1% of the breed for calving ease, Top 2% for short gestation length, and Top 1% for low birth weight result in a VERY impressive set of calving ease credentials. Lot 60 to Lot 79 - TREF Kansas (Homo Polled & Homo Black) (AA)

COMMENT: We searched deep and wide for the next Homo Polled, Homo Black, and AA sire prospect to add to our line-up. We were very pleased to find TREF Kansas 1607K and we followed him through from a young calf onwards. We were attracted to his early to mid maturity pattern, his disposition as demonstrated in the video links above, and his freedom of movement. TREF Kansas also has a balanced EPD profile within NALF and is in the Top 1% of the breed for stayability and the Top 15% for scrotal size. It is increasingly challenging to procure Homo Polled and Homo Black sire prospects that are both true purebreds and meet our key selection criteria. We are very pleased to have been able to bring TREF Kansas to Australia for your consideration and appraisal. We feel the photo of him above as a calf and the amateur video footage of him speak to his fit for Australian conditions. A solid trifecta of muscle shape, softness, and impressive early growth!

COMMENT: Homo Polled and Homo Black. We are so pleased to have been able to introduce the awesome Cole Beauty 276Z cow family to the Australian herd book as the dam of Cole Genius 34G. We were also drawn to Cole Genius 34G based on his depth of body, large scrotal size, and breed leading growth EPD’s. Homo Polled and Homo Black genetics are in strong demand and limited supply. Cole Genius 34G provides an opportunity to breed some...and carry forward his phenotypically outstanding donor dam that also happens to be in the Top 1% of the breed in the US for IMF. Cole Beauty 276Z is one of the leading donors in the Limousin breed in the USA with 94 progeny recorded. Now deceased, she has left an impressive legacy, and Cole Genius 34G is one of her few true purebred progeny that can carry forward her breeding magic. A performance bull with some incredible cow power behind him. Very favourable reports on progeny so far...stout!

COMMENT: We have been super impressed with how Flemington Ready to Roll R20 has bred for us. They are performance cattle! His progeny to date have been long made, smooth shouldered, and heavily muscled. His first calf crop here has impressed us and visitors alike. Well worth a look at his EBV graph too...Top 1% for short gestation length, all growth traits, scrotal size, carcase weight, and EMA! Top 2% for positive fat cover to go along with his massive EMA. R20’s most impressive feature however may be his foot structure and integrity. He stands on a big, square foot with lots of depth of heel. Well inside the Top 1% for Northern Export Index. He is currently in the Top 1% of the breed for 8 traits and all four $ indexes. A bull with substance in spades!

COMMENT: RPY Gibson’s Shade is the result of the very successful RPY Paynes Tank x HSF Zena flush that produced multiple herd sires and some impressive females. RPY Gibson’s Shade is a walking sire at JYF Limousins, while his full ET brother RPY Gibson’s Deadshot is a walking sire at B-Bar Cattle. They are both long made, clean fronted, and big scrotalled herd sires. They also offer breed leading IMF. We love the combination of length, performance, and finishing ability that RPY Gibson’s Shade offers. Volume, softness, and big scrotal! Great to see the development and progress of RPY Gibsons Shade in his mature photo above.

COMMENT: A unique opportunity to secure some semen from Morrisvale Lumberjack purchased in partnership with the Raven and Maryvale herds. Few bulls can claim the title of siring progeny in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa. Morrisvale Lumberjack is one of them! He has sired some very impressive daughters in the Balamore Limousin herd in Canada as shown by the catalogue photo below. He is also an 8 time trait leader in Australia for positive calving ease, short gestation length, moderate birth weight, 200, and 400 day growth, carcase weight, EMA, and retail beef yield. Data rich with a proven breeding track record. An amazing EBV spread! Morrisvale Lumberjack is in the Top 1% of the breed for calving ease direct, carcase weight, EMA, and retail beef yield.

COMMENT: RPY Paynes Tank is an impressive, heavily muscled, high red meat yielding sire! His EBV profile is also impressive with short gestation length, moderate birth weight, strong growth, large scrotal size, breed leading milk, breed leading IMF, and big docility at +68 in the January 2024 Breedplan run. We were impressed with RPY Paynes Tank and his 9 ET siblings when we inspected them out on grass in August 2019. His 8 ET sisters were particularly impressive and consistent! RPY Paynes Tank has EBV’s within the Top 5% of the breed for 200 day growth, milk, scrotal size, and docility. Short gestation length, strong early growth, and large scrotal size. Boom!

COMMENT: Greenwood Shift is Homo Polled, AA, and loaded with maternal cow power. We selected Greenwood Shift based on the strength of his ET sisters. They are impressive and big hipped females...and we anticipate that we will see quite a bit of them in the years ahead as they move into production! They remind us in type (not pedigree) of the maternal cow power behind TMF Westwood...and TMF Westwood’s dam 902P and grand dam 602L in particular. We know from how TMF Westwood has performed how well such big hipped, roomy, big capacity cows can breed on! Shift’s dam Greenwood Pld Ally is an incredible beef female and an Agribition Beef Supreme champion.
