विद्या सर्वज्ञ गौरव:

WHY PETRICHOR ? Petrichor is the pleasant smell that accompanies the first rain after a long period of warm, dry weather. This heady smell of oncoming wet weather is something most Indians would be familiar with. This memory-searing scent that accompanies our monsoons shapes everything from our childhood to our culture to our literature. The ethereal perfume of soil when the soft rush of sparkling beads from the heavens embraces the earth after a long spell of separation, has been represented more as an emotion than as a scent. Songs have been sung and poems have been written about this scent of life itself. It was not until 1964 that a name was devised to describe this piquant perfume. The Australian mineralogists Isabel Joy Bear and Richard Grenfell Thomas published a paper in the journal Nature that proposed a name for this scent. They blended the Greek words “petra” meaning stone and “ichor” meaning blood of the gods and christened this smell as petrichor. Although the English naming is attributed to the scientist duo, the scientists acknowledged that they were not the first to identify this earthy smell. They were not even the first to extract it. In fact, what they had named petrichor was already a signature fragrance described and captured in small perfumeries of India. Extracted from parched clay and distilled with ancient techniques, it is known as mitti ka attar or Earth’s perfume. We named the annual newsletter of Indian Institute of Information Technology Una, Petrichor, because much like its namesake, it will arrive in the season of monsoon every year. Much like the first onset of rain marks the end of a Summer and the start of Monsoon, Petrichor heralds the end of an academic year and the beginning of another. It is a curated record, capsulizing the milestones of a year. It is a waft of the sweet scent of nostalgia signifying a satisfying end and hopes for a beautiful beginning.

DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE Indian Institute of Information Technology Una is proud to present the first edition of our brand-new newsletter— Petrichor, Volume 1. Our annual newsletter will give you an insight into the various events and activities conducted, achievements of students and faculty, and the progress of the Institute as a whole. This is an endeavour to foster professional and social networking, establish a thread of communication with our alumni, and leave a record of the milestones crossed every year. We have been together in this pandemic for more than a year now. Today, the light at the end of the tunnel might be in sight. As I look back at a very successful although online academic year, I cannot help but beam with pride at everything we have accomplished. There have been many highlights in the academic year 20-21. We were amongst the first ones to successfully organize a Virtual Convocation. We have organised two Faculty Development Programmes, various inhouse competitions, extra-curricular activities such as Fit India Movement, Vigilance Week, Drug Awareness talks, to name but a few. Experts from reputed institutes and organizations in India and abroad delivered talks on wide-ranging topics and brought fresh insights into numerous fields of learning. We have initiatives like YourDOST.com working closely with our students providing online counselling service. The platform facilitates consultation with expert counsellors in an anonymous mechanism, 24x7, 365 days. We have also seen the launch of our Institute Intellectual Property Rights Cell (IIPRC) that aims to encourage students to develop innovative and intellectual work leading to the development of new and useful materials, devices, processes having commercial value. Students have exhibited a great zeal and enthusiasm despite being restricted to remote access. They have contributed significantly to activities like Seminars, Workshops, Conferences, Placement programs, Technical and Cultural events etc. This newsletter is a testament to all of these and more. We appreciate the confidence our Board of Governors, parents and students have placed in us and in our work. We will strive to become better each day and look forward to working with you in 2021-22.
