M P a v ilion in Que e n Vi ctori a Ga rde n Digital Design - ARCH20004 Second Year Semester 1 Han Li ; han.li1@unimelb.edu.au Individual work With gradual spiraling motion into the landscape, Winding Around allows the audience to meander around and into the sunken performance space. Perforated structure of the pavilion visually reveals and hides the performance as the audience are winded around by the quartet musical performance.

DESIGN BRIEF: Within 5×5×5m constraint, the temporary pavilion requires to: - Provide undercover for 15 guests + 1 speaker - Allow 30 audiences to engage with a quartet performance - Have a relationship with the ground.

All the while the pavilion must be generated by a parametric software.

Wanting to form a relationship with the ground and the pavilion, the properties of the Möbius strip inspired me in the concept design stage. Although the single strip was eventually broken, the equation was utilised to create a gradual spiraling motion that pulls the audience towards the performance space

Triangulated structure forms the shape. It acts as shading element, while providing visual porosity as one meander around the pavilion

The idea of dynamic visual porosity was developed in the studio tasks where 3-dimensional panel was fabricated onto a waffle structure. With controlled porosity Light and Shadow works to draw attention to its form.

Through the exploration of the theories of the field conditions, Voronoi patterns were generated and controlled to develop the proposed estate into a field of buildings. Meanwhile the in-between spaces also establish a pattern of gardens and outdoor spaces which support spatial organisation of the field.

Topographical Layout

Analysing the wind conditions of the site, the field of residential pavilions are organised to buffer the northern winter winds.

Meanwhile the southern summer winds are chanelled over the water feature to be cooled.

The topography was manipulated to divide the site into three main zones: private residential, semi-private function, public pleasure garden.

The arrows on the diagram also represent the height of the buildings which corresponds to the topography of the site.

The terrain was manipulated so that all rainwater is to shed away from the building.

The topography leads rain water onto the water feature of the pleasure garden

The shared estate contains a wide range of mix uses; the pavilions are organised so that both public and private functions can occur simultaneously with out affecting the comfort or accessibility of the users in both scenarios.

From the main street on the south of the estate to the North, the gradual change of public to private use can be seen from the section drawings.

To accommodate family interaction, independence, and privacy, the relationship and connection between each space were carefully considered throughout the design process.

The pitched angle of the roof were echoed and extruded in the upper extension of the terrace, to draw connection and recognition of the existing heritage facade.

The courtyard is carefully integrated in the living space to allow natural daylight and greenery to enhance the calm and subtly elegant characteristic of Carlton.

The heritage terrace should Transform to meet their needs of contemporary living, whilst retaining its Edwardian character of the street frontage. The house will Extend the use of adjacent lane-way as a secondary access for bike storage, as well as wheelc access. Furthermore, it will accommodate for the maternal grandparents who wish to closer to the young family for the first ten years. It will then need to Adapt to the changing needs of the growing family for the following 20 years.

with four key terms provided, a public event was explored and imagined

Colourful lights and funky reflections.

Located at several official sites, the installation’s reflective and colourchanging properties heightens the public’s excitement for the rewarding big bang of the night.

At every angle, the translucent panels will provide multiple reflections of you and your surrounding environments in different angles and hues. As they see their own reflections, the visitors get a chance to reflect their personal journey of 2019 in a playful way.

With significant social housing population within the project’s catchment, demographics of the surrounding Carlton suburbs includes residents from diverse cultural backgrounds, with higher then population needing elderly care, disability and chronic illness support.

The project brief emphasise the importance of education and prevention to reduce the strains of other institutional health facilities. The institutional health centres are often found intimidating and inaccessible for many disadvantaged demographics who are targeted in the new proposal.

My design approach was to provide an easily approachable space for the public to gather, while simultaneously providing spaces to isolate

By incorporating gathering spaces, people can care and support each other as a community, promoting health and wellness. Meanwhile it is very important to provide spaces for isolation when one needs a private time and space.

By providing spaces to gather and isolate, each individual is in control of their privacy. This allows the health centre to become more approachable towards the vulnerable population needing further support, while mixing a wide range of demographics in the area.
