Get Ready and be prepared As we learnt last summer, we can be without power or cut off by ooded roads for long stretches of time. Overall, the Coast fared better than some other areas and we had no loss of life, but events provided a reminder yet again, that we need to be prepared. Check council’s website or ask at your local library or customer service centres for a Get Ready brochure.

Bold plan for a new economy The new Regional Economic Development Strategy 2013-2033 puts the region on track to attract new investment, provide local career options for our young people, raise average household income levels and help businesses and our communities prosper. To nd out more, view the strategy online.

Turn your clutter into cash Join the National Garage Sale Trail on 26 October. It’s Australia’s largest and most successful community based marketplace and involved more than 150,000 participants last year. It’s free to register, for more details visit council's website.

Nominate a local hero Nominations for the 2014 Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards are now open. If you know a person, community group or organisation worthy of recognition; nominate them now. For more information visit council’s website.

What’s happening around the Coast? Council’s online Community Hub connects you to local community groups, events and activities. It’s like a ‘yellow pages directory’ for local groups and the arts community that you can search by name, category or location. Visit community. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au to connect with community groups and events across the region.

Council meetings The children from Cooroy Community Kindergarten recently went on an excursion to visit the Noosa District State High School (NDSHS) farm and were hosted by the year 10 students. Farmer (teacher) John (above) explained to the curious kids where potato chips come from and the difference between good and bad insects. The high school runs a number of Agriculture strands as part of its curriculum. It has a menagerie of animals as well as fruit trees and vegetable beds on their farm behind the main school.
