Community forum a success

This magical image from photographer Liz Dick captures children entranced in play at the recent Noosa Pengari Steiner School festival. The moment caught here is open to multiple interpretations; what’s the boy on the left doing: is he conducting an orchestra? How about the lad in the middle: is he simply attempting to balance the orange, or has something caught his eye? And what’s captured the attention of the steadfast boy stage right? Thank you Liz for the stunning photos we’ve used in this issue. Send high resolution jpg files to editor@eumundigreen.com.au by our next deadline, noon Thursday 14 June. Your photograph may be chosen for publication in Eumundi Green. Accreditation will be given to all photographers.

Keep Smiling

F. Scott Fitzgerald provided his daughter Scottie with a list of 21 rules to live by. Here’s a sample of the legendary author’s paternal wisdom: Don’t worry about the past. Don’t worry about the future. Don’t worry about growing up. Don’t worry about disappointments. Don’t worry about anyone getting ahead of you. Don’t worry about triumph. Don’t worry about dolls. Don’t worry about failure unless it comes through your own fault. Don’t worry about flies, mosquitoes and insects in general. Worry about courage, cleanliness, efficiency and horsemanship.

ECCO directors thank community members for their interest in attending the recent forum and also the three speakers whose presentations at the Imperial Hotel were rated highly. Topics included a briefing on a short report on the first steps of a Master Plan for Eumundi by Andrew Hillhouse. Johanne Wright's short presentation was about the expected process the Boundary Commissioner will follow in the upcoming state government led consideration of de-amalgamation. The third topic was an introduction to the new national Workplace Health and Safety Act and implications for community organisations and their volunteers to consider. ECCO proposes running follow up workshops on the new Workplace Health and Safety Act to assist community organisations and small business operators in August.

Modernising ECCO's constitution In the next ECCO column will be an invitation for members of Eumundi & District Community Assn, Eumundi and District Historical Assn and Eumundi Chamber of Commerce to a workshop to review the constitution drawn by the three member organisations to establish ECCO and the inter-party agreement that enabled the formation and spelt out ongoing roles. Members are asked to provide advice and comments through their organisation.

Did you know? T

he Transit of Venus on 6 June marked just the seventh time our sister planet has been recorded passing in a direct line between the Sun and us. Of course, with Earth being the third rock from the giant miasma of incandescent plasma, Mercury and Venus are the only planets that transit. Mercury’s small apparent size makes its cross-solar voyages something of a non-event. But Venus transits have attracted great scientific interest since the initial observation in 1639, especially when astronomers realised careful records could help calculate the precise scale of the Solar System. Captain James Cook was sent to Tahiti to observe the 1769 transit, after which the Endeavour sailed southward and collided with Great Barrier Reef (among other things). If you missed it, better keep yourself in good nick: the next transit’s scheduled for 11 December 2117.
