Dear Readers The summer has absolutely whizzed by, taken up in large part by the wonders of the Olympics and then the Paralympics - what a great show we made of it and I think we all ought to be pretty proud. Even if you are not a great sports fan you couldn’t fail but be impressed with the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and the bravery and endeavour of the athletes taking part. It seems strange to be talking already about things to do at Christmas but with the nights starting to draw in and autumn well on its way, I guess we should. We have two Pantomimes well worth booking this year, Aladdin at the Yvonne Arnaud in Guildford and Dick Whittington at the New Victoria Theatre in Woking. I must say a huge thank you for supporting the Woking & Sam Beare shop in East Horsley - they are a charity close to my heart at the moment and they really do appreciate your help in raising much needed funds. Having a turnout at home is always good for the soul so please keep your visits coming. For the Editor’s column I have, as I’d promised, put pen to paper with a “Cri de Coeur” for any decent British Gentlemen left in this country (there must be some) read all about it on Page 15. For my next edition I shall be looking at the world of celebrity in all its glory. It’s jackets and wellies time so get out there folks and enjoy the wonderful Autumn. Don’t forget though to send me through your new events for the Dec/Jan edition. Diana Isherwood Stone editor@thehorsleydirectory.co.uk www.thehorsleydirectory.co.uk

Outstanding Property Management from APW “We’re often asked ‘what are the secrets to APW’s success?’ and we are always pleased to advise prospective clients that one of the key ingredients to our multi-award winning status is our outstanding property management service”, said Natasha Howard Associate Director APW Cobham. “We relish the responsibility of maintaining the properties under our care and our response levels to putting things right if they go wrong are second to none. Unlike many other agents, our property management staff are located within our offices and they are dedicated professionals trained to handle any issues as quickly and effectively as possible. Here are a few recent messages we have received from our clients:”

neither would my last tenant. Having used APW for many years I'd prefer all communication to go through you. You are very responsive as an organisation.” KA Landlord

“Thank you for your prompt attention. I am delighted that APW were able to help me in an emergency while I was away on holiday.” GR Landlord

Tracy Wright, Property Manager for both APW Cobham & Esher Branches commented, “We are the first point of contact for in-going Tenants to any APW Managed properties and we work to ensure that the properties are maintained to the highest standards, dealing with any issues that might arise during a tenancy quickly and as seamlessly as possible. Outside of office hours we have an Emergency Service so no matter what situation arises, at whatever time of day or night, including Christmas Day, APW will not let you down. We also provide a vacant property management service as well. Our Landlords know that their properties are in the safest of hands and we believe that this is the reason why we retain 99% of our landlords with managed properties on an annual basis.”

“APW is always on top of things, responds almost immediately to any issues that we may have, and is excellent about getting people out to fix things.” DW Tenant

If you’re thinking of letting your property please contact the team at APW Cobham. They let and manage many properties in the Horsley area and would welcome assisting you with your enquiry.

“Thanks for your speedy response. The last managing agents were absolutely useless from start to finish. I would never use them again,

Inventions -

Microwave Ovens Like many important inventions, the microwave oven was a by-product of another technology. During the research and development of aircraft detecting Radar projects in the 1930’s, the amazing properties of microwaves were identified. Working on the Radar project with the Raytheon Corporation, American Marvin Bock stood in front of a prototype scanner dish and was amazed to find that a chocolate bar in his pocket completely melted in seconds. Intrigued, Marvin began years of private experimentation at home, building a huge microwave machine and attempting to cook hotdogs. Unfortunately for Marvin, a senior scientist on the Radar project, Dr Percy Spencer, began experimenting himself, first with popcorn and then eggs. Spencer continued experimenting, building a metal box into which he fed microwave power. The energy was unable to escape through metal, thereby creating

8

or

a higher density electromagnetic field. When food was placed inside, the microwaves caused the water molecules in the item to vibrate and become heated. Engineers quickly went to work on developing and refining Spencer’s prototype. In October 1946 the Raytheon Corp filed a patent proposing microwaves be used to cook food. In 1947 the first commercial microwave oven entered the market. The initial units were enormous, standing 5½ft. tall, weighing 750lbs and costing $5000 each. The magnetron tube had to be water-cooled, so an extensive plumbing installation was also required. Constant improvements and refinements soon produced a reliable lightweight oven that was air-cooled and much less expensive. By 1975 the sales of microwave ovens exceeded the sales of gas cookers. Style, size, shape, colour and price are now tailored to fit any family kitchen. In less than 70 years an accidental discovery has become a global phenomenon.

The Woking Hospice shop in East Horsley has just celebrated its 1 year anniversary, and has received outstanding support from the local community over the past 12 months. “We’re really grateful that people have been so generous with their donations,” explains shop manager Mary Richardson, who also wants to thank her customers as well as volunteer team for making it all possible. We would also like to thank The Horsley Directory who have helped us by providing free advertising throughout the year to raise awareness.” The shop has proved popular and been very well received, and this is in no small part due to the volunteers who have donated their valuable time and expertise to us,” says Mary. The shop provides vital funding for Woking Hospice, which cares for patients and their families in the local community. Mary explains: “As our shop is right on the edge of the hospice catchment area, a lot of people don’t realise that community nurses visit patients in this area and that Woking Hospice is their local hospice. There are several ways to help support Woking Hospice and its shops. You can have a pre-Christmas clear out and bring your unwanted goods in for other people to enjoy, or you can donate your time and become a much needed and appreciated shop volunteer. Either way, do pop into the shop and have a chat with Mary about it. You can also show your support by buying the new Hospice Christmas cards which are on sale in the shop now. You can choose between traditional or contemporary designs, but no matter which you buy, you can be sure that your purchase offers vital funding to the hospice and its services.

Whatever happened to the

“Quintessential English Gentleman”? In my last magazine I lamented the passing of the “British Gentleman” and I continue to be sad that the era which seemed to spawn them has all but disappeared, or am I mistaken and are there still in this green and pleasant land undiscovered gentlemen, so secretly hidden from view they become like some lesser spotted species!

Images with Creative Commons Licences

I’m talking here about the type of man personified by a reticence of judgement of others, that desire not to offend, that essence of politeness towards others and that stalwart quality of British fairness and integrity. The type of qualities that were probably shown to perfection when our British backs were against the wall. Various characters come to mind when I think of this kind of man and one of my favourites remains the actor Kenneth Moore with his portrayal of British bravery in the face of appalling adversity epitomised in the film ‘Reach for the Sky’, ‘Genevieve’, ‘North West Frontier’ and also ‘The Admiral Crichton’, in which film the latent snobbery of the ruling classes was ridiculed to perfection and the so-called ’gentleman’ was actually the manservant who saved them all from themselves when shipwrecked on a desert island. The word ‘decent’ comes to mind. Why do we never hear this word now - it has simply gone out of fashion along with the word ‘integrity’ something apparently that is now slightly sneered at in the corridors of power, as we all know to our recent cost. Some others that also epitomise the qualities I am longing once again to see are those portrayed by actors such as Richard Attenborough, Trevor Howard, Sir Lawrence Olivier, James Stewart, Gregory Peck (and yes I know these two are American but they have sneaked into the list) and perhaps Patrick Macnee (The Avengers). Of course other traits are sometimes connected to those English Gentlemen, after all no-one is perfect, so a certain caddishness, superiority and flakiness can also be attributed. Whilst understanding this I guess what I really admire is that firmness of character, that willingness to get everything done properly in the correct way and that very British un-showiness that is sadly so incredibly lacking in everyday life now. So what’s wrong with conforming to basic moral standards? Is there someone out there, perhaps living without the knowledge of who and what they really are, who can compare with those heroes of the past Ah! Yes, I believe there is. The inestimable and unmatched Michael Kitchen as DCS Foyle in Foyle’s War - still one of the very best English Gentlemen. © Diana Isherwood Stone

Discover the Canal du Midi in the South of France

In 1996, the Canal du Midi became the first canal in the world to receive World Heritage status, as one of the ‘greatest engineering feats of modern times’ and ‘outstanding landscape fashioned by man’. Designed to link the Atlantic to the Mediterranean across south west France, it had been planned since Roman times but work did not start until 1667, taking 14 years and 15,000 people to complete. Sadly, the engineer Pierre Paul Riquet passed away just months before the royal barge opened the first stretch in his native town of Béziers, in 1681. From Toulouse, where it joins the Canal de Garonne, to the vast Etang de Thau on the Mediterranean, the 245 km long waterway is dotted with over 300 supporting structures, including bridges, locks and canal aqueducts invented by Riquet to cross streams and rivers. The canal tunnel in Malpas was also a world’s first, completed in secret in just a week before the authorities had a chance to find out. They had refused permission on safety grounds. The tunnel remains one of the highlights along the route, rivalled only by Fonserannes, a steep staircase of seven locks and now a listed monument. For 200 years or so, the canal brought wealth to the region, encouraging agriculture, trade and

Canal du Midi

related business, from boat yards to inns. It was the cheapest way to transport people and goods since a single barge could carry the equivalent of 125 oxdriven carts. Having turned down the canal because of the cost, the town of Carcassonne soon realised its mistake and agreed eventually to finance a diversion. Inevitably, the advent of the railway brought commercial trade to an end but right across Languedoc, the Canal du Midi is alive and well, an integral part of the landscape, meandering past lock-keepers’ cottages, hill top castles and red-roofed villages nestling among vineyards and sunflower fields. Fed by reservoirs from the Black Mountain, or foothills of the central range, shaded by plane trees, pines and cypresses which stabilise the banks and preserve moisture, it’s a peaceful haven for holiday barges, yachts and cruisers. Fishermen doze on the banks, swans and ducks nest in the reeds and the old tow path doubles up as a cycling and walking trail. For those who cruise along the canal, there is plenty of

excitement, working the locks, ducking under low bridges, heading into the tunnel, and plenty to see, from Marseillan and the nearby oyster beds to the medieval walled town of Carcassonne, the largest in Europe, or Toulouse, the vibrant ‘pink city’ basking on the banks of the Garonne. There are picturesque harbours along the way, Castelnaudary, Le Somail, Capestang, wine tasting cellars, flower-draped inns, nature reserves, home to peacock butterflies and 200 species of birds, and glistening lagoons where flamingos feed among the islands. In Port Lauragais, the Pierre Paul Riquet Centre is dedicated to the history of the canal while at the nearby Seuil de Naurouze, the highest point on the route and the watershed between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, an obelisk has been erected in Riquet’s honour. There is no better place to celebrate this local genius, an engineer with amazing vision but also a caring man who introduced sick pay and rest days for his workers, centuries ahead of his time. by Solange Hando

Choosing The Right Way There are a wide range of complementary therapies available, but which one might be best for your condition? With such an array of complementary therapies on offer, it can be difficult to know which one might best suit your particular ailment or condition. Here’s a low-down on some of the most popular therapies and the kinds of conditions they can help: Acupuncture Acupuncture uses the insertion of fine needles into particular points in the skin. Where the needles are placed will depend on your condition. Acupuncturists believe that stimulating these points can correct imbalances in the flow of Qi or energy (see also Traditional Chinese Medicine below). Good for: pain relief (it is sometimes used post-surgery), menstrual and menopausal problems, tendonitis, urinary problems, sports injuries Chiropractic Chiropractors work to correct dysfunction in the joints and muscles and work particularly on the spinal column, where problems such as neck and back pain can originate. Through manual treatments, such as spinal manipulation and adjustment, it can treat and help to prevent mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system. Good for: headaches, lower back pain, neck pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, Scoliosis, stress Homeopathy Homeopathy uses highly diluted substances - usually given in tablet form - which help to trigger the body’s own natural system of healing. Based on the principle of treating ‘like with like’, the tablets contain minute amounts of substances, which in large doses would trigger a reaction, but in minute doses actually help to alleviate the condition. Good for: allergies, upper respiratory tract infections, bronchitis, hay fever, pre-menstrual syndrome, sinusitis Naturopathy Naturopathy uses a combination of natural therapies to help the body to heal itself. Therapies include diet, hydrotherapy, osteopathy, herbalism, homeopathy and exercise, which can all help the body to cleanse itself of toxins and alleviate stress. Good for: chronic and acute conditions, such as digestive problems, chronic fatigue, hormonal problems, anxiety Osteopathy Osteopathy is almost considered mainstream these days and you can often be treated on the NHS. Working on the bones, joints and muscles, osteopathy uses

22

manipulation, massage and light movements to holistically re-balance physical, mental and emotional problems. Good for: back pain, pregnancyrelated problems, sports injuries Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) TCM works on the belief that illness is caused by disharmony (or dis-ease) in the body due to an imbalance of the flow of Qi or energy. Qi is made up of two forces, yin and yang and when one of these forces dominates, then illness occurs. A combination of Chinese herbs and acupuncture is usually used. Good for: asthma and chest conditions, skin conditions such as eczema and rosacea What to expect from a consultation During the first consultation with your therapist you will be asked a lot of questions about your overall health, not just about your particular condition. This is because complementary therapists look at the body as a whole, not just one part of it. Expect to answer questions about your habits, diet, medical background and family health, as your therapist will need a full picture before they can decide on how to treat you. Remember to always consult your GP about your condition and don’t stop taking any prescribed medicine without discussing it with your GP first.

It’s not just about the Money, Money, Money… ...The importance of a Good Lettings Appraisal When you have a property and have decided to Let, this is the time to call your chosen local letting agent to visit the property. This is known in the industry as the Market Appraisal, though some agents still call this a Valuation. Technically, this is not correct as a Lettings Valuation would simply indicate giving a suggested price which would not provide a Landlord with enough information to make informed decisions about letting on its own. Unlike Sales, the achievable price is not as solely dependant on location and size, but the décor and style are equally as important. A Letting agent should be able to provide you with a rental price based on their opinion of the property, its location and condition, their experience of what has let recently in the area and in some cases it’s useful to prepare a mathematical calculation of the return on investment. The latter being not necessarily the correct way to price a property on its own merits but is indicative to realize the property’s ROI. As part of the process in determining what price to put the property on the market, an agent should be able to show you some comparables of what they have let in the area recently both through themselves and through other agents. They should be able to clearly indicate the condition and presentation of the property, what it went on the market for, what it achieved, and in addition, the term of the tenancy and the calibre of tenant it attracted. A good Lettings professional will walk through the property with you and make suggestions as to what may need attention prior to marketing and suggestions on how to maximize the anticipated rental. A little repaint here and there or new floor could make a huge difference. Most people rely on their senses, Smell, Sight, Touch, and Hearing. All these contribute towards the all important “gut” feeling first impression. If you have pets or the smell of smoke, this may be off-putting, likewise dampness or even a blocked drain can put people off. If the property has noticeable defects or falls down in some areas on presentation then it may give the impression of not being well maintained, likewise if surfaces are sticky or grubby to touch people will be concerns about what is not visible. Other factors other than size are the garden (and whether a gardener is included) the garage, usable loft space and the Energy Performance. All these things need to be taken into consideration when making suggestions to enable the Landlord achieve the best rental possible. The Lettings professional should then discuss with you what you want or need to achieve. If expectation and reality are poles apart the Letting Agent should be able to make suggestions to close the gap. This may depend on whether you have borrowing by means of a mortgage on the property.

Whilst it may be tempting to go with the highest price valuation, it’s important to get good justification from the agent as to how achievable the valuation is. Price the property incorrectly and you could waste weeks or months waiting for the right tenants to come along and end up accepting a lower than expected rental in the end. Once the void period is calculated as lost rental, nine times out of ten the Landlord would have been better letting the property a month earlier at the lower rental than waiting for the higher figure. Over-valuing is a well known trick that some more unscrupulous letting agents use to “win the instruction” as once you are in a sole agency agreement they can work on getting offers and eventually negotiate a lower price. When choosing your letting agent, price should only be one factor in the decision making process as the whole relationship with the letting agent should be considered with the view to this being a long lasting relationship based on mutual trust and respect. SurreyLets director Sally Asling, believes in ensuring a new Landlord is supplied with all the information regarding letting their property in Surrey. Sally says “On a market appraisal I would typically start with a walk through making notes of any defects that may need to be put right before letting. I look for issues that may fall under health and safety for lettings (HHSRA – Housing Health and Safety Rating System) or for things that may cause a problem with any current legislation. It’s amazing how many properties have potentially hazardous defects that a homeowner may not be aware of! After explaining this to the prospective Landlord we shall then typically move on the tenant they are likely to attract and I demonstrate comprisable property in the area. We discuss how the property should be presented and how best to market the property and what timescales should be expected. We talk about a realistic achievable price and the on the market price, along with insurances that can leave Landlords fully protected.” If you are thinking of letting your property in the Surrey area, Sally would be delighted to hear from you. Share the Scare This Halloween why not settle down for some good old-fashioned ghost stories with the youngest members of your family. We’re not suggesting you curl up with the latest Stephen King; our selection of children’s favourites will deliver just the right amount of spooky. From toddlers to teenagers, these tales will ensure Halloween is less of a trick and more of a treat.

Funnybones Janet and Allan Ahlberg What could be more fitting for Halloween than three skeletons on a night out? This classic tale of a somewhat unusual family unit will ease the youngest of readers into Halloween. Setting out on a walk, ready to scare someone and then settling for frightening themselves, it’s a humorous (or should that be humerus?) story with the best laughs coming when they try to reassemble Dog Skeleton. A definite bone-rattler for your littlies, it’s certain to have you humming ‘Dem bones, dem bones’ up until bedtime. The Graveyard Book Neil Gaiman Nobody Owens or ‘Bod’ is no ordinary boy. It’s not surprising really given that he’s been raised by ghosts and ghouls after his own family was murdered. Will Bod survive to adulthood given his unusual adopted family? Will his parents’ killers catch up to him? And how do you learn about life, from the dead? This is a strange and compelling tale for older children. Heavily influenced by Rudyard Kipling’s ‘The Jungle Book’, it’s easy to see why Gaiman

has earned himself an army of devoted fans… among the living. Pure Dead Magic Debi Gliori Move over Mary Poppins, there’s a new nanny in town. Mrs McLachlan’s hired to sort out the strange and mysterious Strega-Borgia family. She has her work cut out dealing with both the children and the parents, not to mention beasts in the basement. This is a Scottish clan in crisis and only a super nanny can come to their rescue. It’s a strange tale that mixes tradition and new technology into a bizarre brew that could have come straight from a Scottish cauldron. Little Shop of Hamsters (Goosebumps Horrorland) R.L. Stine The Goosebumps series does exactly what it says on the tin. Here’s one of our favourite titles in which Sam, who’s desperate to have a pet, starts work in a pet shop. He soon discovers that hamsters may be small, but they’re not always cute. For anyone who enjoyed

‘Bunnicula’, the vampire bunny has nothing on these evil fur-balls. Be careful what you wish for…and don’t forget to check the hamster cage before you go to sleep. Kiss of Death Malcolm Rose A school trip goes very wrong when twins Kim and Seth and their friend Wes visit Eyam: a community that was wiped out by the Black Death. Kim and Wes decide to take coins (one of which happens to be cursed) from the bottom of a well in the village only to have the theft come back to haunt them. When the boys are struck down with what looks like the plague, it’s Seth to the rescue. It brings new meaning to the phrase ‘take nothing but photographs’. The Boy Who Haunted Himself Terry Deary A bizarre story of an experiment that goes somewhat awry, the shy and retiring Peter Stone becomes possessed by a spirit from the past. He faces an epic internal struggle to regain his body and mind. This is a chilling tale, with a sting at the end. Paul McKenna fans: be warned.

Enjoy Some Tulip Mania All those years ago when ‘Tulipmania’ was rife, people were so taken by tulips that it’s said they paid similar to house prices for some especially prized tulip bulbs. Now that might seem crazy, but nowadays we can relax and enjoy tulips without spending a fortune.

horticultural gravel or grit in the base of the hole before planting the bulb. Don’t use grit or gravel left over from the local building site, as this often contains salts and other contaminants which may harm or kill garden plants.

They are amazingly good value, as a visit to your local garden centre will prove and now’s a great time to plant tulip bulbs. In fact it’s better to plant them over the next few weeks than to have planted them in September, so take the plunge and indulge in some tulip bulbs that have the potential to transform your flower beds and tubs next spring with their silken-petalled, strikingly coloured blooms.

Tulips make great plants for containers such as window boxes, tubs and decentsized pots and planters. All types do well, but shorter varieties generally look best (check the front of the pack or the catalogue for heights). Good drainage is essential so make sure that there are plenty of crocks in the base of the container and that it’s well supplied with drainage holes. Either a loam-free multi-purpose compost or use this mixed 50:50 with a loam-based compost and a bit of added grit.

Late Planting

Tulip bulbs are best planted after you plant most of your other spring flowering bulbs. Planting from the last half of October and well in to November generally works best. Plant too early and the bulbs will be far more prone to damage by the fungal ‘tulip fire’ disease which wrecks the leaves and flowers, so you can relax in the knowledge that spring is now packed full of potential.

Gritty Bed

If your garden soil is inclined to be clay and rather heavy, tulips may suffer and are certainly less likely to come back after their first wet winter. A heavy loam works well but anything that isn’t well drained may cause problems. You can solve this to a good extent by digging an extra large planting hole and putting an inch or two of

Contained Colour

Fantastic Foliage

Tulips are best known for their gorgeous flowers, but don’t forget that many also have good looking foliage which can help to bring colour and texture to your pots and beds. Try the Kaufmanniana types such as ‘Johann Strauss’(dark red flowers with yellow edges and mottled leaves), or even better the Greigii type tulips which all have maroon patterning on the leaves, such as ‘Red Riding Hood’ (richest red with black). Choosing tulips with fantastic foliage means that they give you something to enjoy both before and after the fantastic floral display.

It’s the ultimate classic combination, but

The Elephant in the Room During a storytelling workshop on the isle of Sheppey in Kent last year - when residents were asked to come forward with local myths and legends - an intriguing story from Tudor times emerged. Queen Elizabeth I was said to have visited Sheppey unexpectedly in 1582, and the mayor of the town (who was also a thatcher) was so shocked to see the royal retinue that he fell off a roof, ripping his breeches as he went. Sympathetic to his obvious embarrassment, the queen promised to send him a new pair of breeches each year to commemorate the event. However, the mayor became tired of receiving his annual gift of breeches and asked if the Queen would send something for the town instead. In response he received a letter promising “an elephant”. The town made preparations to feed and shelter this unusual gift, including the construction of a stoutly built pen next to the harbour. It was only when the royal messenger arrived on the due date with a small purse of coins that the letter was re-examined: on a second reading the word was found to be “equivalent”, not “elephant”. One can only imagine the reaction of the disgruntled townsfolk. To a 21st century audience it may seem odd to hear a Tudor story relating to elephants, as they are so strongly identified with the British Empire and all things Victorian. However, our nation’s relationship with this fascinating animal began much, much earlier. Britain officially began its love affair with the elephant in 1256, when Henry III received one as a gift from Louis IX of France and ordered his sheriffs to build a pen measuring 40 foot long and 20 foot wide in the Tower of London. It’s not hard to imagine the mixture of fear and fascination which must have greeted this new arrival: in fact, it’s not unlikely that the capital would have been gripped by ‘elephant fever’, with an outpouring of stories, ballads, carvings and paintings all celebrating the King’s exotic prisoner in the Tower. Around the same period, an ancient manuscript called the Physiologus Theobaldi

was translated from the Latin, providing some fascinating (albeit wildly inaccurate and wholly improbable) facts about the elephant. For centuries this text was considered an absolute authority on elephants. Even Shakespeare borrowed from the Physiologus when he wrote: “The elephant hath joints, but none for courtesy; his legs are legs for necessity, not for flexure”, reflecting the common belief that the elephant was unable to bend its legs. Today elephants are seen as familiar, friendly creatures but – thanks to the Physiologus – our ancestors revered them as semi-mythical beings. No wonder then, that a wealth of legends and stories collected around them. Time Team’s Guy de la Bedoyere believes the Queenborough story possibly originated as a folk myth, inspired by Henry III’s elephant in the Tower. Sheppey’s elephant story certainly bears all the hallmarks of legend: it has been told in a number of different versions, with the gift ascribed to various different queens, including Edward III’s Queen Philippa, Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria. However tempting it may be to believe that the Sheppey story is the stuff of mere myth or legend, there is evidence to suggest that it has some basis in truth. Next to Queenborough Harbour there is a small public park not much bigger than a horse paddock: locals still refer to this modest piece of public green as “the Elephant Park.” By Claudia Leaf

November

Rating: *** (3) New car launches take place pretty frequently. Audi, for example, has delivered no less than 21 new models into showrooms since 2010. In those same two years, niche Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi has launched absolutely nothing. That’s why, as car launches go, this new Outlander is a pretty big deal.

get a 2.2-litre diesel engine and a four-wheel drive powertrain. Mitsubishi has worked hard on the unit’s green credentials. We drove a pre-production model, but by the time the car is launched in November, the maker hopes it will produce under 145g/km (down from 165g/km) and return more than 50mpg.

So has the wait been worth it? Well, in short, yes. No longer a partnership with Peugeot Citroen (who sold versions of the predecessor), the new Outlander is described by Mitsubishi as an ‘engineer’s car’. What it means is efficiency, space and refinement were all high on the agenda – looks, however, appear to have slipped off it.

The 148bhp engine doesn’t lack grunt either. With 380Nm of torque it pulled strongly on the German Autobahns and twisty mountain roads that made up our test route. The 2.2litre is likely to be good for 125mph and will crack the benchmark 60mph sprint in under 10 seconds. What’s really impressive though is the refinement. Inside, the engine is barely audible, while wind and tyre noise are kept to a minimum too.

In fact, it’s worth dealing with our main complaint now. If there’s one thing that lets the new Outlander down, it’s the conservative styling. At a time when design is at the forefront of our lives, the Mitsubishi will be hard pressed to stand out in a class bristling with good-looking alternatives. However, the new model does make a strong case for itself. Let’s start under the bonnet. In the UK, we’ll only

If we were to be picky, we did find the steering a little numb at the dead ahead, but the manual six speed gearbox was direct and pleasant to use. There was also a noticeable lack of body roll for a 4x4 in corners. New technology, for Mitsubishi at least, will also make a debut on the

Outlander. There’s a lane departure warning system, adaptive cruise control and a low-speed anti-collision system which will apply the brakes for drivers if it thinks you’re about to hit the car in front – at a roundabout, for example. What will come as standard is yet to be finalised, but expect the lot on the topof-the-range model. There’s also a new multimedia system with sat nav, which is far easier to use than before and an electronic tailgate. But by far the biggest selling point for the Outlander is the two very-usable extra seats in the boot floor. They can be extended in seconds and fold away completely flat. They’re perfect for parents who sometimes need an extra set of chairs for the school run. Mitsubishi aims to sell 4,000 Outlanders a year in the UK at slightly more than the current model (around £25,000). We think that could be a tough ask with this sole offering. However, when the plug-in hybrid version arrives next year offering real world economy of 140mpg, it could be a very different story indeed.

Seasonal Recipe Venison is a lean and flavoursome red meat which is in season from October through to February. For the best quality, buy from a trusted butcher or farmers’ market. This warming casserole is perfect for a weekend supper served with creamy mashed potato and a glass of full-bodied red wine. Place the venison in a bowl and pour over the wine. Add the juniper berries and bay leaves, cover and marinate in the fridge for 4-5 hours or overnight. Remove from the fridge 1 hour before starting to cook the casserole. Preheat the oven to 150ºC/300ºF/Gas Mark 2. Strain the venison from the red wine (reserving the wine). Heat half the oil and butter in a large flameproof casserole dish and fry the venison in 2-3 batches until browned all over, adding the rest of the oil and butter when necessary. Remove the venison with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the onions to the casserole and fry for 6-7 minutes until golden, adding the garlic after 3 minutes. Sprinkle over the seasoned flour and fry for a further 1-2 minutes. Gradually stir in the wine and stock and bring to the boil, scraping any sediment from the base of the casserole. Add the venison, parsnips, carrots and half the thyme sprigs to the casserole and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cover and cook in the preheated oven for 1½ – 2 hours until the venison and vegetables are tender. Remove from the oven and stir in the redcurrant jelly. Return the casserole, uncovered, to the oven for a further 20-30 minutes. Serve garnished with the rest of the thyme sprigs and with creamy mashed potato, if liked.
