European University Institute The European University Institute (EUI) is a unique international centre for doctoral and post-doctoral studies and research with a European focus, situated in the Tuscan hills overlooking Florence. Since its establishment 40 years ago by the six founding members of the then European Communities, the EUI has earned a reputation as a leading academic institution in its four departments of economics, law, history, and social and political science. The EUI’s distinctly international environment offers unique academic training, enriches the intellectual experience and provides exceptional opportunities for academics across disciplines and borders. Our graduates go on to find excellent positions around the world in top universities, national governments, European institutions, and international organisations.

Department of Political and Social Science (SPS) The research programme of the SPS Department places emphasis on contemporary political and social phenomena, occurring principally — but not exclusively — within Europe at the national, sub-national and transnational levels. The Department’s research interests range across comparative politics, international relations, sociology, and social and political theory. The Department favours a multi-faceted approach to research projects and doctoral theses, many of which cut across traditional academic boundaries. The EUI SPS Department is regularly ranked among the very top departments in political and social sciences in Europe and is strongly connected, through exchange programmes and joint research endeavors, with numerous universities beyond the confines of Europe.
