WELCOME Welcome to the Eugene Marathon Weekend!

Over the past two years there have been times when it felt like this moment would never come, so it is with an extra dose of gratitude and enthusiasm that I want to welcome you to the 15th Eugene Marathon Weekend!

Like you, all of us at the Eugene Marathon are thrilled at the anticipation of race day. It’s been three years since we ‘Finished on the Fifty’ in Autzen Stadium, and since then we’ve learned to adapt in ways we could never have predicted. In fact, as challenging and painful as the last two years have been, we’ve grown as an organization and I’m proud to say that 2022 marks a record number of participants in the Eugene Marathon Weekend.

2022 promises to be an unforgettable year in Track Town U.S.A. and it’s an honor for the Eugene Marathon to welcome runners of all abilities to experience the magic of Hayward Field at the University of Oregon. This summer, Hayward Field will host more top-notch track and field than ever before, culminating with the World Athletics Championships Oregon22 - the first time track and field’s premier event has been held in the United States. The Eugene Marathon Team has the privilege of managing the world championship marathon and race walk events, so we ask that you please warm up the streets for the champions who will follow in your footsteps!

THE SATURDAY EVENTS! Now Presented by OCCU W

hile many of the marathoners and half marathoners are fueling, resting, and taking it easy Saturday morning, Hayward Field at the University of Oregon will be teeming with runners of all ages for the Kids Duck Dash and Eugene 5K, both presented by OCCU (Oregon Community Credit Union).

The first race of Race Weekend starts at 8:00 am on Saturday morning - the Kids Duck Dash presented by OCCU. This 1-kilometer race for runners aged 2-13 is the perfect event to kick off the energy of Race Weekend, as thousands of little ducks race through University of Oregon, make the turn onto Hayward Field and kick down the home stretch to the finish line - the same finish line where Eugene Marathon and Half Marathon runners will finish on Sunday.

It’s always been the Eugene Marathon’s mission to keep the Duck Dash accessible and affordable, and a new partnership with OCCU this year took that mission a step further. Through partnering with OCCU Foundation, the philanthropic arm of OCCU, the Eugene Marathon was able to establish the Kids Duck Dash Free Entry program, meaning every child who wants to participate in the race can, regardless of their ability to pay.

OCCU Foundation also supported the Eugene Marathon charity partners, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Lane County and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Oregon & SW Washington’s Springfield House.

In collaboration with CASA, the Eugene Marathon and OCCU Foundation created a Champion Cape available for purchase for registrants and racers. OCCU Foundation is covering all expenses for the capes, which means 100% of cape purchases go to benefit the meaningful work of CASA. Once the waddling is finished, the Eugene 5K presented by OCCU gets underway at 8:45 am. It’s not just the finish line that makes this 10

race unique; two large Krusteaz Pancakes, Flap Jack and Flap Jill, compete in the race ever year.

Runners who beat these fast pancakes win a year’s supply of Krusteaz Pancake mix! While the pancake runners aren’t very aerodynamic, they are indeed speedy.

The Eugene 5K also serves as a fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Oregon & SW Washington. Runners can purchase a pair of red and white Ronald-inspired socks during registration or at the Expo with 100% of proceeds benefiting RMHC – thanks, once again to the partnership with OCCU Foundation. Even better, Krusteaz will donate $1 to RMHC for every runner that does NOT beat Flap Jack or Flap Jill - so even though you may be going home without pancake mix, you’re still raising funds for charity.

There is metered and 2-hour street parking around Hayward Field on Saturdays.

Additionally, many UO parking lots are available and free to the public on weekends. Read signs carefully.

SUNDAY — MARATHON & HALF MARATHON

Parking around Hayward Field on Sunday will be limited and parking violators will be towed. Many UO lots are free to park on Sunday – read signs carefully. We encourage participants to park downtown and take shuttles from the Graduate Eugene. Downtown street parking and parking garages are also free on Sundays.

PEACEHEALTH RIDES

PeaceHealth Rides offers a healthy, convenient and fun way to explore Eugene and enhance the Eugene Marathon experience. A network of 300 bikes and over 35 stations are available for users to pick-up and drop-off available bicycles for oneway trips across the city. SHUTTLES PRE-RACE SHUTTLES

Pre-race shuttles are for Marathon and Half Marathon participants wearing bibs only. THIS WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED and random bag checks will be conducted.

Shuttles to the start run every 5-10 minutes from the following locations between 5:30 am - 6:40 am.

• Graduate Eugene (66 E 6th Ave, Eugene, OR) - Shuttles load on the 7th Ave. side of the hotel. Downtown street parking and City of Eugene parking garages with hundreds of parking spots are FREE on Sunday.

• Hutton St. and Kruse Way (Springfield, OR) - Participants staying in any of the surrounding eight hotels or being dropped off may access this shuttle location. Parking is not available at this shuttle stop.

• Valley River Inn (1000 Valley River Way, Eugene, OR)

• Start/Finish - Shuttle drop-off and post race pick-up is located at 18th and AMAZO Agate, near Hayward Field.

POST-RACE SHUTTLES

THERE’S MAGIC IN THESE MEDALS

Salvaged wood from Historic Hayward Field tells the story behind the 2021 and 2022 finishers medals

W

hen you think of medals at large marathons, you typically think of the standard circular race medal. Medals made from metals, right? Even though it’s a much more sustainable, environmentally-friendly material, wood has never caught on as a material used for large races.

Until the Eugene Marathon had an idea.

In late 2019, University of Oregon offered local groups and organizations the opportunity to create a proposal for projects to utilize salvaged materials from the renovation of Historic Hayward Field. The Eugene Marathon jumped at the opportunity, with the idea to create race medals from the wooden materials.

In early 2020, Oregon graciously awarded the race 19 stair boards taken from the historic East Grandstand to use for the 2021 race medal.

Those stair boards were constructed into medals for the 2021 Virtual Eugene Marathon. The medals were made in the shape of the stair boards that they were cut from; stairs that thousands and thousands of fans walked up and down to their seats, inside the most legendary venue in track & field, for nearly 100 years.

While the idea was unique, what would the reception be?

Frank Lloyd Wright said that wood is “the most humanly intimate of all materials.” And when you add such a storied history to that wood, it takes on a whole new meaning and builds a whole new connection.

The medals were a hit! Over 5,000 runners from all over the globe participated in the 2021 Virtual Eugene Marathon to earn a piece of Historic Hayward Field. “Hayward Magic” Medals were sent to all 50 states, 24 countries and 5 continents.

These medals weren’t just made from a piece of wood. They were made from countless historic moments, dreams realized, and memories made. Runners took on an extra challenge to earn them, running 13.1 or 26.2 miles on their hometown paths, in parks, and on treadmills, all across the world.

Building upon the success of the 2021 “Hayward Magic” medals, the University of Oregon offered the Eugene Marathon the opportunity to collect more salvaged Hayward Field material – this time in the form of the gigantic timbers that held up the East Grandstands. These timbers, weighing several thousand pounds and measuring about 20 feet long, were then turned into the 2022 Eugene Marathon and Half Marathon medals. This year, the salvaged Hayward Field wood is displayed upon a metal backing in the shape of the new Hayward Field Tower, to represent the wood from the historic stadium with the metal to represent the reimagined Hayward Field. Each timber is slightly different, resulting in a remarkably unique medal for each participant.

In addition to being made with reclaimed materials, the 2021 and 2022 medals were also designed and produced in Eugene and Portland, for a truly made-in-Oregon process from start to finish. One local employee who assisted in the medal production shared intimate memories of riding his bike to Hayward Field after school to watch Steve Prefontaine run.

And while the material is sustainable, it is indeed limited. When it’s gone, it simply can’t be produced anymore. That makes the 2021 and 2022 Eugene Marathon and Half Marathon medals even more special.
