DENNIS KUTRIEB

➜ From the manager • 29.07.2023

Our last pre-season comes at last so welcome back to the fourth and final home friendly here at the Kuflink Stadium.

After entertaining West Ham United on Tuesday night, it’s a similar challenge with the visit of Chelsea’s U21s this afternoon. They have enjoyed a number of games against National League opposition this summer and I welcome Mark Robinson and all his backroom staff and squad today.

I was very pleased once again with the progress of our preparation and while we always say the final result does not matter so much in pre-season, you certainly can’t underestimate how much a win in any game benefits you as a player. So it was really good that the players found a way to win again on Tuesday after letting West Ham back into the game for their equaliser. We created good chances and we scored the winner right in the middle of that flurry of chances – always a good time to score when you’re on top to make the pressure count.

It was a high-quality game and a real exercise in possession football. They had long spells on the ball and made us chase, we had long periods and did the same to them so that is always really important for us as we go into the National League season next week.

West Ham will have many young players capable of going out on loan anywhere from League Two to Championship level so that combined with the collective performance and the high-intensity nature of the game was a good reward for all our work this month.

So on to today’s game. Pre-season has its place in our plans, it is vitally important to prepare but of course everyone wants to begin the real action by the time you get to the end of a month of warm-up games. We will be at that point on the final whistle this afternoon but before that we have more preparation and football to play.

Chelsea’s players are perhaps one or two years younger in many cases than West Ham’s but they finished third in their Premier League 2 campaign last season so I expect a similar type of game. They will know what National League opposition is about as well because of their pre-season games throughout this month.

Enjoy the game this afternoon and get behind us for the opener at Rochdale next week. It is always great to feature on TV and to showcase our club – so whether you are supporting from behind the screen on Saturday or in person with us, be proud of your club and your players because now we start a long campaign ahead and we will give you everything.

CLUB LINKS

There are a few links already in the Fleet squad with both Billy Clifford and Jack Wakely having played at youth level for Chelsea. Clifford spent 11 years in the Stamford Bridge youth ranks and was loaned out to Colchester United, Yeovil Town and Royal Antwerp in his time there. And despite only being 22, Wakely’s time with Chelsea numbered 12 years as he joined them at U9 level and spent three yars as a professional before signing for Wycombe Wanderers. Our two most famous Chelsea alumni, however, are Tommy Baldwin and Andy Wilson. Baldwin (below) won the FA Cup and European Cup Winners’ Cup with the Blues in the early Seventies before playing for the Fleet in 1976/77. And our first ever manager Wilson played 250 times between 1923 and 1931 for Chelsea, costing the Blues a then princely sum of £6,500.

KNOW YOUR

We’ve played Arsenal’s young guns here in pre-season before and of course West Ham’s on several occasions too. Today we can add Chelsea to that list as their U21s make the trip to Kent for our final pre-season friendly. We have entertained Chelsea XIs in pre-season friendlies in years gone by but this is the first clash for a good few years and follows in the footsteps of the Chelsea Women’s Academy who played against our women’s team this time last year.

As Dennis Kutrieb mentioned in his programme notes, Chelsea’s players are likely to be a little younger than West Ham’s – but don’t let that lull you into a false sense of security. Many of them were involved with the team that finished above West Ham in the Premier League 2 last season.

Among the visitors this afternoon is likely to be new signing Alex Matos who moved from Norwich City earlier this month and there are a host of youth internationals for the Blues here today.

OPPONENT

Mark Robinson’s squad have played three sets of National League opposition already this pre-season, drawing 3-3 at Boreham Wood before losing 5-3 and 3-1 to Barnet and Aldershot Town respectively.

Up front Jimmy-Jay Morgan is a great finisher and has scored goals aplenty for England at U16 and U17 level. He returned to Stamford Bridge for a fee from Southampton in January having previously played for the Blues in a younger age group.

Full-back Ishé Samuels-Smith cost Chelsea in the region of £4m from Everton while others such as Zak Sturge and Leo Castledine are highly rated. Left-back Dylan Williams, meanwhile, has already played six times in the Championship, for Derby County.

Nobody needs reminding that next week marks a return to competitive football at Rochdale – until then, sit back and relax for 90 minutes as it’s the last chance you may get to do so ahead of another Fleet league campaign!

MARK ROBINSON

A promising youth player for Fulham before injuries cut short his career, the Blues coach spent 17 years at AFC Wimbledon as Academy coach, managing the first-team in 2021/22 where he built the youngest side in the EFL. He took over as Chelsea’s development head coach in May 2022 and last season steered the team from relegation candidates to title contenders in Premier League 2.

First-Team Experience

Head Coach HARVEY VALE

Talented player who can play in a number of midfield positions as well as higher up the pitch or wide in attacking roles. He made five appearances for the Chelsea first-team in cup competitions and played for Hull City on loan. He also captained England U20s at the World Cup this year.

GOAL-SHY CHAMPIONS

Attack wins you games, defence wins you titles.” When Sir Alex Ferguson tells you how to win a league championship, it’s probably in your interest to sit up and listen. We usually think of great champions as dominant, free-flowing attacking sides, scoring goals for fun and, if possible, high on the entertainment factor. But really, it doesn’t matter if you score the most goals, or have the meanest defence, or 98% possession. It’s all about the points on the board, and however you accumulate them, in the end, the name on the trophy is all that anybody remembers. That’s what Swedish side AIK realised in 1997/98, when they not only failed to score the most goals on their way to winning the Allsvenskan title; they scored the least.

In the middle of the 1990s, AIK were in a bit of a rut. One of Sweden’s most successful clubs, their Allsvenskan titles had all come before the war, except for one in 1983. They had more consistent success in the Swedish Cup, winning it in both 1996 and 1997, as well as embarking on a run to the quarter-finals of the Cup Winners Cup where they faced Barcelona.

But that European run was to prove a doubleedged sword. Success saw the poaching of AIK’s prized talent: Magnus Hedman moved to Coventry, Gary Lundgren to Zaragoza. In 1997 they finished a lowly eighth, far closer to the relegation zone in the 14-team league than was comfortable.

➜ theuntoldgame.co.uk | @TheUntoldGame 20 FLEET REVIEW Season 2023/24 ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

A change was needed, and AIK director Stefan Soderberg set off to Japan to find it. There, managing Vissel Kobe, was Stuart Baxter (pictured right), an Englishman who had played and managed in Sweden and, for tax reasons, was looking to leave the Far East.

Baxter’s first job was to replace some of the talent that had set off around Europe, and in Anders Limpar he did just that. The former Arsenal man was beginning to wind down his career, but was still plenty good enough for the Allsvenskan. But more importantly, Baxter changed the way AIK played. Throughout Sweden, a flat 442 with balls down the line reigned supreme. So Baxter tried something different. Possession football, passing through the middle, pressuring the fullbacks (sound familiar, Fleet fans?!). Mixed early results masked some impressive performances, such as the opening 1-1 draw in which AIK produced 23 shots on goal to their opponents Orgryte’s three. Two defeats and two draws in the opening six games led to the big game against IFK Goteborg. Something clicked, the players played out of the skins, and recorded a 1-0 victory. That was the confidence-inducing moment, and another single-goal victory against Malmo the following week set out the course for the rest of the season.

Far more draws than were comfortable followed, but AIK went unbeaten from that moment to the end of the season. Baxter’s system was working, producing huge numbers of chances, but the

quality wasn’t quite there. AIK only scored more than one goal four times over the course of the season, never scoring more than two. They only won by more than a single goal twice. But they racked up the 1-0 victories, giving them a chance going into the final day. They would need to beat 12th placed Orgryte, the team against whom their season had started, while they needed already relegated Hacken to pull off a miracle against table-topping Helsingborg.

AIK did what they had done all season, with a solid performance and a 1-0 win. For the last 15 minutes of the match, supporters in the stand crowded around handheld radios, desperate for news from Hacken. The relegated side had gone behind, but pulled one back through Mathias Larsson. As the game ticked on, Larsson broke through, and slotted another into the net. AIK fans erupted as the final whistle went. Only 25 goals scored, just 15 conceded, and champions! It was an incredible achievement.

Baxter is insistent that his team didn’t play defensively, they just so controlled the game that their opponents couldn’t get at them. The following year, they conceded even fewer – just 14 – and finally got their shooting boots on, hitting 42 goals. But it didn’t matter; Helsingborg got their revenge, and pipped AIK to the title by a single point. So, maybe, Sir Alex was right. Attack doesn’t always win titles.
