A raffle for a 20 BMX Redline will happen with each ticket costing $5. Haskins, known for his quick wit and big heart, was a Tampa bike mechanic for over 65 years. He started his business at 17 years old in 1958 by purchasing Tampa Cycle from his uncle, later renaming it Joe Haskins Bike Shop. As a man dedicated to the people, Haskins' goal was utility and getting folks back on the road. He passed away last year at the age of 79 after battling illness for a few years. Haskins’ family now runs the business and they want all riders to come celebrate the legacy of its creator. Sunday, March 20, 11 a.m. (ride departs at noon). oughly 300 people rallied at St. Petersburg’s City Hall building Saturday afternoon to protest Florida’s recently passed House Bill 1557, dubbed by critics as the “Don’t Say ‘Gay’” bill. The “It’s OK to Say Gay” rally featured support from local elected officials and LGBTQ advocates like State Rep. Michele Rayner, Pinellas County School Board Member Caprice Edmond and Nathan Bruemmer, LGBTQ Consumer Advocate for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. As streams of people made their way off the St. Pete Pier, the event was briefly interrupted by

local white nationalist streamer Jared Noble, who goes by the name “Woozuh.” Noble is an associate of far-right troll and Insurrectionist Tim Gionet, aka Baked Alaska. Besides vocal opposition from local protestors, the fallout of “Don’t Say Gay” also caused Disney CEO Bob Chapek to announce the company would pause all political donations, following intense scrutiny aimed at Disney’s GOP-heavy donations. As of now, HB 1557 is ready to be reviewed by DeSantis. If signed, the measure would go into effect this July. See more photos and read further via cltampa.com/slideshows.—Colin Wolf

Tampa Mayor claims rent control would disrupt development. It's an industry that funded over half of her PAC. By Justin Garcia agree with Castor’s outlook on rent stabilization. “I don’t think it would drive away developers, I talk to them regularly,” Gudes said. “What we need is a plan that will work for everyone.” CL reached out to the city’s communications director about the mayor’s funding sources and whether or not it affects her decision making on rent stabilization, but has not yet received a response.

The Hill. “Nearly one million rent-regulated apartments house over 2 million renters with a median income of just $35,000, renters who would be either homeless or faced with crippling rent burdens without the protections that New York’s rent laws offer.” Real estate economists and landlord lobbies have argued that rent control ruins cities. The Manhattan Institute, a self-described “leading voice of free-market ideas” argues that rent control does harm in attempting to protect low-income renters. “Rent control is not the way to increase the amount of affordable housing, nor is it a solution to poverty, inequality, or segregation.

A

t a March 9 press conference, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor told reporters that rent stabilization and rent control aren’t viable solutions to the housing crisis because the measures would “kill development.” What Castor didn’t mention is that over half of her “Tampa Strong” political action committee (PAC) is funded by sources tied to development. Records from the Florida Division of Elections show that, $539,950 out of $1,039,180.93— roughly 52%—came from donors who fit into categories aligned with industries associated with development. These categories include: real estate and construction firms, private equity firms, real estate attorneys, engineering firms and developers. Real estate firms gave the most out of all of these categories, coming in at $323,350. Contributions from construction groups came in second at $128,600. Tampa Bay Lightning owner and local mega-developer Jeff Vinik gave $194,000, or 18.6% of the funding for the PAC. While politicians regularly receive money from developers during campaigns, the stance Castor took last Wednesday strayed from her administration’s previous argument that rent control or rent stabilization would be too burdensome and costly because of state law that makes the process difficult. Instead, she aligned with developers. At the press conference last week, Castor announced that $5 million of city taxpayer general funds will go to subsidize private landlords who have increased rent. A reporter asked if rent stabilization would be a more effective option. “We have looked at rent stabilization and also capping rents, but what that does is, and I know it’s difficult for individuals that are struggling right now, I fully understand that. But those aren’t the answers,” Castor said. “It’s supply and demand. If we put the caps on rents, rent stabilization, that’s going to kill development in our particular area. Developers are going to go to other locations throughout the United States that will welcome them and their projects.” The $5 million in city funding allocated toward rent increases is already on pause, at 960 applicants. Tampa City Council Chair Orlando Gudes told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that he didn’t

City Council voted against declaring a housing state of emergency, the first step toward enacting rent control, citing the cost and difficulty. Evidence from some of America’s largest and most successful cities shows rent control helps protect renters, and development doesn’t disappear. Los Angeles has had forms of rent control since 1978, and the types of rent control vary by municipality. But in the city of Los Angeles proper, some renters are covered by an ordinance that limits rents to rise between 3%-8% annually. While landlords have challenged this law, and found legal loopholes to get around it, the fact remains that when rent control went into effect in the city 44 years ago, developers did not abandon the city.

STRONG TIES: About 52% of Castor’s ‘Tampa Strong’ PAC was contributed by development interests. St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch—whose campaign was also funded largely by developers—didn’t just make a blanket statement against rent control and move on. He contracted Harvard University students to provide a report on rent control and affordable housing. The Welch administration made the same arguments as Castor’s when it came to rent control, saying that state law makes the process burdensome and could cost the city millions. On Feb. 11, St. Pete

New York City, New Jersey and Washington D.C. have also implemented rent control, as have an estimated 182 municipalities in the U.S. “Despite decades of false ‘sky is falling’ alarmism by the well-funded landlord lobby, rent control has done more to keep housing affordable and keep people in affordable housing than any other program in New York’s history,” Cea Weaver, Campaign Coordinator for NYC’s Housing Justice for All, wrote in an op-ed for

Instead, it acts to restrict the supply of housing, transferring wealth to current tenants at the expense of future and market-rate tenants,” the Manhattan Institute published in a 2020 report. “Insiders—those living in rent-protected units—generally win at the expense of outsiders. In an effort to resist gentrification, rent control leads to the decay of the buildings, as owners have less revenue to spend on maintenance and improvements.”

St. Pete City Council marks $34 million for affordable housing. By Arielle Stevenson

L

ess than a month after over a hundred St. Pete residents stood outside city hall demanding rent control and a housing state of emergency, it seems like the city’s leadership might actually be listening. No, rent control isn’t being implemented. No, the city hasn’t declared even a symbolic housing state of emergency. But during a March 3 city council meeting, council voted to allot additional funds from the American Rescue Plan (ARP) towards affordable housing. Of the city’s $45.4 million in ARP funds, $34.303 million will now go to some form of affordable housing, with $11.1 million going towards health and social equity. “If you go outside and talk to working people here, it’s clear housing is the number one issue,” Karla Correa with the St. Pete Tenant’s Union told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. “This is a win for the people, because we wouldn’t have gotten that money had it not been for the sustained public pressure.” Previous recommendations for investments from

14 | MARCH 17 - 23, 2022 | cltampa.com

ARP funds towards infrastructure, public health and safety, economic recovery and resiliency allocations were reduced from over $18 million to zero. “I do think it’s fair to say this absolutely has come from the fact that a community is begging for help right now,” Councilmember Richie Floyd told CL. When the city first asked residents for input on how to spend the $45 million in ARP funds, the allotment for housing was a little over $15 million. By December of last year, that figure had increased another $5 million to over $20 million towards housing. “Back when this began last year, hundreds of residents came out and said housing, housing, housing,” Aaron Dietrich with the People’s Council of St. Pete added. “It’s really encouraging to see the city’s original offer more than double. I think it’s a testament to the pressure, to the need, to see that money allocated where the people said they wanted it to go.”

In addition to the increased funds for affordable housing, St. Pete City Council is also considering how to create a right to legal counsel program for tenants. Floyd introduced the new business item last Thursday, recommending that tenants get a guaranteed right to legal council, especially for those facing eviction. His item was referred to the Youth and Family Services Committee for discussion. “How fast will the staff be ready to have that discussion? It just depends,” Floyd said. “The committee meets next week, and I imagine we’ll probably talk about it there, get feedback, and then talk about it one more time in committee before it goes to the whole council for a vote.” Floyd says guaranteed right to counsel is “very much possible,” unlike the legal risks outlined in the presentation last month on the possibility of rent control. “There’s nothing stopping us from doing it legally,” Floyd said. “What we’re trying to do now is design a program we can put up for a vote. And it’s not as straightforward as you’d think.” It’s possible the program could be funded with the ARP funds set aside for housing, too.

HOUSING

New York City was the first in the nation to implement a right-to-counsel program for tenants in 2017. Expanded in 2020, in response to COVID-19, the initiative provides free legal services, including representation, to tenants facing eviction in housing court. In New York City’s Report on Fiscal Year Four (2021) of the Implementation of Universal Access to Legal Services, data showed “the overwhelming majority of tenants who have city-funded legal representation are successful in their legal proceedings, with 84% of households represented by a RTC lawyer able to remain in their homes.” According to the National Coalition for a Civil Right to Counsel, since New York City’s RTC program for tenants began in 2017, at least 21 other states or municipalities have some form of RTC for tenants underway or already in place. “A woman with the tenant’s union got a lawyer through Gulf Coast Legal Services and that lawyer was able to tie up her eviction in the courts for six months,” Correa said. “She was able to find a new place, and now she’s safely housed. Versus if you don’t have a lawyer, that eviction can fly through the courts in less than a month.” continued on page 17

STEP BY STEP: Aaron Dietrich with the People’s Council of St. Pete. continued from page 14 Floyd says he wants to see the right to counsel for as many people as possible, not just in situations where an eviction is underway. He says he has a comprehensive approach to tackling the housing issue, which also focuses on enforcing and retooling those laws already in place. “We can give tenants a leg up in this battle where they have a little bit more power to make sure landlords are actually operating correctly,” Floyd said. “The state doesn’t let us make our laws that much stronger, but there’s nothing stopping us from actually enforcing the laws that we already have. I don’t believe we’re doing an adequate job of that right now.” In 2019, St. Pete City Council passed the Tenant’s Bill of Rights, which spelled out rights to renters protected by the city. Last year, some of those rights were expanded to include increasing notice of nonrenewal to tenants from 15 days to 30 days. Another area of focus is how code enforcement in the city is operating right now and who’s being fined the most. “The Codes department needs to step up and actually do their job,” Correa said. “Because as they operate now, it’s just to penalize Black homeowners in South St. Pete, and put liens on their properties for things like not cutting their grass.” After the People’s Council’s mass demonstration last month, residents voted to escalate their actions to civil disobedience. Those involved proposed a tent city occupation outside city hall and dozens signed up to participate knowing arrests were possible, if not likely. Others volunteered to provide food and funds to those willing to risk everything to get the city’s attention. For now, the tent city escalation is on hold. And Mayor Ken Welch has asked to speak with delegates

from the People’s Council this week to discuss other options for solving the housing crisis. “We’re prepared to advise residents to call off the tent city if a process can be agreed upon that will allow them a direct say in how we address this emergency,” Dietrich told CL. “This isn’t a protest movement, it’s people committed to fighting for their community.” Residents and organizers aren’t giving up on rent control or a housing state of emergency yet either, but there’s a greater goal in the distance: guaranteed housing for all. A recent report from the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University found that nearly half of nationwide renters are cost burdened, paying more than 30% of their income on rent. According to the same report, the highest rates of those behind on rent were in the South, with Florida reporting over 15% of renters behind on rent. “No one solution will fix this,” Dietrich said. “Imagine if we dealt with our water this way? We would have a water crisis.” One major long-term solution? Public housing or what some are calling “social housing.” “I would like the city to take it upon itself to build housing that’s maybe for co-op ownership, specifically mixed income public housing,” Floyd said. “Clearly the way we’ve done affordable housing, where we subsidize new development, is not taking a big enough bite out of the problem.” The People’s Council hopes Mayor Welch will be open to their ideas when they meet on Friday. “We want to help him build a legacy that could remake housing as an example for the entire country,” Dietrich said. “A housing plan that residents would be fighting for on your behalf. We can build that together.”

THAT’S ERAP: St. Petersburg residents will benefit from new funds for rental assistance.

Help for rent

Pinellas commissioners expand rental assistance to hotel tenants. By Justin Garcia

P

inellas County Commissioners voted unanimously on March 8 to expand county rental assistance to residents of the City of St. Petersburg, and those living in hotels and motels within the county. Pinellas still has $18,292,000 remaining in federal Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) funds, which they will now share with the City of St. Petersburg, in order to help fund its emergency rental program. The funding will also now follow the federal ERAP model, which allows assistance for renters in hotels and motels. “I know this is going to help a lot of people who have been waiting,” said Commissioner René Flowers during the meeting. But there’s a caveat to the assistance. The aid for the non-traditional tenants has a 120-day limit. Bruce Bussey, community development manager for Pinellas County, said that the time limit was put in place to encourage people on non-traditional leases to get signed up for regular leases. “We think by providing this assistance for a short term, people have been paying hotel bills, living in hotels so they can get caught up and they can save for down payment,” Bussey said. “If this program is utilized to pay that short term stay in a hotel, they can then save up and use this program even perhaps to get that more stabilized housing.” But the St. Petersburg Tenants Union (SPTU) said that the limited amount of time for the aid discriminates against people who find it difficult to obtain traditional leases. “It shouldn’t only be limited to 120 days because it’s the most vulnerable people, like people with felonies, people with bad credit, people who can’t get a security deposit, who are

staying at motels and hotels,” Karla Correa, an organizer with SPTU told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. “So only giving them that much time, it’s just like a ticking time bomb. They’re just going to be in the same position in a few months if the county commission doesn’t do anything else.” Correa also pointed out that while the county tried to claim that hotels and motels are transitional housing, many people live in these types of rental agreements for years, as CL wrote about in a story from January. Pinellas County told CL in January that the county wasn’t distributing assistance to nontraditional renters because they want to use the funding to concentrate on traditional tenants. “While [federal] Treasury guidance does allow emergency rental assistance programs to cover hotel or motel costs for eligible households, the Pinellas County ERAP does not cover hotel or motel costs at this time,” Pinellas County’s public information coordinator told CL. “This allows us to focus our ERAP resources on preventing evictions and keeping residents in their homes.” But leading up to the vote today, SPTU had called for the community to email the commissioners to express support for passing the resolution. Following community pressure, the commissioners reversed course from earlier this year and decided to fund non-traditional renters, albeit for a limited amount of time. Across the bay in Hillsborough County, people in non-traditional leases are still being denied assistance, but the county hasn’t confirmed their reasoning behind denying people with non-traditional leases.

The star student journalists definitely took the objective route, but we’re going to just go ahead and point out that humans shouldn’t be invading gators’ space in the first place.

THURSDAY 10

You know what Tom Brady, we’ll give you all the attention you need.

MONDAY 14 DeSantis appoints Esther Byrd, a QAnonadjacent defender of Jan. 6 insurrection, to Florida's Board of Education. Byrd also once petitioned deceased talk show host Rush Limbaugh for books for her local elementary school to be used by students as props for her husband’s state House campaign, so Florida is definitely headed in the right direction.

Tampa’s Best Kept Secret for 40 Years

TUESDAY 15

Human Rights Campaign rejects Disney’s $5 million donation and and issues a blistering statement taking aim at Disney and CEO Chapek for being silent on Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill. Disney responds by suspending political donations, but we all know it’s just a ploy to try and keep allies in their annual passholder pool.

WFLA reports that the Pinellas County Sheriff suspended a deputy after an inmate they were supposed to be watching threw up a bunch of blood in his cell. We know “Love Is Blind” is riveting, but come on, man, that’s way too chill. Shit, but with more Tom Brady, via cltampa. com/news.

Jobsite’s ‘A Clockwork Orange’ still provokes questions about free will. By Jon Palmer Claridge

M

with every imaginable color and texture to suit the locations and dystopian mood swings. Maybe I’m just a cranky boomer, but all I can think about is how inadequate Burgess’s lyrics are when set to the soaring melodies of Beethoven’s 9th. Perhaps it’s the recent death

JOBSITE WELL DONE: Donovan Whitney during a technical rehearsal of ‘A Clockwork Orange.’ of Stephen Sondheim, but I just kept being reminded of how pedestrian the lyrics are even with their music hall style. And, in a week where a ex-cop can by found not guilty by fear of popcorn—which is a reminder of our out of control

weapons of war after Sandy Hook with the massacre of 27 kindergartners? And now, when nearly a decade has passed since that awful day in 2012, the daily news is filled with shocking images of war in Ukraine and Putin threatens a nuclear option? Burgess’ droogs have zero impact. The ethical dilemma for us to ponder is redemption and free will. Does being forced to be good deprive us of humanity? How can we truly be good, unless we have the free choice to be (or actively reject) evil. While Alex and his gang of teenage thugs go through ugly motions, there’s never a real sense of fear, danger, or revulsion for modern crowds. Our culture is so desensitized I’m not even sure how to create an irredeemable monster at the outset, in order for the government ordered aversion therapy to seem justified. And then, of course, the cure has to be as frightening as the disease. Unless the action is genuinely horrific, the point doesn’t land with the dramatic force that the original material demands. Nothing about this very well-intentioned production makes the audience squirm. There are some unpleasant descriptions, but nothing visceral to shock us. “Clockwork” marks Jobsite’s return to the Shimberg Playhouse after being slapped around by the pandemic, so maybe audiences are a bit reluctant, but the material demands in-yourface brutality. This production is a philosophical allegory instead of a punch in the gut. One problem, of course, is that language has almost lost its power to shock. Just after WWII, the word “damn” was enough to induce gasps from an audience. With very few exceptions, it’s hard even to conjure a word that shocks us now. Also, Burgess’s invented language, Nadsat (Russian for ‘teen’) gives his novel raucous and unfamiliar prose in print based on Cockney rhyming slang in addition to the Russian influence. Unfortunately, playgoers don’t have access to the meticulous glossary in the 50th anniversary edition, so it poses a frustrating problem for audiences reliant on hearing instead of print. Kudos, though, to the ensemble which portrays dozens of roles: William Alejandro Barba, Jada Canty, Kiara Flowers, Amanda Heisey, Haley Janeda, Daniel Lennox, Jr., Brianna McVaugh, Omen Thomas Sade, and Jared Sellick. Regardless of my Brechtian failure, producer David Jenkin’s hope “to spark conversations” about free will, mind control and the nature of violence is as inevitable as the sunrise.

“Jobsite’s design team really delivers.”

NED AVERILL-SNELL

uch as “Hamilton” recasts history, Jobsite’s “A Clockwork Orange” is told by a young, energetic cast of mostly 20-somethings flipping the fable’s gender and age politics. Burgess was not happy with the popular 1971 Kubrick film, so 16 years later he penned his own stage adaptation with songs. The idea being a theater of alienation à la Bertolt Brecht in the manner of “Die Dreigroschenoper (The Threepenny Opera).” While pop music might seem the obvious choice for his subversive tale, Burgess considered it “twanging nonsense” and made his protagonist instead a devotee of Beethoven. A projection on Brian Smallheer’s white tile asylum set tells Tampa theatergoers they’ve been transported to the “capital city” in the “near future” of what turns out to be a dismal dystopian England. It’s a darkly comic modern tale of a totalitarian society where violent youths abound. Alex (the charismatic Donovan Whitney) has a passion for classical music and is a member of a vicious, anarchic teen gang of droogs (friends) indulging in orgies fueled by narcotic-spiked milk and gleefully committing random acts of utterly sickening brutality against defenseless citizens. After being caught and imprisoned, Alex opts to undergo state-sponsored psychological “aversion therapy” rehabilitation to reduce his sentence. Burgess’s savage 1962 satire was prophetic, anticipating the hedonistic ‘60s yielding to ‘70s disillusionment. For this intermission-less 85-minute production, Director Dan Granke notes, that the “characters are broad, mostly nameless representations of the state or various ideological state apparatus (the church, the scientific establishment, the elderly, etc.)” This is workable in theory, but underwhelming in practice. The performance style in the intimate Shimberg Playhouse is so broad that it lacks real menace. Despite Brecht’s urging against audience empathy, playgoers inevitably identify with the action. If everything is dramatic, nothing is important. Jobsite’s design team, however, really delivers. Jeremy Douglass provides evocative sound, costumer Katrina Stevenson outfits the ensemble’s many roles distinctly, especially the droogs in colorful leather and circus war paint. The MVP, however, is Jo Averill-Snell who has been given a blank canvas of a set, which she paints

unsolvable gun culture, the threat of juvenile delinquents wielding 1960’s baseballs bats, knives, chains and razors just doesn’t provide the proper nature of threat to an audience in 2022. Plus, the early fights with weapons are cartoonish and lack danger. The later fisticuffs are far more real and visceral. But all this pales when the “equalizer” is now found in the purses of suburban moms or the glove box of a truck that cuts you off in traffic.

The larger issue is how can a play ever shock us with hand combat implements that may have been fearful in 1962, but are timid, even ho hum, in a culture half a century later when Congress lacks the courage even to ban

an he get an encore? Do you want more)? Should we allow him to reintroduce himself? The GOAT seemed to think 40 days of retirement was enough, as he took to Twitter on Sunday to announce his return for a third season as a Tampa Bay Buccaneer (and 23rd in total for his career). Tom Brady’s reasoning: “unfinished business.” “These past two months I’ve realized my place is still on the field and not in the stands. That time will come. But it’s not now. I love my teammates, and I love my supportive family. They make it all possible,” Brady wrote. “I’m coming back for my 23rd season in Tampa. Unfinished business LFG.” If you want to look at that video with Ronaldo he posted Saturday night where the soccer mega star asked if TB12 truly was done with the game, and Brady seemed to give a shrug as evidence of Brady’s indecision about retirement, go ahead. It doesn’t matter. Brady’s back. “Tom Brady loves to play football as much as anyone I have ever been around,” Bucs Head Coach Bruce Arians wrote in a statement. “As Tom said, his place right now is on the football field. He is still playing at a championship level and was as productive as anyone in the league last season. We are ecstatic that he decided to continue playing and working toward winning another championship.” General Manager Jason Licht added. “We said we would leave all options open for him should he

reconsider his retirement and today’s announcement is something we have been preparing for in recent days. Bruce and I have had plenty of conversations with Tom recently that led us to believe there was a realistic chance he would want to come back. Tom is the greatest quarterback of all time who is still playing at an elite level. With this decision now made, we will continue to move forward with our offseason plans to reload this roster for another championship run.” This news opens up so many doors, it’s ridiculous. This might prompt the Bucs to continue the practice of voidable years, pushing their salary cap troubles even more into the future. This might cause veterans that were assumed to be gone like Gronk, edge rusher Jason Pierre-Paul, plus running backs Leonard Fournette and Gio Bernard to agree to one more run with the GOAT. Hell, center Ryan Jensen and cornerback Carlton Davis III said they're gonna run it back. Brady’s return might even open portals Bucs fans never thought possible. Would other talented veterans looking for a ring agree to sign with the Bucs? Man. What a development. From the thought of having to watch Kyle Trask struggle through a season with an average roster around him to Super Bowl contenders again, all within 40 days, all because one man decided he wasn’t done shitting on the NFL. CLASSIC DETECTIVE: ‘The Batman’ is so much more than just a rain-soaked, atmospheric neo-noir.

JONATHAN OLLEY/DC COMICS

Matt Reeves turns in a bleak, brutal and possibly best-ever reimagining of the beloved hero. By John W. Allman

I

f you would have told me way back in 1989 that by the time I was in my early-50’s, there would be eight stand-alone films based on DC Comics’ “Batman,” not to mention two ensemble movies (the abominable “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and even worse “Justice League”), I would have laughed in your face. Now, if you would have told me that in 2022, one of the best movies ever made featuring Batman would arrive starring none other than sparkle-fanged Robert Pattinson as the caped crusader/Bruce Wayne, I might have swung on you, just because. And, yet, here we are. Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” is hands-down one of the Top 3 best Batman movies ever made, standing shoulder to shoulder with Tim Burton’s “Batman Returns” and Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight.” No one is more shocked than me, and truth be told, this might just be my overall favorite in terms of pure storytelling. “The Batman” is like watching a classic issue of “Detective Comics “come to life.

40 | MARCH 17 - 23, 2022 | cltampa.com

The reality, though, is that “The Batman” is so much more than just a rain-soaked, atmospheric neo-noir. For one, it’s the longest movie ever made starring Batman, clocking in at 175 minutes, or roughly three solid hours (and no, I’m not counting the bloated “Zack Snyder’s Justice League”). For another, the cast is pitch-perfect across the board, from Jeffrey Wright’s James Gordon, who plays the perfect Murtaugh to Pattinson’s unhinged Riggs, to an unrecognizable Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot and a chillingly good John Turturro as Carmine Falcone. It’s true that Zoë Kravitz will never replace Michelle Pfeiffer, but her Selena Kyle is just as memorable, and her Catwoman is much more grounded. But the two standouts here are Paul Dano, who succeeds in making The Riddler a truly menacing and diabolical villain, despite rarely showing his face until late in the third act, and Pattinson, who makes for the most relatable billionaire vigilante we’ve ever seen.

Seriously, and I say this as someone who a Nirvana earworm that will rattle in your didn’t care to consider Pattinson as an actual noggin for days. actor until 2019’s “The Lighthouse,” I can’t As the conductor of Batman’s rage and think of anyone who’s done a better job beneath Gotham City’s undoing, writer-director Reeves the cowl (which is what matters because Bruce proves why he’s never to be underestimated. Blood, Sweat, and Tears If you get annoyed by the bagpipes and Irish razzmatazz involved with St. Paddy’s, here’s a chance for you to catch some jazz-rock instead. BST is down to one original member, Bobby Colomby, but even with an eight-piece band composed of a new generation of musicians, it still feels like the ‘70s when the band is in the room. For the first time since its gig at Clearwater Jazz Holiday 2019, Blood, Sweat, and Tears will take on the older hits at Mahaffey Theater this week, with no opening act beside it. If you miss this one, the band behind “Spinning Wheel” will be back in Florida come May as part of Epcot’s Garden Rocks Concert Series in Orlando. (Mahaffey Theater, St. Petersburg) C Greensky Bluegrass w/John Craigie Did you miss the green river last weekend? How about a Greensky instead? The band of Michiganders is the most electric bluegrass band you’ll ever see, assuming you think Greensky belongs in that genre. There are undoubtedly twangy acoustic instruments involved, but if you see some of the names the band has collaborated with, you’ll expect electrifying scenery. As for John Craigie— who opens the show—the spirit of early protest-folk musicians lives on in the L.A. born troubadour. Pete Seeger is gone and you’ll probably never see a Guthrie onstage again, so perhaps we need Craigie now more than ever. (Jannus Live, St. Petersburg)

Reggae on the WTR: One Love Rising Can’t make it to the Reggae Rise Up Music Festival? Lucky for you, WTR is continuing its monthlong “Reggae on the Water” series, just off the Courtney Campbell Causeway this weekend, and for the rest of the month. While some will be capping off their workweek with Rebelution at Vinoy Park, former members of Ybor City’s legendary Positivity Band from the early aughts will come together to showcase One Love Rising over the Courtney Campbell Causeway. OK, it may not be as big as, say, a Marley, but you’d be supporting local artists, and that’s pretty massive on its own. (WTR Pool, Tampa) C Reggae Rise Up: Rebelution w/ Slightly Stoopid/Iration/Soja/ Atmosphere/Shaggy/Steel Pulse/The Green/Protoje/Pepper/Tribal Seeds/ more Tampa Bay’s favorite reggae gettogether is back, and though it’s not a four-day festival like last year. The eighth annual festival promises to give fans their money’s worth over the long weekend. On Friday, Rebelution headlines for Soja and Bumpin’ Uglies. Slightly Stoopid, Iya Terra, and Tropidelic are featured Saturday. As for Sunday, you’d think that Shaggy would

be enough until you see that Iration is the actual headliner, and not the former Sting collaborator. So if you’re not going to Innings Festival on the other side of Tampa Bay this year, don’t miss this one. (Vinoy Park, St. Petersburg)

C Innings Festival: Green Day w/ Incubus/311/Jimmy Eat World/Highly Suspect/Wolf Alice/David Duchovny/The Beaches/We Are Scientists/Liz Cooper/ more As much as we adore Gasparilla Music Festival, the Tampa Bay installment of Innings—previously only available in Arizona—is one of, if not, the biggest (albeit corporate) festival that we’ve seen in ages. If you missed the Hella Mega Tour’s stops in Miami and Jacksonville last summer, Green Day headlines on Saturday, along with 311, Jimmy Eat World, and Wolf Alice, just to name a few. On Sunday, if you’re more of an Americana person–and are still saddened about Lumineers outright canceling its 2020 tour–you can catch the band behind “Donna,” as well as Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, Goo Goo Dolls, and Skip Marley. You’d be a goddamn fool to miss Liz Cooper tear up the opening frame on Sunday, too. Tickets are still available, but start at $100; just like with your car and house, you can pay your ticket off with a payment plan. Read more about the C3/Live Nation game plan for Innings on p. 45. (South Lot at Raymond James Stadium, Tampa)

C Walled City w/Articles/Spanish Needles In 2022, it seems that the least problematic pop punk bands are the ones that haven’t reached superstar status. One of those bands without a history of sexual harassment accusations against it (lookin’ at you, All Time Low, Bright Eyes, etc.) is Gainesville’s Articles, which describes itself as a band that “plays songs that sound like you just worked a 40-hour week and want to cry into $5 margaritas.” St. Pete favorites Spanish Needles and Walled City open the show. (If I Brewed The World, St. Petersburg)

Valspar Live : Chris Young w/Big & Rich Remember when Tiger Woods made a comeback at Valspar in 2018? We do, and we also remember that the free concert for Valspar attendees was headlined by Jake Owen and Dustin Lynch. Toby Keith has also headlined “Valspar Live” in the past, and this year, Chris Young, along with cowboy duo Big & Rich co-headline the shindig that’s free with admission to the tournament. It’s unclear what Valspar’s obsession with country music is, but considering the hype behind Valspar, you’d think that they’d at least get somebody with the legendary status of Hank Williams II or George Strait. Hell, even countryera Steven Tyler would be unforgettable. (Innisbrook Resort, Palm Harbor)

Mayhem w/Midnight There was a time where you may have feared for your life while attending a Mayhem concert. Now that pieceof-shit bassist Count Grishnackh is out of the band (he admitted to plotting a murder of a former bandmate), Necrobutcher is carrying on the Mayhem torch as the only founding member still with the black metal band. It’s been seven years since it’s been to Tampa Bay, and at Orpheum no less. This weekend, the band returns to the same location for possibly the last time as the Ybor City venue recently announced plans to move out of the historic district. Sadly, Swedish black metal band Watain was forced off the bill due to Visa issues. (Orpheum, Ybor City)

Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons It hasn’t been an easy pandemic for Valli. Original Four Season Tommy DeVito succumbed to COVID-19 in 2020, and late last year, the 87-year-old Jersey boy was down with a bout of pneumonia. He’s all healed up, but perhaps we should have listened when he told us to hang onto what we’ve got. After many postponements going back to 2020, The Four Seasons, circa 2022, play two nights in Clearwater this weekend, adding to the band’s record of “most played shows at Ruth Eckerd Hall.” For Frankie’s 30th performance there in 2018, at-the-time Clearwater mayor George Cretekos presented him with a key to the city, and “Peppermint Twist” singer Joey Dee was in the crowd. Yeah, he’s kind of a legend. (Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater)

styles, its latest album, I Feel Safe With You, Trash continues on the tradition of sounding like Brian Wilson’s newer material, just with more electronic beats. Being from the Peach State, Kevin Barnes and friends are not unfamiliar with Florida, having last performed in Tampa Bay in 2019, over at Orpheum. Three years later, of Montreal is shaking it up a bit by stopping into Crowbar for the first time since 2015. Locate S,1 and Charles Irwin—back home after a short Northeast tour—open the show. C Shuffle 4th Anniversary: K.III w/ Katara/Non-Fiction/Zeta the Babe/ DJ Wally Rios/more Everyone’s favorite vagaina-forward combo bar-restaurantmusic-venue-shuffleboard facility has made it four years in Tampa Heights, which is an achievement considering the state the world is in. To celebrate, co-founders Danielle O’Connor and Jennifer Evanchyk are welcoming not just regulars, but regular performers from the Shuffle stage to play a no-cover concert that starts at noon. Highlights include jazz collective Katara, singer-saxophonist Zeta the Babe, and Tampa rapper K.III (who just released his debut album) who all play in between selections from DJ Wally Rios who normally picks the tunes for the spot’s Wu-Tang brunch. Lounge along with a dozen bands including Pete-based rock duo New Brutarians which unabashedly takes after Def Leppard. Its logo is the same style and font, and the duo’s forthcoming album is even titled Hysteria. “I’m going to milk it for a ton of singles. I’m going to load with unreleased bonus tracks, just like Def Leppard in the 80s,” lead vocalist Adam Turkel told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. The new album—like much of the Brutarians’ work—will sound just like a record straight outta the ‘70s, but not in a has-been way. (Train Depot and Neptune Lounge, downtown Tarpon Springs) C Tyler, the Creator w/Kali Uchis/Vince Staples/Teezo Tyler—touring behind a new album Call Me If You Get Lost—was last in town in November 2019 when he supported his masterpiece full-length, Igor. That tour saw roughly 6,000 fans singing along to every word and even prompted late Tampa hip-hop legend Shock G to seek Tyler out after the show. Staples was last in Tampa when he headlined The Ritz in Ybor City in February 2019. (Yuengling Center, Tampa)

The English Beat Last year, new wave ska band The English Beat was supposed to do a co-headlining tour with The Fixx and stop at the Cap in downtown Clearwater. For reasons unknown, the Beat pulled out weeks beforehand, and was replaced by Texas-based Fastball, moving The Fixx up to the headlining spot. Luckily, fans of the band that gave them the widely-associatedwith-Ferris-Bueller song “March of the Swivel Heads” have a chance for redemption. No support will be present, and with most of the original lineup dead, there hasn’t been any new music from The Beat in over 40 years. (Bilheimer Capitol Theatre, Clearwater)

C Charley Crockett w/Vincent Neil Emerson When it comes to country music, few names elicit the kind of excitement

LYZA RENEE

Jukebox Charley does. Armed with a classic country sound and a big voice that could blanket the south, the 38-year-old descendent of Davy is a road-tested and fast-rising songwriter who had a busy 2021 that saw him release two albums—10 For Slim: Charley Crockett Sings James Hand and Music City USA—as a follow up to his acclaimed 2020 release Welcome To Hard Times. The show, as far as we can tell is Crockett’s Tampa debut, and should be a fine intro to one of America’s finest purveyors of country that also touches R&B, soul, Cajun and western swing. Fellow Texas songwriter Vincent Neil Emerson will open. In a market rife with blasé pop-country concerts, this injection of real, juke joint ready country (happening in Tampa Bay’s most picturesque venues) is a contender for can’t miss show of the year. (Tampa Theatre, Tampa) Richard Marx Of course Marx is still doing things! How could you question whether or not he has retired like that? He appeared on “The Goldbergs’’ landmark 200th episode this month, and the 58-year-old heartthrob

of the ‘80s has not put “Right Here Waiting” and “Don’t Mean Nothing” behind him. Plus there’s a new album and autobiography out, both of which dropped this decade. No matter which era you’re a fan of, Marx will be bringing all of them next week. (Bilheimer Capitol Theatre, Clearwater)

C Baby Keem Kendrick Lamar’s cousin isn’t new to the hip-hop scene, but after dropping his debut album last fall, Baby Keem very well may hit the same “hip-hop’s Bob Dylan” status that Kenny did. He turned 21 in October, and just embarked on his first full-fledged U.S. tour, which kicked off in Cincinnati. Keem (who appears on Kanya’s Donda 2) is making his debut Tampa Bay area appearance next week, and not counting resale tickets, the show is sold out—to the surprise of nobody. If you can’t make St. Pete on a Wednesday night, he’ll be in Orlando the night before, and Ft. Lauderdale on Thursday. (Jannus Live, St. Petersburg)

A little bit of “Kyoto” is coming to Ybor City, care of Grammy-nominated indie-rock superstar and Saddest Factory label head Phoebe Bridgers, who’s booked a show at the Cuban Club this summer. By the looks of online inventory, tickets to see Bridgers play the Cuban Club in Tampa, Florida on May 24 are already sold out. The tour’s only other Florida date is on May 25 at the St. Augustine Amphitheater, which has a capacity just north of 4,000. It’s safe to say that the Cuban Club courtyard can hold about 4,000 people, too, twice the size of Jannus Live. Tampa’s Yuengling Center holds just under 5,000 for most of its soldout concerts, but the 27-year-old Los Angeles

Bridgers—who accepted Billboard’s Trailblazer Award at this month’s Billboard Women in Music Awards—has not played Tampa since a 2017 set at Gasparilla Music Festival, before her critically acclaimed debut full-length Stranger In the Alps dropped that year ahead of a 2020 followup, Punisher, that landed the Los Angeles songwriter four Grammy nominations. The booking at Cuban Club is fitting as the venue is probably one of the most haunted places in Tampa. “I assure you there is tons of death on [her debut full-length], it’s like having people reading my diary,” Bridgers told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay in a 2017 interview where she also requested to know the location of Tampa’s carny cemetery. “You should definitely Tweet the cemetery to me because that would be the most goth tweet ever and I would definitely go,” Bridgers added. Well, Showmen’s Rest is on the north end of Tampa Heights’ Oaklawn Cemetery, on the corner of N Boulevard and W Indiana Avenue—just two-and-half miles from the venue.

Age against the machine I’m a 60-something cis woman with a 30-something cis man lover. The problem is my vagina is extremely tight. Also, sometimes I bleed a little bit after PIV and then urinating burns, but only briefly. We are only able to hook-up about every other week, so frequency isn’t going to “stretch me out.” I had previously been diagnosed with vaginal atrophy, which for many women can result in pain during PIV intercourse. We’ve been using Uberlube with silicone, which has helped but it still gets painful. Any suggestions? I’ve been on an estradiol vaginal insert for three months, which helps my overall dryness but not PIV so much, although he has said I feel softer inside. I could really use some help because as much as I love having sex with him, I’m going to have to pause PIV altogether due to my discomfort. I also will say that before him it had been 17 years since I’d had sex. I find this embarrassing to admit, but it may be information that will help you answer my questions.—Age-Gap Enhancing Intense Sexual Treats “Vaginal atrophy is very common in women and people with vaginas, and it can make not just PIV but any type of penetration painful,” said Dr. Lori Brotto, a clinical psychologist, author, and sex researcher at the University of British Columbia. “And while Uberlube is a fantastic external lubricant that makes sex more comfortable, it does nothing to moisturize the vagina.” Dr. Brotto says your hunch—that more frequent penetration might help—is correct, but you don’t have to wait for your lover to return to experience it. “There are well-known advantages to regular vaginal dilation for people who have not had penetration in a long time,” said Dr. Brotto. “So, I would recommend that in between the times AGEIST has sex with her partner, she uses a dilator—or uses a dildo—to engage in solo vaginal penetration. She should do it at least once per week, with copious amounts of lubricant, and use it while fantasizing or enjoying erotica, to stimulate her mind’s arousal.” You don’t have to simulate fucking with a dilator or a dildo (and a dilator in this case is just a dildo by another name); instead, gently insert the lubed-up dilator, remember to breathe, and then—once it’s all the way in—read some erotica or watch some porn. And then, if you’re feeling it, masturbate to climax. And then, when you’re with your lover, do the same but with his dick. Get his P in your V without it being about his pleasure. It’s about yours. When you do feel ready to let him fuck you, don’t feel obligated to endure it until he finishes. Only let him fuck you for as long as it feels comfortable and/or good for you, and then pivot to something else you both enjoy if he hasn’t finished.

Dr. Brotto also suggested that you talk to your gynecologist about switching to a different vaginal estrogen delivery system—there are tablets, creams, and rings in addition to the inserts you’re using—while at the same time adjusting your dose. “She also might also consider seeing a pelvic floor physiotherapist in case some of the discomfort is arising from pelvic floor tightness,” said Dr. Brotto. “Pelvic floor physiotherapists have very effective exercises to deal with vaginal pain. Additionally, some positions can create more pain in an already painful vagina, so AGEIST and her lover should try different positions. And since the length and girth of a partner’s penis can also be a contributing factor, some couples use OhNut (ohnut.co), which are a series of rings that can be placed at the base of the shaft of the penis to reduce the length.” It’s also important that you’re feeling aroused—not feeling dread—when your lover is on his way over. Knowing you can look forward to what works for you and makes you feel good, and knowing that he doesn’t expect you to grin and bear what doesn’t (even if that means taking PIV off the menu for now), will not only be the best way to make sure you feel relaxed and aroused, but it’s also the quickest way to get PIV back on the menu. Good luck. Follow @DrLoriBrotto on Twitter. And you can see Dr. Brotto in the new Netflix docuseries, ”The Principles of Pleasure,” which premieres on March 22. (The first episode focuses on the erogenous parts of a woman’s anatomy, AGEIST, and Dr. Brotto suggests you watch it with your partner!)

without him ignoring me indefinitely, and even though it’s always been this way, it still hurts. Months of silence for something that wasn’t even a full-on argument seems extreme, and I have no idea why he does this. I’m just trying to figure him out.—Infuriatingly Mysterious Silences After Disagreements You can’t make a long-term relationship work with someone who responds to routine conflict— the kind of conflicts you’ll face almost daily in any relationship lasting longer than a weekend—with months of the silent treatment. Well, maybe a person can make a relationship with someone like that work; you’ve been making this work for 20 years, IMSAD. You’re wasting a lot of time and emotional energy trying to figure out a guy who really isn’t that hard to figure out. I mean, the Nancy Drew novelization of this mystery would have just one page, IMSAD, and it would be the title page: “The Not At All Mysterious Case of the On-Again, OffAgain Boyfriend Who Is an Asshole and Whose Number You Should Block and Delete.” So, stop calling this asshole, stop sitting by the phone waiting for this asshole to call you, stop fucking this asshole when he shows up, stop thinking about fucking this asshole when he’s off sulking and/or fucking someone else. The effort you’re putting into making this relationship work would be much better spent trying to find a guy who isn’t an asshole and who shares your kinks.

SAVAGE LOVE

I’ve been dating the same guy on-and-off for 20 years. I met him in my 20s, I’m now in my 40s. Even though we’re nothing alike—I’m kinky and adventurous, he’s vanilla and extremely vanilla— we always come back together. The problem is, any time we have the slightest disagreement, he stops talking to me, usually for weeks, sometimes for months. The last time it happened was when I moved a year ago. He was helping but he snapped at me because he didn’t hear my directions, and I got upset. He didn’t speak to me for 11 months! I reached out to him repeatedly, but he only responded recently. So, we made plans to meet. But when I call him to ask when he’s picking me up, he says, “I forgot I had other plans tonight”! It’s an event I’m not allowed to attend, because “he’ll be working,” but his ex-girlfriend is coming. It’s fine for her to be there, but not me, the person he’s known for 20 years! I got mad, of course, and asked him to call me after the event. And he didn’t. I can’t show any disapproval

My boyfriend and I have been together for six years. We have a great relationship, and I think we’re very compatible. I’m in my late 30s now, and I’m starting to realize that time is running out if I ever want a baby, but my boyfriend is 30 years older than me. If he were 45, he would be a great dad, but it doesn’t seem fair to have a child with a man who is almost 70. He doesn’t have children

from his previous marriage so this would be his first. Should I let go of the man I love to see what else is out there and find someone more suited to a future that hopefully includes a child? Or do I take the plunge with my boyfriend and hope for the best?—Tick Tock Bio Clock Let’s say dump the old man you love—an old man who could live for another 20 years—to go find a younger man. How long would that take, TTBC? A year? Two? Because it’s not just a guy closer to your own age you need. You have to find a guy you like, a guy who wants children and wants them soon, and then date that guy long enough to fall in love with him. And then you’re going to have to live with that guy long enough to know you aren’t going to fall out of love with him anytime soon. And if it doesn’t work out—if the first guy you pick isn’t the right guy—you’re gonna have to start all over again. And before you know it, TTBC, you’re 50. As I see it, TTBC, you have three possible choices/likely outcomes to choose from here: having to get out there and find a new guy who wants a kid, having to date as a widowed single parent if your current boyfriend dies while your child is still young, or having to date as a single parent if the relationship you rushed into with some 30-something dude you barely knew after dumping the 60-something man you loved didn’t work out. In your shoes, TTBC, I would go with the guy I’ve got—the known quantity—over a stranger I hadn’t met, might never meet, or might come to regret meeting. P.S. You don’t mention discussing this with your boyfriend. Does he wanna have a child? That seems… germane.
