ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Engineering technologists focus on the implementation and real-life application of engineering solutions and designs.

Technologists apply their knowledge of math, science, engineering, and technology in technical tasks. They often work in teams to implement or identify solutions.

Graduates of ETSU’s Engineering Technology program may work in any number of settings or industries. They are needed by large and small businesses, in health care, and by local, state, and governmental agencies.

Technologists can use their skills in laboratories, on construction sites, in manufacturing plants, and in hospitals.

ETSU offers six concentrations in the Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology: Biomedical Construction Electronics Industrial Manufacturing Product Development

WHY ETSU? The Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology—Biomedical, Construction, Electronics, and Manufacturing concentrations are accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET, the Accrediting Board for Engineeringand Technology, www.abet.org.

ABET is the premier accrediting organization of applied science, computing, engineering and engineering technology programs in the United States.

Students in the program often participate in internship and co-op opportunities with industry professionals to gain handson learning experience.

CONCENTRATIONS CONSTRUCTION The Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology—Construction concentration is designed to prepare students with the professional skills needed for the complexities in today’s construction industry.

Coursework in the major focuses on planning, design, construction, and management of infrastructures, including buildings, roads, highways, dams, bridges, and utilities.

The construction concentration is designed to provide students with understanding and experience in five major construction areas: • Management / Supervision • Accounting / Cost Control • Field Engineering • Design • Material Testing This program prepares students for employment in careers such as field engineers, inspectors, superintendents, resident project representatives, project engineers, project managers, sales representatives, estimators, schedulers, designers, and land developers.

INDUSTRIAL Industrial technology focuses on the management, operation, and maintenance of complex technical systems. The Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology—Industrial concentration prepares students to solve managerial, technical, and production problems in business, industry, education, and government settings.

Graduates of the program are often employed as production supervisors, quality systems managers, and technical specialists.

Others pursue positions in industrial and technical sales, design, and testing.

BIOMEDICAL The Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology—Biomedical concentration is designed to prepare technologists for work in health care settings.

Biomedical engineering technologists often work on a health care team to ensure safe and effective use of medical instruments and equipment for diagnostic imaging, surgery, cardiology, respiratory, trauma, and emergency facilities.

Students in this program receive technical instruction in • Inspection, performance testing, and calibration of equipment • Instruction, consultation, and medical staff assistance • Equipment installation and modification • Preventive maintenance • Equipment repair • Management

ELECTRONICS The Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology—Electronics concentration combines scientific and engineering knowledge and methods into technical classes to provide students the knowledge base to support engineering activities.

An electronic engineering technologist is a person who is knowledgeable in electronics theory and design and who understands state-of-the-art practices related to digital and analog circuits and systems, controls/ automation, robotics, instrumentation, and communications. Students in this program complete extensive lab work, preparing them with skills needed in many industrial and manufacturing settings.

MANUFACTURING Manufacturing engineering technologists work in teams to develop tools, processes, machines, and equipment to make quality products at a reasonable cost. Students in ETSU’s Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology— Manufacturing concentration are taught about advanced machine vision systems, developing tooling for robotics, plant layout and materials handling, and more.

Our students work on optimizing CNC milling processes, ergonomics, advanced motors concepts, quality control concepts, project scheduling and other key areas in use in the manufacturing industry. This program prepares students to enter the world of the advanced manufacturing facility; it provides the background needed to support students in the making of quality products while optimizing the approach to production.

Students in the manufacturing program learn in a laboratory based environment where robotic cells, advanced motor test benches, CNC labs, and solid modeling projects are a few of the hands on lab areas students will encounter. The manufacturing concentration area provides students many employment and internship opportunities in the widely varied world of manufacturing.

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT The Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology—Product Development concentration is a multidisciplinary, manufacturing-based curriculum designed to educate and prepare students to be multifunctional, creative, and knowledgeable leaders and participants of product design teams.

Taking New Products From Concept to Market Students in this program develop skills to help solve the myriad of problems associated with taking a product from conception through design, prototyping, testing and tooling, and into production. Graduates gain fundamental technical knowledge and also an understanding of the tools, techniques, and processes commonly used throughout industry to rapidly take new products from concept to market including visualization, computer-aided design (CAD), computernumerical control (CNC), 3D printing, and model building.

COMMON CAREER PATHS Our graduates have been employed throughout the region in a variety of engineering roles. Employers include Alemite LLC., Borla Performance Products, Domtar, Eastman Chemical, General Shale, Mountain States Health Alliance, Proterra, Siemens, and many others.
