La ingeniería es un ámbito del conocimiento que, como muchos otros, no tiene género pues se trata de la aplicación del pensamiento a producir soluciones a distintas cuestiones que no quedan ligadas ni identificadas por su procedencia.

Engineering is a field of knowledge which, like many others, is genderless, as it involves the application of thought to provide solutions for different matters that are not linked to or identified by such assumption/provenance.

Sin embargo es un hecho, que el ejercicio profesional sí lo tiene.

Por ello, nos ha parecido importante y una contribución positiva, sumarnos a dar visibilidad a este perfil profesional que es parte de nuestro centro y que recoge tantas experiencias interesantes.

However, it is a fact that the practice of this profession is influenced by gender. Thus, it seemed important to us, and that it makes a positive contribution, to join the effort to provide greater visibility for this professional profile which is a part of our institution and which encompasses so many interesting experiences.

Esta exposición muestra el trabajo de unas jóvenes que se han formado en la ETSID en la última década y que muestran su experiencia desde un perfil competitivo y contemporáneo. Como decía Leonardo da Vinci “estudia primero la ciencia y luego la práctica que nace de esa ciencia” y eso es lo que caracteriza la práctica del diseño en nuestros días.

This exhibition showcases the work of some young women who were educated at ETSID over the last decade, and outlines their experience from a competitive and contemporary profile. As Leonardo da Vinci said “first study the science, and then practice the art which is born of that science” and that is what characterizes the practice of design at present.

La Cátedra Stadler desde su arranque en la Universitat Politècnica de València viene asumiendo el compromiso con la igualdad de la mujer en todas sus facetas. Así por ejemplo, organiza y patrocina jornadas y conferencias, en el contexto universitario, para visualizar y promover el papel de la mujer en los campos de la ciencia y la tecnología. Ejemplos de ello son la conferencia “Mujeres en STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)“, que se celebró en septiembre de 2015 en la ETSID o el patrocinio del evento Women in Science (WiS) con motivo del EURO 2018 en el Salón Nexus de la UPV. Stadler es un fabricante internacional de vehículos ferroviarios con sede en Suiza y más de 8.500 empleados. Stadler Valencia diseña y fabrica locomotoras y vehículos ferroviarios de pasajeros para cualquier parte del mundo.

La empresa cuenta con un Plan de Igualdad con acciones programadas anualmente. El departamento de ingeniería de Stadler, con más de 200 ingenieros/as dedicados al diseño y desarrollo de vehículos ferroviarios, cuenta con algo más del 20% de mujeres ingenieras, una cifra que va en aumento año tras año y que se va acercando al porcentaje de mujeres estudiantes en las ingenierías de la UPV. En esta ocasión, la cátedra Stadler patrocina esta exposición “Jóvenes Ingenieras en Diseño”, en el Hall de la ETSID, dando soporte a este catálogo que favorece la visibilidad de las Ingenieras en Diseño y que muestra, a todos los efectos, un ámbito como tantos otros para las mujeres, con futuro y proyección profesional internacional.

Since it was established at the Universitat Politècnica de València, the Stadler Chair has pledged a commitment to the equality of women in all areas. Thus for example, it organizes and sponsors open days and conferences, within the university setting, to promote and offer greater visibility to the role of women within the fields of science and technology. Examples of this are the conference entitled “Women in STEM” (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), which took place in September 2015 at the ETSID and the sponsorship of the event Women in Science (WiS) to mark

the EURO 2018 at the UPV’s Nexus Salon.

Stadler is an international manufacturer of rail vehicles, with headquarters in Switzerland, and it has more than 8,500 employees.

Stadler Valencia designs and manufactures locomotives and passenger rail vehicles for anywhere in the world.

The company has an Equality Plan with events scheduled annually.

Stadler´s engineering department, with more than 200 male and female engineers devoted to the design and development of rail vehicles, has little over 20% women engineers, a figure that is rising year after year and that is gradually approaching the percentage of women who study engineering at the UPV. On this occasion, the Stadler chair is sponsoring this exhibition “Young Women Engineers in Design”, in the Hall of the ETSID, offering support to this catalogue that promotes the visibility of Women Engineers in Design, and showcases a sector, like so many others, where women have a bright future and international professional projection.

La ingeniería es un ámbito del conocimiento que, como muchos otros, no tiene género pues se trata de la aplicación del pensamiento a producir soluciones a distintas cuestiones que no quedan ligadas ni identificadas por su procedencia. En el caso de la Ingeniería en Diseño el pensamiento se centra en desarrollar proyectos capaces de resolver aspectos funcionales concretándolos en formas que ni más ni menos, constituyen el ambiente material y comunicativo que nos rodea. Según el ICSID Internacional Council of Societies of Industrial Design, el diseño constituye un factor esencial en la humanización innovadora de tecnologías y un factor crucial de intercambio económico y cultural. Parte de los logros de nuestra sociedad lo constituye su cultura material, los diferentes productos y servicios que disfrutamos en la actualidad que fueron concebidos y plasmados por los diseñadores en una realidad.

Es evidente en el momento actual que entre las ingenierías de la rama industrial, el diseño está en su sitio aunque encuentre dificultades en su definición y en la delimitación de sus competencias. El diseño integra la técnica y la tecnología en elementos seductores y manejables por los usuarios. Cualidades únicas que fácilmente identificamos cuando vemos los proyectos: Sensibilidad, Ingenio y Tecnología que se unen con una dosis de creatividad para producir soluciones de valor. Se trata de proyectar elementos o realidades de validez y coherencia estética y para eso, en contra de lo que sucede en otros campos de la ingeniería, no existen recetas y es por ello que esta ingeniería se aproxima en su quehacer a una práctica de índole artística. En este sentido, la filósofa Jeanne Hersch decía que “el arte subsiste en la medida en que la receta fracasa” y es por eso las soluciones estéticas son únicas por su coherencia y su transformación de objeto en sujeto y difíciles de cuantificar. El experto en investigación en diseño Gui Bonsiepe en los años sesenta apuntaba que […] La apariencia del valor de uso constituye una co-realidad irrenunciable, esencial, del valor de uso y no un forro o añadido que se pueda liquidar a placer (…) El diseñador industrial tiene un rol fundamental en la definición de los productos y servicios pues determina una específica modalidad de la relación hombre y la naturaleza determinante en la formación del ambiente material. […] Su intervención en la cultura material se concreta en aquellos productos que el usuario experimenta de forma directa en la vida cotidiana.

En este orden de cosas, el desarrollo tecnológico de las dos últimas décadas y los efectos medioambientales de la sociedad de consumo, requieren de la visión de la ingeniería que aporta metodologías de análisis, dominio de procesos industriales y materiales que permiten conducir el proyecto de diseño de modo menos especulativo y original, pero de modo más crítico y sostenible . El Grado en Ingeniería en Diseño Industrial y Desarrollo de Productos (GIDIyDP) que se imparte en la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería del Diseño (ETSID) de la Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) proporciona una formación científica y técnica en competencias para dirigir y gestionar todo el proceso de vida de un producto desde la generación de ideas (análisis de mercados, diseño básico y conceptual...) pasando por la producción, la fabricación, el lanzamiento del producto y su impacto ambiental.

No obstante es un hecho, que el ejercicio profesional para las mujeres muestra ciertas diferencias que en el ámbito de la ingeniería, se acentúan y merecen una reflexión. Es por ello que nos ha parecido importante y una contribución positiva, sumarnos a dar visibilidad a este perfil profesional que es parte de nuestro centro y que recoge múltiples experiencias interesantes.

El artículo “La ingeniería, unos estudios y una profesión también para las mujeres” de Mónica Ramírez resume algunos aspectos sobre esta cuestión que interesa conocer. Según los datos del Ministerio de Educación en los estudios de bachillerato científico y tecnológico el número de estudiantes femeninas es menor que en el humanístico y sin embargo, consiguen mejores calificaciones en sus medias que los chicos en este nivel educativo.

También se observa que aunque las mujeres son mayoría en la actualidad en los estudios universitarios en España, menos del 25% cursan las ramas de Arquitectura e Ingeniería pese a que la rama industrial parece que tiene más oportunidades en el mercado laboral. En general los ámbitos denominados STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subrayan la escasa presencia y participación activa de las mujeres y ello a pesar de los buenos resultados que obtienen en los estudios de ingeniería donde incluso, superan ligeramente los de los egresados en datos de 2014 (Fuente: MECD). ¿Por qué no cursan las mujeres las ramas científico técnicas? Son muchos los aspectos que pueden influir en esta cuestión. Puede

que la imagen de las ingenierías no resulte motivadora, que sea una consecuencia de la escasa presencia de la tecnología en edades tempranas y mostrada como un área masculina de menor interés para las niñas, la diferencia salarial entre los ingenieros y las ingenieras en el ejercicio de las mismas tareas o, que el porcentaje de mujeres en puestos de responsabilidad sea menor en las empresas cotizadas… Poco referentes femeninos, ausencia de roles y el entorno familiar, social y educativo son aspectos que no incentivan del mismo modo los logros femeninos en cuanto a carreras técnicas y científicas son explicaciones relativas a la ausencia de estas vocaciones.

Lo cierto es que sigue habiendo una presencia insuficiente de ingenieras y que se progresa poco o muy lentamente, en la superación de estereotipos culturales anticuados cuando es sobradamente reconocida la capacidad de las mujeres, su visión integral en la gestión de las emociones y en la dirección de equipos de trabajo.

Esta exposición muestra el trabajo de unas jóvenes que se formaron en la ETSID en la última década y que muestran su experiencia desde un perfil competitivo y contemporáneo. La perspectiva de la ingeniería en diseño focaliza determinados aspectos que identifican este perfil y le confieren aptitudes técnicas particularmente significativas en el contexto de la sociedad del post-consumo y el desarrollo tecnológico. Como decía Leonardo da Vinci “estudia primero la ciencia y luego la práctica que nace de esa ciencia” y eso es lo que caracteriza la práctica del diseño en nuestros días.

ENGINEERING AND DESIGN Engineering is a field of knowledge which, like many others, is genderless as it involves the application of thought to provide solutions for different matters that are not linked to or identified by their provenance. In the case of Design Engineering, the thought is focused on developing projects that are able to solve functional aspects, embodying them in forms that do nothing less than constitute the material and communicative environment around us. According to the ICSID International Council of Societies of Industrial Design, design constitutes an essential factor in the innovative humanization of technologies, and is a crucial factor in economic and cultural exchange. Part of the achievements of our society lies on its material culture, the different products and services we currently enjoy which were devised by designers and made into a reality.

At present it is clear, that among the engineering branches found in the industrial sector, design has its place, although there are some difficulties regarding its definition and the delimitation of its competences. Design integrates technique and technology to make them into seductive elements that are easily handled by users. Unique qualities that we can easily identify when we see the projects are Sensitivity, Inventiveness and Technology, which combine with an element of creativity to produce valuable solutions. It is a question of designing elements or realities which are valid and aesthetically sound, and to do so—contrary to what happens in other fields of engineering—there are no recipes. Thus, the task of this form of engineering is close to an art practice. In this regard, the philosopher Jeanne Hersch said that “art survives insofar as the recipe fails”, and that is why aesthetic solutions are unique due to their coherence and their transformation from object into subject, and they are difficult to quantify. During the 1960s, the expert in design research Gui Bonsiepe stated that […] The appearance of the value of use constitutes an undeniable, essential co-reality, of the value of use and not a lining or an addition that can be eliminated as you please (…) Industrial designers play a crucial role in the definition of products and services, as they determine a specific type of relationship between man and nature which is decisive in the formation of the material environment. […] Their participation in material culture is embodied in the products that the user experiences directly in daily life.

In this context, the technological development of the last two decades and the environmental effects of consumer society, require a vision of engineering that provides analysis methods, the mastery of industrial processes, and materials which make it possible to manage the design project in a less speculative and original way, but in a more critical and sustainable way . The Engineering Degree in Industrial Design and Product Development (GIDIyDP) that is taught at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería del Diseño (ETSID) at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) provides scientific and technical training in skills for directing and managing the entire life process of a product, from generating ideas (market analysis, basic and conceptual design...) to producing, manufacturing, launching the product, and its environmental impact.

However, it is a fact that for women, the professional practice presents certain differences and, within the field of engineering, they are accentuated and deserve some thought. This is why it seemed important to us, and a positive contribution, to join the effort to provide greater visibility for this professional profile which is a part of our institution and encompasses many interesting experiences.

The article “Engineering: a degree and a profession that is also for women”, by Mónica Ramírez, summarizes some aspects of this issue that are interesting to know. According to data from the Ministry of Education, in the secondary school system, science and technology curricula have a lower number of female students than in humanities. However, on average, girls obtain better grades than boys at this level of education. It is also observed that although currently the majority of university students in Spain are women, less than 25% of them study Architecture and Engineering, despite the fact that the industrial sector appears to be the one that offers most opportunities in the job market. In general, the sectors known as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) show a low presence and a low active participation of women, despite the good results they obtain in engineering studies, in which they even do slightly better than male graduates, according to data from 2014 (Source: Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport).

Why don´t women study science/technology subjects? There are many aspects that may have an influence on this matter. It may be that the common image of engineering is not very motivating, or a result of the scarce presence of technology at early ages and the fact that it is portrayed as a male field which holds little interest for

girls. It could have to do with the salary gap between male and female engineers who perform the same jobs, or even with the fact that the percentage of women in management positions is lower in the listed companies... The small number of female role models, and the family, social and educational environments are also aspects that do not encourage high achievement in women regarding technical and scientific degrees. All these reasons may explain the lack of this vocation in women.

What is true is that there continues to be an insufficient presence of women engineers and that little or slow progress is being made to overcome old-fashioned cultural stereotypes, although we are very aware of the capability of women, their comprehensive vision regarding the management of emotions and the management of work teams.

This exhibition showcases the work of some young women who were trained at ETSID over the last decade, and it outlines their experience from a competitive and contemporary profile. The perspective of engineering in design focuses on certain aspects that identify this profile and give it technical aptitudes that are particularly significant within the context of post-consumer society and technological development. As Leonardo da Vinci said “first study the science, and then practice the art which is born of that science” and that is what characterizes the practice of design at present.

DISEÑOS CON NOMBRE DE MUJER LOLA MERINO SANJUÁN

Muchos de los objetos que se han considerado iconos del diseño industrial y que han trascendido como modelos que definen una corriente artística, (la silla Hill House, la silla Barcelona, la chaise longue LC, …), se les ha atribuido una autoría íntegramente masculina y sin embargo, hoy sabemos que fueron el resultado de un trabajo en equipo en el que las mujeres desarrollaron un papel fundamental y en muchos casos, “ellas” fueron las precursoras en el estilo. Este artículo quiere poner nombre de mujer a algunos de esos productos icónicos y ser un reconocimiento al trabajo realizado por las diseñadoras desde el inicio del Diseño Industrial hasta nuestros días.

Como punto de partida, May Morris (1862-1938), hija de William Morris, autora de gran parte de los diseños que se le han atribuido a su padre, entre otros del diseño “Madreselva”.

Se encargó desde muy joven del departamento de bordado de la compañía de su padre, Morris & Co, siendo sus diseños los que más cotización alcanzaron. A la muerte de su padre, se estableció por su cuenta ampliando su campo de trabajo a la educación, la joyería y la edición de libros. En 1907, fundó la Women’s Guild of Art, asociación que integraba a las mujeres en la promoción del arte, ya que la Art Worker Guil, no admitía mujeres.

En el modernismo cabe destacar el papel desempeñado por las hermanas Margaret (1864-1933) y Frances Macdonald (1873-1921) formadas en la Escuela de Arte de Glasgow que junto con Rennie Mackintosh y Herbert McNair, constituyeron el grupo “Los cuatro de Glasgow”. De carácter emprendedor, en 1896 las hermanas Macdonald crearon el estudio de decoración Macdonald Sisters Studio en el que se les reconocen a ambas trabajos individualizados. Las obras de Margaret se expusieron en Milán y Viena y ejercieron una notable influencia en artistas como Klim, Hoffmann y Olbrich.

Eileen gray (1878-1976), autora de las sillas Transart y Lota, de la mesa E1027, del sofá Bibendum, además de biombos, alfombras y un largo etcétera, experimentó con la madera lacada, con el doblado de tubos de acero, con la aplicación de diferentes texturas tanto de tejidos como de los propios materiales, todos ellos de gran originalidad y acordes con las tendencias estilísticas de su momento. Tanto su obra arquitectónica

como sus diseños de mobiliario están considerados por muchos críticos como visionarios y antecedentes que influyeron en el trabajo de diseñadores masculinos referentes del diseño actual, pese a que no tuvieron su merecido reconocimiento hasta la década de los 70.

Vinculada a las vanguardias artísticas y asociada a la figura de Mies van der Rohe, Lilly Reich (1855-1947) abarcó diversas disciplinas: interiorismo, mobiliario, espacios expositivos, arquitectura y moda, contó con estudio propio antes de los 30 años y fue una de las pocas profesoras de la Bauhaus. A principios de siglo ya diseñó para Hoffmann el sofá “Kubus” y piezas tan icónicas como la colección Barcelona, el mobiliario de la casa Tugendhat o el interior del Velvet Silk Café, proyectos atribuidos íntegramente a Mies que sin embargo, según apunta Albert Pfeiffer investigador de la obra de Reich, “Mies no ha desarrollado ningún mueble moderno de manera exitosa ni antes ni después de su colaboración con Reich”. En el campo de la arquitectura, fueron pioneras sus propuestas de ambientes de espacio único, buscando la máxima funcionalidad y eficiencia. Su trayectoria profesional evidencia el importante papel que desempeñó en la definición y expansión del diseño racional del siglo XX. Marianne Brandt (1893-1983) Ingeniera en diseño y fotógrafa, fue la primera mujer en dirigir el Taller de Metal de la Escuela de la Bauhaus. Sus objetos son el resultado de la búsqueda de la simplicidad dentro de un proceso de producción industrial. La lámpara tijera, la lámpara Kandem 702, el juego de té modelo M50-M55, son diseños funcionales de estética contemporánea.

De igual modo Aino Marsio (1894-1949) a la sombra de Alvar Aalto, no ha visto reconocida su obra en la arquitectura moderna finlandesa, ni su aportación en la obra de su marido.

Creativa y emprendedora, en 1935 fundó junto con Aalto y el matrimonio Gullichsen la compañía Artek (arte+técnica), de la que fue directora creativa y más tarde directora general. Tanto su arquitectura como los muebles que diseñó en una estética funcionalista, se enmarcan en los principios del Movimiento Moderno. La Villa Mairea, la biblioteca de Vipuri, el sanatorio de Paimio, el jarrón Savoy, el taburete stool, no serían lo que son sin Aino. Ni tampoco la cristalería Bölgeblick, el taburete Paimio, la cocina, la “mesa universal” y el aparador para la “Exposición del Apartamento Mínimo”.

Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999), arquitecta, diseñadora y artista, su trabajo se ha conocido por sus colaboraciones con Le Corbusier y Fernand Leger, sin embargo a sus 24 años, antes de estas colaboraciones, ya era conocida por sus muebles en acero cromado y aluminio anodizado. Defendió siempre su autonomía frente a los arquitectos con los que colaboró, por lo que desde el primer momento creo su propio estudio y un lugar privado de trabajo. Formó parte activa en la definición de la “cellule mínimum”, en la fundación de la “Union des Artistes Modernes (UAM)”, en el prototipo de la cocina integrada propuesto para la “Unité d’Habitation” y en la estandarización de la arquitectura mediante la utilización de elementos prefabricados. Todos sus trabajos han mostrado una perfecta simbiosis entre arquitectura, interiorismo y mobiliario, siguiendo en todo momento las corrientes más vanguardistas, y suya fue la idea de introducir en el campo de lo doméstico ideas de la industria de la locomoción. Además de trabajar con Le Corbusier, colaboró con Lucio Costa, Niemeyer, Candilis y Josic&Woods. Productos emblemáticos como la “Chaise Longue”, las sillas LC1, LC2 y LC3 o la “Siège pivotant” son resultado de su trabajo.

El trabajo de cada una de estas mujeres ha sido fundamental en el desarrollo y evolución del diseño industrial. Afortunadamente la historia, tal y como argumenta la filósofa Susan Buck-Mors, no es un hecho fijo ni estable, sino que es un elemento vivo.

Cada generación aporta una nueva forma de verla y de entenderla. Seguro que una lectura desprovista de los prejuicios de género posicionará a todas estas profesionales del diseño en el lugar que les corresponde.

DESIGNS WITH WOMEN´S NAMES Many of the objects that have been considered icons of industrial design and have transcended their realm to define an artistic trend (the Hill House chair, the Barcelona chair, the LC chaise longue, have been fully attributed to male designers. However, we now know that they were the result of teamwork where women played a crucial role and, in many cases, the women were trailblazers for style. This article seeks to add the names of women to some of these iconic products and offer recognition of the work carried out by women designers from the outset of Industrial Design until the present.

As a starting point, let me mention, May Morris (1862-1938), the daughter of William Morris, the creator of a large number of designs which have been attributed to her father, among others the “Honeysuckle” design. From a very early age, she was in charge of the sewing department of her father´s company Morris & Co, and it was her designs that were most highly valued. Following the death of her father, she set up on her own, extending her field of work to education, jewellery and book publishing. In 1907, she founded the Women’s Guild of Art, an association that integrated women in the promotion of art, as the Art Worker Guild did not allow women to join.

Within modernism, it is worth highlighting the role played by the sisters Margaret (1864-1933) and Frances Macdonald (18731921) educated at the Glasgow School of Art. Together with Rennie Mackintosh and Herbert McNair, they formed the “The Glasgow Four”. With an entrepreneurial spirit, in 1896 the Macdonald sisters created the Macdonald Sisters Studio, a décor studio where both of them were recognised for their individual work. The works of Margaret were exhibited in Milan and Vienna and had a significant influence on artists such as Klim, Hoffmann and Olbrich.

Eileen Gray (1878-1976), creator of the Transart and Lota chairs, the E1027 table, the Bibendum sofa, as well as screens, rugs and lots more, experimented with lacquered wood, bent steel tubes, the application of different textures, both of fabrics and the materials themselves, all highly original and in keeping with the stylistic trends of the time. Both her architectural work and her furniture designs are considered by many critics to be visionary, forerunners that influenced the work of leading male designers in contemporary design, despite the fact that they did not attain the recognition they deserved until the 1970s.

Lilly Reich (1855-1947), who had ties with the artistic avant-garde movements and was associated with Mies van der Rohe, embraced different types of work: interior design, furniture, exhibition spaces, architecture and fashion. She had her own studio by the age of 30 and was one of the few women teachers at the Bauhaus School. At the start of the twentieth century, she designed the “Kubus” sofa for Hoffmann, as well as iconic pieces like the Barcelona collection, the furniture for Villa Tugendhat and the interior design of the Velvet Silk Café, projects which were completely attributed to Mies.

However, Albert Pfeiffer, who has researched of the work of Reich,

points out that, “Mies did not successfully develop any modern furniture before or after his collaboration with Reich”. Within the field of architecture, her proposals for single-space areas that sought maximum functionality and efficiency were pioneering. Her overall production shows the important role she played in the definition and expansion of rational design in the 20th century.

Marianne Brandt (1893-1983) Design engineer and photographer, she was the first woman to lead the Metals Department of the Bauhaus School. Her objects are the result of the pursuit of simplicity within an industrial production process. The scissor lamp, the Kandem 702 lamp, the M50-M55 model tea set are functional designs in contemporary aesthetics.

Likewise, Aino Marsio (1894-1949) who was overshadowed by Alvar Aalto, has not been recognised for her work in modern Finnish architecture, or for her contribution to the work of her husband.

Creative and entrepreneurial, in 1935, alongside Aalto and the Gullichsen couple, she founded the company Artek (art + technology), for which she was creative director and later managing director.

Both her architecture and the furniture she designed with a functionalist aesthetic, are part of the principles of the Modern Movement.

Villa Mairea, the Viipuri library, the Paimio Sanatorium, the Savoy vase, and the stool wouldn´t be what they now are without Aino.

Nor would Bölgeblick glassware, the Paimio stool, kitchens, the “universal table” and the sideboard for the “Minimum Apartment Exhibition”.

Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999), architect, designer and artist, her work has become known for her collaborations with Le Corbusier and Fernand Leger, however at the age of 24, before these collaborations, she was already known for her furniture in chromed steel and anodized aluminium. She always defended her autonomy with regards to the architects she collaborated with, therefore from the outset she created her own studio and a private workspace. She played an active part in the definition of the “cellule minimum”, in the foundation of the “Union des Artistes Modernes (UAM)”, in the prototype of the integrated kitchen proposed for the “Unité d’Habitation” and in the standardization of architecture through the use of prefabricated components. All her work showed a perfect symbiosis between architecture, interior design and furniture, following the most avant-garde trends at all times, and it was her idea to incorporate features from the locomotion industry into the home. In addition

The work of each of these women has been crucial to the development and evolution of industrial design. Fortunately, as the philosopher Susan Buck-Mors argues, history is not a fixed or stable fact, but a living phenomenon. Every generation contributes a new way of looking at it and understanding it. There is no doubt that a reading of history free of gender-based prejudice will give all of these design professionals the place they deserve.

¿Quién ha diseñado esto?

¿Quién habrá diseñado esto? Me lo pregunto mientras voy a un concierto a disfrutar. Porque me pregunto siempre acerca de cómo está configurado el mundo. Y me gusta el diseño. Y sé que la actualidad se basa en la ingeniería. Y me pregunto cosas. ¿Están las matemáticas al servicio de la ingeniería o la ingeniería al servicio de las matemáticas? El mundo es complejo y, tras cada elemento, conjunto o sistema, hay muchas horas de ideación, cálculos, representaciones y discusiones. Las mujeres tienen buenas ideas, calculan perfectamente, saben representar y no digamos discutir. ¿Por qué unos méritos son más visibles que otros? ¿Por qué hablamos tanto de género al tiempo que lo globalizamos todo? ¿Quién es Paula Scher?

Es innegable que la visibilidad del hombre en el diseño es mucho mayor que la de la mujer. Pero va a cambiar, porque las escuelas de diseño están llenas de mujeres. Carolyn Davidson era estudiante cuando diseñó el logotipo de Nike en 1971, uno de los logotipos más efectivos y aplaudidos de todos los tiempos.

Pati Nuñez fue la primera mujer en recibir el premio Nacional de Diseño. ¡20 años después de su creación en 1987! En aquel entonces no había ninguna mujer en el jurado. Actualmente son más de la mitad. ¿Alguien entiende al prestigioso colectivo Memphis sin Nathalie Du Pasquier?

Un buen diseño no es cuestión de género. No creo que alguien mire si quien está detrás es diseñador o diseñadora cuando adquiere un vehículo o amuebla un comedor. ¿A quién no le gusta el Sillón Eames Lounge? Es, probablemente, la obra más reconocida de una creativa pareja en la que Ray, ella, es omitida a menudo de la autoría de la

No preguntes a los hombres. ¿Por qué las diseñadoras industriales acaban trabajando para otros estudios y agencias y pocas fundan sus propios estudios? ¿La mayoría de sus profesores han sido hombres? ¿Es por la naturaleza de la sociedad y de los estímulos que prodiga?

WHO DESIGNED THIS? Who designed this? I wonder as I head to a concert to have fun. Because I always wonder about how the world is configured. And I like design. And I know that modern life is based on engineering. And I ask myself things.

Is mathematics at the service of engineering, or is engineering at the service of mathematics? The world is complex and behind every element, ensemble or system, there are many hours of devising, calculating, representations and discussions. Women have good ideas, they calculate perfectly, they know how to represent, and, of course, discuss things.

Why are some merits more visible than others? Why are we talking about gender so much at a time when we are globalizing everything? Who is Paula Scher?

It cannot be denied that men enjoy much greater visibility than women in the field of design. But this is going to change because design schools are full of women. Carolyn Davidson was a student when she designed the Nike logo in 1971, one of the most effective and applauded logos of all time.

Pati Nuñez was the first woman to receive the National Design Award. 20 years after it was created in 1987! Back then, there were no women on the award jury. At present, they make up more than half of it.

Can anyone understand the prestigious Memphis Group without Nathalie Du Pasquier?

Good design isn´t a question of gender. I don´t think anyone inquires whether the designer was a man or a woman when they buy a car or furnish a dining room. Who doesn´t like the Eames Lounge Chair? It is probably the most recognised work by a creative couple, in which Ray, the woman, is often omitted as creator of their joint work. Will this happen

again? Will the establishment, culture and education allow it?

Do Apple followers know who designed widely used icons such as the Lasso, the Grabber and the Paint Bucket? Or who designed the Chicago typeface which was so important for the development of the brand? Or the symbol of the essential command key? Or the Happy Mac, that welcomed Mac users when they switched on their computers for many years? I cannot decide whether this is important or not, but in any case, the answer is Susan Kare.

The glass ceiling, motherhood, success, round tables, companies, trips, fame, ambition. Is being a woman an obstacle? Don´t ask men. Why do women who are industrial designers end up working for other studios and agencies, and few of them set up their own firms? Were they mostly taught by men? Is it due to the nature of society and the incentives it offers?
