ennessee sparkles this holiday season as it welcomes families to experience an enchanting blend of festivities and attractions. From dazzling light displays to winter family-friendly attractions, the state offers an unforgettable festive journey. Tennessee’s vibrant communities and breathtaking landscapes provide the perfect backdrop for a joyous celebration of the holiday season. In Nashville: Gaylord Opryland hosts its signature holiday attraction ICE!, from Nov. 10 to Jan. 1. This year the attraction will feature favorite ice sculptures from scenes in the beloved movie “The Polar Express.” The movie comes to life with magnificent sculptures hand-carved by masterfully skilled artists from Harbin, China from more than two million pounds of ice. The carvers travel more than 6,402 miles from their home in China, known as “Ice City” for hosting the world’s largest annual ice and snow sculpting festival in the world. Colored ice, clear ice and LED lights are all used to create the breathtaking display. The holiday celebration continues with a brand-new Christmas dinner show and a variety of festive activities including ice skating, ice tubing, visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus, and so much more. Dive into history with Holidays at The Hermitage in Nashville: On Saturday Dec. 2, add some personalized decor to your holiday collection this season with The Hermitage’s two-day DIY Christmas wreath workshop. Participants will have the opportunity to craft a holiday-inspired wreath using a grapevine form with berries and foliage from the grounds at The Hermitage. Tickets include access to the Hermitage grounds, a 1,120-acre National Historic Landmark with wildlife, hiking trails, field quarters, historical markers and more. On Saturday, Jan. 6, The Hermitage hosts Winter Frolic, influenced by Andrew

Jackson’s 1835 White House Christmas Frolic. This event welcomes guests to play the same games the family did - including an artificial snowball fight! The event will feature festive mocktails and cocktails, along with multiple food vendors and live music. It will conclude with a Yule Log Ceremony, symbolizing the closure of 2023 and the embrace of the exciting things to come in 2024.

Christmas Angel

I

’ve had my share of visits from “angels”: the 2 guys that appeared from nowhere to push my car to safety after I ran out of gas at the bottom of the freeway off ramp - the unseen one that prevented the huge out of control RV from crashing into my car (even though it was coming straight for me) which subsequently flipped over right behind me, - or the one that steered my car to safety when my brakes locked and my car spun out of control in heavy freeway traffic. Each visit left me feeling very small and grateful to God for His protection. This one was a bit different. The East Tennessee’s Mountain Views Team In 1990, I had the week before Christmas off work. One of our cars was in the shop, so I needed to take Tim to the train station so Tim & Kathy Rose, Tom & Judy Irmen, & Meredith Hancock he could get to work one very foggy morning. On my way back, I stopped for breakfast at Burger King just off the freeway. As I sat Serving the Loudon & Monroe lake and golf front communities in my car eating my breakfast and listening to Christmas music, a car drove up and parked beside mine. ARE YOU LIVING A JUST IN CASE RETIREMENT? By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA

’ve noticed a trend…as I work with retired clients who have saved diligently their entire lives and accumulated a significant nest egg, they aren’t living out the retirement dream lifestyle they imagined for themselves. They’re still in preservation mode, living a Just in Case retirement. As in, we shouldn’t buy that dream house or dream car or dream vacation Just In Case we need that money. What if we get sick, my spouse gets sick, the markets take a dive, taxes go way up, or we live a really long time? They end up never spending their nest egg, so their kids inherit it and, you guessed it… the kids buy their own dream house and drive their own dream car and take their own dream vacation. An integral part of my job is to create financial plans that can withstand the unknowns in retirement – market corrections, bad health, higher taxes and living a long time. When these are identified and addressed, it becomes much easier to relax and let the good times roll. Here’s a quick run-down on how we do it: » Market corrections: Let’s be honest, it’s not “if” the market corrects when you’re retired, it’s “when” and how many times. Crafting an Investment Bucket Strategy segmented into time horizons and need is a straightforward and effective strategy to combat inevitable market corrections.

» Bad health: Make a plan to pay for health care costs Medicare doesn’t cover. Perhaps you think that you and your spouse will always be in perfectly good health and pass peacefully in your sleep with zero medical costs, which sounds lovely but may be wishful thinking. Look at asset-based long term care insurance plans that can leverage your dollar and create tax-free pools of money for home health care costs all the way through full skilled care. » Higher taxes: Taxes are on sale right now and Roth IRA conversions should be on your agenda if you have significant pre-tax dollars. Roth IRA’s are tax-free and insulated from future tax increases. » Living a long time: Create a base layer of guaranteed income, using Social Security, pensions and income annuities to literally create income you cannot outlive. The reassurance of a sound financial plan can give you the permission you need to live your dream retirement rather than leaving your hard-earned money for your kids to live theirs. Call or email and tell what you’re dreaming about. We’ll make a plan, together. SILENCE AND SLOW TIME W 10A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, December, 2023

By Steve Dormer e’ve reached that time of year again. You know, the sprint between Halloween and New Year’s Day that we call the Holiday Season. Christmas is the prime focus, of course, but the run up to it - and the recovery from it absorbs most of our time, money and energy. We naturally have our own traditions to honor no matter how complicated and logistically challenging they may be. In addition, there’s also the music, the food, the decorations - all requiring attention in service of delivering the Perfect Christmas. And then there’s the shopping. This is a communal activity accompanied by a communal disorder known as mall-madness. It’s impossible to avoid and thankfully, just a seasonal, though pernicious, disorder relieved only by bouts of online or old school catalogue shopping. I think that frames the season. Good luck out there. We’ve all got a lot to do and such a brief time to get it done. But wait, is it possible in all of the to-and-fro that we may be missing something? Don’t reach for a pen to add another item to your list. I mean, is there, or should there be, time for reflection or contemplation? Currently, I don’t show that on my calendar, and I have all the important things recorded there. Right now, I’m only contemplating how many outside lights I’m going to have this year. It will be a substantial increase over last year, of course. I’m in a light war with the house across the fairway from us, and this year I’ve got a few surprises for them. But I digress, as we all seem to do at this time of year. The title, “Silence and Slow Time” is a phrase from a John Keat’s poem that has nothing to do with Santa Claus or any other aspect of Christmas. The phrase reminds me of what is most rare in our Christmas preparations. At Church we celebrate Advent with Wednesday evening services in anticipation of Christmas. There’s very little hoopla associated with that. It’s almost like a retreat from everything else. There’s certainly time for reflection. I make sure to attend if I’m not busy doing something else. Back to John Keats’ poem. It’s titled “Ode on a Grecian Urn”. It’s an unlikely choice for Christmas inspiration - nothing like a good Hallmark movie - but it got me thinking about “that something” we might be missing. Keats shares his own thoughts on observing an ancient piece of pottery displayed in the British Museum. He is taken by the human figures painted on the vase – he addresses them in the poem - and then contemplates other heady things like, say, eternity. His phrase, “silence and slow time,” speaks to the unchanged world that the figures – painted over two thousand years earlier - occupy. Keats compares their world to the ever-changing world of his experience. That’s what got me thinking. No matter how busy we are at this time of year, we are, nonetheless, confronted by changeless characters from two thousand years ago - prophets, shepherds, angels, a new mother and her baby, a father, and an inn keeper. In addition, we read the timeless

story of a people longing for the promise that Christmas reveals. Maybe what we need most of all in our Christmas preparations is a little silence and slow time to listen to the message those figures, and those words, convey. Let’s pencil that in on our calendars. Have a Blessed Advent. Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church 143 Chota Center Loudon, TN 37774 865-816-4756 shepherdofthelaketn.org

ave you ever thought how different the world would be if Jesus hadn’t come to earth 2000 years ago? Imagine what life would be without His gift of Salvation, His transforming power, and His amazing grace? Christmas gives us some of these answers as we feel a sense of joy and love that comes from giving to others. But what are we giving back to Him? Truly, we need to focus on Jesus because He is the reason for the season! At First Baptist Church of Tellico Village, we will be focused on the birth of Jesus and celebrating Christmas all December long. Starting with our beautiful Joy of Christmas prgram. Some tickets may remain for the Sunday, December 3rd and Monday, 4th concerts. Please call the church office at 865-408-0110. Each Sunday in December we will celebrate Advent, the anticipated birth of Jesus, as we count down the days to Christmas. If you are looking for a church home, come and worship with us as Pastor David Talley preaches from the Bible and prepares our hearts for coming of Christ. Our exceptional music ministry includes our choir and orchestra under the leadership of David Whipple, Jr. Jesus commanded us to go and make disciples and we take that charge quite seriously. Under the leadership of our Associate Pastor Kem Lindsay, we offer several Bible study options. Sunday Worship services are 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM and Bible study options available at the same times. For more info about us, connect with us at FBCTV.org.

years when I was in junior high, so I have never had any problems visiting the dentist.” However, this was an entirely new procedure for her. “Dr. Bradshaw has provided excellent dental care for me,” said Lynette. “I’ve had crown work done, regular fillings and cleanings, and the most important was my dental

implants. I was apprehensive about THAT procedure, but Dr. Bradshaw and his staff worked with me, going above and beyond to make sure that I had a positive experience. It took some time to talk me into the procedure, and the staff was very patient and comforting in easing my fears. “I have always had a positive experience with the staff and Dr. Bradshaw. They are always so caring and helpful, and they go out of their way to make you feel comfortable in their office. You feel a sense of ‘family’ in their office, and you can tell that they truly care about not only each other, but their patients as well. “I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Bradshaw and the staff at Heritage Family Dentistry. I would HIGHLY recommend Dr. Bradshaw and Heritage Family Dentistry to anyone! They have been one of my most favorite healthcare professionals I have ever dealt with. They genuinely care about their patients, and it shows!” If you are in search of a team of dedicated, compassionate, and caring dental professionals for yourself or your entire family, why not trust the Heritage Family Dentistry team just like Lynette has? Gathering Season is Here!

And just like that, 2024 is almost here! This time of year, there are more frequent parties and dinners where we catch up and reminisce on all of the good memories from this year and years past. I like to call it gathering season. Get-togethers with family and friends are what fuels me, and I love being able to invite loved ones to my home to celebrate. By having my home ready to go for my lifestyle needs and my design style, I’m able to focus on enjoying my time with my guests and the festivities instead of being worried about getting my home ready before they get here. Unexpected guests? Come on in! We believe that everyone deserves to live in a beautiful and comfortable home that makes them feel welcomed and happy. We also realize how an investment in your home sets the stage for family celebrations, improves your everyday life, and helps make memories that will last a lifetime. Nothing is more sacred than your personal space you share with your family, and nothing makes your day easier than a home that fits your lifestyle. This is one reason we are thankful our clients trust us and ask us again and again to help them achieve this feeling with their homes. We are grateful to be interior designers, and getting to help our clients with their homes is both rewarding and fulfilling. We’re very blessed to be able to share our talents and training to help others love their homes. This holiday season, give yourself the gift of loving where you live every day - it’s one that benefits you and all of your loved ones. We’re also, of course, grateful for you, reader. Thank you for reading our articles each month and for your unwavering support. Here’s to a prosperous New Year filled with positivity and joy from this gathering season to the next. Happy Holidays!

n Veterans Day, the American Legion Tellico Lake Post 256 set up a donation table at the Vonore Food City center in support of Wreaths-Across-America, a nationwide program to honor past service men and women interred in national cemeteries. The goal is to show that the veterans have not been forgotten by placing a wreath at each headstone. Thanks to the generosity of shoppers the Post collected over $2000 which will purchase 118 wreaths, bringing the Post’s contribution to the program for this year to over 750 wreaths. The wreath laying ceremony will be held at noon on December 16th at the Knoxville National Cemetery. Tellico Village Welcomes Sirrabelle Boutique - Jewelry and Gifts

T

Leah & Mom

here’s a brand-new boutique store in the Village, Sirrabelle Boutique - Jewelry and Gifts. It’s located in Lakeside Plaza on the opposite corner to Little Italy, and it’s here just in time for your Christmas shopping! This month, we interviewed Leah Stilson, the owner of Sirrabelle, to find out more about her new store. Mountain Views: Tell us a little about yourself and why you started Sirrabelle. Leah: It’s a really odd story. I was a corporate manager for the state of Illinois at HD Supply Facilities and also worked at Harbor Brewing Company brewing beer and serving. I have never NOT had two jobs. When COVID-19 happened, a third of our business at HD Supply diminished and they did major layoffs. I started making jewelry out of boredom when a friend said I need to get a hobby, as I am a workaholic. Prior to that I had never made one piece of jewelry. There was a hiring freeze in Chicago at the time and I couldn’t support myself, so I prayed to God asking him what I should do. One night his voice woke me from my sleep, saying to move to Tennessee. The next morning, I put my house up on the market. Three days later it sold, and 35 days later, I was in Tennessee. Once here, my mom pushed me to try and sell my

Something for anyone. jewelry. I was surprised that people began buying. I never knew I was artistic at all. I felt so humbled that people enjoyed my work. I slowly added small batch branded clothing and purses. I love the people in Tellico Village so when an opportunity arose, I thought a store was a good move. MV: When did you open? Leah: I am excited to say I opened the doors November 10th, so Sirrabelle Boutique is still brand new! MV: What types of items do you have available? Leah: I still sell Sirrabelle Jewelry, small batch and unique clothing, and purses, but I also added on some wonderful items that local artists create. MV: Can you tell is a little about those other artists and their creations? Leah: I am so honored to carry products from such talented artists. They make the store well-rounded. If a person is thinking of someone, they no longer have to run all the way to Vonore or Lenoir City to get a special card or gift. I have handmade pottery, fantastic high-quality wreaths and decor, mind blowing quilted items, homemade soaps, slate photo decor, and of course my favorite card maker, Rhoda’s Cards. Something for anyone. MV: What are your hours? Leah: Currently, I am open Tuesday through Saturday 11am to 5pm except for Wednesday. Wednesday’s hours are 1pm to 5pm, because I still go to the Tellico Village farmer’s market. It’s one of my favorite things to do each week! Please make sure to stop by and support our new boutique shop in Tellico Village. You may find that perfect gift for Christmas and get a chance to see some amazing unique items! You can also find them on Facebook under Sirrabelle Jewelry. Sirrabelle Jewelry and Gifts 318 Lakeside Plaza Suite 332 Loudon, TN 37774. Gifts From the Heart- Caregiver Thoughts December, 2023, East Tennessee’s Mountain Views • 5B

I

By Diane Strever and Celia Gruzalski for OurPlace TN

t’s hard to believe that the holiday season is upon us once again (although some retailers think it begins in mid-October)! Many of you may be organized and start your holiday shopping before December. If you are a caregiver of a loved one, being creative or flexible in gift giving takes on new meaning. One area that is often overlooked is the chance to help those adults with Alzheimer’s or dementia to pick out gifts for others, rather than leaving them out of the joy of giving.

Involve them in finding gifts online that can be ordered and delivered to you. Ask them to help with the simple wrapping of gifts; one of our participants at Our PLACE grew up wrapping parcels for his parent’s business when he was younger, and loves to wrap! If there is no family nearby, have them pick out a gift for a charitable organization, such as an animal shelter or youth foster services. Deliver the gift together, to have them experience the joy of giving to others. Have a neighbor or family member take your loved one shopping to pick out something for you as a caregiver, so they can feel they are thanking you and celebrating your care of them. One of the most meaningful gifts you can give to your loved one is the gift of time and experiences. Drive them to see Christmas light displays, pick out a wreath, or enjoy a cup of hot chocolate in a festively decorated shop. Set out a bird feeder, subscribe to a birding magazine, and find a simple bird identification book to enjoy the various species that visit during the winter. Spend an afternoon making holiday cookies or create Mason jar cookie mixes to give to others. Your loved one can help measure the ingredients and layer them in the jar. They can help decorate the baking directions you type up for the recipient. When you get together with family or friends to exchange gifts, keep it low key. It might be helpful to give everyone a name tag that you have decorated together. Take videos or photos of the activities to share after the holidays, even making them into a small album. One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself as a caregiver is to seek respite and time for yourself through such programs as Our PLACE. Having time to cultivate activities you may want to do makes YOU a more authentic version of yourself, and you become a stronger, better person to help with your loved one. One of our participant’s family is able to volunteer at a local animal shelter, which has always been a goal of hers, now that she knows her mother is safe, and enjoying companionship and community through Our PLACE. You might want to consider giving a monetary gift to Our PLACE, in memory or honor of someone you know with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Our Angel Program has multiple levels of giving, and you can be assured that gifts will continue to grow our program that provides a much-needed resource for our community and individual families. The Our PLACE staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers wish you and your family a Merry Christmas, and happy, healthy New Year. Our PLACE is a 501C non-profit, charitable organization, and any donations are tax deductible. For more information go to www.ourplacetn.org. The Fabulous Home of Colonel Charles H. Bacon

I

By Bo Carey, Historian

n childhood my grandmother would take us on a ride through the country, usually out the old Vonore Road with glimpses of the Little Tennessee River and vast river bottom farmlands. The most impressive view was the fabulous home of Colonel Charles H. Bacon, the immensely successful industrialist, and his wife Betty. Col. Bacon had established numerous business ventures in downtown Loudon including the Bacon Hosiery Mill, a Full Fashion Mill and the Bacon Creamery. The creamery was provided much of its rich milk by the Colonel’s two massive dairy farms in the country. He also had another large mill in Lenoir City. The hospital was named for him, as well as the high school football field. For modern day readers, the beautiful 3-story home would have been in what’s now the Mialaquo community, off current day Oostagala Drive. It had spacious open rooms, a dance hall on the top floor and beautiful formal gardens in the rear. Old photos may be observed on area history blogs or the internet. The farm surrounding the home was known for its whitewashed fencing and herd of Jersey cattle. There was also the Bacon “Lower Farm” near current day Chota Neighborhood. It was known as the Maple Hill Farm. Much of the beautiful farmland now lies beneath Tellico Lake. The grand old home was demolished in the late 1970’s before completion of the TVA dam project. The site survives on a small island, where some Villagers visit by boat. Houses on Oostagala Drive are listed for sale today as high as $2.5 million, but none of them will ever be as elegant or impressive as the Bacon Home which graced the same grounds 75 years ago. Bo Carey is a 7th generation Loudon County resident with a passion for local history. He is the owner of Greer’s Home Furnishings in Historic Loudon and is available for lectures or programs for any area group or civic club. December In the Garden

‘T

by

Lisa Grugin

is the season to talk about holiday plants, but first let me talk a bit about outdoor chores: » Erratic weather is here to stay, but you can still plant trees and shrubs. 80% of root growth occurs during the fall and winter, so anything planted now has a head start on plants installed in the spring. » If you haven’t mulched lately, consider adding enough to give you about 3”. This will keep the soil temperature and moisture levels more stable. Natural materials are best. » Keep weeding! It is amazing how quickly weeds can take over your yard. » Don’t forget to do a weekly (or at least every couple of weeks) walk around so you can see what is happening. This is also a good time to make plans for next year. Now let’s talk about the care of seasonal plants: Christmas Cactus The Christmas cactus and its cousins are very low maintenance, but there are a few tricks to growing them: » They are tropical cactus, not desert cactus. They don’t like hot afternoon sun and do not like to get bone dry. They do like lots of light, however, and won’t bloom well if kept in too dark a spot. » The bloom cycle is triggered by cool temperatures and longer periods of darkness. Keep them away from heat sources and give them 13 hours of darkness per day. » Don’t overwater. Every couple of weeks is fine for most homes. Once the blooms have finished, let them rest for a bit by withholding water for 4-5 weeks. When you see new growth, it is time to resume regular watering. If the plant has been in the same pot for more than 3-4 years, or if it is very crowded, you will need to up-pot. Don’t worry if you accidentally break some pieces off. They are easy to propagate, so you can give them to a friend. Call us if you need instructions. Cut Christmas Trees and Greenery Many Christmas tree farms have gone under, so cut trees are scarce. Don’t wait too long, and please buy from a reputable dealer to ensure the best quality. Trees need to get into water within 20 minutes of being cut. We will do a fresh cut here if you don’t have a chainsaw at home. Use a tree stand that holds at least a gallon of water and keep it full. Once a tree dries out, the cut seals and it will no longer “drink.” As for wreaths and garland, they will do best if they are sprayed with an anti-transpirant or misted with water regularly. They are also happiest if they get some shade from the hot afternoon sun. Poinsettia I often have folks tell me that they can’t keep a poinsettia alive. This is usually because they bought it from a box store or grocery store, and it was doomed. Always buy from a greenhouse or garden center because others simply do not have the experience to care for a poinsettia properly. Here are some other hints: » Don’t purchase a plant that is already in a plastic sleeve. This camouflages damage and creates a fungal breeding ground. The plant should be placed in a sleeve for transportation but remove the sleeve when you get home by cutting it off or pulling it from the bottom. Please don’t pull it over the top like you are taking off a t-shirt!

» Don’t expose the poinsettia to cold temperatures. Poinsettias are tropical plants, and anything below 50 will damage it. Freezing temperatures will kill it in less than a minute. » The bracts are very fragile because of their size. This means poinsettias should be put where they will not be bumped or brushed against. » The poinsettia is mildly toxic. Some people (and animals) may have a reaction to the sap, so keep plants away from pets and children. » Water the plant when the soil feels dry. I find it easiest to take mine out of the wrap and put it in the sink to water it. After it drains, I put it back in the wrap. Don’t let it sit in water because they are prone to root rot. Amaryllis, cyclamen, and other plants marketed at Christmas have specific growing needs. Some of them will live year-round, some prefer to go outside, and some will go dormant after they flower. Please give us a call if you have any questions. We will be closed December 24th through January 1st and will reopen on the 2nd. Our hours will be Tuesday through Saturday from 9-5. Let us know if we can help you with your plans for spring.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you! Meadow View Greenhouses & Garden Center 9885 Highway 11E, Lenoir City, TN 37772 865.986.7229 MeadowViewGreenhouse.com

O

Kerry’s Expert Rug Maintenance and Cleaning Tips: » Vacuum your rug regularly and, if possible, flip the rug over and vacuum the back of it, too. The vibration will sift loose soil to the front of rug. Turn the rug over again and then vacuum off the top one more time. » Rotate the position of the rug every few months, if possible, so that the higher traffic part is in a different place. » Remove spots as soon as they occur. The longer something that can stain the rug remains in the fibers, the more difficult it can be to remove them later. » Blot up spills using just water first. I don’t recommend using Resolve or OxiClean on rug stains as these products are designed for laundry, and it can take copious amounts of water to flush them out of the rug once they are there. » Feel free to call me at 865-691-5686 for further advice. Next month Kerry will have some tips for spot cleaning of pet urine! If your Oriental rug needs an expert touch, be sure to call Kerry at Superior Rug Cleaning. Superior Rugs believes that properly caring for your Oriental rug requires more than just a carpet cleaning machine. That’s why we have a 12-step cleaning process, where we first determine the exact fiber content and dyes used, then take the rug to our specialized facility, wash it in pure, deionized cold water in a wool-safe solution. Once the rug is washed, we give it a thorough rinse and hang it to dry in our temperature-controlled drying room. Whether it’s in your home or place of business, our cleaning process is sure to put that extra magic back into your handmade Oriental rug. We’ve had hundreds of satisfied customers walk through our doors over the years, and we’re excited to add you to the list. Be sure to call today or visit our website for more information or to receive a cleaning estimate for your Oriental rug! Superior Rug Cleaning

f course, Christmas is about sharing time with family and friends, so for those who have developed hearing loss, the holidays can be an especially tough time. If you already have a great hearing aid, you will know the joy and improvement to the holiday experience that these modern devices can bring. But if you don’t, you may not even realize what you are missing! People celebrate the holidays in all sorts of ways, but most of us have a few favorite sounds of the season. With hearing aids, you can fully appreciate sounds like: » Laughter from your children or grandchildren when they open their gifts. » Church choirs singing. » Christmas carolers going door to door. » the clatter of pans as your Christmas turkey goes in the oven. » Laughter and conversation at the family dinner table. » A performance of your holiday favorites. » Your favorite Christmas movie. Our hearing tests are free and easy. During your hearing test we will determine: » The quietest sound you can hear at different pitches.

East Tennessee Area Wildlife: The Short-eared Owl & The Harrier Photographing the beauty of Tennessee, and the wildlife who call it home.

W

ith winter approaching, we can expect some winter migrants that like to spend the cold months here in Tennessee. One is the short-eared owl, and the other is the northern harrier which comes from up north. Of course, there are more birds that will stay here for the winter, but I’m only going to talk about these two because I enjoy photographing them when they are here, and now is a good time to start looking for them. Both of these birds spend most of their time in open fields and where you find a harrier, you will often also find a short-eared owl. If you own a lot of open fields, I suggest going out at dusk - this is when the harrier will still be hunting and the short-eared owls will be gearing up to hunt. You don’t have to own land to see them; I have seen them in many open fields that are public! I don’t have great shots of either of these birds as they are tough to photograph but I am happy with the few I have. Contact: Kalleybcook@gmail.com

https://www.facebook.com/kalleycookphotography https://kalleycook.smugmug.com/

Short-Eared Owl Fly-By - The short-eared owls actually prefer to come out early dusk to hunt so you often can get them out during the beautiful golden hour. On this particular evening, there were four owls flying around along with the harriers. Even if they are very far off and I can’t photograph them, it’s still a joy just to watch them hunt but every now and then I would get a somewhat close fly-by.

Short-Eared Owl Hunting - Watching these beautiful owls hunt is almost mesmerizing. Their flight pattern is like no other and described as “moth like”. Often, I can pick out a short-eared owl just by the way they flap their wings. This owl was looking over its shoulder during flight and ended up diving down for a mouse.

Harrier Resting - People often describe these hawks as regal, and regal they are. They have a very unique look to them and are easily identified by a distinct white band on the back of their tail, which can be seen in flight. This is also a female, but if you have a chance to google the males, you will see that they are a grey-white color, are often referred as the “grey ghost,” and tend to be a little more elusive.

Harrier Diving - Both short-eared owl and harrier have the ability to fly over fields for a long period of time. I was watching this harrier for a while when it suddenly went down for a dive. It came up empty handed that time, but I’m sure it got the next one!
