The Designer Secret to Elegant Holiday Décor

How High-Quality Florals and Ribbons Transform Your Seasonal Space

As the holiday season approaches, make your decorations stand out with high-quality florals and ribbons, especially in Christmas trees and garlands. The right materials can transform your festive arrangements from ordinary to extraordinary, creating a sophisticated atmosphere that delights guests. Here’s how these elements can elevate your holiday decor—and how Design Decor makes luxury effortless.

Small Details Make a Big Impact.

While budget-friendly options may seem appealing, premium florals and ribbons bring unmatched texture, color, and elegance. As a woman-owned business, Design Decor simplifies the selection process, offering designer-curated decor that ensures a cohesive, beautiful look

Real-Touch Florals: The New Standard for Luxury

Today’s high-end faux florals, like those in Design Decor’s collections, use real-touch technology for lifelike texture and color. These florals stay vibrant throughout the season, requiring no maintenance. From dining centerpieces to cascading tree decorations, our real-touch pieces keep your holiday decor looking fresh all season. The garlands pictured here, our Norfolk Pine Collection, are our best-sellers nationwide this season, their

vibrant colors and real touch texture will deliver season after season!

Transforming Trees and Garlands with Florals

Incorporating real-touch florals into Christmas trees and garlands adds depth and elegance. Imagine white peonies or burgundy roses nestled among branches, instantly elevating the traditional tree. Garlands draped along mantels or staircases can be enhanced with florals like cedar or frosted berries for a touch of classic charm or modern winter style. You’ll see examples of this in our Southern Charm garland where we used big bold magnolias for a festive touch.

Ribbons: The Finishing Touch Ribbons are essential for adding texture and luxury to decor, especially on trees and garlands. Our high-quality velvet, silk, and wired-edge ribbons hold their shape beautifully, allowing you to create graceful loops and bows. Just a few wellplaced ribbons can make your decor look polished and complete. The use of quality ribbon is a game-changing practice used by professional decorators.

Stress-Free Designer-Curated Décor

Design Decor takes the guesswork out of decorating with exclusive, handcrafted sets that include everything needed for a holiday transformation. This season, designer Amy Barnett introduces 12 unique themes, from traditional “Home for the Holidays” to the modern “Nature’s Opulence.” Each limited-edition set ensures your decor is unique and luxurious.

A Thanksgiving Wish

ith so much ugliness and devastation happening in the world these days, it’s so easy to stay focused on those things and let it swallow us up. I’m sure you have friends or loved ones (or maybe yourself) who struggle; maybe it’s financial, or with health challenges, just to name a few.

So, in the midst of so much tragedy, we often forget that there is still so much to be thankful for. It is interesting to note that it was on October 3, 1863, at the very height of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln issued a Thanksgiving Day proclamation encouraging Americans “in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea, and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a Day of Thanksgiving and Prayer to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens.”

This Thanksgiving, I pray you take time to count your blessings.

There is so much I am thankful for: my wonderful husband of over 40 years and business partner, Tim, and our fantastic son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren. I am grateful that my mother is still with us and healthy (and enjoying East Tennessee SO much) and for all she has taught me. I am grateful to live in such a beautiful area. I am grateful for my health and for living in this country where I have the opportunity to own a business. I am so grateful for our graphics designer and friend, Meredith, who always cheerfully helps us meet our crazy deadlines. I am grateful for all of our advertising partners that have put their trust in us throughout the years. And I am grateful for all of our readers that support our advertisers’ businesses.

I am thankful the first responder men and women who serve sacrifice so much to serve and protect us. I am thankful to be able to have the freedom to worship the grantor of all of these blessings, and I am thankful for all those who have fought and continue to fight to preserve that freedom. Please, remember to thank and honor them this Veterans Day.

Please also join me in praying for all of those whose lives have been turned upside down due to the recent devastating hurricanes and floods. So many of our neighbors in Northeast Tennessee and Western North Carolina will need our support and prayers for a long time to come as they rebuild.

Our blessings are many, and I shall continue to count them. I pray this Thanksgiving you take the time to reflect on yours. Most of all, I am thankful to Our Father in Heaven – the Grantor of these blessings. From all of us at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views to all of you, we wish a very happy Thanksgiving.

Thanks-and Looking Forward for Caregivers

Welcome Back to the Our PLACE monthly update, and we hope you’re enjoying the hint of autumn in the air and the excitement of fall football! Thank you to all who participated in our second Walk @ Remember and Car Show. Events such as this allow us to grow our program and continue our support to those suffering with Alzheimer’s and dementia. We hope to improve their quality of life by providing a day program of care, social interaction, and therapeutic activities in a safe and nurturing environment. Our PLACE also works to support families and caregivers through respite, support groups, education, and resources, allowing us to create more “Moments of Joy” for families and participants. We are able to have more participants at this time, so if you have a loved one, or know of a friend or neighbor who would benefit from our adult day center program,

please pass our information along. In addition, we are open to volunteers who want to share their time and friendship at Our PLACE, based on scheduling which would fit your needs. Assisting staff with art or music therapy, exercise, games and socialization, gardening, outdoor activities, or community service projects, will enrich your life and fill your heart with “Moments of Joy.” Please call Sarah Martin at 865-657-7222 to inquire about volunteering.

One of my greatest Moments of Joy is having the opportunity to interview caregivers, who share their family journey to have found Our PLACE, and how meaningful that is for their family. This month I spoke with Brenda and Jay, whose mother Glenda (Gigi) has attended the program two days a week for a year and a half. Gigi grew up in San Diego, was homecoming queen, married the captain of the football team, and traveled extensively, since her dad worked for the railroad. Gigi was a runway model in Las Vegas, worked in real estate, ran a medical office, and traveled with her Navy Captain husband; she has 4 children and 6 grandchildren. Her diagnosis came through the Pat Summitt Foundation, and their doctor recommended Our PLACE for socialization and the program benefits. Brenda was at first reluctant to try it with her mother, but Jay prompted her to give it a try. They were pleasantly surprised, as she loves the friends she has made there, and makes plans the night before they get ready for “school.” She makes her bed, showers, and picks out her clothes, paying great attention to detail. The program is a real confidence booster for Gigi; she relates the activities of her day and has shown remarkable improvement in her quality of life. Having Gigi in a safe, warm environment allows Brenda and Jay to take day trips, go hiking, run errands, and have periods of calm. Brenda relies on Facebook support groups (Caregivers of Elderly Parents) to provide answers or humor in the face of a tough day. Watching Gigi being greeted by her friends in the morning is truly “A Moment of Joy!”

A Collective Thank You to Volunteers, Donors and Community

On Friday, September 27, Loudon County Habitat for Humanity volunteers, staff and partner families braved rain and wind brought to us by hurricane Helene as they picked up large donations and unloaded cars in preparation for the 20th annual Garage Sale and Boutique at the Community Church at Tellico Village, while Community Church Crafters and volunteers sorted and priced merchandise dropped off by donors.

The two groups partner each year for the sale which features donated items ranging from furniture and home goods to lawn equipment, appliances and clothing in addition to computers contributed by the Computer Users Club. At 8am on Saturday, the doors opened to the awaiting crowd of shoppers. Fittingly, a canoe was the first sale

Repeating as co-chairs of the sale, Community Church Crafters Kathy Blevins and Charlene Barton offer thanks to “everyone for donations, all volunteers and most especially the faithful shoppers that come year after year that make this community event so successful.”

Tony Gibbons, Loudon County Habitat for Humanity executive director said, “The less than perfect weather conditions did not dampen the spirit and enthusiasm of those at our recent community garage sale. On behalf of all of us here at Loudon County Habitat, we extend our gratitude to the Community Church Crafters who partner with us, the Community Church at Tellico Village for the use of their facilities, and of course all the volunteers, donors and shoppers for making this such a great event.”

Gibbons said Crafters Blevins and Barton along with Sammie Shanks, Habitat volunteer coordinator, organize the event. Shanks added her appreciation by saying, “Because of the contributions of many generous donors and eager-to-help volunteers, more families in our community will receive assistance from Loudon County Habitat and the various charities supported by the Crafters.”

Loudon County Habitat for Humanity is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a worldwide Christian housing organization. All funds to build in Loudon County are raised locally to provide safe, affordable houses for low-income families who are willing to partner with Habitat. These partner families help build their houses and then buy them from Habitat through an affordable mortgage. Funds from these mortgages go into a Fund for Humanity which allows Habitat to build other houses. THANKSGIVING DAY BLESSINGS

On Nov. 28, Americans will gather with family and friends for our nation’s annual commemoration of the peaceful, friendly feast between English settlers (Pilgrims) and the native Wampanoag people. As it was in 1621, Thanksgiving Day remains a time for reflection, and many families like to circle the dinner table with each member citing the blessing for which they are most grateful.

Kids might mention possessions, school achievements or friends. Adults might list family, good health or success. If you were at that table, what would you cite as your treasure – grandchildren, a fulfilling career or relationship, a healthy bank account?

We tend to dwell on our victories and successes, and rightly so, but much of what we treasure today did not materialize without some heartache yesterday. A loving family typically isn’t without some difficult days of the past, or even the present. A successful career invariably has its bumps and disappointments. A happy life does not occur without trials and tribulations.

We have all experienced difficulties in our lives – regrets, setbacks, trauma, loneliness and grief. Can you think of certain events that helped you learn, grow and succeed? How did you persevere? What principles did you learn, or in what way did your life benefit?

The truth is our lives travel winding, often troubled, roads. And we should acknowledge gratitude for not just blessings but the challenges that allowed us to learn, grow and succeed.

The journey of some is more difficult than the journey of others. Why? To answer this, it is important that we find answers to a second very important question: is it all fate, or is there a God of the universe?

What if there is a God who is all-knowing and all-powerful. What if there is no situation or circumstance that is beyond His ability to control? If so, we can be assured that there is always hope. And, if there is, we should be encouraged to seek His wisdom to appreciate the good in whatever happens.

And we should extend our gratitude to Him. Take a moment to demonstrate your gratitude to God by simply praying and telling Him. God is waiting and would love to hear from you. If you seek God, you will find Him. No matter how far you’ve walked from Him, He is always just a single step away; turn and meet Him.

First Baptist Church Tellico Village (FBCTV), led by Pastor David Talley and Pastor Kem Lindsay, can help you on your road to healing and spiritual growth. We are a friendly and welcoming community of believers grateful for God’s providence. Together, we

THANKS and GIVING

At this time of year, I often think back to my elementary school days when we learned about the first Thanksgiving. I don’t think it really registered at that time that the Pilgrims had left their homeland due to religious persecution. We mostly focused in on the turkey – making all kinds of turkey crafts – and singing songs. All this was just the precursor of that big Thanksgiving feast where we literally seemed to eat all day!

Indeed, the Pilgrims had much to be thankful for. They had left family, friends and worldly goods behind in order to travel to an unknown land. Just a safe arrival after weeks at sea was enough to be grateful for. But they were able to make friends with the local Indians, establish shelter and reap a bountiful harvest. It is no wonder that they found it fitting to celebrate and share their bounty with the locals.

In 1863, in the midst of the horrible Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln declared that a federal holiday called “Thanksgiving” be celebrated each year in November. Wow! What timing! President Lincoln took that opportunity to plead with the Americans to ask God to “commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife”. It was a great way to steer the public’s attention away from themselves and the war and focus on those around them who were not as fortunate.

Not much has changed in all these many years! We all have good days and bad days. The world still has pockets of war and destruction. And so many folks have experienced death or despair, financial hardships or personal agony. But in the midst of all the turmoil there are still the joys of gratitude and God’s blessings surrounding us. We most always have something to be thankful for.

With our annual Thanksgiving celebration soon upon us, let’s not forget to be thankful for all that is good in our lives. But let’s also not forget to be giving. Your generosity at any time of year, whether it is a donation of time, talents, money or material goods, may just be the “light” that someone living through a “dark” time may need. Thanks and giving, most certainly, go hand in hand!

Get Your Expensive Rugs Ready for the Holidays

Feel free to call me at 865-691-5686 for further advice.

The holidays are here and, with family and friends over for meals and fun, the spills or unexpected “items” on your one-of-a-kind Oriental rug are bound to happen. For serious stains or dirt, a professional Oriental rug cleaning company like Superior Rug Cleaning is 100 percent necessary but, what if you want to maintain your expensive rug or clean up accidents? We asked the expert, Kerry McDuffie, at Superior Rug Cleaning to give us some tips for keeping your expensive Oriental rug clean.

Kerry’s Expert Rug Maintenance and Cleaning Tips:

Vacuum your rug regularly and, if possible, flip the rug over and vacuum the back of it, too. The vibration will sift loose soil to the front of rug. Turn the rug over again and then vacuum off the top one more time.

Rotate the position of the rug every few months, if possible, so that the higher traffic part is in a different place.

Remove spots as soon as they occur. The longer something that can stain the rug remains in the fibers, the more difficult it can be to remove them later.

Blot up spills using just water first. I don’t recommend using Resolve or OxiClean on rug stains as these products are de signed for laundry, and it can take copious amounts of water to flush them out of the rug once they are there.

Next month Kerry will have some tips for spot cleaning of pet urine!

If your Oriental rug needs an expert touch, be sure to call Kerry at Superior Rug Cleaning. Superior Rugs believes that properly caring for your Oriental rug requires more than just a carpet cleaning machine. That’s why we have a 12-step cleaning process, where we first determine the exact fiber content and dyes used, then take the rug to our specialized facility, wash it in pure, deionized cold water in a wool-safe solution. Once the rug is washed, we give it a thorough rinse and hang it to dry in our temperature-controlled drying room.

Whether it’s in your home or place of business, our cleaning process is sure to put that extra magic back into your handmade Oriental rug. We’ve had hundreds of satisfied customers walk through our doors over the years, and we’re excited to add you

Childhood Development in Loudon & Monroe Counties

The Tellico Community Foundation (TCF) has chosen improvement in Childhood Development in Loudon and Monroe Counties as one of its focus areas for grantmaking. TCF believes that the future of our society relies on the education of the youth today.

It is our belief that, for children to thrive, they must be proficient in reading and math at a very early age. The prime time for learning these basic skills-- reading and math-- is between the ages of birth to about nine years old (fourth grade). Our education system is geared to teach those skills during that time; however, if those skills are not learned by then, most likely the child will struggle throughout the rest of his education and possibly never “catch up.”

Data collected in May 2023 by the Annie E Casey Foundation for Loudon and Monroe Counties shows that approximately 70% of the children in grades third through eighth are not proficient in reading and math, meaning they cannot read at grade level. After fourth grade, those basic skills of reading and math are required to continue the education process. Literature, history, economics and other disciplines require literacy, and the teachers in the higher grades often do not have the time or resources to teach those basic skills required to succeed.

The TCF Advisory Board believes that focusing our resources with agencies and organizations that work with children between birth and fifth grade can alleviate some of the issues. By supporting outcome-focused programs operated by non-profit agencies and organizations, we believe we can positively impact, in a measurable way, children’s reading and math abilities before they reach fifth grade.

Advisory board members from Tellico Community Foundation are available to discuss this important focus area with organizations who may need funding to address early childhood education, and to schedule individual meetings with potential donors to share our grantmaking goals and donation options.

About Tellico Community Foundation

The Tellico Community Foundation is an affiliate fund at the East Tennessee Foundation created to support the citizens and residents of Loudon and Monroe counties. It was established in 2017, to enrich the Loudon and Monroe County communities by funding programs and projects that provide support for seniors and promote healthy childhood development. Since inception, we have awarded grants of more than $300,000 to organizations that serve our communities. Sixty percent of all funds donated

to the TCF are allocated to our endowment, with the goal of building a long-term sustainable fund for grantmaking. To learn more or to become involved: www.tellicolife. org/tellico-community-foundation. To donate now, please

Your LTC Answer Might Already Be in Your Portfolio

Are you paying for a cash value life insurance policy you don’t really need anymore? Or perhaps you have a variable annuity, but aren’t sure what to do with it? Well, good news on both fronts! You can use a friendly little IRS rule, called a 1035 exchange, that allows you to trade a current cash value life insurance or annuity policy for a different insurance product and not pay any tax on the trade.

My favorite strategy is to exchange them for an asset-based long-term care policy. This is not your typical traditional LTC policy, with all of its inherent drawbacks. This is a policy you fund once, with the 1035 exchange, and there are no further premium payments. It provides

you with an enhanced pool of tax-free LTC dollars that you can use for home health care, assisted living, or full skilled care. And, if you don’t ever need it for LTC costs, it has a death benefit that passes to your heirs. It solves the “use it or lose it” drawback of traditional LTC insurance, and since you pay once-and-done, there’s no fear of increasing annual premiums.

This tax-free 1035 exchange process has lots of tax advantages. Normally, the cash value of a life insurance policy and the accumulation value of an annuity has interest that is taxable if you take it out. But when you exchange it for an asset-based LTC policy, the LTC benefits are tax-free and the death benefit is tax-free. Voila! The taxable interest has disappeared! Note that this strategy does not apply to term insurance, which has no cash value. And if you don’t have an existing insurance policy to exchange, you can still purchase this type of LTC policy with non-retirement money, or even pay for it over a period of time.

Beyond the tax benefits, an asset-based LTC policy truly solves retirees’ most vexing dilemma: how do you protect yourself from the lurking financial drain of LTC costs, while still being able to confidently enjoy your retirement? A 2023 Genworth study found, in Loudon

County, the average monthly cost of home health care is $5,434, assisted living is $4,825, and full skilled care is $8,851. Hoping for good health is not an LTC strategy – why risk your hard-earned assets, or put your adult children in a financial bind, when easy solutions are out there waiting for you?

Next, your digital scan is used to create your custom aligners. Your custom aligners are carefully designed to gently shift your teeth in stages to achieve your desired smile. Patients typically wear aligners for a minimum of 20 hours per day and replace aligners at two-week intervals during the treatment period. Because each of our teeth is surrounded by periodontal ligaments that permit controlled movement at the teeth, Invisalign aligners gently realign your teeth by shifting them to the new desired location. The Famous Bacons of Tellico Village

Such a title may be a bit misleading. Colonel Charles H. Bacon and his lovely wife

Betty died long before there was a Tellico Dam, Lake or Village; nevertheless, my Mountain Views article a year ago touted them as the most prominent family to ever live and farm in the lands now known as Mialaquo and Chota neighborhoods. Their mansion and “Upper Farm” were off Fork Creek where present day Oostagala Lane runs through Mialaquo. Their “Lower Farm” was named Maple Hill and spread almost to where the Yacht Club sits today.

Colonel Bacon operated three hosiery mills during the middle of the 20th Century - two in Loudon and one in Lenoir City - supplying hundreds of jobs to Loudon Countians. With his vast dairy herds grazing the aforementioned farms, he was able to open the Bacon Creamery in Loudon, which ultimately sold out to Mayfields. The football field and the hospital were named for him. He had numerous other ventures and was a well-respected leader in politics, church and civic affairs. The storybook lives of the Bacons included some other bizarre tales which the wise elders still tell today.

One such tale involved the Richard Jackson home on Commerce Street in Loudon, built about 1850. Col. Bacon’s father was a Democrat and a friend of Mr. Jackson. In 1892, they bet on the outcome of the presidential election. The back story to this is that Grover Cleveland had been elected president in 1884 as the Democrat nominee; however, during his reelection campaign in 1888, he lost to the Republican Benjamin Harrison, a former Civil War general and grandson of President William Henry Harrison. So, in 1892 Cleveland returned in a third race for the White House, against the incumbent Harrrison. Nathaniel Bacon placed his bet on Cleveland, while Richard Jackson backed the Republican incumbent, Harrison. I surmise there were adult beverages involved in the wager, as the bet was for ownership of Mr. Jackson’s fine antebellum home! Alas, Cleveland won, and Mr. Bacon took title to his friend’s house. He gave it to his son Charles and Miss Betty Mourfield as a wedding gift, and they lived there for a number of years before building their palatial estate in current-day Tellico Village.

Colonel Bacon owned a Tennessee Walking horse named Strolling Jim. Not just any horse, but the first Grand Champion walking horse in the entire world. Strolling Jim won in the first year of competition, 1939. In that same year he won 12 straight walking horse Sweepstake Class awards. Again in 1940, the outstanding chestnut gelding won another 12 consecutive awards along with being crowned the Tennessee Grand Champion.

When building their magnificent home at the upper farm, the Bacons spared no expense, purchasing expensive marble and furnishing the home with elegant decor. Miss Betty took a trip to New York City with the colonel where they shopped for an impressive mantel for their main living room fireplace, presumably at a swanky Manhattan retail outlet. Months later when it arrived, the crate indicated it had been crafted at the J.E. Lutz Manufacturing Company in Loudon, Tennessee. Low and behold, they’d traveled to New York to buy the finest mantel money could buy. Little did they know it would be built by Colonel Bacon’s associate and fellow industrialist, in a factory only a few yards upriver from the Bacon Hosiery Mill.

East Tennessee Area Wildlife: AUTUMN

Photographing the beauty of Tennessee, and the wildlife who call it home.

Autumn is my favorite season and not just because I enjoy cooler weather and the pretty landscapes with the changing leaves! This is my favorite time to be out taking photos because some animals are very active right before winter while they try to put on extra weight. Also, wildlife such as deer, bobcats, great horned owls, or eagles are bonding with their mates in preparation for spring and yes, they do start gearing up this early! I’m usually out right at dawn driving back roads during this season or up in the mountains breathing in the cool crisp air and enjoying every second of it before the leaves are gone. It’s a wonderful time to be out and I hope you enjoy it as well!

Christmas is also right around the corner, and I sell most canvas, prints, magnets and calendars during this time of year. If you’d like to purchase any of my wall art, you can simply go to my website www. kalleycook.smugmug.com or you browse through my galleries on my website and if you aren’t sure what to get yourself or for a friend, you can email me and we can figure it out together. For magnets, calendars and prints please directly contact me at Kalleybcook@gmail.com.

I want to also tell everyone a Happy early Thanksgiving! Contact: Kalleybcook@gmail.com https://www.facebook.com/ kalleycookphotography

In the Garden November

Hooray for fall! I’m so grateful for cooler temperatures. If you put off your fall gardening, let’s do a quick recap of what needs to be done:

• Do your yard checkup. Our temperature variations can be hard on plants, and some of them are showing stress, making them more vulnerable to insects and disease.

• After the checkup comes the cleanup. Pull annuals, clean up perennials, pull weeds, and apply fresh mulch if needed. This will help prevent the reemergence of disease and insects next year. Consider mulching your leaves instead of bagging them. We run over ours with a lawnmower and then blow them onto flower beds. The chopped leaves work as both a mulch and a fertilizer and will provide winter protection for pollinator bees.

NOVEMBER 23RD

• You can still plant pansies, violas, snapdragons, and ornamental cabbage for fall and winter color. The pansies, violas, and cabbage will last until next spring, and snapdragons will go as cold as 25º. Several perennials are evergreen and will last through the winter in beds or containers.

• Clean and protect any containers that are not frost proof. If they’re for outdoor use yearround, get creative with your fall and winter plantings. Stop by if you need help.

• Planting trees and shrubs during this dormant season means that all the plant’s focus can go into developing roots. If you’re planting trees and shrubs, I cannot overemphasize how important it is to do it correctly.

1. Dig a hole no deeper than the root ball but twice as wide. Make sure your language is appropriate if small children are in the area.

2. Mix the soil that you’re removing from the hole with topsoil or planting mix until it is about half and half. (Note: Do NOT use potting soil. Potting soil is for pots.) Use this to backfill around the plant. Some say that amendments are not needed, but to me this is only true if you’re planting in what would be their native soil. Rhododendrons, for example, grow in the mountains where it is shady and cool and thousands of years’ worth of leaf mold. Your building lot that was scraped clean of all topsoil does not work the same.

3. Take the plant out of the container and loosen the root ball. Dig your fingers or a cultivator in and pull those roots loose! If the roots are going around the rim in a circle, take a saw and cut the outer 1/2” off the root ball. If the plant is balled and burlaped, push the burlap to the bottom of the hole or remove it entirely. If you don’t remove the wire cage and you ever need to have the stump ground, it will destroy a stump grinder.

4. Place your plant so the top of the root ball is level with or slightly above the surface of the ground. Backfill with your soil mixture and firm it into place. It’s

ok to have some room for air, but keep a little of the backfill mixture to add more to the hole if/when it settles.

5. Water the plants using a root stimulator to speed up the establishment of feeder roots. Water the plant throughout the winter if we’re not getting 1” or more of rainfall per week. Some of you will have irrigation systems turned off, but please leave some way of watering newer plants if our winter happens to be dry. Soaker hoses or hand watering ensures adequate saturation.

6. Add mulch, but please don’t pile the mulch around the trunk of a tree. Mulch keeps the temperature and moisture levels stable and protects the trunk from lawn mower and weed whacker damage. If mulch is heaped around the trunk, however, it causes air roots and insect/rodent damage.

Next month I’ll talk about holiday plants and greenery and how to care for them.

Since some of you may purchase your plants before then, here are a few words of advice:

• Whether you’re buying Christmas trees or poinsettias, buy from a reputable dealer! Mass market trees are frequently cut before Halloween, and most box/grocery store poinsettias are doomed due to lack of care knowledge.

• If you have questions about how to care for your plants, please ask us! That’s what we’re here for. With proper care, your tree should last until the New Year and your poinsettia should last until you get sick of it and throw it away. Neither are hard to care for, but both have some critical steps you must follow.

• Stop by and see us for all your holiday needs!

Garage Flooring: Make Sure It’s Durable

Garage remodeling is currently the fastest-growing segment of the home-improvement industry. It’s a separate room - and often the largest room in the house - that is not only a place to park a car, but can be used as a workshop, storage for items that won’t go in the house, or an area to enjoy hobbies.

To give a garage a finished look and make it a more user-friendly space that’s easy to clean, renovations usually include a floor coating.

While there are a few flooring options, the decision usually comes down to a choice between a standard epoxy or PremierOne’s polyurea coating, developed and professionally installed by PremierGarage of Knoxville, doing business in Tellico for more than 15 years.

Do-it-yourself epoxy kits are widely available and easy to work with. The downside is many things can go wrong while applying the coating. The epoxy may not set properly or have a weak bond to the concrete, and it takes a long time for the epoxy to dry and bond to the floor. And while the cost of epoxy is initially less expensive, epoxy also quickly delaminates when a vehicle’s hot tire bonds to the surface and peels it away from the concrete.

“There have been many improvements in coating technology over the past 20 years and the preferred garage flooring is our polyurea coating,” explained Brain Falls, co-owner of PremierGarage of Knoxville. “Polyurea is a hard-wearing coating that’s widely specified in commercial settings where failure is not an option and floors

are designed to last the test of time.”

For the longest lasting concrete floor coating in the market, PremierGarage of Knoxville technicians diamond-grind the floor to the ideal surface condition to achieve a permanent chemical bond. Other primary benefits of PremierGarage’s professionally installed flooring coating over epoxy is:

>> Superior finish that cures two times harder, eliminating unsightly marks, peeling or blistering from hot tires and abrasions

» Chemical, UV, stain and slip-resistant

» Commercial-grade product that is guaranteed for 10 years

» Easy to clean

Available in a variety of colors, the flooring system is also perfect for concrete flooring in basements, front porches, and retail stores. In addition, our new hybrid color options provide an artistic dimension with its unique blend of multiple flake sizes and an array of individually colored flakes. Thanksgiving is the perfect time to reflect on all the things we typically take for granted throughout the year. And that includes our capacity to hear.

While sight, taste, and smell are at the forefront of our mind during the holidays, hearing often takes a back seat—that is, until we begin paying greater attention. To completely enjoy the holiday season calls for being fully present, and that includes being alert to all the sounds that in most cases escape our full attention.

Here are five sounds to be thankful for this Thanksgiving:

The sound of food sizzling – You can’t match the smell of roasting turkey filling the house, but have you ever paused to appreciate the sounds of a lively kitchen with food popping and sizzling and timers going off? With a house filled with hungry guests, you’re especially not going to want to miss those timers.

Conversations around the dining table – The holiday season is a chance to bring everyone together for stimulating conversation. You won’t want to miss any big news or humorous stories from the family members you rarely get to see.

Thanksgiving Day football – To the dismay of many non-football fans, the NFL has somehow incorporated itself into the holiday traditions. But for the sports fans in the family, the sounds of the crowd, the big hits, and the eruption after a touchdown are difficult to match in intensity.

Thanksgiving Day parades – The sound of marching bands and cheering crowds in the background is an essential part of Thanksgiving Day. You don’t want to miss the cheer of Santa Claus at the end of the parade!

Holiday movies – Has anybody ever not eaten too much at Thanksgiving dinner? After the heavy tryptophan-filled meal and lots of socializing, it’s nice to unwind, relax, and watch your favorite movies.

Unfortunately, hearing loss can eliminate several of these sounds. Missing out on important conversations, or not being able to hear the dialogue in movies, brings about stress and anxiousness that should have no part in the holiday celebrations.

It’s time to take back your holiday season—book your FREE hearing test today! Tellico Hearing Solutions, PLLC 865-635-1887 contact@TellicoHearingSolutions.com www.tellicohearingsolutions.com

Expert Tips for Conquering Winter Clutter in Your Entryway

Entryways are notorious for their clutter, with an assortment of items passing through the front door, including shoes, bags, keys, groceries, and more. Winter weather compounds the chaos with mud, rain, snow, and wet garments. The Tailored Closet combines expert advice from online sources and their own design expertise to provide practical ideas for maintaining an organized and functional entryway during the winter months.

When it comes to entryway organization, common solutions include hooks, shelves, baskets, cubbies, hangers, and rugs. However, not every entryway requires all of these solutions. Here are several tips to create a clutter-free entryway tailored to your needs:

1. Hooks for Every Occasion: Choose hooks suitable for different purposes, such as keys, coats, or backpacks. This ensures efficient use of space and secure storage. Customize your hooks based on family members’ heights, assign hooks to individuals to prevent conflicts, and use fun hooks for kids. Additionally, having enough hooks allows wet garments to dry fully. Consider adding standing

coat racks or over-the-door racks for extra hanging space during wet seasons.

2. Control the Clutter with Baskets and Bins: While hooks handle much of the clutter, smaller items like bags, sports equipment, and phones can pile up. Utilize dec-

orative baskets and bins to keep these items organized and easily accessible. Assign a sturdy bin to each family member, place an umbrella stand near the door, and use divided trays for frequently misplaced items.

3. Managing Muddy Footwear: Muddy boots and shoes are a common issue during winter. Address this problem by providing enough space for everyone’s footwear. Consider shoe cubbies for individual storage, place a tray or bin near the door for dirty footwear, and use a boot tray filled with stones to prevent puddles. Keep towels nearby for cleaning pets’ paws and providing slippers for comfort. A boot scraper can help keep dirt and mud from entering the house.

4. Have a Seat: Having a designated area for taking off wet footwear is essential. A bench can serve as a seating area and storage space, offering drawers or cubbies for shoe storage. In the absence of a bench, a chair can also serve as a designated spot for removing and putting on shoes.

5. Multi-Purpose Rugs: Rugs in the entryway help maintain a cleaner home, especially during winter. Invest in heavy-duty rugs or mats on both sides of the door to prevent dirt and moisture from entering. Dark-colored rugs are more stain-resistant, and placing rugs or mats near benches and drying racks helps absorb drips.

6. Custom Entryway Design: Consider consulting The Tailored Closet for custom storage solutions to enhance your entryway. Custom solutions can save your floors and your sanity, making winter more manageable and stylish. Schedule a free in-home or virtual consultation through their website to address your entryway and other home organization needs.

In conclusion, a well-organized entryway can make a significant difference in managing the challenges of winter. By customizing your storage solutions to your family’s needs and implementing the right hooks, bins, and furniture, you can ensure that your entryway remains functional, organized, and inviting throughout the season.
