This month, we had the opportunity to interview Josh Peters, owner of Groovy Hues of Greater Knoxville. If you’ve passed their beautiful vehicles on the road and wondered what they do, Groovy Hues is a “fresh” business in West Knoxville focused on improving the appeal of your home (or business!) through painting, staining, wallpapering, power wash, and soft wash.

MV: Tell us a little about yourself and Groovy Hues.

Josh: Glad to! I am a resident of West Knoxville. My wife and I planted roots here 10 years ago after the birth of our first child to be closer to Knoxville-area friends and family. Now with three children, we can be found on any given weeknight or weekend with friends at parks, on hiking or mountain bike trails, deep in a kimura at the jiu jitsu academy, deep in rough on some golf course, or deep in thought over a coffee shop latte (perhaps enjoying our customers’ thoughtful reviews!).

I entrust day-to-day operations to my General Manager, Brandi Wheaton, and my Operations Manager, Will Whittaker — a pair that bring the best of customer service, product and process knowledge, and dedication to quality work and communication. And while we are locally owned and operated, we are part of a national franchise that provides access to nationally-negotiated pricing, advanced software and training, and other benefits that come from scale.

MV: What services do you provide?

Josh: We provide full service residential or commercial interior and exterior painting and staining, as well as wallpapering, power washing, and soft washing. We also offer what we call the Custom Curb Appeal program—a facelift that extends beyond just painting and power washing to improve your home’s vibe and value. With our team, you’ll have access to expert guidance and support from start to finish. Our team can help you choose

the perfect colors, finishes, and techniques that will bring your vision to life. Your satisfaction is our top priority, and we strive to provide top-quality results that you’ll love for years to come.

MV: Do you clean roofs and what process do you use to protect them?

Josh: Yes, absolutely, we clean roofs. We’ve all seen houses with those unpleasant dark streaks on roof shingles. What many don’t know is that these are often caused by a type of bacteria that feeds on materials in the shingles and can cause damage over time. Power washing is typically ineffective against the bacteria while also causing further damage to shingles. Our process is to kill the bacteria with safe and environmentally friendly chemicals in a process known as a “soft wash.” Soft washing is preferred whenever dealing with living organisms (e.g., lichen, algae, moss, and gloeocapsa magma) or more sensitive substrates (e.g., wood and siding). We also

make sure that we protect both the siding and all vegetation around the house.

MV: Can you tell us about your painting process?

Josh: As part of the free estimating process, we walk the job asking questions to ensure that we understand what the homeowner would like to achieve and what is important to them. The type of paint and colors that are needed are determined at the time of the estimate and we only use top quality paints and stains. Once scheduled, we show up as promised, ready to get any project started, no matter the size. Every painting project is assigned a project manager who communicates with the customer and oversees every detail. We fully protect the area with thorough covering of furniture and flooring. At the conclusion of the job, the project manager and homeowner will walk over the project and do a thorough inspection. Only once the customer is satisfied are they invoiced.

We stand behind our work comes with a 2-year guarantee, ensuring that our customers remain satisfied.

MV: How firm are your estimates?

Josh: First of all, our estimates and consultations are free. Many companies price high and offer discounts; we do our best to price reasonably the first time. When working to fit a budget, we have many options, including adjustments to scope, paint selections, and even scheduling! We also offer same day financing as an option to spread payments, as many of our customers are familiar with from other past investments. But as much as we’d like to accommodate everyone, there are times that we can’t match a price; we take pride in both happy customers and quality workmanship; to stand behind our work as we do, we won’t cut corners.

MV: Can you tell us a little about your company culture?

October Insights From the Publisher

As I write this, I am sitting on my porch swing on my deck overlooking the woods behind our home. This is my happy place! The leaves are beginning to change, and I know that soon the rich, vibrant colors of fall will take over the landscape.

The pre-holiday season has begun, and from now until January, so many activities will be focused on holiday events and preparations. From October’s Harvest festivals and November’s Thanksgiving family dinners to December’s Christmas gift exchanges and New Year’s celebrations, it is a very busy three months. And all our advertisers help to make your preparations less stressful by highlighting products and services that will enhance your holiday time with friends and family. This edition of East Tennessee’s Mountain Views is packed with helpful information, as well as product and service descriptions that can benefit you, our readers, during these holiday months. What do you need to do to get ready?

MV: What are your hours?

MV: How do customers get started with you?

You may notice a repeated theme in this month’s issue: the beautiful colors of Fall in East Tennessee. For many, this is their favorite time of year, however brief this vibrant spectacle may be, even though it leads to a barren season which then makes us yearn for Spring. Fall is about change; shedding of the old, preparing for the new.

But most of us don’t like change. It’s hard. Many of us shy away from it, even when we know it’s for the better – in favor of staying in our comfort zone, in favor of what’s familiar.

As I sit on my swing, drinking in the beauty of nature, I am reminded that God is the creator of all, and He never changes. Maybe the beauty and splendor of fall, especially here in East Tennessee, is God reminding us that change can be beautiful if we embrace it and count our blessings. Getting out of our comfort zone can lead to new experiences and new personal growth.

Josh: Our company culture is a reflection of who we are as individuals. I think you get a great sense for who we are in our Google review commentary which often spans paragraphs. We take great pride in not only WHAT we do but HOW we do it. We get our satisfaction from happy customers and from knowing that we did right by them on every job, whether or not they even notice.

Josh: Monday- Friday 8am-5pm. We are closed on major holidays.

So, enjoy fall. Enjoy the beautiful colors of nature and the cooler weather. And remember that change can lead to something beautiful.

Important Conversations for Caregivers - Part 3

Welcome back to the Our PLACE monthly update! Again, we hope you and your friends are lacing up your sneakers to join us on our annual event: Walk 2 Remember & Car Show, October 5, 2024, from 9:30 AM12:30 PM, at Lenoir City Park, benefitting Our PLACE

This event provides an excellent chance to have a great time while supporting a great cause and our program participants. A special shout out to all of the sponsors, walking teams, and classic car owners who have already signed up to support us with such generosity.

If you know of anyone who is wrestling with Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases, please tell them about Our PLACE. With our recent facility expansion, we are ready to accept more participants into our Alzheimer/Dementia Day Center Programs. Please contact our Executive Director, Sarah Martin, at 865-757-7222 for more information!=

I promised to follow up on details caregivers need to consider as end of life approaches. Previously, we discussed documents, finances, and accessing benefits for your loved

one. This month, we will finish up with those personal wishes to share with each other and family. Then we’ll learn about another of our “Moment of Joy” individuals who attends Our PLACE.

We all accumulate “stuff” but some items have great meaning to us. Write them down, explain the meaning, and decide who should receive it. If you have young children or care for young grandchildren, list pertinent information about them, such as: their name, health concerns, doctor, dentist, hobbies, etc. Consider writing a letter to them to express your thoughts on their meaning in your life, what you are most proud of, and what your hopes and dreams are for them. Ask, as a caregiver, what your loved one wants in their last days. What would they like in their room, who would they want to have visit, are there friends or family they would like to be called?

I hope some of the topics we’ve shared will relieve you from anxiety and confusion, before you have to make difficult decisions. Continue to celebrate those Moments of Joy you share together. And speaking of Moments of Joy, our participant this month is Jim, who has been attending Our PLACE for three months. Jim earned degrees in Forestry and Wildlife Management from the University of Michigan and has always had a great love of the outdoors. He is married to his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Ellie, for 66 years. Jim worked for the TVA and TWRA in Natural Resources Planning and continued to share his love of nature after retirement by leading weekly hiking groups in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, volunteering at Cades Cove, and the Heritage Center in Townsend. Ellie worked as a secretary while raising two daughters, and later volunteered for 18 years in the Friends of the Smokies office. They operated the Snowbird Mountain Lodge in Robbinsville NC for four years. Ellie sought out Our PLACE for Jim to foster a sense of community and friendship for him. She was not sure how he felt about the program, but after the fourth visit, he was all in. He enjoys the smiles of other participants and staff in the program, the games, singing, and joining in activities with his friends. Knowing that Jim is safe and cared for, Ellie is able to chat with neighbors, shop, meet friends and reconnect, with peace of mind. Seeing the love that is evident when they reunite at the end of the day is truly a Moment of Joy!

JOur PLACE is an independent, 501C(3) nonprofit that seeks to improve quality of life by providing a day program of social interaction, enrichment, and therapeutic activities in a safe and nurturing environment for adults living with Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases..

Dealing With Regret

Regret is defined as feeling sad, repentant, or disappointed over something that has happened or been done – especially a loss or missed opportunity. Everyone has regrets of some type or degree, and it is generally accepted that such feelings are invariably negative, some even emotionally crippling.

Regret can often be avoided, possibly prevented altogether, by better decision-making and less impulsiveness or emotionalism. Nido R. Qubein, president of High Point University, says, “The price of discipline is always less than the pain of regret.” Motivational speaker Jim Rohn observed that “Discipline weighs ounces while regret weighs tons.”

But the truth is that to err is human, and with it usually comes regret.

How does the Bible weigh in on regret and how to counter it? 1 John 1:9 encourages us that “if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins (regrets) and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” While 2 Corinthians 7:10 says, “For godly sorrow produces repentance, leading to salvation, not to be regretted, but the sorrow of the world produces death.”

With our Heavenly Father’s help, regrets can not only be eradicated but forgiven, forgotten, and cleansed. He has promised to not only wipe away all our sins, mistakes, missteps, etc. but to restore us by washing away all evidence and penalties for every one of them. And, lastly, the apostle Paul encourages us in Philippians 3:13: “Now, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead.”

Doesn’t it sound infinitely better to have all our regrets confessed, forgotten, and cleansed rather than have them influence us throughout, not just this life but all eternity? Our Heavenly Father wants us always to look forward, focused on the prize He has set before us – eternal salvation. What a wonderful, supporting, forgiving God we serve!

First Baptist Church Tellico Village (FBCTV), led by Pastor David Talley and Pastor Kem Lindsay, can help you on your road to healing and spiritual growth. We are a friendly and welcoming community of believers with plenty of regrets. We have our own stories full of “would’ve, could’ve, should’ve” moments. We understand failure, and we are learning to bring it all to the Lord, seeking the Lord’s comfort, healing, acceptance, and contentment.

Heal and grow spiritually with us by attending – or watching online – our Sunday service each week at 10:30 am. In addition, FBCTV offers a variety of classes, studies, and programs to help navigate the challenges of today’s hectic and often confusing world. Visit FBCTV.com for more information.

Celebrating Reformation

Last month our congregation celebrated its tenth anniversary. This month, we have another anniversary to celebrate.

On October 31st, we will celebrate the 507th anniversary of the Reformation. Halloween is an odd time to celebrate a Church anniversary you might think, and you have a point. Quite honestly, it’s pretty hard to get children to focus on the history of the Reformation with Halloween going on at the same time. But we are wedded to history, and it was on Halloween night in 1517 that Martin Luther is said to have nailed his 95 theses on the door of the castle Church in Wittenburg Germany, thus symbolically beginning the Protestant Reformation. He did this because the next day is All Saint’s Day, and he wanted to post his theses in time for all the Church goers to see them.

Luther, at the time, was not intending to split the Church or create a new Church. His theses were a call to debate and hopefully for change. The Church in the Middle Ages had become corrupt and misled. Most importantly Christ, grace, faith, and the scriptures were no longer at the center of the Church’s message and practice.

God works in mysterious ways. A German monk nailing some thoughts to a door 507 years ago led to a little Church in Tellico Village still having the name Lutheran on our sign. Even though a lot of people might not know the history, and might even be confused or thrown off by the name “Lutheran” (it is a little too close to “Lucifer” for good marketing practices), we still keep the name because we are still trying to do what Luther was trying to do, which is to keep Christ, grace, faith and the scriptures at the heart of all we do as a community. When we can do that, we tend to see that things go well.

We don’t celebrate the Reformation as a victory of one Church over another. We celebrate it because it is one example of how God keeps showing up to reform Churches, but also individuals. The Holy Spirit reforms hearts and minds so that we can live the lives we were intended by God to live, and that is surely something to celebrate. We invite you this month to come and see what God is up to in our little community of faith. All are welcome to come and worship and also to participate in Holy Communion. We celebrate an open table because it is a reflection that God’s grace is available for

First Baptist Church Of Tellico Village 205 Chota Road, Loudon, TN 37774 (865) 408-0110

everyone. Our service is easy to follow and everything you need to know is right in the bulletin. (That part was real important to me when I became a Lutheran, as I don’t like surprises). Basically, first you sit, then you stand, then you sit, then you stand, then you shake hands with the people around you, sit, take communion, stand, and then come have coffee and donuts in the fellowship hall. Also, if you have trouble standing up that part is optional too. For 507 years now as we have been standing and sitting and taking communion, the Holy Spirit has been coming to reform and bless lives, and for that we are indeed thankful. Happy Reformation month, and please do come see us.

CELEBRATING
Pastor Dave’s prayer: “Lord, we thank you that you are a God who moves toward us in all our failures and sins. Thank you for the healing only you can bring. We put our eyes on you in hope. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.”

Pet Urine, Spills, and Your Expensive Oriental Rug!

You ve hand-picked the perfect Oriental rug for your living space. Then, oops, a spill happens, or you discover a wet spot left as a “special” gift from your beloved pet! Not only can the spill or urine harm the rug, it can also do significant damage to your floor underneath the rug. What do you do?

There are a couple of things you can do. First, before the

inevitable wet spot even happens, call Kerry at Superior Rug Cleaning (865-691-5686) to have a custom rug pad installed under your rug. It’s important to use a rug pad that protects you, your floors, and your rug. The wrong rug pad can cause damage to the floors, allow the rug to slip, roll, and slide, and might even be toxic. Superior Rug Cleaning installs pads that are waterproof, pet and child friendly, odorless, and are guaranteed washable for the life of the rug.

Second, if have a current spill or pet urine stain that you are dealing with, Kerry recommends you do the following:

1. Soak up the urine or spill immediately or as soon as possible.

2. Spray the area with a product called, “Nature’ s Miracle” (Liquid). This is one of the best products I have found for these types of spills. (Available for consumer purchase in stores.)

3. Blot the area and repeat spraying with Nature’ s Miracle, if needed

4. Spray the area with water and blot

If these steps don t get the area cleaned, call me at Superior Rug Cleaning - 865-691-5686. Many times, urine that has been there awhile will not come out with regular cleaning, it must be flushed professionally with special cleaning agents designed to remove the urea salts and ammonia smell. Sometimes even the yellow stain can lighten up.

Launched in 1985, for over 39 years Superior Rug Cleaning has focused specifically on pursuing and investing in new, state-of-the-art technology specifically to ensure your heirloom Oriental rug maintains its original beauty and quality.

Call or text Superior Rug Cleaning at 865-691-5686, email them at info@superiorofknoxville.com, or reach them on Facebook to schedule your carpet and rug cleanings today. Invest in your rug’s true potential and beauty today!

The Power of One Vote, Your Vote. Use It.

By the Smallest of Margins… In 1800 – Thomas Jefferson was elected President by one vote in the House of Representatives after a tie in the Electoral College.

In 1824 – Andrew Jackson won the presidential popular vote but lost by one vote in the House of Representatives to John Quincy Adams after an Electoral College dead-lock.

In 1846 – President Polk’s request for a Declaration of War against Mexico passed by one vote.

In 1867 – The Alaska purchase was ratified in the Senate by two votes: 37-2, paving the way for future statehood.

In 1868 – President Andrew Johnson was Impeached but not convicted because the Senate was one vote shy of the necessary two thirds required.

In 1876 – Samuel Tilden won the presidential popular vote but came up one electoral vote shy and lost to Rutherford B. Hayes.

In 1948 – A Texas Convention voted for Lyndon B. Johnson over ex-Governor Coke Steven in a contested Senatorial election.

In 1962 – Governors of Maine, Rhode Island and North Dakota were elected by an average of one vote per precinct.

In 1977 – Vermont State representative Sydney Nixon was seated as an apparent one vote winner, 570 to 569. Mr. Nixon resigned when the State House determined, after a recount, that he had actually lost to his opponent Robert Emond 572 to 571.

In 1994 – 1.1 votes per precinct in Alaska elected Tony Knowles as Governor and Fran Ulmer as Lieutenant Governor out of 216,668 votes cast in the General Election.

In 1994 – Republican Randall Luthi and Independent Larry Call tied for a seat in the Wyoming House of Representatives from the Jackson Hole area with 1,941 votes each. A recount produced the same result. Mr. Luthi was finally declared the winner when, in a drawing before the State Canvassing Board, a ping pong ball bearing his name was pulled from the cowboy hat of Democratic Governor Mike Sullivan.

In 1997 – Dakota Democrat John McIntyre led Republican Hal Wick 4,195 to 4,191 for the second seat in Legislative District 12 on election night. A subsequent recount showed Wick the winner at 4,192 to 4,191. The State Supreme Court however, ruled that one ballot counted for Wick was invalid due to an over-vote. This left the race a tie. After hearing arguments from both sides, the State Legislature voted to seat Wick 46 to 20.

In 2000 – The Presidential election was decided by an extremely narrow margin. George W. Bush won the state of Florida by just 537 votes, making him the next President of the United States. Close to 6 million voters went to the polls in Florida. It might not have been by one vote, but certainly every vote counted.

In 2006 – Connecticut’s 2nd U.S. Congressional seat was won by Joe Courtney with 121,252 votes to Rob Simmons’ 121,158; a difference of only 94 votes.

In 2008 – Stockton, California: The Stockton Unified School Trustee Area No. 3 seat was won by one vote.

Jose Morales received 2,302 votes while Anthony Silva received 2,301. In 2008 – Minnesota voters cast 2.9 million votes in their US Senate race that may be decided by as few as 200 votes (1/1000th of one %)

In 2010 – In Nevada, the Nye County Primary contest for County Commissioner District IV was a dead heat with both Butch Borasky and Carl Moore receiving 381 votes. In the Lincoln County Primary, the District Attorney rac e was decided by only 3 votes.

Medicare Changes are on the Way

The Medicare landscape is changing, and with the 2024 open enrollment period kicking off on October 15th, it’s the perfect time to make sure your plan is ready for what’s coming. Big changes are set for 2025, and whether you’re already satisfied with your coverage or wondering if there’s a better option, now’s the time to take action. Let’s dive into the latest updates so you can make the most of this year’s enrollment period to save money and enhance your coverage.

What’s Changing in 2025?

Medicare is evolving in 2025 with several changes designed to reduce costs and expand coverage. Some key updates include:

1. Lower Out-of-Pocket Prescription Drug Costs: One of the biggest updates is the implementation

of the $2,000 annual cap on out-of-pocket costs for prescription drugs under Part D. This change will provide significant relief to those who spend heavily on medications.

2. Phasing Out the “Donut Hole”: The coverage gap in Medicare Part D (often referred to as the “donut hole”) will continue shrinking, offering more consistent drug costs throughout the year.

3. Expanded Access to Vaccines: Medicare will continue to cover more vaccines at no cost, which includes the shingles vaccine and others that prevent serious illnesses.

What Should You Do During Open Enrollment?

Here are some actions to take during the 2024 Medicare open enrollment period to prepare for the upcoming changes:

1. Review Your Current Plan: Check if your current plan is still the best fit for your needs. Plans can change coverage and premiums every year, so make sure your plan covers the prescriptions, doctors, and services you need at a reasonable cost.

2. Compare Plan Options: Use Medicare’s Plan Finder tool to compare different plans, including Medicare Advantage and Part D prescription drug plans. Even if you’re happy with your current plan, it’s worth comparing to see if another plan offers

better coverage or lower costs, especially in light of the upcoming 2025 changes.

3. Ask for Help: Medicare can be confusing! Don’t hesitate to reach out to a Medicare specialist to help you make sense of your options.

In our office, Rick Austin has been a trusted resource to our clients for over 9 years. As an independent agent he can shop across multiple Medicare plans for you. And the best part is that his service is free to you – the insurance companies pay him for his time if you decide to write an application through him. Reach Rick at raustin@ marshwealth.com so you don’t let these new benefits pass you by.

The ABCs of Invisalign Your New Smile is Waiting!

eciding to transform your smile is a big step. That’s why I meet with patients on almost a daily basis in order to help them decide the best way to proceed. Up until recently, patients relied on the traditional metal braces that most of us are familiar with. Fortunately, today patients can now take advantage of a brand new technology from Invisalign. These clear aligners from Invisalign represent an all-new and exciting alternative to traditional metal braces. They are:

» Virtually invisible

» Easily removable for eating and drinking

» Easily removable for brushing and flossing

» Comfortable If you’re ready to see if Invisalign is right for you, just call our office to schedule your no-cost, no-obligation consultation. If you’re ready to get started, we will create your very own personalized treatment plan. Your treatment plan begins with a precise digital scan (no goopy putty required). Next, your digital scan is used to create your custom aligners. Your custom aligners are carefully designed to gently shift your teeth in stages to achieve your desired smile. Patients typically wear aligners for a minimum of 20 hours per day and replace aligners at two-week intervals during the treatment period. BO CAREY HISTORY TOURS

t was never my intent to lead ghost tours in a small town; however, local history is indeed my passion, combined with a love of storytelling.

After a few years conducting walking tours throughout Loudon’s historic district, the word got out. A few old timers began approaching me to share unusual stories I’d never heard, despite spending most of my life in this community. These “unusual stories” leaned to the dark side, including some pretty creepy tales regarding the oldest and most majestic buildings from our past.

It was right about the time of the pandemic that the Loudon County Visitors Bureau requested adding a Haunted Tour to the historic walking tours. They proposed we meet at the courthouse on Halloween night as well as the night before. The director Rachel Baker Harrell promoted it on Facebook, so I reluctantly showed up at the courthouse at 7 pm on Halloween Eve. To my utter amazement, 255 people were waiting for the scary stuff, and another 248 showed up the next evening. Over 500 individuals for two nights of haunted stories in this quaint little town! From that point on it’s been by far the most popular of my four distinctly different tours.

It always starts at the Orme-Wilson Building, built around 1850 and more commonly known as “the Tavern at Carmichael Inn.” It is definitely haunted with a territorial spirit warning bartenders not to turn off the music, sounds of babies crying upstairs and mischievous pranks played on the staff. A block away is the 1828 Blair Storehouse, where the ghost of the legendary Cherokee leader Pathkiller shows up in the front window, as claimed by a number of local riverfront locals. The friendly ghost girl, Kate Mourfield, has been witnessed by at least one paranormal authority at the site where she died in 1893. At the century old Machine Shop, Uncle Dick Ferguson has appeared on 3 occasions to scare the daylights out of apartment residents. Each tale is terrifyingly different, but all seem to match what he looked like when he died in the 1950’s. The Paranormal 411 Podcast is scheduled to broadcast live from this horrifying room at a future date.

The Barron Haunted House on Mulberry Street is cursed due to the first radio broadcast played in that home, and the mysterious noises that recur to most every resident who attempted living there. The Masonic Hall on Wharf Street acted as a Civil War hospital, and the paranormal activity suggests the souls who died there still drift through the building. By the end of the tour, the curse on the courthouse harkens back to the last East Tennessee hanging in 1883, and it concludes at the oldest building in town. That would be the Carmichael Inn where servers have repeatedly seen ghosts bearing remarkable resemblances to Carmichael men and women who lived there two centuries ago. Because it’s the Halloween season, it would be my pleasure to host you and your friends or family on either the Moonlight Awake the Dead Cemetery Tour or the Haunted Tour of Old Loudon. One or the other will be happening most every night in October. See details in the notice adjacent to this article about Bo Carey History Tours. Rumor has it a most morbid Gravedigger or the Ghost of Elvis will show up when we least expect it. Bo Carey is a 7th generation Loudon County resident with a passion for local history. He is the owner of Greer’s Home Furnishings in Historic Loudon and is available for lectures or programs for any area group or civic club.

East Tennessee Area Wildlife: GROUNDHOGS

Photographing the beauty of Tennessee, and the wildlife who call it home.

Groundhogs, also referred as “whistle-pigs,” can be found just about anywhere in Tennessee. I see them more than I photograph them, but when I see one in great lighting or doing something interesting then I will stop to photograph them. Although sometimes people see them as a nuisance, you can’t deny their cuteness. If you ever just sit and observe them for a while, especially when they have little ones, they’re actually so funny to watch. The groundhogs here actually do go into a true hibernation around the middle of November and emerge again in March - usually with babies. I will often miss seeing them over the winter, so I try to spend extra time with them until they go into their winter sleep.

Contact: Kalleybcook@gmail.com

https://www.facebook.com/kalleycookphotography https://kalleycook.smugmug.com/

Protection - Seeing mom and babies together and watching her always keeping an eye out for danger, as well as always giving her babies love every now and then, always melts my heart. They’re so sweet to watch and very affectionate animals.
Lunch Time - A groundhog’s diet is mostly green plants, fruit, vegetables and their water intake mostly comes from their foods. I thought it was so cute watching this groundhog hold its food, as I’ve never seen that before.
Watching Out - Groundhogs are always on the lookout and are often seen on their hindlegs to be able to see a little better. If a threat is near while they are looking around, they will make a real high-pitched sound which causes all the others around to rush back into cover. This is a very large female groundhog I have watched for years and always a joy seeing her.
Climbing Trees - Yes, groundhogs can climb trees. I never knew they could until I saw a very large animal in a tree and only to be surprised it was a groundhog. They will do this if food is scarce on the ground; they are actually excellent climbers.

Protecting Your Hearing –Preserve Your Balance

As we and our family members age, slips and falls become more and more likely to land us in the hospital with broken or fractured bones. Not only that, but the likelihood of them occurring increases. What we might not know is one of the glaring signs a trip or fall may be on the way is when our hearing begins to decline. After all, our balance is tied to the wellbeing of our inner ear, and any damage it sustains is not only affecting our hearing, but the delicate mechanisms that track our bodies’ movement and spatial awareness.

According to a study out by John Hopkins, individuals aged 40-69 who had a mild hearing loss were three times as likely to report falling in the past year, and that risk only increased as their hearing grew poorer. To be even more precise, for every additional 10 decibels of hearing loss you or your loved one may experience, the risk of falls increases 140%. That’s a safety hazard.

While these are alarming numbers, it’s not all bad news. Just as the onset of poor hearing can signal your balance is compromised, so too improving hearing actively works to ameliorate balance disorders.

This is where we enter the picture.

Tellico Hearing Solutions was started so you could discover if a hearing device might help you, your spouse, or your family member recover lost hearing, and with it, your spatial awareness and balance. Robert, our Certified Hearing Instrument Specialist, embarked first as a hearing instrument wearer, and so is intimately familiar with the difficulties that accompany hearing and balance loss. We use the latest technology to perform a testing of your current hearing and, if appropriate for your situation, we will equip you with the optimal hearing aid for your needs and your budget.

Not only that, but we can provide assistive listening devices for use with your tv, phone, or audio equipment to help make your day-

to-day activities easier and more enjoyable. Thanks to the new technology available, we can help you maximize your hearing recovery, and in so doing, help improve your balance and spatial awareness, decreasing the chances of falling. Much of our day-to-day function and personal safety is tied to our hearing, and many of us never realize it until we begin to experience its loss. If you or your family member is experiencing hearing loss, don’t wait to address it! Take it as a warning and come visit us right away. Better to get fitted for a hearing aid to take back your life, than to lose precious pieces of it in the hospital and rehab following a bad fall.

So, take the next step, even if it wobbles. Get yourself or your loved one in for a free hearing test and evaluation of your/their current hearing situation. Yes, it’s free, and it’s that easy. Experience the compassionate care that you will only find at Tellico Hearing Solutions. Again, not only is Robert a Certified Hearing Instrument Specialist, but he is also a hearing instrument wearer. Call us today and take the steps to take back your hearing, your balance, and your confidence moving forward.

In the Garden October

How is your yard? How is your water bill? My evening routine now includes moving hoses and running sprinklers every day just to keep things alive. This has been the driest summer we have had for several years, and October is our driest month. I don’t see an end to the drought for a while. There are still a lot of things that can and should be done this month, so let’s talk about that.

Fall is typically the best time to plant trees and shrubs because fall and winter are when the vast majority of root growth occurs. That means that any trees and shrubs planted between now and the end of December have a head start on spring. There are a few things you need to know about fall gardening, however, especially during a drought.

1. You must water well in order for your plants to survive. Sprinklers are inadequate for trees and shrubs because you need to get water 12” into the soil at least once a week. (As a guideline, I plan on 5 gallons on smaller shrubs, 10 on trees and large shrubs.) You can’t do that with a sprinkler! Hand water or use a drip line. Most hoses put out 5-7 gallons per minute, or you can turn them on just a trickle and let them run for 20 minutes or so at the base of the plant. If you are using drip, put a tuna can (or something that size) under a section of the hose so you can tell how much is actually coming out.

2. Many of your plants may be looking sad, but it doesn’t mean they are dead or dying. We had a lot of diseases and insects hanging around this year, so spotty, holey leaves are more common than nice green ones. Stressed plants will sometimes go into dormancy early, so a few trees have already defoliated.

3. Our average first frost can be between October 9th and October 28th. It has tended to be toward the last of the month for the past several years. Let’s talk about fall color. Maples and gingkos tend to get the most publicity, but don’t forget serviceberry, redbuds, dogwoods, and crepe myrtles. Others like black gum, sweet gum, oaks, beech, Zelkova, and witch hazel will also give bright color to your yard. If you prefer shrubs for color, camellias are one of my favorites, and we just got in a new load. Camellia sasanqua is the fall bloomer and tends to be a little less temperamental than the japonica, which blooms in the spring. The blooms will last for several weeks and are available in shades of red, pink, and white. Camellias prefer morning sun, afternoon shade, and well-draining acidic soil. They are all beautiful and can range from 4’ tall to 20’ tall at maturity. We can help you choose the best variety for your yard.

I also love my Oakleaf hydrangeas, which turn a deep burgundy in the fall. Even after the leaves drop, the shape and bark of the plant is lovely. Burning bush, Virginia sweetspire, cotoneaster, and blueberries will also turn red. For yellow shades, try clethra, forsythia, or witch hazel.

What if you are looking for berries? Beautyberry is my favorite, but don’t forget viburnums, cotoneaster, chokeberry, and hollies.

As for perennials, anemones, Joe Pye weed, sedums, and turtlehead may still bloom now. In addition, many of the summer bloomers often put on a new flush as temperatures cool. Don’t forget the perennials that are evergreen! Grasses also add color and movement through the cold months.

You can’t beat a pansy for color. Plant them now, and they will last until next May. They do well in the ground and in containers, so stop by while the selection is good. Bulbs won’t give you color this fall, but you can plant them now so that you can have

a beautiful show in the spring. If you have a vole problem, you can use chicken wire to make a cage, or find old colanders at a thrift store to plant them in.

Here are a few more chores that need to be done in the fall:

» Clean up your flower beds but don’t go overboard. Many of our pollinators overwinter in leaves. If you had fungal or insect problems, however, you will need to get the leaves up.

» If you didn’t have fungal problems, run over fallen leaves with your mower and them add them to your bed. They make wonderful compost!

» Pull any weeds and then apply a pre-emergent to keep them from coming back.

» Keep harvesting cool season veggies and herbs along with any pumpkins, squash, and gourds that are still on the vine.

» Mulch around plants to help keep the weed population down and the temperature and water levels stable. 3” is plenty. Leave a few bare spots for ground dwelling bees.

» Don’t forget the birds! Keep those feeders clean and full. If you have a birdbath that can remain outside, keep it clean and full also. Otherwise, clean it and store it for the winter.

Please call or stop by if you have any questions. Don’t forget that we have everything you need for fall decorating, and we will soon have everything you need for Christmas!

Window Treatments can amplify a room in so many way s, it’s not hard to see why they are our favorite a ddition to a room. We often hear clients say they do not want to block their view, but when used correctly, they en hance the view. Think of your view like a piece of art. The r ight frame on a piece of art can completely change the feeling of the piece of art, and it’s the same for your beautiful view. But that’s not all window treatments are good for. They can also provide privacy, sun protection, and more. Tha t’s why we strive to layer function with beauty. When designing window treatments we address the win dow in two ways. First, how does the room function? Is there glare? Where does the sun rise and set? Is there a lot of heat gain or loss in this room? Is privacy a n issue? Once we’ve asked these questions, we then look to how we can make it beautiful. Often this is achieved with a functional layer, and a decorative layer that combines to crea te a beautiful addition to the space. For this design, the formal dining room looked out to the street, and the home owners requested privac y that they could open and still allow light. Hunter Douglas Si lhouettes were used to provide a light-filtering gl ow that still provides privacy when needed. These can also go up in the head rail completely. For the transom window s, custom faux-iron inserts with a design that complements th e new globe chandelier was used throughout the open -concept home. A textural faux silk in an adobe clay color w as used for the floor to ceiling custom drapery pan els, hanging from a antique bronze metal rod and rings that brin gs the finish from the chandelier and the finish of the faux iron. Together these layers provide visual interest, func tion, and architectural details that take this home to a new level. This window treatment, along with three other of ou r window treatment designs, is featured in Charles Randall’s new book Window Fashions, available on Amazon and y our favorite book retailers. Inspired? Give us a ca ll today to get a beautiful and functional solution for your wi ndows.

Let us lighten your load this fall season!

As fall approaches and the holidays draw near, your home becomes a hub for family gatherings, celebrations, and cozy evenings. With all the excitement, keeping up with household chores can feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to laundry. This season, lighten your load by optimizing your laundry room for maximum efficiency and organization. A well-planned space can turn laundry day from a dreaded task into a streamlined and even pleasant experience.

At The Tailored Closet, we specialize in transforming laundry areas into stylish, functional spaces that make every aspect of laundry easier. Here are a few ways our solutions can help you create the perfect laundry room.

Countertop Convenience

Imagine having a dedicated countertop in your laundry room for sorting, folding, or stacking clothes. A smooth, sturdy surface not only makes the task more enjoyable but also helps keep things organized.

Hidden Storage

One of the secrets to an organized laundry room is hidden storage. Enclosed cabinets above or around your washer and dryer provide a place to store laundry supplies like detergents, softeners, and stain removers—keeping them within easy reach but out of sight. This keeps the room looking tidy and clutter-free while allowing you to grab what you need without a second thought.

Comprehensive Storage Solutions

Our designs go beyond just laundry essentials. We offer comprehensive storage solutions, including cabinets and drawers to accommodate both everyday and bulkier items. Tall cabinets are perfect for storing seasonal or larger items like extra linens, ensuring your laundry room stays neat and organized year-round.

Quick Ironing and Hanging Solutions

Touching up clothes with a quick press is made easy with a pull-down ironing board that stows away when not in use. No more dragging out a bulky ironing board—our solutions make this process quick and simple.

Need space for hanging freshly laundered clothes? We offer versatile pull-down or stationary rods, giving you a place to hang clothes immediately after drying, which helps prevent wrinkles and keeps clothes looking fresh. For extra hanging space, pull-out valet rods can be used and tucked away when not needed.

Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring

IThe Look and Feel of Genuine Hardwood or Stone for a Fraction of the Price

’ve been in the flooring industry for over four decades now, and in all that time, I’ve witnessed quite the evolution in the marketplace. Some truly innovative new products have been introduced. But do you know the one product that stands out in my mind? It’s called Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring.

These days, Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring, otherwise known as LVP, is one of the most sought-after interior features by both homeowners and designers alike. Its surface, available in both wood and stone finishes, offer unparalleled beauty, versatility, longevity, and resale appeal. The look is almost indistinguishable from genuine hardwood or stone, and the surfaces are so rich in texture, grain, and contour, you’ll nearly be convinced it’s the real thing. Available in all the colors, hues, and tones imaginable, you can now install LVP Flooring in any room of your home or business: below grade, in kitchens and baths, there’s no limitation except your imagination.

If that sounds like exactly what you need for a single room remodel, or even an update

for your entire home, I would like to personally invite you to visit Country Carpet & Flooring. Located at 3107 Highway 411 in Madisonville, across from Sequoyah High School, we’ll show you our virtually unlimited selection of Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring and explain their many advantages over traditional wood floors. LVP Flooring won’t warp or stain, it’s waterproof, and it’s even highly resistant to scratching. And while you’re visiting, be sure to ask about our semi-custom, solid wood, kitchen and bath cabinetry lines. Discover how to achieve that showcase-look for far less than you might have imagined.
